When I was like, 17, I was at a local card shop doing a tournament when a clearly autistic 13 or 14 year old is brought in by his mom who clearly doesn’t want to be here. She’s constantly remarking on how expensive all the singles are, and balking at the $3-$4 packs. The kid begs and begs and begs, and his mom eventually gets him a bullshit starter deck from like 4 years prior that the owner had on discount. The kids uses his OWN MONEY to enter the tournament with everyone, and got paired up with me first. He was so happy looking the entire time when he went first to normal summon a 1600ATK vanilla and end his turn. I felt so bad, man.
I had this happen but with the machina structure. When machinas were good, but yk just one structure and that's it. I got steamrolled and never played again irl 💀
I had a locals where this kid ran a toy soldier deck. The whole deck was legit 40 toy soldiers, normal summon, effect, special summon all toy soldiers in hand.
I have this friend who is realtively new to the game and he beuilt a branded chimera deck. First time to play it was against a kid who played 3 dark wolrd SD with some cheap additions and no mat. He wins game one, he lost game two so the they go into game three where he goes first and goes through a standard combo line ending on a mirrorjade and some stuff but he forgets to sent to GY an opponent's card during the endphase with king of phantom beasts. The kid draws for turn and goes "I have exodia" revealing the five pieces in his hand.
my favorite "little kid" moment I had was this 12 year old who would show up every weekend to hang around the shop. He came to me while waiting for sign ups to end and demanded to duel me. I said sure, having nothing better to do. This kid pulls out his "decl" which is like 100 plus cards in a ziploc bag. Half of them are sleeved but no 2 sleeves match. The kid takes like 30 cards off the top and set them aside as the "extra deck' and says hes ready. I let him go first and he starts with 2 pendulum scales. He then declares "a pendulum summon!" and just starts dumping extra deck monsters onto the field, synchros, fusions, xyz, ect... Now i dont really care if little kids bend the rules, but i figured i should at least try to point him in the right direction. so i said "ya know thats not how pendulum summoning works" he looks at me and with the utmost seriousness says back "No you can pendulum summon from the extra deck, DUH!" still cracks me up to this day.
There was a 10yo at my locals who whopped my ass every time with dinosaurs. He even had a duelist kingdom jacket with the star chip cuffs. Absolute chad

I tribute over it with a gamecal and instantly get into a full 15 min judge call over the fact that effect immunity does not stop you from being kaijued
Heres my locals story that happened to me circa 2012-2013. I was just getting back into YGO (as a literal child) when XYZ were introduced in Generation Force. I managed to scrape together a lackluster yet competition worthy T.G. Syncro deck. That and Frog Monarchs too because i loved the idea of Treeborn Frog so much. At my locals during a Pack Release I got paired up with a friend of mine who only ran Empty Jar. And I knew that. So without telling him, I side decked Neko Mane King as a counter to his strategy. We eventually got paired up against each other Semis in Losers and he pulled off his wombo combo, Morphing Jar into Book of Taiyou and whatnot. Magical Excavation Stone Book of Eclipse etc. Etc. He eventually uses Shallow Grave at a point where ive milled so much he doesnt notice it. He sets Cyber Jar I set to my field Neko Mane King face down. They use Taiyou to flip Jar. Neko Mane King is sent from Field to GY due to an opponents effect and switches it to end phase after C.Jar resolves. Eclipse triggers My T.G.s trigger He scoops after i drop Wonder Magician. He actively refused to play me afterwards and became less of a friend afterwards. What a wuss lmao
We used to have a kid at our locals who would stack his deck before "shuffling" it so he had everything he needed to go into Five-Headed Dragon on his first turn. We weren't as into pro level play back then so it wasn't uncommon for people to just pass on cutting. He was the only person who we 100% would cut the deck for, and every time, he just let out this big frustrated sigh when we did. He finally had a small confrontation with someone who called him on the stacking, and he never came back after that.
I think Coder has told this story like 2 times before, once in a subathon and the other in someone else's stream. The secondhand awkwardness of part 3 still hits as hard as the first time.

