@@Durzo1259 on top of it being larger and having a different tuning, which some of them can also have 5 strings (not totally sure for what though) a large majority of bass players (classical playing at least not jazz) players play standing upright rather than sitting and if they do sit it has to be on a stool due to the height

But the younger you start a kid, the better the person will be, because kids learn and adapt extremely quickly and you ingrain the skill them from a young age. Which is why instead of neglecting kids to the "education" system, which wastes 12-20 years of people's lives, they youth and produces weak, stupid useless people(that goes doubly so for STEM), parents should start sending their kids to private courses from the age of 10-12 in one engineering field, or one trade, or law or commerce, so by the time they are 16-20 they can be highly skilled and knowledgeable professional experts, instead of being 22-27 and applying for an internship/junior position to every company under the sun...
I saw les claypool in 2007ish play a single string stand up bass with a lever attached to it to change the pitch and he was slapping it with the bow too. Was pretty wild
yes it is a thing. A bass in an orchestra is played with a bow. This is an electric base so the body of the instrument doesn't amplify the sound but is still a bass none the less, so a bow will still work just fine
I do love me some Cello, but I'd love to see / hear more of this because it feels different. It's probably pretty limited in what you can do, but it's still dope.
it’s funny bc it sounds a lot like a cello with the bow part! I think it’s tuned for it maybe? Idk, i play cello tho and I was impressed bc of the flat fret board it must be very hard to play w/a bow!
Ikr?? Am astounded he produces such a gorgeous tone with that bow hold. It took me 10 years of learning violin before I had enough control to play something other people actually were happy to listen to 😜... String instruments are notoriously difficult to master, yet this guy who is a bass player just picks up a bow and says 'lets give this a go', and its stunning!!
I could be wrong, but I'm guessing it's a LOT easier to get a decent sound using a bow on a fretted bass or guitar than it is on a violin. I'm not belittling the skill involved here, but when you're dealing with a fretted instrument, you don't have to be as exact with either your finger placement on the string or the pressure and angle of the bow in order to get the right note, because the frets do so much of the work.
I hope this gets made into an entire song. There are so many artists here on UA-cam that make incredible pieces, but only a snippet of them. This is one of those snippets that would be a loss if it wasn’t brought to its full potential. This alone was good enough to my playlist. Hope to see an extended version.

Poor DR!P couldn't handle the heat? The music industry names instruments like Florida names roads, with no rhyme or reason.... Acoustic guitar, electric guitar. String bass, bass. I guess it's better than calling it a salmon.
So in some of the comments on the comments, people have identified that this bit of music appears in a longer song in a single called “Return to the empty city we once called home” by an artist named “people legend”. Except this part of that song sounds EXACTLY like this, down to the littlest nuance of performance, just with worse sound quality…plus that single seems to have come out AFTER Mr. Berthoud posted this video. People Legend has a few complete albums, and they honestly sound like they’re all made of songs which themselves are just made of other people’s music. It’s a bit of an unsolved mystery…but it seems pretty clear that at least as far as this video goes, Mr. Berthoud did it first!
For anyone that’s hoping this single will have a longer version of this video... it does not. But I agree with Blair, I think they adopted it from here!
There's a meme about things becoming increasingly derivative of the original thing until you eventually come full circle back to the original. I think this video demonstrates that in a way lol. Even though it's an electric bass, it can be played with a bow like an upright and produce beautiful results
Haha I was thinking of that same thing. Like this sounds lovely and is cool to see this done on a bass guitar - but also I’m not that surprised, as someone who started playing bass with an upright in an orchestra. And tbh it would sound even better with a violin and upright string bass playing the parts. But it’s nonetheless cool to see it all done on one instrument.
Bowing a bass guitar is one of those things that gets rediscovered every few years and I am here for it. This is by far the best version of the idea I've seen/heard. Well done.
@@mariuspoppFM Jonny does use a bow on an electric guitar for pyramid song yes, don't think they ever did it on a bass though Colin does play double bass sometimes
Very nice! A couple tips from a strings player: the more perpendicular you can get the bow to the string the more consistent a tone you will get. Also you can apply a tiny bit more rosin to the bow to improve your tone, however be aware that this will leave a residue on the strings (if you wipe the strings down soon you should be good though). The things that influence sound the most are contact point (where on the string you have the bow, this will affect the overall vibration and how much the bow will need to move for sound), speed of the bow (how fast you're pulling it across the string), and weight on the string (not really as applicable here, but eh, now you know)
@@galumptiouspotato9989 well not really. It just means at right angles to the strings length direction. So bow in line with the frets. The seems eminently possible?
I was bored during lockdown so got a cheap violin ... I figured it was a reversed fretless bass (5th v 4ths so mirror image). I don't seem able to get rosin to stick to the bow - or I got a defective one - alas my violin pal now lives other side of UK so.no chance for him to show me. Instead I stick with the samples on the EMU Emulator. But if you have any YT hints on rosin etc please send them my way. Do you think bow would be less or more effective on nylon coated bass strings?
@@stephenhookings1985 You can basically scratch the rosin with sandpaper or the back of ur bow to get the powder, then u can apply it by passing the rosin on ur bow. I also bought one and thats how a lot of professionals do it apparently

