Too bad they didn't play the PC version of Toshiden 2. It has an amazing bug/feature where the framerate is unlocked, and the gamespeed is directly tied to the framerate. So if you play it on any modern computer, it runs at 600+ FPS and fights last about five seconds.
Some things should be said about the Toshinden series: 1) The music is great 2) David, Tracy and Vermilion are neat designs 3) The Game Boy Toshinden is actually pretty good. It's Fisticuffs material for sure, if only for a compilation episode on handheld-only fighters 4) the shitty mechanics, slow speed, poor animations, jank, bad voice acting, Engrish, and the typical Japanese goofiness like Chaos in 2 or Bayhou and Naru in 3, makes for a fun but frustrating evening 5) the music is great
You can hear the pure fear in their voices once they reach the last game and it plays like Naruto. Like determined Death, the Ninja Storm can never truly be avoided, only prolonged. There's a storm coming. Can you feel it?
Son of a bitch: the ole Arc system Fisticuffs actually being just one of those How to Draw Anime books I saw once in middle school switcheroo. ya got me
I remember I played Ellis once and defeated a enemy. Ellis was close to the edge of the ring while she made her winning pose. She fell out of the ring and the enemy got a win for that. THIS GAME IS A DISASTER.
Oh man, first thing I saw was "Battle Arena Toshinden" and I went "Oh yes! I remember loving that game". Then I saw it was Scrublords and went "Oh no! This means it was balls!" lol I still have good memories playing it with my friend on his Saturn.
+professorBofFPU The best part is he doesn't even know it. It got passed down to him as Caliburn and he never looked up what that was. He's just some clueless asshole who runs around swinging it going *"Yeeeaaah."*
+professorBofFPU I like how the player version of Veil is just as ridiculously OP as the arcade version. This is how you make a playable boss character, no nerfs needed.
Why did they cut out a few seconds in the middle? What kind of racist, despicable child-murder related super-sexist dark joke did they make? Something that even Pat wouldn't be comfortable saying in public? *I must know!*
I used to own Toshinden 4 and all I remember is that there was a big dude with big ass arm cannons. I think he had a super where a giant gun came down and attached to his upper body.
Now I can never guess who pics what games for FNF/SL but I know for a fact Matt picked this. His scent is all over this. You can almost hear it whisper "Ickey Pooey"
"There need to be more fighting game characters with chainsaws..." Pat said in a video released just days after the team shat on Leatherface in MKX. I won't assign blame to a specific member, if by chance I misremember, Woolie will get butthurt and expose me on stream...Though I suspect it was Liam.
AussieDragoon Chainsaws are awesome. Leatherface is awesome. But compared to every other character in Mortal Kombat, Leatherface is super lame. But chainsaws are still awesome.
Toshinden 2 is far and away my favorite bad fighter. I probably put as many hours into it as I put into 3rd Strike, just because my options were so limited as a kid.
+xCr00k3Dx Yep. Tekken and Samurai Shodown got OVAs around the same time, too. Honestly, the best of that shitstorm was the Fatal Fury trilogy, because at least they were silly-bad, not just... bad. Oh, and the SF2 anime, but that one was legitimately good.

If you're talking about the SF2 animated movie I'll agree that it was actually really good, though I remember the cartoon series not being not that good as well. Anyways, I watched the Toshinden anime last night (yay youtube) - it was hilariously bad in almost every single capacity, except for the English VO, which was just straight bad (the uploader had one subbed, and the other dubbed). It was REALLY obvious that no one on the production team gave two craps about it at all.
The sad thing is that the Gameboy version by Takara is actually pretty good, one of the better portable fighting games to me at least. It's a much more traditional 2d fighter, though how it has a sort of three strikes policy for ring outs helps make it interesting.
+munnypantz It seems flashy and fun at first but it falls COMPLETELY apart once you get into it. The game has like 4 pre-programmed combos and a super and the transformation and that's it. So you just spam a single button all day. It's utterly mindless and the CPU is a turtling bastard. You can, however, make a combo in the combo maker that is unblockable and spam that instead. Oh and the game has NO fucking modes. There's story and VS and that's it and Story uses pre-set characters (not sure if you get to use anyone other than the boring main guy) so no real "I just wanna play a cool character against the CPU" mode.
