Found a 1.95 fat boy at the antique store today...got it for 12 bucks...i dont know if thats a good deal or not. But the butterfly doors still work and so does the adjustment collar. Slightly pitted all over but not overly horrible.
I enjoyed viewing this video comparo. I just learned about the bottom dial tonight, and found this in checking it out. I have two Rhodium plated standard FatBoys, one from your inventory, and one you plated that was handed down to me from a great uncle. You did a great job on them. Both give me great shaves-head and beard, as well. Thank you! I’m usually at a #3 for the face and part of the head, and #4/5 for the back of my head.
Hi Daryll, Thanks so much. Yes Gillette should start production again. There are so many Companies still producing DE Blades and they aren't doing that for fun. There's a huge market out there that just needs encouraged and educated, they wouldn't look back, that's for sure. All my best, Stevie in Scotland.
@@stevied8855 old post but if they did it would still be Chinese made and Gillette in name only and would be no where close in quality vs the old ones. they actually made some razors recently but nothing Gillette about them.
Hi Matt, Very interesting. I wasn't aware that there was 2 types. I would love to see Gillette start producing DE Razors again. They could produce them in different colour schemes and themes like Batman, Star Wars, Motor Racing, Fishing etc etc, just like Play station does. The list is endless. They would make a killing on them for sure, and also introduce the world of DE Shaving to the younger generation who haven't a clue what their missing with all the incredible products available. Thanks Matt, always an education watching your channel. Steve in Scotland.
Red Island Shaver love the Feather blades. And you about have to use them in adjustables. Otherwise they can be too sharp. But they really work good in my 1960 Fat Boy
My question is did either of the razors fatboy pull on your beard while shaving in any direction on your face. I'm afraid of cutting my face. If I purchased a fatboy razor how often should changed the razor I don't want to irritate my skin. I want a close without cutting face which razor you recommend? Reason being is that my hand coordination isn't the best and im left handed my isn't right hand isnt the best either. Thank you Carlitos Millàn from Fontana, CA
The Shaving Realtor it doesn't cause damage, however it certainly doesn't allow the mechanism to work freely. It's like pushing the brakes and the gas the same time
Matt is wrong about this one. Both Fatboy adjustable razors are too heavy. The Fatboy is the first generation of adjustable razors. As anyone with a tech background can tell you, gen one is always the version with all the kinks and bugs to be worked out. The Gillette Slim adjustable razor, gen two if you will, would beat the pants off any Fatboy. How can it not? The Slim is literally what the engineers who designed the Fatboy would have come up with had they had four more years to work on the project. It would not be anything close to a fair fight. The Slim wins, hands down.
abrahamchapman you are correct that my personal opinion is that the slim is better than both, however that is not with this video covers. And for the record, slim adjustable was actually designed before the Fatboy as company records now indicate. Thx :)
RazorEmporium The 1961 model was developed before the 1957 model? That's weird. I would believe that Gillette had a slim version of the Fatboy on the drawing board before the design that became the Fatboy was on the drawing board. But the idea that the designs for the Slim were completed and ready to manufacture before the Fatboy does not make sense. In any case, Gillette's engineers had four years to make changes to the design of the Slim before production began, so the Slim is still at least four years better than the Fatboy. That said, a real contest is not between apples versus apples, it's between the Fatboy, Slim, Super Adjustable, and perhaps 1980s Super Adjustable (in 1979 the design of the Super Adjustable changed enough that it could be considered a different model). Somehow I get the feeling that Matt has many years of filming fun ahead of him before his run as the host of this channel is completed. On a related matter, the upcoming Rockwell Model T is a clone of the Slim, not the Fatboy or Super Adjustable, for a reason. It's difficult to improve on perfect, so don't even try (that's a bit of an exaggeration, there is always room for improvement, but the Slim is good as it gets; I have both a 60s and an 80s Super, and they are both a downgrade from the Slim).
I really enjoyed this video Matt! Thanks for taking us through this epic showdown!

Thank you for the up-loading. I have 2 Fat boys and now you got me interested in getting a bottom dial.
Kypros Christodoulides I have researched and it said that there were only 18 bottom dials made. There is one on EBay for $3,500.
@@thevman6499 not correct. we're about 30k made.
Very interesting, love to see more vintage razor comparison shaves, thank you.
I have to agree with Stevie D, Gillette should start manufacturing DE razors again. Informative video, Thank you

@@germanshepherd13 they actually started making them again a year to two ago, the handle is made in China I believe, but the head is made in Germany
Great video. Thanks for all the info and education you bring to the masses.
Fantastic video as usual, lots of really useful information. I love the history of these products. Many thanks.

Stevie D people have been saying this for 10 years yet I doubt they will.
RazorEmporium looking forward to heard how the Rex will do.
And then they could put like 8 blades per-side.
A Fatboy set to 3 with a Feather blade is an awesome shave! It's my only razor I use Feathers in... everything else I use Voskhods.
Red Island Shaver love the Feather blades. And you about have to use them in adjustables. Otherwise they can be too sharp. But they really work good in my 1960 Fat Boy
What was the weight for each of the tested razors 🪒?
Hey Matt you mention that you do not shave with your collection, which makes me curious as to what do you use daily?
sorry, didnt get the name of the razor blade you are using?
likely polsilver
@@RazorEmporium Thank You!
*Thanks for the vlog Matt!*
I don’t have a *Fatboy* (I do have a Slim K2 _that you revamped in rhodium_) does that make me a bad person? lol
David no it doesn't :)
Seen a bottom dial eBay for $4500.00. Was at $8,000 but never sold. Absolutely crazy prices

Interesting. Thanks for the share.
Great video. I love my rhodium production fatboy that you've refurbished for me, thanks again!
Matt.... Does it cause damage to the razor if you adjust it while the door is closed and locked?

I hate to say it, but I prefer the long handle Super Adjustable over the Fat Boy.
