BEAGLE Tapes: Episode 50 - Andrew Reynolds, Justin "Figgy" Figueroa and Furby

- The Wilshire Financial Tower was built in 1962. This structure is commonly referred to by skateboarders as the WIlshire 10 or Wilshire 15. The building received a Merit Award from the Southern California Chapter of the American Institute of Architects in 1963. The entrance has an 88 foot wide forecourt framed by one story wings. The lobby features a four-section colored mosaic glass mural by Gyorgy Kepes, 12 feet high and totaling 57 feet in length. Welton David Beckett's architectural firm designed this building. Interestingly, the architectural firm also designed some very interesting buildings and structures that are relevant to skateboard culture. His firm also designed the World's Fair project in 1964, to NY skaters this is know as "Flushing Meadows". Another famous skate spot designed by Welton Beckett's firm is the Chase Tower in Phoenix, AZ. This spot is know as the "Bank Banks", made famous by Chad Muska and Colby Carter. The firm also designed the Capitol Records building located in Hollywood, CA.
Anyways, let's get down to brass tax. In pursuit of completing the "Bake and Destroy" video which was available as a free DVD in every copy of the December 2012 issue of Thrasher Magazine. The BAKER skateboards team was in crunch time to get the final clips for the video. Warming up at the Wilshire 10 stair, Justin "Figgy" Figueroa switch backside lipslides the set and avoids oncoming traffic. Andrew Reynolds gets half Cab kickflip noseslide, while Michael Burnett documents with a photography sequence. Migrating to the big boy side, a young Franky Villani performs a coping dance with a feeble-to-50-50 and then considers a 50-50 to manual. Figgy, pursing the premeditated switch backside 50-50, gets what he came there for. A cold blooded reptile (Lizard Kind) feeds off the heat of the make.
The next day, in San Pedro, CA, Furby nollie kickflips a fatty to flatty between the palm tree field goal. It's good... Circa 2011
So interesting hearing them talk about an unknown Franky as “that kid”.

this is easily one of the best ep's: one of reynolds' most original and best tricks ever done, figgy (who got robbed that year for SOTY) and a fucking *huge* nillie flip by such and underrated skater. all in the best years of my life. i stopped skating seriously right before this era, but knew a couple of these dudes and this vid just hit me with such nostalgia.these are so rad.
These tapes are why the internet exists. I feel so bad for all the skaters who quit and have no idea the true heaven that opened up in skateboarding nowadays. Seeing all this footy I am more hyped now than I ever was!

I'm not even gonna lie, I totally forgot about Furby over the last few years. I haven't seen him in anything recently, does he have any new footage? I hate when skaters like him disappear after going on an absolute killing spree. Makes you think about other people who just kinda faded away out of sight.

Just showed my 4 year old son the clip of Figgy almost getting hit by the car and he thought it was the funniest thing. We watched it over and over again and he kept saying “uh oh, car comin!” Hopefully he’s learned a valuable life lesson from the likes of Figgy!

Furby was a beast, him and antwuan two of my favorite deathwish skaters of all time. Baker boys just don’t really fuck with u like that unless your skating with them constantly and producing bangers and from what I heard furby wasn’t doing that at the time so he got cut, happens all the time, antwuan, dee, moose, brayden, donta, the list goes on
Furby and moose had zero personality, they both ripped but everyone else brings their own goofiness to the baker boys...they were both just generic guys, on a team with so many stand outs they just faded into the background. Still never see either of them anymore so they must be difficult to work with it something 🤷🏻♂️

Greco said it best when he said skating is the worst curse you can ever have. Because it stays with you forever. Imma be 37 next month and no matter how long I put the board down, I can’t give it up 😔 I’m even planning on getting knee surgery to help me, and possibly get cortisone shots just so I can keep on pushing 😔
I'm with you man -- 39 here. I tried steroid shots in the knee for a bit, but tbh, I'm not sure it's a good idea long-term. Weirdly I can switch flip better than regular (goofy) these days. I think it has something to do with surgery I had on my front (right) leg. Anyway man -- keep on ripping. Slappies are always fun at any age lol