Woolie M There's a moment during one of the initial first fights in one of the games (i could go back and search for it but whatever) where woolie starts wrecking shit with a character and pat's like "that's because he's a boss character"
5:50 Pat you utter liar, you may fool the children but some of us actually played Virtua Fighter, are you forgetting the quarter second delay between button press and action or the moon jumps or the flat totally untextured polygons?
As bad as the series is, I can at least enjoy the first game as like a guilty pleasure type of thing where like it's bad, but it has the excuse of being an early 3d fighter with some nostalgia behind it and some of the ultimates (YES, Toshinden 1 had ultimate moves, believe it or not!) were alright. But like the further the series went and stayed shitty, the less of an excuse it had to be bad, if that makes any sense, even though they're actually improved games to an extent. Just thought I'd throw out my thoughts on the series.
OH YEAH!!! I used to own the very first Toshinden game. That intro crawl! It's all coming back. I remember the PlayStation version being slightly faster than this Saturn version, though. I hope You guys continue with Killing Zone or Cardinal Syn.
It hurts to hear you stepping on my nostalgia goggles. I love Toshinden 1 and 2 to death. Characters and music are groovy, game mechanics in the sequel were really interesting.
The first three games were a steady improvement. They didn't touch on Toshinden 4 here, but it's better that they didn't because that game is even more underwater than the first.
Flashing back to 12 year old self and friend playing Toshinden 2 as Chaos and not thinking it was a pile of smeg because holy shit we were easy to impress back then. Shit looks like "Battle Arena MS Paint" Jeeeezzzzzz
Duuuuuude! I owned this on PlayStation years ago and couldn't for the life of me remember the title or names of characters. As soon as I saw the first stage I knew 100% that this was that weird game from my childhood that I played. I finally have a question answered. Thank you, almighty Zaibatsu!
no joke....me and my childhood friend would always play toshiden 2 whenever I went over to his house...he gave me the ps1 disc and I proudly(?) still have it,but it finally cracked after years of toshiden greatness.... R.I.P toshiden 2 disc....
I had no idea the guys did a video on the toshinden series until now. Hell, I had no idea this series existed until sony announced it was gonna be on the ps mini xD
Yes it is actually, its one of the very first if not the first fighter to truly move in "3D". It also helped showcased Playstations CD quality audio with some great music. Lots of unnecessary hate for this series imo.
Awe, I played the shit out of the first Battle Arena Toshinden when I first got a playstation (and a while after it). I loved that game! Thanks for playing this series!
I remember this game being shown all over when the ps1 came out in the USA. It was insane and then Tekken came out and it was forgotten. Ellis has a really good theme song in the first game. Still listen to it and it is 2020
+Nurse Valentine Got one when I was a little shit, had Virtua Fighter, Virtua Cop, Scud, Panzer Dragoon, Resident Evil, and some racing game (came with the steering wheel controller and everything) - it was aight, I played the hell out of Virtua Fighter, Panzer Dragoon and Virtua Cop.
More evidence to support the theory that my matrix must be glitching out, it says saturday morning scrublords but I am almost certain it is currently friday. My reality is falling apart, and the best friends are to blame. Thanks, woolie.
It took them a while to discover the one thing I remember from playing Toshinden around the PS1's launch: the sidestep moves are devastatingly overpowered. In the first game I always played Duke and mashed his Cyclone move, because it was practically the only one in the game that had horizontal priority, and I was invincible.
It's so weird but I remember that when this first game out alongside Tekken, everyone I knew said BAT was the future of 3D fighters and Tekken would never last. Things change.
The deal with Kayin's voice acting is actually pretty unique compared to the other characters in the first two games. In the original Japanese version of toshinden 1, Kayin is the only character with an English voice actor (or at least a Japanese person who can speak way better English than the other VO's) it's fine, but SUPER generic. I actually like the US version's over-the-top cartoonish Scottish accent way more. For Toshinden 2, the rest of the returning cast seems to be carried over from the JP version of the first game... EXCEPT Kayin. He was replaced with a very obviously Japanese VO. Which, since they dropped localized voices for the western versions, at least fits with the rest of the characters better.
Oh my goodness, Toshinden. I had the Gameboy version when I was 6, and it was the one of the first fighting games I ever played. I wasn't sure it was a real game for a really long time until I read it's Wikipedia article.
