Welcome back to the Experimental Aircraft Channel! In this episode we travel out to Enterprise Alabama and visit with Jerry May who is the PLANS BUILDER and FABRICATOR of this AMAZING World War One replica. This aircraft was built 100% from plans and NOT from a KIT! It is constructed of Wood, Chrome Molly Steel and Fabric covering. Follow along as we learn how this aircraft was built in just 5 years and Jerry May's journey through this exciting build!
With any specific questions or if you are considering building this aircraft, Jerry May invites you to contact him at:
    geraldmay@roadrunner.com
This aircraft also utilizes a wood Culver Prop. We visited Alaina Lewis of Culver Props at her shop in the previous episode. If you would like to learn more about how wood props are made click this link to the video:

I really like what your doing with your videos. I look forward to your videos like I used to look forward to getting Sport Aviation back in the late 70's and 80's when the focus was on builders and the amazing accomplishments that are done by aviation enthusiasts. I hope you can continue to do these interview style presentations, I like that you ask some detailed questions about the build process in addition to general overview information.

@ J P Thank you so much for the positive and encouraging comments! I do appreciate them. This is EXACTLY what I am trying to accomplish by doing this and also to hopefully get more people actively involved in building. Please Like and more importantly SUBSCRIBE for future videos.

Very interesting project. You could stop the circus music once the interview starts.

Raoul Cruz... Sorry about that. It was a rather long video with a lot of dead air in the background so I was wanting to put some background music very lightly in the background to cover that dead space. Hope it didn't detract from the rest of the interview and capturing Jerry's awesome accomplishment! Hope to see you commenting on the next ones? Thanks again for taking the time to watch!

They had one of these (a Fokker tri-replica) at the warbirds airshow. Not sure if it was a kit, or scratch design/build, he called it a replica, and I didn't ask...should have. Didn't have that FANCY red prop on it, though (or it didn't impress on me like it did here). ;-) They DID fly it, and it was really pretty in the air.
The only comment on the build, other than GREAT, is I DEFINITELY would have AT LEAST made two rib jigs, maybe three. A YEAR for the spar and ribs...working EVERY day. OUCH! I can see where the foam sandwich is an improvement THERE. I think our wings were about 12-14 weeks, working mostly weekENDS.
Now for the video analysis....FINALLY....some applicable music. You should start a class teaching other YT'ers how to choose appropriate music, and WHAT LEVEL to play it when there is a need to hear the actual audio from the vid. ;-)
I commend and agree with his choice of a modern engine over a rotary if he intends to fly it much, which he said he does. No sense taking that amount of risk UNLESS your aim is pure replication, and you want to bear that extra known risk. There are reasons the rotary is no longer used, and I suspect it's not just the gyro inducement problems.

Love your videos. Also love your comments and feedback on Facebook regarding my Dakota Hawk build. I'd be happy to submit a video walkaround, and periodic progress videos on my two projects. However, it might be nice to have some suggestions and just what to show and say. Like you suggested to me, I suppose I could do such a video with my iPhone, as that is all the video camera I have (at the moment). Keep up the good work. I hope to be ready to order an AM-15 this summer. We'll see.

I hope you have gone through that engine and corrected it's MANY and very DANGEROUS flaws before you fly it.
It would be tragic to see that plane destroyed due to an engine failure. (Not to mention the loss of another aviator)
PLEASE look into Rotec. Worst aviation engine in existence.

Awesome, I didn't know where you get that Fokker DR-1 Triplane. Is that a actual scale plane? I would like to know where to get that Blueprints...thanks

I just inquired with Jerry May (the builder of this aircraft) to see if there is another contact email/phone number. I will report back when he replies.

ron@ronsandsreplicas.com Jerry wrote back. This is the ONLY contact info he says is available. He also noted the Wicks Aircraft Supply sells wood kit for them and to reach out to them about possible options to contact. Sorry I couldn't give you more info. Hope this helps.

I didn't think the Barron's plane had a throttle. Wasn't it just a magneto on or off. Full throttle or nothing.

Did it occur to anybody to fly the plane so we could see it do that?

    • @ExperimentalAircraftChannel
      @ExperimentalAircraftChannel  5 років тому +3

Gary Myers ...Would have loved to capture that YES absolutely. He was waiting on a seasoned Fokker DR1 pilot to do the first high speed taxi and first flights to be sure all was rigged correctly and no surprises. Sorry to disappoint but that wasn't available at time of shooting this. I've asked Gary to contact me when its flying so I can return and capture that to share with you.

Is Aerodrome still building aircraft that are nearly replicas of WW I aircraft? And, have you had an opportunity to visit The Rhinebeck, New York [oops, Blue State Alert: ahOogah, ahOogah !!!] Aerodrome for one of their Snoopy and the Red Baron dogfight shows?

Your interviews are Excellent. However...(there is always a "but" isn't there ?)...why the need for (an obsession with YT Presenters) Intrusive, distracting, Repetitive Pseudo-music ? I Do Not Get It.

The original had an Oberusel rotary which was a copy of the LeRhone, and it was 110hp.
Why go to all the trouble for authenticity to just use an overpowered radial instead of something that was at least closer to what it ought to be.....

maybe cope, seethe, mald and bald until you realize it's his plane, not yours?
