That Otari is one great machine, and sounds amazing! Much better than a DAW, IMO. Definitely let us hear some tracks after you've made some recordings on it! Thanks Grady! Excellent vid as always!

Thank you! I'm going to try but it may be awhile mainly due to lack of a compatible remote. The 80-8 will likely be ready to use a lot faster.

the Otari looks insane. definitely a project and a half to get it up and running in right condition, but super worth it. appreciate you for these types of videos man!

Thank you! I think if I can find the remote, I should be able to get it working. It's in really good shape.

@@TwinCreekAudiohow heavy is the unit? I am looking at purchasing a 1” 16 track deck and it’s currently between the MS-16/85-16 Tascam vs. an Otari unit. Have you gotten the Otari up and running yet?

Those are awesome, definitely post progress videos as you bring them back to life
I miss my 80-8 so much, been really considering picking one up again 👍

I think the 80-8 will be easiest to get running properly so I hope to demo it soon. I hadn't heard it yet but everyone says they sound really good.

Thank you! I'm always working on ways to find cool analog gear to show in videos. I'm kind of a how to guy but also enjoy documenting analog gear from the past.

Thank you! I'm not really a technician but there's hardly anyone to work on this stuff around here so I started learning what I can to service some of this old gear

the space in the back of the 88 is for an external speed control these machines have no speed trim control. They have a tendency to run off speed. I just sold mine, also you can open the front panel to easily access the modular channel cards it is a good idea to check the capacitors remove the cards, and clean the contacts. I already regret selling mine except for moving it

Hopefully I can get this one cleaned up and working well enough for some demos. It should work well enough for my personal projects and having some fun.

Thanks for showing the oil tubes in the 80-8... not sure if mine has them or not. There were a lot of revisions on this deck so may need to look further. What oil do you use or purchase? If you don’t mind me asking?

I read on forums to use synthetic 0/20 motor oil so I bought some at Auto Zone and used a syringe to oil the motor.

I just picked up a 80-8 I think the pre’s sound pretty damn good when passing audio through as part of my recording chain. I look forward to utilizing some tape in my next recordings.

I have heard good things about the 80-8 but I've never used one before. Hopefully this one won't be too hard to get working.

hi wowo nice gear the tape machine looks good woow i have a old studer a77

    • @TwinCreekAudio
      @TwinCreekAudio  11 місяців тому

The Studer machines are excellent! I don't have an analog 2 track that works yet. There's a Tascam 32 in the garage that missing parts and a 22-4 that also is missing too many parts to be repairable.

    Well okayyyy...
So because of You, I bought a Tascam M-35 with a TEAC 80-8 and it's DBX unit, in fantastic condition.
I then noticed you had Your M-35 on Reverb, and I intended to buy it from you and reach out for a discussion. But now it's gone.
Did you sell it, or (hopefully) pull it, because you picked up the 80-8 that it's meant to be with?
Needless to say I am dying to see your restoration of the 80-8 in excruciating detail. I purchased a new Belt and Roller, but it seems to be perfectly functional already.
I also bought new Tape & Reels, plus invested a ton ot time researching Calibration etc.
Are you going to go so far as to get a new MRL tape and properly Calibrate and in the process take us with you?
I want to contact you to see how I can help that journey.
    G.

I decided to keep the M-35 for awhile longer to try it with the 80-8. I don't have a calibration tape for the 80-8 yet. They are really expensive now but hopefully I will get one that is correct for the 80-8 which I think uses IEC instead of NAB. I'll definitely try to make more videos as I have the time and money for parts etc. Right now, I need a reel hub and it's about $50 so I'll have to wait to do each step to get the money for the parts it needs. Its a little slow to get things ready for videos mainly due to the cost but I do hope to document more of the process. I'm not really a tech or anything. I just like to try and fix my own gear which you pretty much have to do since few people outside of major markets like Nashville and LA work on tape machines anymore. I'm really hoping the 80-8 doesn't need too much work to demo. I have quite a few things already needing repair or maintenance so I can feature them on the channel.

I love digital gear too. Some of the older DASH machines are selling cheap these days which is tempting. I did manage to find a remote for my MX-70. I just need a new pinch roller and remote cables to get it running. The Brenel mini 8 always seemed cool to me. They are not common here in the US but I've owned several Tascam and Fostex machines that were really fun to use. I didn't pay anything for the MX-70 but the remote cost a bit and I'm sure the other bits and maintenance will bring the cost up.
