- How does my big guy friend break this trike we built?! I couldn't say no to helping out my buddy Shane with this trike we picked up. This 70's trike has a Volkswagen motor in it and needed some choppin work for it to feel just right for Shane. Watch until the end to see how big guy Shane breaks the trike! Scrap the off the shelf springer, build a one off custom wider springer out of heavier stock, add the springs you mentioned and put a fatty tire on the front to avoid blowouts to balance it out. You know he's gonna slam that puppy over and over cause its a blast ! 👍😎
When I built mine as a teenager. I copied this older biker dude‘s VW trike. The next year he built another that was rigid frame. No torsion bar BS. It was very short wheelbase, no heat shields, the N50s were the suspension. He built a wide glide style front fork with 2 inch solid hex stock. The fork was rigid on the front. That trike was Bitchin. If I were to ever build another. I would do it that way. Maybe even flip the tranny over and have the motor in the front like a Goldwing or BMW. Smitty

400 CV ans a 160 kilos lan on such a thin tricycle frame and forkn I wouldn't have ben suprised to have seen it broken in two pieces.

my neighbor had one called barbie killer, it was festooned with Barbie heads. He had a roof on the back that looked like a C cab with a bunch of skull cut outs on the back wall.. it would wheelie if you just breathed hard on it

Love it. It's totally him Steve. Only one thing I'd change.
That springer fork set looks cool, with the skinny up front, but it woukd handle dropping back down better on a glide type fork set. Think a Harley Fatboy cork set, using a pair of Ford Radius arms, to add about a foot or so of length, and a wider front tire. What's on it wouod work with an older dyna or suoerglide, with a smaller rider, but your friend is substantial. Needs a little more beef up front.
Reason I mention it is we built one for a friend that stands 6 foot 5, and goes 370. He almost trashed a Sugar Bear springer set, abd damaged the skinny front it came with, when he brought it to our shop. Ended up finding a wrecked 03 VTX 1800, and scabbing the neck, firks, front wheel and brakes, and extended the fork tubes that way. He can damn near get it verticle, and land with no issues. We also removed the foot throttle, and went with the dual cable hand control, as well as double discs, to aid on braking.
And it still lopks cool, even though it's not old school. Wishing then both a safe trip, and we are going to Sturgis this year as well. Hooe we get to see it there, and take a closer look.
First major rally since losing my leg in 21. Wife and I will run mom's Commando, and dad's CB 750, as the above knee amputation has me maxed out at midsize bikes currently. My 6th trip, her 2nd.

I had a front brake on mine that I could lock up. The front tire would just slide n smoke.

Late 90's early 00's there was a guy here in Vegas that rode a yellow trike who sadly died in an accident. He use to always ride by my work, loved seeing it go by.

Far too fun... Had seen quite a few back in the day. Buddy had one he called "The Bitch", with a 2 person back seat & a roof.
Seems like a couple of times each season he would proclaim " The bitch bit me !!". cause the front ends were so lite. Plus, we're up here near sand dunes in Michigan, saw a lot of those motors putting out 500+ hp in the 70's... Kool vid, great memories! Thanx !

As a big guy myself, little advice, he needs wheelie bars and a triple pipe (Adding double pipe, into a triangle pattern, double on bottom) reinforcement on the front frame bike portion leading to main body rear portion, I am 6ft 3 and 450 ish, wavering between 440 and 460 depending on the time of year, happened to me once and hasnt happened again, and as a big guy popping wheelies is hell of fun. For front shocks we actually rigged a couple of Heavy Duty coil springs from some jalopies at the salvage yard.

Might look at the rear wheel clearance w/passenger and luggage, gas, travelin weight.
Installed air shocks and have rode 3 across the back seat no issues

So I wanted to ask Steve! I have a 6.7 Cummins. But what really is the best option for lift pump. A Fass or Airdog. And there is one im looking at is a black market performance. At a good price.. Thanks