Don't think of it as a replacement, but more as a new member of the orchestra, something to add new flavor to the sound (don't mind me wandering sax player)
I mean, it’s definitely not the same thing Cello has a rich and deep sound that this can’t really make even though it has a fresh and bright sound to it Speaking from a violin player!
Oo, I asked for the same!...I do hope it happens... In fact, I hope this becomes a thing. Ya know? Just good music once again. The music industry needs to seriously slam a hand on the reset buttons....
And suddenly, he has a brain explosion as he realises the “Base” is named after the orchestral instrument it was designed to replace, hence the reason it sounds like one when bowed like one. Now, we need him to male more music like this.
The Electric bass was originally designed to replace acoustic upright basses in popular music in the 30s by Paul Tutmarc . Later put into production by Leo Fender and George Fullerton as the “P Bass “ when Fender started expanding their product range from telecasters and Strats .
To add to the previous reply, there was an expectation in the early years of the electric bass that some upright bass players would want to continue playing in their previous style, but with electric amplification, including even the use of a bow. That being the case, some early electric basses had an extendable leg where the rear strap button is on any modern bass (center at the "butt" of the instrument) that could be used to balance them on the floor like an upright. For whatever reason, few if any players tried this, so for approximately 65 years, we have been robbed of the tones that might otherwise have been achieved by such an arrangement.
You are great at finding the groove, and playing bass. Even more than that, when you play you breathe life into the piece. Thank you for sharing your talent with all of us.
I'm obsessed with this piece. It makes me feel like I'm standing on a very tall hill, watching as the morning sun crests over the horizon in the distance and catches on the rolling fog. Everything is bathed in the glow and a warm summer breeze carries the scent of wildflowers.
For a while in the late '70s a company made a device you could mount over your bridge and give you a button over each bass string, you could press the button and lower a spinning disk to each string, giving a bowed sound to your electric bass without having to bow -- because the flat topography of an electric bass doesn't lend itself as well to an actual bow as an upright bass does.