And I stop and look, because I don’t have the heart to tell this little card that card is banned. So I just let it resolve, then he says go ahead. I proceed with the duel and eventually win both games, but after I play him, I ask “hey, can I see your deck?” He offers it to me and I look at it. Not only was it an illegal deck, it was a combination of banned cards with commons from Dimension Force. Not even like… ones that make sense. His main deck had the Symphonic Warrior synchro pendulum monster among other things. I didn’t know what to say, so I walked up to the people at the store and said “hey can you check this kid’s deck and talk to their dad?” I don’t know what happened or what they talked about, but after round 2 the dad left with his kids.
I remember like the first time I ever took part in my Yu-Gi-Oh locals, I had just about cobbled together a deck with the cards I had from various boosters, SDs, and sets I had bought, and I was really excited and nervous to take part. During my second ever game there my opponent was whooping my ass, and at the start of one of his turns he Cosmic Cycloned one of my backrow, which was a set Red Reboot, and we had this very awkward moment where he was like "...dude that card is banned" and I just died inside & didn't go back there for like a month 😭

(literally just a game with pirates, similar to that Worms video game, you each have a team of pirates and fight each other til last pirate standing.)

Normal summon Dark Rebellion XYZ Dragon rings to a similar story I had at locals. it was the early Synchro era ish. Our local game story had yugioh as a side product, owner and staff were not well versed at all in the rules or goings of the game, but suplied everything we needed for getting a small tournement started like mats sleeves and even rental decks for newbies who just strolled in while the thing was running to jump in. Problem all mats were from the pre synchro era stating Fusiondeck instead of Extradeck zones, none had a rule book on hand to correct them with proof their obsolence, which in turn made em put all synchros in the main deck in the rentals and when a judge call was made about a synchro summon from the extradeck it was froced to be put in the main deck. All synchros without the must be specialsummond by synchro first were tribute summonable, armory arm was a great normalsummon. After a few days they read up on rulings, but kept this "flawed" format as a side event. Balancing all non fusions by "you have to draw them" balanced some heinous extradeck spam over the years in this format (except for actual fusion decks which were top tier). on the otherhand, I got a lot of mileage out of my ghost rare "Dragon Knight Draco-Equiste" dumping big synchro dragons with neat effects from the main deck and copying their effects has some merit after all.
I had one opponent play a proxy magic cylinder. he said he had one in a different language at home. I still won but I said "I believe you, you can still use it and if anyone questions magic cylinder, somehow, just have a translation ready.
I have one step worse about a proxied magic cylinder, which is that the guy had an unmarked proxy card that he flipped mid game and just claimed it was a magic cylinder when I was attacking for game. It was literally a card in a sleeve with a blank piece of paper glued to the front. Suffice to say, the judge agreed with me on that one.
heres my locals story: First time i went to my current locals was 2009 (i was 14 at the time) for the Ancient Prophecy Sneak (just like the set i too am ancient). I opened my first Turbo Pack 1, and i pulled a Rare Crush Card. now i didnt know shit about the meta game tbh but i knew Crush Card was BUSTED. I go to the vendors at my locals (i go to Brothers Grim out in NY, so we had as our vendors at the time: SJC Boston 2006 Champion Bobby Chambers, SJC Philly 2007 and later YCS San Jose 2015 Champion Jessy Samek, and this other dude Karl Arbiter) and so i was like "hey i know Crush Card is a good card, whats it worth?" and they go "sorry kid, but it just got banned on the September list" (back when lists came out at regular intervals and there wasnt any "WHERES THE LIST?!" spam on Konami's posts). So unfortunately, i never got to know the power that was Pre-Errata Crush Card.
Have something small from school, was a few years ago... Don't know what Player A played, but Player B had Cyber Dragons: A controlled 1 monster, B normal summoned a monster and then he tried to special summon Cyber Dragon from his hand, because instead of "if only your opponent controls a monster", he read "if your opponent controls only 1 monster"! Dude, wtf, read your own cards properly!
My locals story. This was years ago and I had recently started going to locals. My opening hand just made stardust dragon. Kid summons Winged Dragon of Ra. I proceeded to make black rose on my next turn. Nuked the board. Then normal summoned jet synchron and attacked for game because he paid all his Lifepoints for Ra.
My favorite locals story from Coder is the one where he was facing a dino player who summoned that one level 8 fire monster, then used pill to summon Dogoran. He then picked up the kaiju, picked up the level 8 fire synchro, which happens to be a tuner and then *smashes hands together* SUMMON BISHBAALKIN!!!!!!! Then he made the rank 5, the Machu Mech, swapped Bishbaalkin to Coder, detached from Machu Mech and burned Coder for 8000 FTK Coder's dead.
I swear Coder told that story before but instead of the poly part, he said the guy activated trunade and when Coder said that's banned the guy said "house rules" and still lost to Coder with banned cards and cheating 💀
This past weekend when I went to locals, a dude was very clearly new and/or coming back to the game and he was playing Obelisk turbo. He didn't really understand any of the rules and believed he could summon Obelisk the Tormentor **from the extra deck**
Best story i have from my locals was the time this guy in his late 20s came into my locals to play paper for the first time since 2014. He had a vague understanding of the link summoning mechanic but he never played even remotely competitively. He legit didn't know yugioh had a banlist so he came in with cards like agarpain, elpy, 3 of each dragon ruler and 3 maxx c and was like oh yea i'm surprised no one else thought of this. I was not his opponent at the time but my friend was and he had to explain to him what the banlist was and he legit left the store after my friend told him.
Back in 2012 IIRC, I went to locals (I'd assume is literally just a Certified Game shop, otherwise it wasn't locals.) with a Red-Eyes deck. I was not only told that Aroma couldn't play, but Red Eyes wasn't allowed either. Yet, for no reason, Monarchs were allowed. I assumed they didn't allow them, because they'd be easily beaten, but I didn't care, I still don't care. I use what I use, win or lose. During the Semi finals, Which I was placed in, Miraculously. I asked if I can use my Red Eyes deck if my opponent agreed. He literally laughed it off, knew I would lose, and proceeded to Missplay, 3 times. As I wonder the match, the Tournament Host, decided to literally disqualify me, solely because my Local duelists were braindead pilots and didn't even understand what an Extender was. Aka, he disqualified me, even thought I asked him, 2 staff, 2 judges, and my opponent if it was fine. They disqualified me for sharking, and using a prohibited deck. Ever since, i never went to another Sanctioned or Non-Sanctioned tournament, and my cards are never used anymore.

