brian91145 100% agree. I mentioned this to one of my buddies about a year ago, and he acted like I was crazy. After playing him some of my favorite Mayer songs and Dead & Co jams, he couldn’t help but agree. There’s a reason guitarists like Clapton respect him so much.
What a great musican! I'm so glad and grateful he joined Dead & Co. I am a die hard dead head and I can honestly, and proudly, say he is the best guitar player to stand in Jerry Garcia's place. He's the best post Jerry fit for the Dead.
Only Weir will never allow Mayer to fully express himself... it's doubtful we'll ever see Mayer able to play with the same depth of feeling and emotional freedom as in this performance, as when he plays now with the Dead. It may not be as obvious in live performances, but, watching clips of their shows, it's hard not to see and has even become predictable at what point Weir will shut him down .... Billy & Mickey see it, you can tell by their reaction and expressions on their face. Hopefully, Weir will lighten up & allow the band to reach its full potential during the summer tour.
Going Down The Road Feelin' Bad, also known as the Lonesome Road Blues, is an American traditional song, "a white blues of universal appeal and uncertain origin". It was recorded by many artists through the years; the first known is Henry Whitter in 1924 as "Lonesome Road Blues". Other famous versions include those by the Grateful Dead, Woodie Guthrie, Cliff Carlisle and Bill monroe.
He is alternating between the major and minor pentatonic scale's in the Key of E Major. If this is new to you, you should definitely grasp the concept and try putting it into action. It will open up a whole new world of playing for you. Especially if you are a blues player.
Red Rocks July 2013 my favorite. One thing with Mayer always a great show...never plays anything the same twice. Definitely the best at improvising to suit the mood.
I used to hate this guy. But as time goes on and the collarpopping fades away what's left is a great guitar player and musician. People like him and Gary Clark Jr are going to save the blues!
Thanks for the reply! I am actually pretty decent at mixing the major and minor sounds but it just sounded like he was soloing in something else here. I know it's a grateful dead cover so I figured he might be using Mixolydian
Dude, it's not! The Lenny guitar is the SRV strat. This one is another one he used for early live versions of Vultures. It is a lot more worn down since then though. The sunburst is red, I don't believe it is on the SRV strat, also the hardware isn't gold.
Jerry Garcia of the grateful dead. One of the best of all time. Listen to Europe 72 and ull see why man. But he died in rehab in 95 so no way of seein him now. My dad was an avid deadhead went to over 300 shows and he never saw thenm play some of thier best hits cus they never played the same show twice. So watch their live stuff and ull be amazed.
I love everything he comes out with, but yeah how can you not love that group too. Steve Jordan is, well, the best. I was just thinking the John Mayer Trio needs to put out another album. I think John's best work was Continuum, and I believe it was a result of just coming from the trio stuff.
LOL..not awkward.....I made the mistake of typing that in on this upload and MADE THE MISTAKE OF NOT CORRECTING IT!!!!!! I am way older than you and I do know that this was not a JM song.....considering that I drove 900 miles to see this man I am pretty sure I know what songs are his and which ones are not. But if it would make you feel better, I will correct the title!!!!! Thanks.
Its ok cus i bet she didnt even know the dead played this at all. And a lot of people know this cus the dead were the ones who perfected it with their live awsomness!!!
Mc Huelis lol...I hear ya! I am going to Jersey for a couple of shows in August and Chicago. still checking the schedules to see what else. Have a great time.
i wasnt trying to be rude at all sorry if it came out that way, i was just saying and no i actually love the grateful dead. please do not assume things just cause i may be younger than you and you attacking me like that isn't very mature. but sorry for this whole misunderstanding.
The feels are beyond impressive. JM is singlehandedly one of the best guitarist of our generation without question! That vibrato though!
Absolutely agree and he just gets better and better!

I wholeheartedly agree.

Agree!!

I'd love to see Mayer play this song with Dead as he did at Red Rocks 2013.
b d I’ve never noticed this, but am curious now. Do you have specific shows that you have seen this?
@@bd5699 actually, this is sadly right... I noticed these expressions a few times
THIS IS MUSIC!
Right on! He is smoking right now with Dead and Co!
that owl is just chillin
i didn't know John Mayer was a dead head. never ceases to amaze me
dude great job on the dead vibe, the band is killing it
Is when his body is vibration of pure music. I love it.