10:08 Dammit guys, Obari only did the terrible OAV. The game's designer is Kotobuki Tsukasa, the other distortedly '90s anime artist who does porn. One time he went to a con and got drunk with a bunch of Canadians. It's your national duty to know this!
Say what you what you want about Toshinden. The music is still fucking god like plus it was really fun back in the back. I think it was the first 3D game I played.
I actually like Kotobuki's 2D art character designs from Toshinden 1 and 2, too bad they didn't transition well into the game models themselves. I think that Naru was Kayin's daughter or something......and you guys forgot the "Puzzle Fighter" and "Card Battle" Toshinden games.
I remember playing this on PC I couldn't get both the music and sound to work at the same time because I didn't understand how to set up sound for DOS games, but it did have Earthworm Jim as a playable character!
I have no idea why, but this reminds me of Ehrgeiz: God Bless the Ring I don't even know how I played that game, I didn't have a PS. But I remember it being awesome.
so i didnt quite realise it until the FMV, but the nostalgia bomb i got was unreal!! i used to have this when i was a kid and i fucking loved it, bad or not!
Personally I preferred 2 over 3. And I really liked the first game. And, no, this isn't some 20 year nostalgia coming up, I first played it 7 years ago and liked it.
Yea, the hate boners these guys get for Toshinden is really over the top imo. These games are clunky messes but they have a ton of charm and enjoyable aspects to them.
Too bad they didn't play the PC version of Toshiden 2. It has an amazing bug/feature where the framerate is unlocked, and the gamespeed is directly tied to the framerate. So if you play it on any modern computer, it runs at 600+ FPS and fights last about five seconds.
+Combo VS The World
Did Bethesda make the port?
So matches end 3x quicker than nomal?
Thank the Lord for Rivatuner.
Some quick decisive matches on modern PC 👊🖐️🤚🤜🤛 game over player 2 wins 🙄
5 sec matches awesome
Some things should be said about the Toshinden series:
1) The music is great
2) David, Tracy and Vermilion are neat designs
3) The Game Boy Toshinden is actually pretty good. It's Fisticuffs material for sure, if only for a compilation episode on handheld-only fighters
4) the shitty mechanics, slow speed, poor animations, jank, bad voice acting, Engrish, and the typical Japanese goofiness like Chaos in 2 or Bayhou and Naru in 3, makes for a fun but frustrating evening
5) the music is great
+Potidaon And man, you guys missed out on some great laughs by not doing Ten Count's and Sophia's supers in 3. KOORU MII KUIIIIN!
100% agree about the gameboy game
Yeah the charecter select music in 3 is God tier
Shame the music in this video was cut off by the "BBWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" of their AC
Rungo's Toshinden 1 theme in the words of DDP "jacks me up!" at the gym.
Liam forgot the Groose theme!
he forgot the Groose theme?!
*YOU FORGOT THE GROOSE THEME?!?!*
Fucking Liam.
+PureMetalDragon Somebody's not gonna be Employee of the Month...into the Shame Car he goes~ :P
+PureMetalDragon
Also forgot to mix it properly. :P
In another universe, Toshinden is more popular than Tekken.
THINK ABOUT THAT.
in another dimension David cage is leaving konami and everyone is sad about it...so yeah, fuck other dimensions
+MrStatistx But in that same dimension, Matt became a famous rapper instead on Bless...think about that.
+DIO's Scary Monster and THE WORLD I actually loved this game along with Tekken as a kid. It was like a Pre "Soul Edge" which is now "Soul Caliber"
+DIO's Scary Monster and THE WORLD truly this is the darkest timeline
Who cares about either, idk even know wut teckcan is
You can hear the pure fear in their voices once they reach the last game and it plays like Naruto. Like determined Death, the Ninja Storm can never truly be avoided, only prolonged.
There's a storm coming. Can you feel it?
You're doing god's work.
+Christian Hansen funnily enough, they mention Naruto in this video. Looks like theyre going to be "prolonging" it for quite a while :D
who wants to put money on wether they do naruto before or after blazblue
this is the true naruto souls
+Christian Hansen You feel it too, don't you?
