Thanks Dave. Best of luck in your next chapter. I recall you said you hoped to be a tour guide, if you share the passion and enthusiasm that you do with these videos I'm sure you will smash it.
Fyi, I believe the first post office is in Sanquar and the first post box in Chirlisle, in the botcher gate
Sign me up for the Tour as long as its not by bike!@@kennethholmes6991
No bikes this time, its a space hopper tour so we can bounce around the city :-D See you at St.Enoch square at 11 on Saturday.
Great reply. I cant make it , but look forward to the video! Brilliant channel!@@AstonishingGlasgow
Great video and, happy GPO retirement. Enjoy whatever comes next
Right! That's you put a stamp on your postie job! Good luck in your future endeavours! 🙌💯
29 years....thats a long shift....all the best for your next endevour
Another great video. Nice tribute to Arthur at the beginning. He was my postie for many years.
Orrabest!
'Jobless' is a good thing buddy when uve got ur own work to do... Keep on cycling ;) And remember the most astonishing thing about Glasgow are the hills (and the weather) that make it.
There's an Edward the 8th Postbox in Barlanark
Nice episode, thanks. All the best in your future employment❤
Thanks Dave, happy retirement. I love when you are in the southside. My dad was a sorter in the GPO., where he worked for 46 years. The best delivery day was when you heard the letter box rattle on Christmas Day. Do a video on Roukin Glen , if you have not done so.
Thanks for a really interesting video Dave and wishing you all the best in your search for your next position. You have certainly put in a good shift for RM.
Why did people object to the ‘2’ with Elizabeth but not the numbers in the other cyphers?
And what age were you when you started working? 6? 😮
Flattery will get you everywhere :-D
The issue with the 2? Elizabeth the first was only the queen of England. Her half sister Mary was queen in Scotland so when they started installing post boxes in Scotland with Queen Elizabeth 2 on them there were those who were angry because she was the first Queen Elizabeth in Scotland.
To me, its worth remembering history but blowing up post boxes is taking it too far. It was bad enough emptying post boxes that had litter and used needles in them without having to worry about bombs because of a small detail like that.
Hi there, there is a George VI box on the corner of Allison Street and Westmoreland Street. Passed it today.
There is an Edward VIII box between Byres Road and Kelvin Bridge. If you head down Byres Road but take a left before the Subway, it's somewhere up the hill on a corner near Glasgow Street. I got pictures last time I was there but I had no idea there were any more.
29 years is a respectable time in one job. All the best for any new endeavour!
I'm old enough to remember post boxes being full, and not just at Christmas. Best of luck with future plans.
You don't look old enough to have served that long in the Royal Mail.
It's a pity postal boxes weren't around in the time of King James VI (of Scotland) (James I of England).
Oh, the controversy that would have caused.😂
They would've been blue!
This is class m8 👍👍
Is that 1st or 2nd class 😂😂 does this get your stamp of approval 🤪😂😂
We'll miss you at G44 - but this is where your true talents lie! Keep making these brilliant videos. All the very best, Joe DPR
I've always wondered if all the boxes have identical keys, great video
They all have different keys and postmen only need to carry the keys for the boxes they empty. The collection driver however has a key ring with about 60 keys on it.
Wow, thanks
Thanks Dave for another wee gem, you need to start an astonishing Glasgow bike tour, you’d be a great guide with your red and white ( compliant 😂) poky hat helmet, when my grandfather returned to Glasgow from the First World War he became a postie and he and all the ex serviceman in the post office were encouraged to join the Territorials the HLI / Glasgow Highlanders, when the Second World War came, the lads being to old formed ‘Glasgows Post Office Home Guard “ I’ve got some cool pictures of them ……. Hiltler would have had nae chance against them ! 😂
That means the Edward one is wrong too. Because there’s only been 2 king Edwards of Scotland? Oh oh
Now iam going to be looking at post boxes great video
That’s a big step good luck. You were our postie for a while. You can’t beat a strongly worded letter😂
Ah, he may be unemployed but we still respect him, our Resident Historian. I'm sure people will be beating a path to your door.
