- In this video I bring out the 1975 Suzuki TS250 that I recently restored for its first full test ride. I show the machine and take it for a ride in the wide-open countryside of Big Sky Country.

I truly have not experienced anything more relaxing and spiritual than riding a two stroke out in the country away from "so called" life in town. This type of escape is a rarity amongst us, a luxury for the few of us, but Zen for all who still do it. Thank you Dale for sharing your Zen with us.

I graduated in 75 and these bikes were popular I had the 75 Yamaha I purchased new. I never should've sold it but back then they were all over. Love the Two Stroke sound and simplicity. We never saw it coming that they would be outlawed. One Rocket launch from our Billionaires would equal all our two stroke bikes pollution combined from then till now.
I know Rodney, they made great bikes that were so simple to work on. The good news is some of the manufactures are bringing back the two stroke and with new technology they smoke less. Just wish they would make them air cooled instead of water cooled.

Hi Debbie, bet Barry is close by too. The weather here is way too hot for me, been in the upper 90's to 100 for a couple weeks now, and more to come. It must be winter down under, we could sure use some cooler temps and some rain.

Well, bonjour to you too, these TS250's are really nice bikes, one of my favorites for sure. Sounds like your dad was a super cool guy taking you kids for a ride on his bike. Those are the memories we as kids remember the most from the early years. As you can see here, I am reliving my childhood playing with all these old machines. What fun it is. Thanks for hanging out in the shop with me.

But hers came from her father and is complete and in old but not too bad condition. She has watched your ride along with me. BTW, you are giving motorcyclists a bad name. You actually came to a complete stop at the stop sign. 😉
Thanks Bryan, these old machines are just awesome. I enjoy working on them and riding them. So much fun. The TS400 is a super bike, had one come through the shop about a year ago. Then sent it on to New York state. You guys will enjoy restoring that machine. Yeah, I know, for some reason I tend to stop at those signs. Think it's an age-related issue, I sure didn't when I was younger. Good luck with your project and thanks for stopping by the shop.

Hey Jeff, these are fine machines for sure. I think it will be a keeper for me. I am glad you enjoy the riding videos; I am trying to get my camera sorted out, so it is clearer and not as jerky. My plan is to get up in the Hi Country for some videos if I can get it sorted out before the snow flies.

Hey Murray, I just think the video should be better on these road trips. I am reading and playing with the camera. I have had some good tips to try by some of the viewers. Experimenting as we speak. I sure agree, the TS250's are strong runners.

Hey Graham, these riding videos are well accepted, I just wished I could figure out a way to make them sharper. But I am working on it and getting a lot of suggestions from the folks out there. Yes, these TS250 are very handsome, and the pipe is a lot of the looks for sure.

You know here at that distance I would have passed five dollar stores and ten gas stations. Love that beautiful country brother and the bike is sweet.

Yes, we have a lot of those stores too, but not as many I would imagine. Yep, got some of those dispensary's too.....why can't people grow up?

My original bell star is no longer with us, the inside just disintegrated. Bought this one back in the mid 80's.

Thank you, John, this one took a lot of work, saying it was in ruff shape is an understatement. I do have a playlist on this bike from start to finish if you're interested.
To think it was a wreck when it arrived in the workshop. Nothing more rewarding than to see a showroom condition rebuild out on the open road eating up miles. I would like to Dale riding his bikes into other scenic parts of the great Mountain State.
Hey Steve, yes it was ruff. It took some time and money to get it back, but riding it is great. Very nice bike. Yes, I am working on some trips to the high country, but right now trying to get the camera clearer and steadier. I am just not happy with the video on the rides, like it is in the shop. We will get there.
@@montana2strokeracer Hi Dale, IDK what camera you have but for GoPro 8 this works: In sunny weather, Frame rate 25, ISO 200, stabilisation Off, hyper smooth On, format 4x3, wind low, Bitrate High. Ironically stabilisation makes the image jerky on a motorcycle. You'll need an in-helmet mic.

Thanks Dave, this one took a lot of work and many hours finding parts. Still short most of the correct headlight stuff.
Just finished installing some 1980 185 forks and triple trees and 1978 185 swingarm and shocks on the 1971 TS185 and TS125. Made a big improvement in the ride and handling on both bikes. Also added a few frame gussets on both.
Starting to install some RM370 forks, triple trees, swingarm and shocks on the 71 TS250 and 74 TM250. Should have them done later this evening.

Hey Dale. Suzuki is coming out with a 2 cylinder TS 700 Apache for 2025. Not sure of the cost but sorta lickin my chops. It's super retro looking.