Son of a bitch: the ole Arc system Fisticuffs actually being just one of those How to Draw Anime books I saw once in middle school switcheroo.
ya got me
I choked on my drink, thanks for that mate
I'm confused.
OH MY GOD THATS EXACTLY WHAT THIS GAME IS
IVE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING MORE RIGHT
I hate this series I just learned existed. Can we erase this from existence? I prefer the world as I knew it an hour ago.
+PlagueOfGripes Shhh, it's okay. Just go back to your Bon Jon Jovis and your Beezie Boys.
But Dat thumbnail though.
+PlagueOfGripes Ignorance is bliss. I learned about ducks because of you. Your turn to suffer.
+PlagueOfGripes As long as we keep the Game Boy version, then sure. It is actually a solid fighter on that system, which is kind of a miracle.
but you hate everything who cares
Don't worry boys...
...they're gonna run low on fighting games one day, and they're gonna have to play Blazblue then.
Maybe even Naruto.
+Maddude They'll loop back to games they've already played before BlazBlue, P4U, and Naruto. Hell they already did with the Wu Tang video.
+Maddude I hope so... Because a few fighting games were made recently, and they didn't even touch a few other PS2 ones.
+Maddude After 5 more 3rd strike videos... which I will love watching.
It's been 2 years, they did Blazshit. But still no Naruto, good.
you mean Kakuto Chojin
I remember I played Ellis once and defeated a enemy. Ellis was close to the edge of the ring while she made her winning pose. She fell out of the ring and the enemy got a win for that. THIS GAME IS A DISASTER.
I wish I could have seen that shit
Guys, I just want to say, you don't have to do this to yourselves. Any time you want this to stop, Blazblue is just right over there.
Blazblue after KOF14.
Gotta love how they refused to pick the main character in all of the games.
Wow I can't believe they got to play KoF14 early.
I laughed way harder than I should've...
You're kinda not even wrong...
+Darksoul9669 Dam Son
+Darksoul9669 Man, stop making me feel sad. There's still hope that they can polish that game.
+Darksoul9669 Ow.
Oh man, first thing I saw was "Battle Arena Toshinden" and I went "Oh yes! I remember loving that game". Then I saw it was Scrublords and went "Oh no! This means it was balls!" lol I still have good memories playing it with my friend on his Saturn.
Why does woolie always start with the OP boss character.
All.The.Time.
I love that Kayin wields the real Excalibur
YOU REMEMBER!
And he carries it in a guitar case. You can't top that!
GOTTA ROLL OUT THE RING
GOTTA JUMP OUT THE RING
FOR WE FIGHT FOR THE HYPEST FIGHTING GAME
THAT IS
TOSHINDEN OF FIGHTERS 14
Why did they cut out a few seconds in the middle? What kind of racist, despicable child-murder related super-sexist dark joke did they make? Something that even Pat wouldn't be comfortable saying in public?
*I must know!*
I used to own Toshinden 4 and all I remember is that there was a big dude with big ass arm cannons.
I think he had a super where a giant gun came down and attached to his upper body.
I remember old eiji. He was grey with some beastly katana
+Ghost Nappa He literally turned into Kakashi.
SkewerSTARS he was so op lol
Bang-Boo
Now I can never guess who pics what games for FNF/SL but I know for a fact Matt picked this. His scent is all over this. You can almost hear it whisper "Ickey Pooey"
I've been requesting this before Pat and Liam even came to the channel.
If anyone, "I" picked it.
The Pickles You monster
+The Pickles You've been requesting this since before Pat came to the channel?
chowellith
Yes
Bit of a botch-job on the audio mixing of that intro, appropriately. You guys are really turning this "scrublord" thing into a way of life.
Eiji's Theme from Toshiden 1 is an absolute party banger mate.
@@ReideenMellowLink What about his theme from D-Xhird?
His theme from 2 is so much more hype.
"Pretty Boy With Chainsaw, Gun, and Trench-coat" is just going to be the Zombieman spin-off to One Punch Man
and it will be glorious
Slow and floaty? Oh, this is how Melee players see Brawl. I understand why they hate it. Everything makes sense to me now.
+Captain Haggard Also peep the music. With your ears.
When are we getting more Monday Morning Mammeries?
I remember renting the Battle Arena Toshinden OVA from Blockbuster as a kid.... Shit was dumb...
