Should have never allowed "new math" into public schools in the 1960s... I find great joy in tutoring math students (gr. 3&5) since the teacher told me to "forget the book, teach it the way you know it." Multiplication and division of decimal numbers goes from, "I don't understand this!" and after five minutes, to their eyes lighting up with "I get this now!" I always encourage them to "practice this at home, too."

Me toooo, the martin was so bright and direct, I normally associate that with cheaper guitars, with solid spruce tops and rosewood back and sides, and thay's probably the reason.

I just re found this comment and wanted to add Huss And Dalton is now my favorite guitar company. My best friend died in a car wreck and his main guitar was a custom Huss and Dalton. Mark Dalton had a replica made and gave it to the family for free so they could raffle it off to help with funeral expenses. It raised 8000$ for them. Mark personally invited me to tour the factory and that he would show me around personally. Amazing man and amazing company. Much love ❤️ ❤️❤️

I got all three wrong. My big takeaway here is that the Orangewood can hold its own against the more expensive models.

It can somewhat hold its own, but it definitely doesn't have the low end of a Martin, which is very noticeable. I have no doubt they are great guitars especially for the price, but they're not for an acoustic enthusiast. They would be good for a beginning-intermediate player for sure.

Nailed it. The H&D was obvious to me. The balance made it stand out. D41 was thumpy and the Orangewood still sounded new to me.

  • @alexn1793
    @alexn1793 3 роки тому +14

My favorite sounding guitars, in order were:
    Orangewood - bass and balanced
Huss & Dalton - great bass & boomy
Martin - a little too brittle
Probably if the Martin was set up and had a neck reset, it would be different and my ranking would change.
Really, the orangewood is VERY IMPRESSIVE!
Hopefully after you do a neck reset on the Martin, you could do this again. I have a feeling the Martin may go to #1.
Either way, great video and I love all your videos!
    Thanks!

It really depends on what we mean by "sounding old"
Torrefied wood definitely changes the sound of acoustic guitars, and I've noticed more volume and responsiveness. Those are definitely two qualities of great old guitars, but in my opinion, the bracing under the hood affects the sound even more than wood choice.

  • @bross63
    @bross63 3 роки тому +1

I picked them all correctly. There is nothing quite like the round, full tone across the full frequency range of a good, older Martin. The highs are loud but not harsh or brittle like on many guitars. The H&D and Orangewood sound good, especially the Orangewood at that price, and many may prefer their bite in the highs. But to my ears the Martin is the truly magical instrument of the bunch.

  • @VenancioPortalatin

I had the Huss & Dalton and Martin switched in my guess. My favorite without knowing was the Martin from the get go though. It just had a subtle amount more of balance to my ears. That being said they all sounded really great and I was shocked with how much that Orangewood held its own. I'm sure with a few more years of play the Orangewood will open up a lot and sound even better. Been looking for a good less expensive backup to my main acoustic and this video has made really consider getting an Orangewood. I loved both the Martin & Huss & Dalton as well and if I had that kind of funds I would no doubt pull the trigger either one of them.

  • @paulmackie593

I got them correct, but I was far from certain, although I was most confident that #3 was the Martin...it definately sounded like an old Martin. They all sounded excellent to my ears, but the Orangewood sounded "newer" to me, just a little crisper/tighter. I recently bought the Orangewood Berkeley which I also think sounds and plays excellent. Great comparison.

Stopped before end to vote: 1 = Huss & Dalton, 2= Orangewood, 3= D 41. All sound good but to me 3 sounds deeper older more resonant, 1 sounds almost as resonant with warm tones, and 2 resonant with brighter tones. 😎👍

I already own the Oliver live and the Echo live in vintage Sunburst, and gig out professionally with them. I couldn't make up my mind whether to get a slope shoulder or a square shoulder, now I can get both! Got them all right. But that’s because I own a D45 and a orange wood so I can tell right away between the two other one just fell into place after those two. Awesome video though. OW is a serious contender with mid level acoustics. They are just going to continue getting better and that price is going to go up so people need to grab them while they can at this low price point.

My guess was 1. H&D ,2. Martin,3. Orangewood. My reasoning was that 1&3 sounded alike to me and I knew the H&D and Orangewood had similar woods, I thought the H&D sounded more like the martin to me.The orangewood sounded tighter to me but maybe with age it would sound more open. My son and I had a ton of fun guessing on this video. We did not use headphones so maybe that had an effect on our guesses .

Before watching this video, I placed an order for the Orangewood Hudson today, and I'm looking forward to receiving it. Having said that, the Huss and Dalton was by far my favorite, and the one I would buy if I had the money. The Martin came in second, and the Orangewood last. But the fact is that the other guitars are over 5x or 7x the price of the Orangewood, so I'm still happy I placed the order and looking forward to playing it.

Honestly I chose the third Guitar on all 4 videos , because it had low-end - mid - top end tones well balanced & a warm nice tone which I very much like. I don’t think I can afford a 1970’s Martin . That now put me back right on square one, on my hunt for a 6 string . My mind was first set on a used Gibson, then I watched a video Rhett Shull choosing a used H&D with a great tone so I was looking for a used Huss & Dalton torrefied one. Thanks for a great video, Onward & upwards for me then.🙄

I got it correct - BUT, I truly was surprised at how well the Orangewood sounded! The iconic Martin sound was a dead giveaway (for #3), but it took listening to several different tunes to put the H&D as guitar #1. Really fun and informative video!