There was a time, when I brought traptrix to local. Match one was against a kid who played branded. Throughout the match, I managed to miscalculate basic addition, eat lava golemn twice, explain why it is very difficult for my deck to out dragoon, and lost 2 games in a row. Despite being a minor at the time of the match, I naturally look old, so to eveyone else it would have looked like a grown up adult with traptrix getting their ass beaten by a middleschool kid. It is the single most embarassing match I've had in my life, so far.
We've heard this story from coder before. He goes to his house and he just plays more illegal shit and stuff. Even the whole NS dark rebellion thing as well.
You know what would be a plot twist? If that "Illegal Plays" guy Coder met 3 times learned how to play, years after he downloaded Master Duel, made a deck, and met DistantCoder in ranked and started to use Dinosaurs to summon a weird white card with no level.
I remember once there were two guys, one on (idk something like TD maybe?) And the other was on blackwing, who didn't know how the deck really worked, so guy 1 was calling him out for his misplays and guy 2 STOOD UP, SHOUTED AT GUY 2, and they nearly had a FISTFIGHT DURING THE ROUND. guy 1 was at least trying to be like "let's take this outside" and guy 2 was like "nah, I'll beat your ass here!" Needless to say, they were both kicked out... so that was funny.
Boy do I have a story for you guys about the last time I went to locals, back in 2019 I was cheated because the judge and my third opponent were friends. I haven't competed in a local since that day..
Scientist On A Bike reminds me of the few glorious months where the worst auto-correct on Earth gave Magic: the Gathering the meme that was Comortikon. Also, back when WizKids was still a company, my LGS got big into HaloClix for the few weeks that it was supported. The son of our tournament judge, who played HeroClix on a competitive level, had literally no luck at this game (for which he was extremely excited, being a huge Halo fanboy and all). During one of the last official tournaments for HaloClix, he got so salty about constantly getting beaten that he started throwing his figures across the store when they would get eliminated; because there was a mechanic that let you respawn defeated characters, his dad started joking about giving him a DQ for stalling when he had to go pick up his pieces to keep playing.
I think my funniest locals story is when I was playing Ninjas and my friend said "I'm sorry I have to do this" and activated Red Reboot and I just looked at him. Like, this guy is someone who's in the loop. I said like, bro that card is fucking banned and memories rushed him. It was so funny. Ever since everytime a banlist comes out I just send him a screenshot of Red Reboot on the banlist going " YOOOOOO THEY FİNALLY BANNED RED REBOOT"
The bst one I've got: The only girl at our locals was a good friend of mine and she played Madolche at the time this happened. She got paired against a grown adult, he was the dad of another one of the early-20s players there, I'd guess he was about in his 50s. My friend beat him so badly in round 1 with Madolches that he dropped from the event and spent the remaining two rounds sat in his car waiting for his son to finish because he was so upset he lost that badly to the only girl in the event.
@ my edison locals, I play against a lightsworn player & he tries to summon raiden. i tell him no & he sets it aside. a few turns later he has drawn the 2nd & 3rd copies & takes them out as they come... i heard from other players that he also had 3 trunades & was running triple starlight road in his lightsworn. next week he uses a borrowed machina deck. he didn't know that fortress can count its own level so it takes him forever to bring them out. he sits on a giant trag & remarks that he's scared of my set monsters & that game takes 25min. the set is a draw because i didn't have enough time to kill him game 3. he's a nice guy but is pretty dense with his game manners.

