    The reason I played Speed Duels was because I prefer playing paper over online, and Duel Links has a very predatory gatcha system. I also preferred the card design in Speed Duels, as it seemed to focus more on the iconic cards; Serpent Night Dragon and Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth were top tier, and the skills were designed around them.
    I think more games should try and learn from the more consumer friendly system that Legends of Runeterra has, but perhaps there isn't as much money in letting people outright buy singles for a fair price.

    Speed Duels are the only reason I'm even interested in Yugioh for the first time in 12 years. The simplicity makes the game approachable and more fun because you don't have to consider 10+ years of cards to collect and stay competitive. I hope it lives on post-covid. I spent a few hundred dollars and was able to basically construct all of the decks I could think of with the existing sets. That's impossible with the regular game.

  • @tenkyoken
    @tenkyoken 3 роки тому +40

    At the very least, the Battle City Box provides a time capsule of classic Yu-Gi-Oh that is entirely self-contained, able to be played like a traditional board game. Using cubeamajig deck boxes and card sleeves, it becomes a nice product to bust out for some casual fun. As for fixing speed duels, honestly at this point the only thing I could see being worthwhile is integrating speed duel cards into main sets and deck releases, being printed on select cards.
    Everyone hates War Rock and the Ice barrier structure deck is looking grim, but what if some of the cards were speed duel legal? Suddenly war rock is meta? and ice barrier tech cards could be used, even introducing synchros, xyzs, and links that aren't dragoon-tier. Seemingly random choices in reprint sets could introduce format defining cards that would normally see no play in the regular format. It would at least justify our products coming later than the OCG, having to decide which cards get introduced into speed duels. Unfortunately, it seems like rush duels will be our alternative format, but I'll still try it out when we get it.

    • @Marcusjnmc

      they already do that with duel links, the trap card massivemorph, skyfang brigade/aka fur hire, witchcrafters, they were all released into the ccg then fast tracked into duel links where they became top tier decks or part of top tier decks, they all currently have presence on the duel lnks F & L list, so kinda ended up being bad for the game used that way anyway, but it's basically been done & continues to be done , & without a 3 month delay, there's plenty of time in the R&D process prior to release to work stuff like that out or even to develop cards specifically for the side product like it seems they did with massivemorph

    Speed dueling got me back into yugioh, I think it’ll pick up and definitely know more people playing it. No ones looking for new cards on the daily from them given that there’s so many out already. It’s more of a strategy based game rather than it becoming extremely annoying with regular yu gi oh with endless negates. I honestly don't think Speed Duels has a future. When there's already the TCG, Rush Duels, a new Master Duel videogame coming up, a new Rush Duel videogame for the Nintendo Switch soon, and Duel Links.. I don't see a place for it. If people want to have a Speed Duel experience, they'll just play Duel Links like you said especially during these times. Not only is it objectively a better experience (there's tutorials, decklists, auto-build, etc for new players), but you also don't have to be face-to-face to play against people and cards are fairly easy to obtain through pure F2P grinding. There's Ranked, Casual, and Friend duels and the occasional PvP events like KC Cup or Turbo Duel Grand Prix if you wanna play with other people. The Chinese version of Duel Links even introduced a new Guild feature and a new "Monster Gate" where you can challenge a strong monster and even bring a tag partner with you and we can expect these two features to come to the normal Duel Links at some point in the future. There's just no reason to play Speed Duels or buy the products. It doesn't help that you're literally being sold back old cards and you can't even use any of them in any other format because they're only allowed to be used in Speed Duels.

      Ikr. Im new coming back to the game after 15 years. I think the fact the cards say speed duel right on makes them look out of place with the rest of the yugioh card history. It looks simple and cheap. Id rather they made different formats. Maybe a singleton format, where deck building is key, because it will make relying on the "HEART of the CARDS" to draw what you need in a singleton, 40 card deck with extra deck, rather than getting your playset of broken combo off cards that make you win turn 1,2, or 3...
      They need to make a new format or more... eventually. So much can be done to make this game great. To get started, Im building 2 decks right now. My cheap 3x Order of the Spellcasters Endymion deck im sure will beat my 200 dollar Horus/Ultimaya Tzolkin/Hieratics deck... but idc. I play for fun and FLAVOR. Deck building for flavor rather than power is what I care about.

