Hi Katherine, I was studying for PLAB1 when I watched your video for the first time and I was imagining if I could be a gp trainee one day. However, today I am watching this video as a gp trainee who is going to start a training programme in February 2024. This is an emotional time for me. Thank you for this detailed video 🤍
This video is very well done, from start to finish!! The voice overs, b-roll, your views when you cycle, and how in depth you explained what you were doing in each moment, absolutely love! Would love to see more
Hi Katherine. Thanks for putting up this video, this is so informative and helpful. As a fellow gp trainee in Ireland I feel like I am watching myself through this video. I like the fact that you briefly addressed the common stereotypes about GPs. Most people think that GPs don't do anything just sending patients to A&E which is absolutely wrong. We are very busy dealing with issues that never make to the hospital. I am currently doing my first Gp rotation and I must say I struggled the first few weeks I started cos some of the cases I had I wasn't used to dealing with them in the hospital and so I wasn't sure how to manage them. Thankfully I had a good trainer who supported me all through and like you i find myself always studying, listening to podcasts or webinar even when I should be resting 😊 . Gp is very busy but so rewarding and I am so happy that I chose it.
I am a GP Trainer working in Tokyo, Japan. Thank you for your very nice VLOG. It was nice to know how GP Trainee lives in the UK under this pandemic. I hope your Trainee life goes well.
Hi very interesting video, I'm a third year gp trainee (non UK). It's nice to see the differences in your training as well as the similarities. Hope you make more videos in the future. All the best in your training!
Thank you for sharing! As someone trying to get into medicine, your insights are particularly helpful and inspiring! Thanks for explaining all the jargons! Hope you can make more simple vlogs like this! Best wishes
so nice to see the perspective of a GP trainee - I’m interested in pursuing GP in London, would love a video on how to secure a job in this location/your personal reasons for applying there 😄
There are lots of videos of same content but to be honest yours is a perfect! Especially those details which no other videos has. This simply made me see the actual scenario. Thank you so much! And would love a video regarding how to be a gp trainee in uk (for overseas). Also the pay scale and cost of living in uk (i am sure you will do it best even without telling)
This is such a well-made and clear video, thank you!! Would you be able to make a video on your favourite resources / revision techniques for clinical years at medical school or foundation training?
I really do envy you. I wish I had the requisite IQ to understand all the maths, biology and so forth required to even stand a chance of getting into medical school. Not to mention the huge responsibilities you have to shoulder in your line of work. In other words, I salute you!
Very well made and useful video! Could you make a video about learning resources such as textbooks you have used in your foundation year and GP training that you have found helpful?
Really enjoyed this video despite not wanting to be a doctor xD hope you are not too busy and that everything is going well for you. Looking forward to your next upload! :)
This is so helpful as I’m starting GP training in August, thanks so much!💓 would love to see videos about how to make the most of GP training, how you revised for the AKT etc
Please could you share about the step by step process and the pre-requisites of getting matched into GP training preferably in London (or across the Uk)
I’m currently doing a EPQ ( extended research project) about the effect on the aging population do you think gps wouldn’t mind getting a interview about it ?
Love love love this video! Please make more days in the life as a GP trainee 😁 or the application process or how you found F1/F2 and how to get the most out of them ☺️
Hi. I enjoyed your video. Can you possibly cover the topic on "stress management" in primary care. I believe there is for ever amount of demands in services in primary care. I believe so many GP are working under tremendous pressure. How so you cope/ manage the pressure? Thanks
Thank you for your sharing. I am going to work in one of the hospital in central london. I am not use with the congestion zone and transportation in London. Can you give me some advice or have a video regarding it? And what bike you are using? Any way that I can find a cheap good folding bike (for commute)… thanks in advance
Hello, i really want to become a doctor more specifically a GP, but having read articles form both the BMA and other news sources i keep hearing the same thing - that beards hinder the effectiveness of surgical masks and they must be shaved off. I keep my beard for religious reasons and i guess i was wondering if Doctors more specifically GPs can keep beards, my beard is about a hands length so yeah not those stubble beards but the more lengthy ones. Thank you for reading :) And also what about rotations in medical school so like how do different specialties treat beards like are surgeons expected to be clean shaven more than GPs. Thanks again
I felt the best preparation was my F2 GP placement. Lots of MSRA questions was GP orientated and common scenarios encountered in primary care. I also finished a couple of question banks (MCQBank and Passmedicine). I'm generally not great with SJT questions so I studied hard for the clinical part and it paid off! Apart from this, lots of luck and a good night sleep the day before.