Wow, John is on fire here! Thanks for uploading!!
I was just about to post the same! This is really an old traditional song. Not sure of the original writer, but just about everyone has covered it.
amazing, thank you for the upload
The sound quality is great!
this is the best i've heard him sound since he came back
Same guitar he used 10 years ago in Any Given Thursday for Lenny/Man On the Side. Love that guitar!
Sorry for being 9 years late 😂 but it's a different one - this is his '64 Strat and the one on AGT was his SRV signature
Best Mayer's version of this song. Aaron (the drummer) did a great job here too.
Filipe Ramos I love the Pinkpop 2014 version the most :)
Casper van Helvoirt well, it's nice too. i like the drums and rhythm in this one here
+Filipe Ramos he always does..
Red Rocks July 2013 my favorite. One thing with Mayer always a great show...never plays anything the same twice. Definitely the best at improvising to suit the mood.
He is really really back!
Going down the road feelin’ bad.
I just used a Sony cybershot. Amazing photos and videos. No additional lenses needed, just the zoom that's on it!
I am glad to see him back... But does he look lost to anyone?
I used to hate this guy. But as time goes on and the collarpopping fades away what's left is a great guitar player and musician. People like him and Gary Clark Jr are going to save the blues!
DAMN I like this....
Thank you so much for sharing this! But this is a cover :)
Thanks for the reply! I am actually pretty decent at mixing the major and minor sounds but it just sounded like he was soloing in something else here. I know it's a grateful dead cover so I figured he might be using Mixolydian

yeah.. and Mr. David Ryan Harris..
Traditional song...covered by the GDead, Delaney & Bonnie etc.
not with him.....bummed but was an incredible show. probably the best i have ever seen him!
I love everything he comes out with, but yeah how can you not love that group too. Steve Jordan is, well, the best. I was just thinking the John Mayer Trio needs to put out another album. I think John's best work was Continuum, and I believe it was a result of just coming from the trio stuff.
In all fairness to дима мирный, those are the Grateful Deal lyrics. I don't think anyone else does the "Going where the climate" verse.
LOL..not awkward.....I made the mistake of typing that in on this upload and MADE THE MISTAKE OF NOT CORRECTING IT!!!!!! Lindo simplesmente
🌸
Amazing footage! Any guitar players know what kind of scales he's using here? Sounds a bit different than the standard pentatonics?
9 years late but i think its mixolydian
LOL and did you just pick that up from all the other comments on this video?
Where's Mr. McIntosh?
Awesome guitar lick covered up by woo girl... :'(
Anyone know who his drummer is?
Its ok cus i bet she didnt even know the dead played this at all. And a lot of people know this cus the dead were the ones who perfected it with their live awsomness!!!
Sounds like the "Lonesome road blues"
well its actually a traditional song but yeah johns playing it the same way as the dead
You can say it's more of a Henry Whitter or Woody Guthrie cover?
This is the SHITTTT! NEW John Is The shit !
Yeah, but Pino was just in the trio, his actual bass player was the amazing David Labruyere
almost the same lyrics as lonesome road blues by Bill Monroe
Do you have slow dancing from this show?
gregstv1 I looked through my videos the other day and I do not have it! wish I did!
Mc Huelis I think I'm going to hit the 2 shows in Chicago. I have some Mayer shows I'm going to or I'd love to go to more. You?
Mc Huelis lol...I hear ya! I am going to Jersey for a couple of shows in August and Chicago. still checking the schedules to see what else. Have a great time.
Aaron Sterling.
They have an owl on the stage. Whut.
@geoffstockton - nope. Read what I said more carefully.
magic starts at 4:00
LOL, also awkward for you because it's actually about 100 years old. It was a common cover in the 50s/60s folk scene.
It's a Woodie Guthrie cover.
This song is much older than the Grateful Dead.
This song was originally written by an escaped prisoner back in the late 1800's. The Grateful Dead discovered it because of Woody Guthrie.
i wasnt trying to be rude at all sorry if it came out that way, i was just saying and no i actually love the grateful dead. please do not assume things just cause i may be younger than you and you attacking me like that isn't very mature. but sorry for this whole misunderstanding.
It's a Woody Guthrie cover, son.
This is NOT from the Grateful Dead, this is from WOODY GUTHRIE!!
It's not written by the Grateful Dead....they covered it though. It's a traditional Blues song going as far back as 1924.
That one is actually a prototype of his sunburst stratocaster signature.
Uh this is not a John Mayer song. Very old song, mostly associated with the Dead.
awkward for you cause this is actually a grateful dead cove
It's a Woody Guthrie cover
woody guthrie
technically a Woodie Guthrie cover
hahahhah oh you're right it is a cover wow my bad i don't listen to the original.
Is it more awkward for you since the Grateful Dead were covering this song when they were playing it?
I'm not liking his new band. He needs Pino on bass, Steve on drums, Robbie and DRH back. But I'm a fan of the bluesier John, so whatever.
Are you kidding me? Woody Guthrie original all the way...