    You mentioned not having Cosmic Cyclone... Speed Duels does have Cosmic Cyclone, it was just added last November.
    You mentioned that it doesn't make much sense to invest in speed duels, yet the cards in speed duels actually have value. In my opinion, it doesn't make sense to invest in Duel Links, as the cards literally have zero value whatsoever. You cannot trade or sell Duel Links cards.
    You can currently build a complete, Speed Duel meta deck for under $20. There are many single cards in advanced format that cost more than that, that people play 3-ofs. That argument never made sense to me. If money is the problem, Speed Duels is far cheaper than advanced. If money is not a problem, then why use it as an excuse?
    I completely agree about the booster boxes being rather lame, and the lack of a competitive scene definitely hurt. I honestly believe the biggest issue Speed Duels faced is that the biggest yugitubers brushed it off as a bad product from the beginning, and never really gave it a chance. You guys had a video at the beginning talking about the "problems with speed duels" about two years ago. We've had a rather large unofficial competitive scene, and we'd love it if you and other yugitubers would join some tournies and try the game out on a competitive level. The competitive side of things is really fun, and having big yugitubers advertise it more would definitely help build the community.

      not true in the slightest. many of the mini boxes have provided complete, competitive kog worthy even top tier decks in the past even if some of them fell off, there will be more in the future. look at Ritual Beast or Triamid. some main boxes also have complete decks floating around the SR or lower mark like Fur Hire and Lunalight that are cheap and easy to build and still just as competitive.

      @@lilsunny7399 I get that and I guess in a sense Duel Links has at times been free to play. I also get that you can compete with free decks even if you don't end up winning as much as you wanted. KOG is a nice goal that a lot of decks can reach, but if you compare the Speed Duel competitive, you have to compare to events such as Duel Links Meta. So considering wanting to win big tournaments as your goal for both Speed Duels and Duel Links, consider this:
      The most expensive best deck of the format in Speed Duel has costed less than $100. In Duel Links, such decks require money (no longer free to play), and sometimes require more money than Speed Duels. Speed Duels has the option to buy singles that are sometimes super cheap. Duel Links requires timely grind and a credit card. Dkayed even said that a card in a box can potentially cost you around 100 dollars if unlucky with the box. There is no such thing in Speed Duels. And in Speed Duels, the expensive cards are few. You can still buy 10 cents cards to 1 dollar cards. You don't need to spend gems and credit cars money to get trash cards like trying to get a Limit Reverse in Duel Links. Most cards are very cheap. I do understand ur point and I guess that in some scenarios Duel Links can be cheaper. But on the bigger picture, I would say no.

The format is short enough to get about two duels minimum in per break without all the tilting new meta gameplay. one thing i think you failed to mention is that speed duels best caters to that yugioh consumer who loved the game as a kid but hasn't picked it up since it got too "complicated". This simplified strategy with no links or pendulums is what peaks the interest of the OG DM-era duelist. Someone who probably hasn't thought of yugioh for years could pick up the battle city box and keep it next to their cards against humanity and monopoly on their game shelf. I have not played yugioh since 2012 and randomly got into duel links. one month later i've logged in to play every day and love that its a way to play yugioh in a general sense. I would totally get the battle city box just to teach my friends how to play for a game night, but having that said this limits my interest to casual play only and i would not spend a dime on speed duel cards otherwise.