Hi Katherine as a gp trainee do you get to see patients face to face , I thinking of becoming a gp I don’t won’t to be in a call centre all day. Also with the econsult are you typing in response to the patient queries?. Also what proportion of your consultations are face to face and online
All GP training schemes include a portion of hospital based training, which often includes A&E. Once qualified many GPs also work in A&E or urgent care!
@@xpingars I thought in the UK A/E is reserved for emergency medicine consultants, is this not the case? In spain (im a british jr dr here) we dont have an equivalent specialty to emergency medicine so a/e doctors here are either internists or gp, i want to move back there when i finish here and i would absolutely love to be able to combine both, and have the option to avoid hospital medicine entirely if i choose. Is this realistic as a GP in the UK? thanks so much
As a GP you can work as a GP in urgent care or negotiate a job with a A&E to work as a specialty A&E doctor - typically in minors which is bread and butter GP work. You can’t be an A&E consultant, for this you go through ACCS/A&E training. GP training now only has one year of hospital and two years in GP. Once you’re fully qualified as a GP you can do whatever you wish really! Most GPs do all their clinical work in GP surgery but you I’ve met GPs working in A&E, palliative care, community geriatrics, psychiatry, geriatrics as a GP or GP with special interest... Good luck with your journey!
I would like your opinion ...is it ok to do the training at the 40´s? I am moving to the UK and I would like to do it but I am afraid to be too old ...
I can’t answer this question for you, though you might find the tools in my medical specialty video useful to help work through your priorities and values at your current stage in life
Hi! This is a great video, very informative! However, I’d like to ask, how do you find the work life balance being a GP in training? I see that you are given time slots throughout your working day but do you spend a lot of your free time studying too? I ask because I am interested in medicine and I seek more of a work life balance that I lack in my current teaching role. Thank you! Hope to see more videos soon :)
Hy, did you ever found the question for your answer? I just started my 2 year internship in my country and after seeing how is the life of the residents i started thinking about getting extra time for me, family and friends, also i like to speak to the person and not just see him as an issue to fix.
Hi! GP training consists of a mix of hospital and GP placements. During the hospital placements you will be on the on call rota (long days, nights, weekends) so the work life balance is not as good as during GP (regular hours, weekends free). To be honest most of the learning is from seeing patients, debriefing with supervisors, reflecting and reading during the job. I don't spend a lot of my free time studying, though exams are coming up and that will change soon. The great thing about GP is once you've finished training, you have essentially complete flexibility as to how your working life looks like - many options to be a salaried, locum, partner, portfolio GP etc. That is not to say that it's easy - the current GP climate is tricky at the moment with high demand and low resources, so the days are tough. Hope this helps - good luck!
Once you finish your training and are fully qualified as a GP, this is very much possible. There are options to work as a locum GP or you could negotiate a part time salaried post. Portfolio GP is another option. There are lots of opportunities to do teaching, management, research, medical journalism, anything you want really! During GP training there are LTFT (less than full time) posts (e.g. if you choose to do 50% LTFT, your training will take 50% longer). P.S. Did this thought come from Ali Abdaal's recent video? :P
@@xpingars ahhh.. such a great information u gave me thankyou ♥️♥️♥️ by the way can we also become locum or portfolio , just after we have completed our mbbs+ housejob? P.s: hehe no this thought didn't come from ali abdaal's video 😂