Hello Dale lovely little ride out. Your roads look lovely and smooth unlike here in the UK the roads are full of pot holes. So I was wondering if when you get time if you could do a video on setting up a carburettor and spark plug colour I no different bikes have different carb settings. Air screw settings ect. I have a question to, on my Yamaha DTR 125 YPVS 98 model I have a thin yellow spark, I tested the source coil and its fine and I’ve put a new HT coil and cap on it and it still has a thin yellow spark. I really want that fat blue spark. I was thinking my plug cap has a resistor in it and my spark plug is a resistor plug, going on what Yamaha state to use same as the HT coil and plug cap and all genuine parts. If I was to use a non resistor plug cap with the resistor spark plug would that give me the fat blue spark? I would like to know your thoughts on this please I do have a CDI on the bike but the Yamaha manual does not give you any reading for testing it. The CDI does work because my power valve works when riding the bike it also starts 1st or 2nd kick and it makes good power. But I really want that fat blue spark. Kind regards Brian.
Hey Brian, we have potholes too, these county roads are less traveled, so they are in better shape, that's why I like going out there. I really don't know much about bikes newer than 1973. But I will tell you this....CDI will never give the same spark as a point and condenser bike. But that being said the spark should be blue, but CDI usually is a thin blue spark. The older points bikes if running right will have a fat blue spark. The CDI has more voltage associated with the thin spark, but the amperage is higher on the points type bikes. You do not want to run a resistor cap with a resister plug, that is a new problem we have created by NGK not offering standard plugs anymore. So, if you are in that situation, change out your cap to a non-resistor. Not sure if that will give you what you want or not. Without having the bike to test I just can't really help with your issue. MY first 2 stroke was a new 1969 TS-250 lived that bike, eventually turned into a flat tracker, seat, down chamber bars tires all the neat racing stuff. premix also, damn it was quick off the line!

Nope it's on right, I get a lot of comments about those, they have an arrow molded into the plastic housing and it points in the direction of the carb. I agree that it looks backwards, but it's not. Good eye buddy!
Nice big country side. Where the heck do you go Grocery shopping at? How tough are winters? What kind of 2 stroke oil do you use in your restorations for oil injection bikes?
Yes, sir lots of country around here, only a million folks live here in the 4th largest state. Well, we go to the Grocery store, got several here in town. Winters can be really cold for short periods (25-35 below), but the biggest problem is how long winter lasts. When other parts of the country are enjoying spring, we have another 30 to 45 days of winter. The daylight is another issue, about 8 hrs. in the winter 16+ in the summer. On the other hand, it keeps the population down. Lots of folks move here, but a lot leave after their first winter. I use Yamalube in most oil injected bikes.

Hi dale, love the old TS250, i have a TS400. If you have problems with the video stuttering even though you set it to 60fps, you may need to purchase a better high speed SD card for your camera that can handle it. if the sdcard memory is too slow it cant record 60fps smoothly
Thank you for the info, and yes, the TS250 is a great machine, as is the TS400. I had not thought to look at the SD card. It says it's good for 4K, but I am going to order a better one. I have tried about everything else. Thanks for the tip.

PS. No sheep! Here a ride in the countryside is wall to wall sheep often on moorland 'back' roads on the road itself as often there are no fences.
We had temps and rain like that up till about a week ago. One day it was rain and 55F, the next it was dry and 90F. We feel like we got rooked out of spring here, went from the 50's to the 90's with no 60's, 70's, or 80's. strange year weather wise. We don't have sheep in this area, but cattle can be a problem since much of this area is open range....no fences.

Awesome, I remember riding my first TS250 at the dealership in 1975. This same model but was not able to afford one. So here I am years later, I am sold on it for sure. Very nice machine.
@@montana2strokeracer my mother bought mine new. I was 15 3 years later I put a tag on it. I was in the Ny mountains and it was only good for one rider. It had a hard time on hills with two people on board.
I am a big fan of your work, I am a two stroke enthusiast and a user, I am using CZ 250, based model. Like the scarcity of parts, lack of genuine engineering perspectives is lacking at where I am from, your videos have a lots of detail informations, rather than some typical restoration videos.

pistons in non Reed valve cylinder (TS 250 from your video showing non Reed valve cylinder from old model). Is it possible to cross fit pistons, like the many online seller's listing states. what are the pros and cons?

Thanks for the kind words my friend. Man, those CZs are hard to find parts for I bet. They were sure fast bikes in the day though. You know I really don't have much experience with the reed valve Suzuki's. I have a RM250 that I am working on and owned a RM400 back in the day. I have a TS250 guess I could see if the RM 250 piston has the same pin size and head clearance. I do a lot of messing around with pistons on older bikes but never have on the later Suzuki's. I will see if they look like they will work. The TS 250 pistons are still available, just bought one for the TS250 I just finished up.

If you floor that 250 what do you get out of her? 60 mph?
The most I had it up to was 55mph, it had a lot left, just not comfortable revving it out until its broke in. The spec sheet of the day said they would go 75mph.
I have the same color bike except 74 it runs and drives needs totally redone. How much can you rebuild the whole bike for?
This is a very nice machine. I really enjoy riding it. I no longer do full restorations, just more than I want to get involved in anymore. Sorry.

Hey Shaun, Ebay is probably where I find most used, and some new parts no longer offered by the OEM. New parts I source from Rocky Mountain ATV/MC, some used parts I get from my local motorcycle salvage, Bike boneyard, she does mail order, so look both up online and give them a call.

that bike seems like it has plenty of power, do you have helmet laws out there? we used 2 have them but we got ours lifted here in 1985...
It's a great old bike, no we don't have a helmet law here, it hasn't been that long ago that we also had no speed limit. Now we do, however it is 80 mph. I have always worn a helmet, most of my riding was off road and racing. Just feel better with it, on the road too.