I went to a locals playing pure eldlich and i lost die roll. Opponent goes first and sets 4 cards. I destroy one using golden lords in hand effect. I use his grave effect to special summon only to get stalled out for the next 3 turns as the other 3 cards set were negate attack😂
I uh… play melffy, which I was known for… until some asshole started bragging and sexually harassing my girlfriend… So I pulled out runick stun. He got so pissed he tried to fight me… owner tells us to take us outside. Fun fact, 12 years of boxing vs someone who’s pissed off with no experience doesn’t end well for the guy with no experience. The owner (who I know very well now) gave me a Japanese Melffy Wally that he had. And I wear it on a necklace whenever I go back there! And the other guy got arrested for assault and possession of drugs.

First locals i went to. I was always playing with people casually at high school, so some rulings i didnt know about. Im at my first locals and im playing dragon beatdown, a modification of disaster without disaster dragon lol. I make it to finals somehow and the game is close. 1-1. All important game 3 and all eyes on us. There was like 16 ppl backseating. My dragons vs the others guys monarch deck. Im literally about to win. I got darkness metal and blue eyes on field. Hes only got 2 sets. I have mst in hand. I dont think, the pressure is on and i just run straight to BP. Double d prison and i go "oh MST?" And everybody just wild. It was the meme in action, MST negate. I ended up losing. Was rough

I remember like the first time I ever took part in my Yu-Gi-Oh locals, I had just about cobbled together a deck with the cards I had from various boosters, SDs, and sets I had bought, and I was really excited and nervous to take part.
During my second ever game there my opponent was whooping my ass, and at the start of one of his turns he Cosmic Cycloned one of my backrow, which was a set Red Reboot, and we had this very awkward moment where he was like "...dude that card is banned" and I just died inside & didn't go back there for like a month 😭

Normal summon Dark Rebellion XYZ Dragon rings to a similar story I had at locals. it was the early Synchro era ish. Our local game story had yugioh as a side product, owner and staff were not well versed at all in the rules or goings of the game, but suplied everything we needed for getting a small tournement started like mats sleeves and even rental decks for newbies who just strolled in while the thing was running to jump in.
Problem all mats were from the pre synchro era stating Fusiondeck instead of Extradeck zones, none had a rule book on hand to correct them with proof their obsolence, which in turn made em put all synchros in the main deck in the rentals and when a judge call was made about a synchro summon from the extradeck it was froced to be put in the main deck. All synchros without the must be specialsummond by synchro first were tribute summonable, armory arm was a great normalsummon.
After a few days they read up on rulings, but kept this "flawed" format as a side event. Balancing all non fusions by "you have to draw them" balanced some heinous extradeck spam over the years in this format (except for actual fusion decks which were top tier). on the otherhand, I got a lot of mileage out of my ghost rare "Dragon Knight Draco-Equiste" dumping big synchro dragons with neat effects from the main deck and copying their effects has some merit after all.
I had one opponent play a proxy magic cylinder. he said he had one in a different language at home. I still won but I said "I believe you, you can still use it and if anyone questions magic cylinder, somehow, just have a translation ready.
I have one step worse about a proxied magic cylinder, which is that the guy had an unmarked proxy card that he flipped mid game and just claimed it was a magic cylinder when I was attacking for game. It was literally a card in a sleeve with a blank piece of paper glued to the front. Suffice to say, the judge agreed with me on that one.