+Michael Scally Right there next to the Fatal Fury and Street Fighter OVAs in the "Japanimation" section.
+Michael Scally Wait... THERE WAS AN OVA FOR BATTLE ARENA TOSHINDEN?
I gotta see this.
***** I knew about Fatal Fury OVAs (though I've never watched them), didn't know about Tekken (which got an okay live action adaptation), and SamSho.
+xCr00k3Dx How about that ending credits theme? ("WAN TOO THREE GHAOOOOO!")
The sad thing is that the Gameboy version by Takara is actually pretty good, one of the better portable fighting games to me at least. It's a much more traditional 2d fighter, though how it has a sort of three strikes policy for ring outs helps make it interesting.
I don't know I think the newest Toshinden game looked the worst.
I agree. Reminds me of Evil Zone and CastleVania Judgment
+The Pickles Funny you mention that because on the recommended videos I see the intro and a full movie of evil zone.
+GELTONZ So its the perfect game for the Best Friends since all they do is mash buttons and do supers.
+munnypantz
"But the animu, tho!"
- Liam
Shit on this series all you want, but 1 and 2's soundtracks are fucking incredible.
The best was that you could listen to it if you put it in your CD player.
+EaterOfBoners Eiji and Duke's themes from the first game are the best.
+EaterOfBoners Yup. This deserves all the thumbs up. Also the Gameboy Game since it was just 8-bit Toshinden 1 music.
XD do you do stand up comedy on the weekends? ahahahhahaha XD
+EaterOfBoners Loved the introduction theme for 4.
51:27 this IS the best. I fucking love the idea of a child being thrown by the momentum of the sword its swinging
Woolie continuing his saga of always picking the bosses every fucking time
+PraiseTheSun20 When?
Woolie M There's a moment during one of the initial first fights in one of the games (i could go back and search for it but whatever) where woolie starts wrecking shit with a character and pat's like "that's because he's a boss character"
Woolie M correction, matt says it 27:20
Woolie: ohh shit this dude is fuckin nuts
matt: well he is the final boss
Woolie M I still love you tho
5:50 Pat you utter liar, you may fool the children but some of us actually played Virtua Fighter, are you forgetting the quarter second delay between button press and action or the moon jumps or the flat totally untextured polygons?

I can't believe I just spent an hour and 17 minutes looking at a still image of a trashcan
I almost choked from laughing with food in my mouth when Ellis just jumped out of the ring.
I'm not gonna lie supers do look kinda cool and satisfying to hit though
OH YEAH!!! I used to own the very first Toshinden game. That intro crawl! It's all coming back. I remember the PlayStation version being slightly faster than this Saturn version, though.

well time to watch this since I guess Toshinden is considered a Playstation "Classic"
I had no idea the guys did a video on the toshinden series until now. Hell, I had no idea this series existed until sony announced it was gonna be on the ps mini xD
It alright.
Yes it is actually, its one of the very first if not the first fighter to truly move in "3D". It also helped showcased Playstations CD quality audio with some great music.
Lots of unnecessary hate for this series imo.
Babies complaining this is slow. It's even slower on 50hz EU PSX and we fucking loved it when it came out.
Woolie and Liam's Talim impersonations got me right in the weak point. How did I subconsciously remember "Just kidding!" anyway?
That Sofia thumbnail tho.
You came here for 16:36, because so did I.
21:09 If you're just joining us, you're watching Dark Souls the Fighting Game!
I remember loving this game as a kid.
Awe, I played the shit out of the first Battle Arena Toshinden when I first got a playstation (and a while after it). I loved that game! Thanks for playing this series!
I just realized I've heard Sofia's voice clips from an old flash on Newgrounds way back when.
Jesus, that was a nostalgia blast.
I remember this game being shown all over when the ps1 came out in the USA. It was insane and then Tekken came out and it was forgotten. Ellis has a really good theme song in the first game. Still listen to it and it is 2020

+Nurse Valentine Not when games were still being made for it.
+Nurse Valentine People who felt the sunshine.
+paul duncan laughed too hard at that. A german youtuber that I really like just talked about Sonic R

I have one game they put out on Gameboy. It was actually pretty good considering these 3d games.