I have synesthesia, and when it's dark and silent it's even more vibrant, so listening to this with my headphones, and in pitch dark was so beautiful, idk what it is about instruments with bows, but they are always so blue, and purply, and they flow like a string of smoke, making spirals, going up and down, at the 0:49 mark it was so so pretty, i felt my eyes watering, you know when light hits water and it does a reflection? It was similar to that, and it was flashing slowly, i got chills 💖
The song is beautiful. Just so you guys know, double bass with a bow is a thing and it sounds just like this (without the mixing), so if you like that sound, there's more of it out there
This is kind of like those electric cellos, but I'd imagine not quite as expensive. I was looking at getting an electric viola, until I saw the price... The last instrument I bought was $200 for a bass ocarina, so I think I'll stick to wind instruments for a while... But that sound is just fantastic!
Electric cellos aren’t that expensive to build. They’re just a solid wooden board with a angled neck, a laterally curved feet less fingerboard, a hand-carved bridge, a piezo pickup under the bridge (or hopefully someone can be smart and make a curved magnetic pickup that clips under the end of a cello fingerboard), worm gear pegs would probably be better on an electric, the end piece and fine tuners, accompanies by a horse hair bow properly rubbed with rosin. All of those are relatively cheap. It’s the strings that are crazy expensive. Mostly made from steel these days but tungsten, silver windings and gut/synthetic-cores are not uncommon.

The delivery of musical images, an auditory element, was a score and performance that contrasted not to match the cat, and at the same time, the creativity of creating a harmonious section that seemed to auditory depict the cat's cuteness and the cat's steps stood out.

I played classical bass for a few years and things like this are why I just loved the sound. Started on violin, but moved up to the upright bass and never looked back. Definitely has some cello/ viola vibes - just such an awesome arrangement. Looks like a cello bow. Props for not getting rosin all over your frets.
Just curious, is there even a difference between a classical bass and a cello?

@@Durzo1259 In addition, even the shape is different: round shoulders on the cello's upper bouts, but sloping shoulders (a true viol shape) on those of the upright bass (hence its alternative name of "double-bass viol").
@@Durzo1259 a big difference, the bass it WAY bigger, and is also way lower. The way you tune it, the bow hold, and the finger patterns are also different. When you play the bass you shift a lot too. @@rattlehead999 Talent isn't just innate, it's passion and dedication and a yearning for improvement and a strive to learn, knowing you can and will always improve
@@rattlehead999 Is that not still talent? Talent is talent whether it's earned or naturally gifted.
@@rev9737 The definition of talent is an in-born skill. Nobody is born playing the bass. The baby/2-3 year old, doesn't just grab a bass guitar/bass and start shredding.
But the younger you start a kid, the better the person will be, because kids learn and adapt extremely quickly and you ingrain the skill them from a young age.
Which is why instead of neglecting kids to the "education" system, which wastes 12-20 years of people's lives, they youth and produces weak, stupid useless people(that goes doubly so for STEM), parents should start sending their kids to private courses from the age of 10-12 in one engineering field, or one trade, or law or commerce, so by the time they are 16-20 they can be highly skilled and knowledgeable professional experts, instead of being 22-27 and applying for an internship/junior position to every company under the sun...

yes it is a thing. A bass in an orchestra is played with a bow. This is an electric base so the body of the instrument doesn't amplify the sound but is still a bass none the less, so a bow will still work just fine

Pretty sure a correct bow hold would make this nigh impossible

How’d it go?
The things that influence sound the most are contact point (where on the string you have the bow, this will affect the overall vibration and how much the bow will need to move for sound), speed of the bow (how fast you're pulling it across the string), and weight on the string (not really as applicable here, but eh, now you know)
He’s on a guitar so getting it perpendicular is impossible
@@stephenhookings1985 increased temperature and humidity could help a dry powder adhere to a dry, frayed, taught fiber.
@@stephenhookings1985 You can basically scratch the rosin with sandpaper or the back of ur bow to get the powder, then u can apply it by passing the rosin on ur bow. I also bought one and thats how a lot of professionals do it apparently

And suddenly, he has a brain explosion as he realises the “Base” is named after the orchestral instrument it was designed to replace, hence the reason it sounds like one when bowed like one. Now, we need him to male more music like this.
Basse actually means low, for the low notes. Hence the bassoon, etc.

I've never heard or seen this before. Those tones coming from a bass. Incredible dude.
