It's interesting that the Japanese manufacturers all did a spin on the ARP Pro Soloist concept (Roland SH-2000, Korg 900PS and the Yamaha SY-1) but then ran somewhat in reverse to the Americans. ARP started big and modular and then went smaller with stage instruments and Roland and Korg went the opposite way, bringing out the big modular stuff later in the 70s. Yamaha went via the CS synths into digital FM of course, and it's all more complicated than I'm suggesting, but just broadly speaking the opposite paths are interesting. Anyway, this SY-1 sounds fantastic. Thanks for another enyoable demo Christian.
For me, really nothing else in analog world (VCO's and especially filters) is even close to amazing character of early Yamaha synths (SY and CS), that sound is pure pleasure, it sounds.. alive...
Oh wow! Some of those sounds can definitely be used in some EDM, trance, or techno music of today's era. Some of those tones have some fantastic shapes. What a sweet machine.
Прекрасное видео. Не так давно мой приятель модифицировал нашу SY-1, теперь она имеет CV/Gate. Подключив ее к секвенсору, мы никак не ожидали, что она зазвучит как TB-303, абсолютно кислотный саунд
i have one, and have had moments of madness where ive thought of getting rid of it... "ive got too much stuff, things have to go" thankfully i never do... theres a sound to the osc and filter thats just RAW... love to use it for bass and leads.... this thing can sing
@@PeterWalkerHP16c yep, i still use it.... it is temperamental though... sometimes theres issues with the contacts, and i need to give it a spray with some cleaner to make it good again.
Built into the Yamaha CSY-1 organ, however 1/2 the presets and not all the features are accessible except via mods. Yamaha CSY-2 was the next in the series - same basic synth engine but only the VCO was kept as an epoxy block vs. everything else discrete IC's. Very unique sounds as it predates the CS series that used custom analog chips throughout and digital keyscanner. Otherwise these earlier models were 'pure' analog. BTW the SY-1 epoxy modules were a subset of what were used in the flagship GX-1...
I really like this! It had many wonderful and weird sounds! It was it's own little monster. Now look at what Roland has produced! Roland is an amazing company and this little booger was ahead of it's time! It's light-years ahead of the ARP Pro-Soloist! I wish Tony Banks had found this first!
Wow, nice demo. If only Yamaha had allowed the sale of the SY-1 in catalogues in England. Their influence in early electronic music could have surpassed the place the MiniKorg 700 holds.
Holy smokes! At around 2:45 or so I could hear that sound that Ray Lynch used in "Celestial Soda Pop" on his 1984 album, "Deep Breakfast." Now I'm wondering if he had an SY-1 in his studio.
Hello AnalogAudio1 You should make sample packs or a patreon where we can pay to have full quality files from the jams and recordings of these amazing instruments you record. Thanks
Not shabby for Yamaha’s first foray into an industry that was still fledgling, didn’t have a lot of established presidents and did have a sizable amount of competition with the ones that had been established. They did pay attention to what people were purchasing and used it as a starting point. I might’ve bought one of these if I were alive 50 years ago when it hit the market. It’s incredible to look at the SY-1 name and then fast forward 15 years to when Yamaha unveiled the SY-77. Besides the two letters in the model name, there’s no similarity.
I'm just wondering what would have "Autobahn" sounded like, if Ralf, Florian & Conny acquired one of these in 1974 before the recording sessions...my guess is: even more organic and "sunny".
The lead for the first theme (1963) was made with a tone generator at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. They made two new versions of the theme in the 1980s, the latter using mainly a Prophet (idk about the other one)
sounds really good. I thought it would just sound vintage and be good by default just because its vintage but it has its own really nice sound. I like it a lot.
We think that it is a shame that the notations on the left, such as "transposing one octave up", are not announced through a vocoder or some kind of electronique voice manipulation/transformation device.
Fascinating and interesting video as always. I could not find a video on the SY85 or TG500. If you have done one, can you please link it for me? Greets and thanks for your great work, Wolfgang
I have a SY-2 very dusty and out of tune. VERY VERY GRIME AND OUT IF TUNE. Any tips where should I start to clean this thing up and make it in tune? Thanks!!
Thanks! No part 2, I think I showed the most of what the SY1 can do... it's a simple machine with only a few, but very good sounds. A part 2 wouldn't be very different.