Lol I'm glad you guys got around to doing this. Fun fact I made my account name based off of Abel and Veil :D now the world can know
This, along with Jet Moto, Rally Cross, and a demo disc were my very 1st PS1 games ever.
I wonder if they are gonna play the copy or URA I sent to them for mailbag:) kenpachi ramasama from Hamilton New Zealand!
Love the new intro music for Scrublords
This is the Scrublords episode that keeps on giving.
We truly are the - DEHDLEH RRRRAAAAVE
I used to play this game alot and yes, rolling each other was what I remember clearly.
Truly the fighting game series that Fred Durst built.
The desync during the final game makes it so much better.
More evidence to support the theory that my matrix must be glitching out, it says saturday morning scrublords but I am almost certain it is currently friday. My reality is falling apart, and the best friends are to blame. Thanks, woolie.
I was actually hoping to see them keep going with the transformations.
It took them a while to discover the one thing I remember from playing Toshinden around the PS1's launch: the sidestep moves are devastatingly overpowered. In the first game I always played Duke and mashed his Cyclone move, because it was practically the only one in the game that had horizontal priority, and I was invincible.
12:40 these are animated and acted like some christain cartoon you would watch in sunday school
It's so weird but I remember that when this first game out alongside Tekken, everyone I knew said BAT was the future of 3D fighters and Tekken would never last. Things change.

I wasn't sure it was a real game for a really long time until I read it's Wikipedia article.
Aw an hour long Scrublords? Thanks guys. :)
that first Chaos win, I almost passed out laughing
Talk about childhood. I loved the anime and game XD
Ellis was my favorite
10:08 Dammit guys, Obari only did the terrible OAV. The game's designer is Kotobuki Tsukasa, the other distortedly '90s anime artist who does porn. One time he went to a con and got drunk with a bunch of Canadians. It's your national duty to know this!
Say what you what you want about Toshinden. The music is still fucking god like plus it was really fun back in the back. I think it was the first 3D game I played.
lol man i love your guys channel! Mad props from Toronto!
I forgot that I use to play the Toshinden games as a child. Like, i literally had forgotten this game existed till now.
I actually like Kotobuki's 2D art character designs from Toshinden 1 and 2,
too bad they didn't transition well into the game models themselves.
I think that Naru was Kayin's daughter or something......and you guys forgot the "Puzzle Fighter" and "Card Battle" Toshinden games.
wasn't Ellis Gaias daughter too?
Nice early footage of Dark Souls III PvP. Sword Artes look awesome.
This is actually pretty accurate.
That last game had at least three edgelords with a red and black color pallet, who designed that?
+Yashold DeviantArt?
I used to own Toshinden 3. Out of curiosity, I looked for a copy on Amazon. The cheapest copy was $175.
I guess I'll never play it again.
Battle Arena Toshinden 3, right? Try eBay.
The Onyx Viper I'll certainly do that. I remember being sad seeing it, because I actually really enjoyed the game.
Scott Lind I know the feeling, was heartbroken in seeing how much MvC2 goes for these days but at least it’s no Rule of Rose.
we couldnt get another vid of Salty Bet?!
I remember playing this on PC
I couldn't get both the music and sound to work at the same time because I didn't understand how to set up sound for DOS games, but it did have Earthworm Jim as a playable character!
+Doom2Guy Oh and Jim is just a reskin of Rungo

Come on Namco, forget Street Fighter crossovers.. Now it's time for Toshinden X Soul Calibur!!
Life before Soul Calibur
I have no idea why, but this reminds me of Ehrgeiz: God Bless the Ring
I don't even know how I played that game, I didn't have a PS. But I remember it being awesome.
so i didnt quite realise it until the FMV, but the nostalgia bomb i got was unreal!!
i used to have this when i was a kid and i fucking loved it, bad or not!
Battle Arena Toshinden Remix was sweet!
Doesn't seem the same without Groose's Theme. :(
Personally I preferred 2 over 3.
I enjoyed the Toshinden games, they really weren't that bad. I remember playing them for hours when i was a kid
But its Friday night...
It's saturday morning here, or rather, 3 AM.
yeah the same day every scrublord video gets uploaded. ..........
Tune in tomorrow morning for Friday Night Fisticuffs.
You can't control the saltstorm. All we can do is drink tons of water and hope to god it passes soon