    @Team APS Plus: Eventually speed duel will become just as bad as the normal kind of duel, because of synchro, Xyz, and pendulum, however it will not be as bad, because of the short field, but it can become close to becoming bad, in duel links their is already pendulum monster in does speed duel, and pendulum monster consistantly FTK the opponent in speed duel, well they did add a rules to ballance the pendulum monster, in speed duel if a pendulum monster is face-up in the extra deck, you can only pendulum summoned, and/or special summoned that monster from the Extra deck once per turn. If you Xyz summoned an Xyz pendulum you don't follow the once per turn rules since in that case the pendulum monster was face-down in the Extra deck, the same if he is special summoned from the Extra deck while face-down in the extra deck the pendulum monster will not follow the once per turn rules.

    So where did they go wrong? Marketing for sure. OCG deciding they wouldn't support it was also a big hit to them. And content creators for advanced also barely showed interest, so much so that speed duel relies on its own small yugitube community. And its biggest flaw, it didn't offer an official comp scene, giant cards are $1000 tournaments, but only at YCS and with nothing in between. Luckily, the speed duel community took this into their own hands and host their own tournaments constantly, most online. Recently even a live tournament with 100+ players and a $500 prize pool. So it definitely made big mistakes hindering its own chance of success. However, a lot of critiques is imo also unjustified. It's not a new game. It isn't trying to be. It's an alternative format like modern, standard, commander, etc are to MtG. I also hear a lot of complaints about being able to play your old yugioh copies of a speed duel card and I get where people come from, but would you rather have them go the rush duel route and reprint some classic cards and just have you buy the exact same card, but with a different name and image that you can't use in advanced? They would have sold you something either way. Speed Duel decks also almost never cost more than like $30 for a complete competitive deck, which is the equivalent of being able to join the comp scene after buying 3 starters, but most cost even less than that. And we have many skills DL doesn't have. None of the comp used skills are available in DL.

That is was unsold me, I was thinking of giving it a shot because the only thing I thought I needed to invest in would be the skill cards. Now that I know you have to use the actual speed printed cards, forget it. I do think that Konami should start supporting different formats too. First of off I Agree with ‘Dzeeff’ when he said that the one advantage of playing Physical Verses Digital is that, Yes ‘Speed Duals’ is Basically ‘Dual Links’ but in real life. But the only Advantages that ‘Speed Duals’ have over ‘Dual Links’ that The Cards that you Pay are Forever, just in case for whatever the reasons Konami stops Supporting ‘Dual Links’ than all of the Cards and Achievements that you have Earn in Game are now gone with ‘Speed Duals’ you don’t have to worry about that, and there are a few other things he said in his ‘Digital V Physical’ video that escape me right now. And with that said, I have a Strong Feeling that as soon as ‘Rush Duals’ comes out for us it would easily Replace ‘Speed Duals’. The Biggest Mistakes that I think Konami made with ‘Speed Duals’ are the First is they make it Feel Like At Least to Me anyways, they make feel like all they are selling with ‘Speed Duals’ are the ‘Skill Cards’. Instead of an Entire New Card Game Based on the Yugioh Card Game. Any ways the Second is that they Don’t even try to make it feel deferent from ‘Dual Links’. The Third is that to me at First it I think even now it just Feels again to me that Not All of Decks are made Equal when using as is. And what I mean about that is that One Deck could be Way Much Stronger then another by like a lot. And the Fourth and probably the Final Reason is that ‘Speed Duals’ just simply feels way too slow compared to the ‘Master Dual’ with understandable reasons, and the ‘Old School Slow Play’ may not be everyone’s Cup of Tea especially for those that didn’t knew Yugioh Existed until the Zexal Era or whatever. Again with Understandable Reasons. Along with on top of everything that was said in this Vide.

