The original Game Boy Color screen isn't great. Funnyplaying has now released their IPS kit version 2, with way more features than I've seen in any Game Boy screen.

also, Q-tip + rubbing alcohol on the cartridge contacts is our recommended cleaning method!
Just a pencil eraser does wonders, most aren't dirty enough to NEED alchool
@@S_Tadz Hmm. Never heard of using a pencil eraser. I feel like that would leave a lot of residue behind.
@@mekaijohnson you clean it off with iso alcohol 90% after. First I swab it good with Iso, then use eraser but not from a pencil. Just a rectangle shaped pink or white eraser, then over with alcohol on a cotton swab again thoroughly to get the residue off.
Yeah these old games are soo easy to clean the contacts, dont blow in it and then put it in the console cause u are just gonna slowly ruin the contacts in the gameboy itself. Best method and ive done them all, is open up the game cartridge , take out the board, set it on a napkin , go buy some Brasso from home depot or any hardware fixer upper kinda store, use a qtip and clean the contacts with brasso (apply conservatively) then take a dry qtip and wipe off the brasso and buff it eith the qtip to get it off as much as possible, then take another qtip and use 90% or higher isopropyl alchohol, then one last qtip and dry rub it down again with the alcohol on it. Itd alot of q tips yes but that is the best way to fully clean and polish the contacts for maximum effectiveness. Never put dirty cartridges in your gameboy, as the dirt and oxidation from the carts will mess up the gameboy contacts.
@@siahfishin5295 Brasso is good as a last resort IMO, because it was metallics your really etching into the pins and as you said if you don't apply it conservatively or you do and really scrub it could take some of the contacts off. I use it if the pins are corroded beyond hell.

Now all y'gotta do is solder new batteries in to all those GBC cartridges becauses it's been 20+ years 😂 every day it gets harder to be a physical/non emulation guy
There's a hole in the wall game store out here in San Diego that does exactly this and charges an almost fair amount for an upgraded refurb slice of nostalgia
You can tape the batteries in. That's what I did for Pokemon Emerald
I managed to get a gbc for like £30($41) on ebay and I've bought a new shell and ips display, probably all in I've spent just a touch over £100($136) including postage
You can put in battery holders. There's a flex PCB for CR2025 cartridges as well so you can solder a holder on them. It makes them very easy to replace in the future especially for the Pokémon Gen 2 games, which use battery power really quickly thanks to powering both the save chip AND the real time clock.

You said there aren't a lot of great games on Game Boy, but there really are. Donkey Kong 94, Final Fantasy Adventure, TLoZ Link's Awakening, Mole Mania, Super Mario Land 2, and Pokemon Red and Blue were my favorites growing up. They're definitely still worth playing today.

@@Jacob-zv7xw You can get a Revo K101 for less than half the price of a modded GBA. And it comes already bundled with a flash card, so you can play both original and Jack Sparrow games ;)
As far as clone consoles go, it's a very solid one, and it's already backlit + rechargeable but with the original Advance form factor.
probably the most intricate screen mod ive seen for the GBC. I guess a rechargeable battery mod would be necessary to keep up with how much power it uses haha.
2 AAs work perfectly fine. I've done the mod to a few and honestly I like rechargeable AA over the rechargeable mod. It's easier to replace the AAs

I remember this epic ice storm in Rochester in 1991. Power was out for days and all of our neighbors would gather together at night. All of us kids had the OG game boy and we crowded around a candle flame to play them haha. Good times.

4K videos look sooooo much better than most other channels. I think a few content creators either "upscale" to 4k, or the equipment blows, or they use a softening filter, idk what their problem is...but your video quality is on point!

I'm 34, the GB Pocket was my first GB. I remember when the GBC was BRAND NEW and how badly I wanted one. I haven't thought about actually playing any GB games in over a decade but I want one of these so bad now

I just scored two Game Boy Colors for $40 untested. Turns out both work. One was missing all the screws and the speaker and was heavily dirty (I did not know it was grape until I opened it... ). It looked black. The Teal one has a lot of melted parts on the shell and a ton of scratches. Also, the Start and Select words are almost completely worn down. I picked up a new shell and IPS screen for the teal one and a new regular grape shell and speaker for the other one. Keeping one as original as possible and making the other into an IPS show piece. Love your channel!

0:27 I was literally just recalling being about four to five years old playing Mario kart super circuit (barely) by the light of passing street lamps. The screen was only visible maybe one out of every five seconds. I wasn't allowed to have the interior lights on while we were driving of course.

When I was a kid in the 90s I had a Gameboy Color, it was my first console. I recently got a RG351V to scratch my nostalgia itch and have thoroughly enjoyed it's IPS display compared to my old Gameboy.

Seeing the GameBoy Color again gives me such deep nostalgia, especially paired with Pokemon blue. Easily one of the best consoles I've ever owned, along with all the other Nintendo handhelds.
My favorite modded Gameboy is with the OG Gameboy Advance: IPS V2 with a new glass screen, louder amplifier, and a rechargeable battery. I've always liked the look and feel of the original Gameboy Advance, but its screen sucks for actually playing it nowadays. These mods breathe fresh life into it :)
This is great for the nostalgia but I would recommend getting the RG351V. It gives the added ability to play various systems(including ps1) and retains the vertical form factor. Plus is like half the price.

@@AndreaFromTokyo That can work but usually with Bluetooth controllers there is some input lag. A good USB-C controller will work better. The gamesir one looks promising.
@@drew7324 Definitely the type-c option is solid but saying the same old bullshit about input lag makes me sick everytime, i have one of the cheapest ipega btt controllers and a poco x3 pro, no inputlag what so ever (at least not noticeable).

Two of my screens had some "defective" pixels in the corner. Moving the screen basically helps it with those kinds of defects
I just did this very same mod to my OG purple gameboy color ! Though i added a new speaker , amplifier, and “power regulator” plus new funny playing clear green shell and white glass + white buttons it looks PERFECT! The only thing I could not really get the touch sensor to work.. and it was my first soldering job ever .. took me many hours but the thing looks absolutely GORGEOUS

You can get an aftermarket logic board for the DMG that gives you color. You have to transplant a CGB CPU from an old color gameboy since that's a custom chip but afterwards you have color on a DMG.
how in the world did they not just name it "The GBC LCD"
I agree that the name isn’t the best but there are SO many different IPS screens (and a few TFT) out there for the gameboy color that it needs a bit more info than GBC LCD.
These mods were addictive for me. so much fun, such great results! By the way I do have an ips kit in my DMG. It had an amazing pixel mode, and I prefer that firm factor over the GBC, but I can't argue that the GBC has more games. GBAs are the ones I can't stop modding now, super fun to work on those.