heres my locals story:
First time i went to my current locals was 2009 (i was 14 at the time) for the Ancient Prophecy Sneak (just like the set i too am ancient). I opened my first Turbo Pack 1, and i pulled a Rare Crush Card. now i didnt know shit about the meta game tbh but i knew Crush Card was BUSTED. I go to the vendors at my locals (i go to Brothers Grim out in NY, so we had as our vendors at the time: SJC Boston 2006 Champion Bobby Chambers, SJC Philly 2007 and later YCS San Jose 2015 Champion Jessy Samek, and this other dude Karl Arbiter) and so i was like "hey i know Crush Card is a good card, whats it worth?" and they go "sorry kid, but it just got banned on the September list" (back when lists came out at regular intervals and there wasnt any "WHERES THE LIST?!" spam on Konami's posts). So unfortunately, i never got to know the power that was Pre-Errata Crush Card.

A controlled 1 monster, B normal summoned a monster and then he tried to special summon Cyber Dragon from his hand, because instead of "if only your opponent controls a monster", he read "if your opponent controls only 1 monster"! Dude, wtf, read your own cards properly!
My locals story. This was years ago and I had recently started going to locals. My opening hand just made stardust dragon. Kid summons Winged Dragon of Ra. I proceeded to make black rose on my next turn. Nuked the board. Then normal summoned jet synchron and attacked for game because he paid all his Lifepoints for Ra.
My favorite locals story from Coder is the one where he was facing a dino player who summoned that one level 8 fire monster, then used pill to summon Dogoran. He then picked up the kaiju, picked up the level 8 fire synchro, which happens to be a tuner and then *smashes hands together* SUMMON BISHBAALKIN!!!!!!! Then he made the rank 5, the Machu Mech, swapped Bishbaalkin to Coder, detached from Machu Mech and burned Coder for 8000 FTK Coder's dead.
This is so good! I hope for more stories in the future
I swear Coder told that story before but instead of the poly part, he said the guy activated trunade and when Coder said that's banned the guy said "house rules" and still lost to Coder with banned cards and cheating 💀
This past weekend when I went to locals, a dude was very clearly new and/or coming back to the game and he was playing Obelisk turbo. He didn't really understand any of the rules and believed he could summon Obelisk the Tormentor **from the extra deck**

Best story i have from my locals was the time this guy in his late 20s came into my locals to play paper for the first time since 2014. He had a vague understanding of the link summoning mechanic but he never played even remotely competitively. He legit didn't know yugioh had a banlist so he came in with cards like agarpain, elpy, 3 of each dragon ruler and 3 maxx c and was like oh yea i'm surprised no one else thought of this. I was not his opponent at the time but my friend was and he had to explain to him what the banlist was and he legit left the store after my friend told him.

Back in 2012 IIRC, I went to locals (I'd assume is literally just a Certified Game shop, otherwise it wasn't locals.) with a Red-Eyes deck. I was not only told that Aroma couldn't play, but Red Eyes wasn't allowed either.
Yet, for no reason, Monarchs were allowed. I assumed they didn't allow them, because they'd be easily beaten, but I didn't care, I still don't care. I use what I use, win or lose.
During the Semi finals, Which I was placed in, Miraculously.
I asked if I can use my Red Eyes deck if my opponent agreed. He literally laughed it off, knew I would lose, and proceeded to Missplay, 3 times.
As I wonder the match, the Tournament Host, decided to literally disqualify me, solely because my Local duelists were braindead pilots and didn't even understand what an Extender was.
Aka, he disqualified me, even thought I asked him, 2 staff, 2 judges, and my opponent if it was fine.
They disqualified me for sharking, and using a prohibited deck.
Ever since, i never went to another Sanctioned or Non-Sanctioned tournament, and my cards are never used anymore.
I still don't get WHY were those decks forbidden. Was it an old format or did they make up some rules?