So you became a post-postman?
I became a post post person post haste. :-D
Only a dedicated postie would know that. You never cease to stun with crazy interesting gold. Wow! @ the nitsdale road one! G44? (You must be been the best postie in croftfoot.) here me thinking they're just things for my dugs to pee on. Yeah, not every Scot has Stockholm syndrome, fortunately. Great "post" sorry,I couldn't resist. 😏
Very interesting! I never really appreciated how old these are and how long they have stood in the same place. Thank you very much for the effort you put in making this 👍 Liked and subscribed.
Great video I have worked at Royal Mail Ayr since 1991 I know their is a few old post boxes in Ayr but couldn't tell you what crowns are on them I only know a Edward VIII at Arrol Drive Ayr I will cycling round all the post boxes on my days off
I have a genuine "ER 11" Wall Post Box in my lounge (G53) makes an ideal home safe
Another great episode Dave! Good luck away from RM!
Another great video! Thanks! Good luck with the next stage of your career.
Great episode and thanks for your public service. I wonder how many Eviii post boxes there are? There's certainly one in Tobermory on Mull that's the only one i can think of!
As I recall the one inside the Maryhill Tesco has an EIIR sypher but it's plastic... I might be wrong.
Good luck with the next stage of your career! Thanks for another great video, I forgot to super thanks your last one which was different but really good too. Thanks.
This was really interesting! Thanks and good luck to you!
Great videos which I have thoroughly enjoyed. Good luck in your new venture. Please give my regards to Maria as I haven’t seen her in a long time,
india street alex
My nearest poxbost in Baillieston is a George VI
Avid follower of your videos ❤.
Surely you haven't retired from the Post Office?? You're far too young, surely?
Anyhow....good luck, and don't stop making videos PLEASE! 🙂
The videos shall continue. I have left RM to work for an American travel company as a tour guide as well as a few ideas I can't reveal yet.😉
I was informed many years ago that the cost to manufacture one of those cast iron red post boxes is over £60.000 thousand pounds ! I have no proof either way but if true , it would not surprise me in the slightest .
60000 for a hunk of metal... its only about 2500 plus 3000 to install.
Hi Dave, I hope you enjoy your retirement from being a postie, it's no' great job, but better than walking the streets,😂😂😂. Another great educational video, awra best for what's to come.
🤣🤣🤣
Another stoater of an episode, can't believe there isn't an E2R postbox somewhere that survived unscathed - that really is incredible!
I imagine there must be some Elizabeth 2nd boxes out there somewhere but I didn't manage to find one.
Nice to see one I passed every moment to the Old Samaritans Hospital....before it was turned into flats 🙏 great video I didn't realise that about post boxes. Good luck with the early retirement what the plan ? You dedicating yourself to videos fulltime?
Not quite retired yet, I left RM to start work as a trip experience leader for a company that provides guided holidays for American tourists in Scotland. That will be 8 weeks of the year and the rest of the time will be video making and a few other ideas up my sleeve.
What an interesting video!
Did you notice the funny graffiti details on the stop sign next to the postbox on Duke St?
I didn't. I got to this box and Robert a friendly black cab driver and follower of Astonishing Glasgow stopped for a chat and I probably didn't look around the area as close is I would have normally.
❤️❤️
Your knowledge of Glasgow should ensure you find a really nice bridge to live under. Best of luck with the new venture
Fascinating! Good luck with the job hunting 👍
Thanks for the video, excelent as always, on the odd occasion on my early shifts I see you passing our house on your bike and sometimes on the way back, unfortunately have never had the opportunity to say hello, wishing you all the success and best wishes for the future, keep up the good work
Thanks
Thanks!
Thanks
Thanks
You’ve been a great postie over the years and good luck in your future ventures. It was worth doing your Advanced Higher Geography 😂
Thanks Gordon and I wouldnt be here today without great teachers.