I nailed the Martin for its distinct mellow tone. I couldn't hear a difference between the H+D and the Hudson. I am currently Guitar Hunting in that $600 dollar domain. Lots of great guitars, but none available to play before making the purchase. I never like to make a return. I'd rather make a hands on choice. Thanks Again Jeremy Great as usual.

I could spot the Martin immediately but of course that’s a very special guitar. Got the orangewood and the Huss and Dalton mixed up. I think the biggest lesson here is that if us guitar nerds can’t spot the more expensive instrument, the average music listener won’t think twice. Play what you can afford and what you like, throw the name on the headstock away!

The martin was the warmest and didn’t sound quite as nice to my ear. It didn’t sound bad, but I like the clarity from the first 2. Overall the Orangewood was most pleasant to my ear.

I guess I made a good purchase with my Orangewood 🙂

This was very interesting to me because depending which genre of music you were playing, I went back and forth between the Hudson and Huss, but the Martin was the least attractive sounding to me in every case, which was surprising. Commenting before the end of the video. If #3 is the Orangewood I will be shooketh. Pretty sure it's the D-41. it has a very open and full sound. #2 sounds a bit choked and #1 feels like a mix between the two. Predictions #1: H&D #2:Orangewood #3:Martin.
I think I could pick out the Martin because it sounds a lot like my HD-28 duh, I know. My HD-28 is 2020 I'd be interested to see a new Martin vs the old one. What an amazing set of guitars.

Got a perfect score. I compared #1 and #3 first, as both sounded really full and balanced. But one of them(#3) sounded more open than the other to me so i assumed it was the Martin, which i was right about. So the #1 had to be the H&D. #2 was obviously inferior, sound wise, to my ears. It was easy to tell that it was the Orangewood. Sounded relatively compressed as compared to the other two guitars.

I knew the Orangewood was #2. I had 1 and 3 reversed. I expected the D41 to be a little better. The Orangewood was great for the money but was a little shallow to me in comparison to the Huss and Dalton.

Same here, I have a 2019 D18 and love it. I thought guitar #2 sounded boomy and so figured it was the Rosewood Martin. Did not here the Bass that well on the Martin. Maybe Miking issues, I am sensitive to boomy bass and bought the D18 as it was a mahogany. The Orangewood sounds great.

This was my pick without knowing the results:
    Sample #1: Guitar 2
    Sample #2: Guitar 1
    Sample #3: Guitar 1&3
That’s how my ears enjoyed the tunes played.

Huss and Dalton was best for me, but Orangewood was a close second. Some of the highs were a bit too piercing for me, but I imagine that would mellow with time.

Lots easier with headphones. I still like the Rosewood back and sides with that great bass (I have a fantastic D-28) but that Orangewood sounds great. I've emailed them because I might like to get one for a school fundraiser. Thanks Jeremy. Wonder if Orangewood makes a short scale.

Pleasantly surprised myself and got them right. Like the H&D the most.

I was on. Only because for me too the acoustic sound I have in my head is the sound that comes out of that huss. And I’m quite familiar with that old Martin boom

I immediately tagged guitar #2 as the Orangewood. It was like the volume and tone was turned down a notch switching from the H&D to the Orangewood. I had a harder time distinguishing between the H&D and the Martin. I own an Orangewood Echo so I'm not a hater but more of a realist. You get what you pay for, yes, but you can also pay a little too much for what you're getting.

The Martin sounded like a 5,000 dollar guitar should and I knew it right away. The other 2 weren't so easy to discern, but the Huss had a little extra when strumming.

I preferred the Orangewood Hudson by a long shot. It had much more sparkle on the top end and balanced full frequency response. My preferences are in this order 2; 3; and 1.

I also got the Orangewood and the Huss & Dalton mixed up. The Martin was clear of course. Considering the price difference, I think the Orangewood is a pretty good deal. I preferred the 3rd, the Martin, love Rosewood B&S, not really a fan of Mahogany - a had a really good D18 for a while - but couldn´t cut through in a Bluegrass band, no power, no bass. I had expected a bit more difference between the first 2 and the Martin. My D35 from 1971 is amazing, full, loud, warm and booming. Was actually not too impressed by the Huss & Dalton, had expected more difference with the Hudson model. I don´t have the impression that the torrified top made very much difference. I recently bought a new Boucher BG152GM, with torrified top and also my Yamaha LL36 has it, two amazing sounding guitars. I feel they are a lot warmer, sweeter than for instance my Collings D42A and the CJ with IRW, although they don´t have the power, volume of the Martin D35 or the 2 Collings. Especially the Collings D42A is extremely loud, a bit too brutal :-). Have to use 0.13 Vintage Bronze strings to "calm it down" a bit, it is just too bright with phosphor bronze.

The Orangewood is great for what it is. But that's pretty much it. The Huss and Dalton sounded way better blind folded. I am so impressed how great this guitar is. I need one of those. If I have get my hands on one of em, I'll have to get one.

The differences were not as noticeable as I thought they'd be. I was sure your d41 would blow the competition away but I was wrong. Orangewood has some great pieces now, good comparison video... maybe ur best yet!

I got them. I preferred the Orangewood but the Martin was full and nice.