There was a time, when I brought traptrix to local. Match one was against a kid who played branded. Throughout the match, I managed to miscalculate basic addition, eat lava golemn twice, explain why it is very difficult for my deck to out dragoon, and lost 2 games in a row. Despite being a minor at the time of the match, I naturally look old, so to eveyone else it would have looked like a grown up adult with traptrix getting their ass beaten by a middleschool kid. It is the single most embarassing match I've had in my life, so far.
We've heard this story from coder before. He goes to his house and he just plays more illegal shit and stuff.

You know what would be a plot twist? If that "Illegal Plays" guy Coder met 3 times learned how to play, years after he downloaded Master Duel, made a deck, and met DistantCoder in ranked and started to use Dinosaurs to summon a weird white card with no level.

I remember once there were two guys, one on (idk something like TD maybe?) And the other was on blackwing, who didn't know how the deck really worked, so guy 1 was calling him out for his misplays and guy 2 STOOD UP, SHOUTED AT GUY 2, and they nearly had a FISTFIGHT DURING THE ROUND. guy 1 was at least trying to be like "let's take this outside" and guy 2 was like "nah, I'll beat your ass here!"
Needless to say, they were both kicked out... so that was funny.

Also, back when WizKids was still a company, my LGS got big into HaloClix for the few weeks that it was supported. The son of our tournament judge, who played HeroClix on a competitive level, had literally no luck at this game (for which he was extremely excited, being a huge Halo fanboy and all). During one of the last official tournaments for HaloClix, he got so salty about constantly getting beaten that he started throwing his figures across the store when they would get eliminated; because there was a mechanic that let you respawn defeated characters, his dad started joking about giving him a DQ for stalling when he had to go pick up his pieces to keep playing.

I think my funniest locals story is when I was playing Ninjas and my friend said "I'm sorry I have to do this" and activated Red Reboot and I just looked at him. Like, this guy is someone who's in the loop. I said like, bro that card is fucking banned and memories rushed him. It was so funny. Ever since everytime a banlist comes out I just send him a screenshot of Red Reboot on the banlist going " YOOOOOO THEY FİNALLY BANNED RED REBOOT"

The only girl at our locals was a good friend of mine and she played Madolche at the time this happened. She got paired against a grown adult, he was the dad of another one of the early-20s players there, I'd guess he was about in his 50s. My friend beat him so badly in round 1 with Madolches that he dropped from the event and spent the remaining two rounds sat in his car waiting for his son to finish because he was so upset he lost that badly to the only girl in the event.

@ my edison locals, I play against a lightsworn player & he tries to summon raiden. i tell him no & he sets it aside. a few turns later he has drawn the 2nd & 3rd copies & takes them out as they come... i heard from other players that he also had 3 trunades & was running triple starlight road in his lightsworn. next week he uses a borrowed machina deck. he didn't know that fortress can count its own level so it takes him forever to bring them out. he sits on a giant trag & remarks that he's scared of my set monsters & that game takes 25min. the set is a draw because i didn't have enough time to kill him game 3. he's a nice guy but is pretty dense with his game manners.

I went to a locals playing pure eldlich and i lost die roll. Opponent goes first and sets 4 cards. I destroy one using golden lords in hand effect. I use his grave effect to special summon only to get stalled out for the next 3 turns as the other 3 cards set were negate attack😂

I was always playing with people casually at high school, so some rulings i didnt know about.
Im at my first locals and im playing dragon beatdown, a modification of disaster without disaster dragon lol. I make it to finals somehow and the game is close. 1-1. All important game 3 and all eyes on us. There was like 16 ppl backseating. My dragons vs the others guys monarch deck. Im literally about to win. I got darkness metal and blue eyes on field. Hes only got 2 sets. I have mst in hand. I dont think, the pressure is on and i just run straight to BP. Double d prison and i go "oh MST?"
And everybody just wild. It was the meme in action, MST negate. I ended up losing. Was rough
