Fokker DR1 was designed by a dutchman pilot and designer, Anthony Fokker. The aircraft was one of the first plane to have 3 wings and used during the war. Fokker DR1 was also flew but Manfred von aka 'The Red Baron' Manfred von Richthofen, the most famous air ace of the WWI. He was the highest-scoring ace of the war with 80 official victories.

Love it. He explained the history and the differences between his plane and the original very well. It was very relaxing and enjoyable to listen to somebody who is very knowledgeable about the plane, the service, and all of the flying intricacies that went along with it as well.
Nicely done, Mike.
This gentleman embodied the subject matter.
The segment gave the sense of actually talking
to a pilot from that age. And allowed you to just
ruminate in a by gone era.
Cool Mike, that was fun.
Director Peter Jackson is a big WWI aviation fan. He owns a company in New Zealand called The Vintage Aviator. He helped Kermit Weeks with his Albatros. There's another great company called Craftlab.
This is so cool. Thank you MOJO for going above and beyond in demonstrating your passion for aviation
This is great detail about the DR1 presented by a very informed gentleman pilot. Mikey McBryan should know more about this particular plane. The one he is building in Canada surely will have many of the same quirks. Reach out to him if you have not already. Cheers Mel
There is one still flying at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome .
The gent gave a good speech. Yeup, kit plane, engine is not Gnome and it has a tail wheel, this one flys better than the original.
*Crosses fingers and hopes it’s not a 3/4 scale Dr1 before clicking*
Goddammit .....
Airshow floozies...
full scale
What a beautiful airplane
That bit of information about how the Red Baron died was news to me. Who would have thought he would be killed while in a low level dogfight by an infantryman's rifle. Very informative and interesting. I would be interested to know the thoughts behind the scalloped trailing edges on the wings. I know they were still trying to mimic bird wings around that time period. But the other design elements for that time period seem quite advanced. Thanks for this most interesting overview.
The scalloped trailing edges were by "accident," not design. The trailing edges of the wing ribs back in those days were held in place by steel wire. When the fabric covering was applied and finished the finish (called dope) would shrink the fabric and bend the wire, hence the scalloped trailing edge.
It's a shame that for the DR-1 it doesn't have cantilever spars like the original. It also could use a radial engine! Not as temperamental as the rotaries but at least the right general shape.
Super vid. Flying that machine must be scary
Check out the Detroiter I flew thru red bluff California a cpl weeks back . They just got the refinished wings back on it . It will be the only flying one left only 3 left in the world 1 in pieces 1 in a museum and the 1 in red bluff almost ready to fly ! An amazing piece of aviation history .
Wow. I like this guy! He loves aviation and it's history. Gladly would buy his beers for sharing his stories and knowledge!
the fokker dr1 was designade by reinhold plaz not by tony fokker reinhol also designed the dvll and the dviii
Accuracy, smaccuracy. This is an aviation enthusiast channel.
There was more to it than that. Reinhold Platz was Fokker's chief designer. The High Command however insisted that Hugo Junkers would join up with the Fokker team. Junkers and Fokker didn't get along at all, there were some problems with wing flutter on the prototype, which had no bracing struts howsoever in the outer wing panel area. Some higher ups were suspicious of that whole cantilever wing business and so Fokker told Platz to just put a single strut on the outer wing panels. Structually the aircraft didn't really need it.
Wow, the red Baron really makes Rickenbacker, and even Tex hill look like they just barely made ace.
The extra wing bracing wires makes me think this is an Airdrome Aeroplanes aluminum kit. The offer 3/4, 7/8 and full scale versions. I was going to go that route, but my wife and I want to build a more accurate one based on the Ron Sands plans.
Great story behind the airplane... love it! Mike another awesome video. Thanks!!
my ultralight airport has one in it so cool!
Awesome Mike! Thanks for bringing us this great piece of history!!
Thanks Mike! I always enjoy your videos!
Hy Mike,
Can u please make a video on comparing SR20 and SR22 about its range, fuel burn at different percentage of power, fuel capacity ets....
looking forward to the video....
Regards...
Very informative video Mike.
I wasn't aware of the structural changes from wood to metal and I had always thought that a student pilot or a pilot on his first sortie had shot down the Red Baron. Interesting to find out it was actually ground fire. It is unfortunate that he was killed by that ground fire as I understand he was a gentleman and I'm sure or at least I hope he would have been treated as such had he been found alive and rescued.
The Baron was killed because he broke several of his own rules for combat flying, most likely because he'd been kept out there too long and was just plain tired. Those rules were:
DON'T fly over the enemy lines unless the mission requires it, and don't fly so close to the ground where everyone with a weapon's going to shoot at you!
DON'T get obsessed with an opponent who's thwarting all your efforts to shoot him down, break it off and look for someone else. (Nowadays it's called "Target Fixation.")
DON'T loose track of where you are! (See Rule 1)
He broke all three. He died.
Mike, Thank You for the presentation. I like it.
Not to mention all the wonderful turning maneuvers we have today like the Hammerhead, chandelle and Immelman etc.. were all created by them.
That plane always reminds me of Snoop when he is sitting on top of his dog house pretending he is the Red Baron! Awesome Fokker LOL! I kept giggling every time he said Fokker! Those were true GRIT! pilots back in the day, no electronics to help you out like today's plane's.
Wow it’s amazing seeing a 3 wing plane!
I love it, but please, by a microphone!
Interesting...I never new engine is a rotary engine thought Thay were stationary radial engines probably more seals to contend with....
Was told it's a challenge to land especially with cross winds crabbing effect...high lift wings.. etc...
what engine is in it? where did your CG come out to? am putting one together now
Bit stil Nice
Cool
Love it
I really like your videos. But the insect bird sound is too much to bare on this one.
Who was the gentleman presenting this DR1?