Surely there was a way to design compelling product (rarity upgrades, reprints of old cards etc.) without forcing people to spend 10 bucks on what should be a 10 cent common. Speaking from the "future" Speed Duels are still continuing on especially after the Battle City Boxes positive reception. The only problem I can see so far, aside from the long hiatus between the last products pre-B.C.B, the Battle City Box, and now the GX Duel Academy Box, is that the product base may be just box sets with multiple structure decks now, with expansion box sets coming in the future as we are currently seeing with the GX sets. Which isn't entirely a bad thing, it is introducing more cards and later summoning forms at a decent, yet still kind of slow, pace without going too crazy with releases and new formats and cards, basically introducing long winded and excessive games with strategies like we see in Master Rule now where someone can win on turn one. But at the same time it is limiting the format to various box sets/structure decks which have a set pool of cards all around the range $20 - $40. Again it's still fine, but a part of me questions how long they can keep up with this strategy. Yes you can mix and match cards and strategies in the various structure decks provided, but I would still like the multiple booster packs that we got in the past to maybe add a little more spice, or rather variety, to our decks and strategies. Yes I know the box sets do come with a small pool of cards outside of the constructed decks for that purpose, but as far as I know it's also a set pool of them that you get in each box set, i.e. you and everyone else get the exact same ones in each separate box set, I could be wrong though.

  • @bbro43
    @bbro43 3 роки тому

    I think what could have made Speed Duels as a format work, was taking the idea they already established in Vrains. Maybe expand the limited 1 copy list for speed duel variants. But just shell out more skills and new (not reprinted) Speed Duel cards. Like if you wanted to play a Blackwing deck, you can use your TCG Cards, cut the deck and extra deck to the right deck size and just add a Crow Themed Skill Card. Want to just hop with your old Elemental HERO deck. Just buy a Jaden or Aster Skill card and again trim your deck down and your good to go. Honestly having Links, Xyz, Syncros would have been fine because of the smaller and limited decks, hands and field sizes. They honestly could have just pumped out Skill Cards for Anime Characters of all the different generations or for Specific Archetypes. Charged like $10 a pop for a booster of 3 or 4 Skill cards, and had a ready to go alternative format.

Which at this point a lot of those people didn't grow up with the series so the character stuff doesn't really appeal to them. And if they're playing competitively they kinda just like what they like and they're not really looking for another way to play. So people who are trying to get into yugioh and older players just don't know it exists or what it's about. I think it sucks that konami started teaming up with content creators to get more info out about their products but never did it with speed duels. Kinda just shows they didn't care.

    Speed Duels could be so much better. It sorta gives us another chance for good reprints like D.D. Crow and that Magnet warrior field spell which only had 1 printing at like $20 before the battle city box. Also I think the reason why they gave cards that “Speed Duel” mark is to keep it balanced cause it would be a very long list to see what’s legal and what’s not. And it would be busted if we had a full size library in this game. They could have done 2 things:
    somehow linked the sealed product with the app, so it would be an extra incentive to keep playing both. Link digital codes for gems and dream tickets for opening sealed stuff.
    Or produce more events and chances to get the same crazy rarity cards from the app

    I think Speed Duels should have just been more like an LCG and avoided booster boxes entirely. I know that's how Konami like to make their money back, but the R&D department doesn't need to put a lot of work into the game, seeing as almost everything is recycled from Advanced and Duel Links, so it's harder to justify dealing with randomised packs and potential short printing (not sure if they ever did that in SD though). The Battle City box was a great product in terms of value, as it gave you 1 of every card and still had rarity upgrades for whales and the thrill of opening product.

    I agree about being resold the same products but limited to one format, I wouldn't be too fussed if there were a Speed Duel legal list so you can use your collection regardless of origin, with the exception of Skill cards, but not being allowed to use your Speed Duel cards with the old ones because of two words printed on them is ridiculous when it forces you to buy them all over again.
    At least the designs of Rush Duel cards are visibly different from normal so you can't confuse a normal Blue-Eyes, a Speed Duel Blue-Eyes and a Rush Duel Blue-Eyes, (especially with that Legend stamp on the Rush Duel Blue-Eyes) but only being able to use cards one-way with normal and Speed Duel formats really doesn't make sense.