The early Japanese synths are just simply amazing, albeit very limited (but it's always fun to work around the limitations).

Damn I miss my old SY-1. Such a lovely and expressive little beast 😊
Cool! I was just given one of these! :D
My favourite mono synth of all time. Such vocal-like filters.
No kidding! It was so expressive! I'm really impressed by this amazing little synth!

Клёво! Если будет время, сделайте видео-обзор, очень интересно!
Always love to see a new AA1 video out! 🎹
Thanks :-)
Surprisingly sounds way ahead of it's time and I could hear these sounds potentially in 80's pop music. Great stuff.
That's one rickety stand.
Never knew it existed!
It's a very unique sounding synth. Great demo!
3:56 is lovely, like something out of Watership Down
dholl synth music Lol covered in fur would be sweet look
There was one of these in a Goodwill (charity shop) near me, I got there too late. Dunno whether it worked, but it sold for $50.

Does it still work? The one I was using died in '76 I think. They were a lot of fun though!

Iconic video

I have two, you’ll have to pry them from my cold dead hands!
Great video - I have an SY1 and 2 - get the 2 if you are looking - a few nice improvements.
Wild and rich tones at once.
That synth is seriously ROCKIN'!

This looks like a fun device.
Wow!Great sound!👍
I have one! It's awesome. This is a nice demo! Kebu also has one and made a whole track with one.
This sounds sooooo good
Growlpet lives!!
i need one of this ??
I wonder if there is a vst version of it
I'm just wondering what would have "Autobahn" sounded like, if Ralf, Florian & Conny acquired one of these in 1974 before the recording sessions...my guess is: even more organic and "sunny".
Without the Minimoog, the Autobahn album would never happen.
@@AnalogAudio1 Exactly.
Some of those tones make me wonder what year the Dr. Who theme was synthesized? I wonder what brand synthesizer was even used on that iconic intro?

Классный саунд!
A Japanese Arp Pro Soloist (obiouvsly with different filters and thus different sounds). Perhaps they used this sounds in old mid-late 70s anime.
Amazing

Do you expect that from a 1974's monophonic synth? ;-)
@@AnalogAudio1 - Nein.
I was merely phantasyzing.
オルガンのドローバー感覚で音作りできるのが使いやすそうですね。
I hear the beginning of Numans Cars in there somewhere

Hi, thanks! No, I never owned these units. I don't find them exactly inspiring... plain romplers.
Had 1 of these back in the 80s, hardwired it to some bass pedals i ripped out of a Silvertone organ, big fun
I have a SY-2 very dusty and out of tune. VERY VERY GRIME AND OUT IF TUNE. Any tips where should I start to clean this thing up and make it in tune? Thanks!!
I would give it to a tech to repair it if you don't have experience with electronics repair.
wow bellissimooooo
Which one would you pick, SH1000/2000 or SY-1/2?
Clearly the Yamaha SY-2. It has even more control over the sound shaping. Sounds great.
I have all of them - SY 2 would be my pick
SY-2 more control 👊🏼👍🏻
And between SH-1000/2000 which one would be your pick?
@@AnalogAudio1And from all the « mono soloist » preset synth you’ve played with, I don’t know which ones, still the SY2 in top position ? thanks you.
красивая мелодия, я тоже люблю сочинять музыку
Play pop corn with this...😊
It interesting it has nothing to do with 90s SY series of synths
It actually sounds very good despite only presets. Better than Roland SH 2000.
Yeah, but the SY2 is even better.
Find a stable stand, please, very annoying. Great demo, but very short. Are you planning to make a Part2?
Thanks! No part 2, I think I showed the most of what the SY1 can do... it's a simple machine with only a few, but very good sounds. A part 2 wouldn't be very different.
