His parents passed away when he was really young. The song is dedicated to them. The incident that led to disqualifying him, was because he tends to be very emotional after his performance, and he asked not to be photographed right after. Some reporter/photographer did not respect his wish, and apparently Joost made some kind of threatening gesture. But he did not physically harm her.
wow getting disqualified because he was disrespected and attacked , he cant even defend himself how fair and nice ... but i guess from different point , show business is alot of attention , you want it or not... you need to stay professional and have some strategies or bodyguards if you cant handle it yourself , sad the first disqualification in almost 70 years ...

The Dance Break is a specific genre of Dutch Hard-core Techno called Gabber. It is also a huge sub culture.
The dance with leg kicks and stomping arms is called 'gabber', a subset of house/edm. Very popular in the nineties and almost Dutch tradition.
The livestream will be filled with people explaining Joost's story and the lyrics. Its a happy sounding song but it's bittersweet.
Gabber has its roots in Rave & techno, not house. And Edm is just a generic umbrella term for all dance types of music.

What was so major for me hearing this song and seeing the musicvidwo for the first time was that it made me feel like a european. For the first time in my life actually. might be hard for people outside of europe to see, but on this continent we dont really identify as europeans, we just identify with our own nations mostly. Who are just as bloody diverse as the eurovision entries, we are lutheran catholic ortodox muslim and atheists squeezed together on a relatively small landmass and for millennia weve been at war with one another, and still are…
but watching this music video i was reminded that we acctually have common reference points, small things, like the silly mullets, the dance music, eu-politicians (his corstume is actually a nod to eu flags and in the video he poses a politician wearing that costume) and we have eurovision. A weird-ass 70yo spectacle, not even a competition anymore, just one big party celebrating our diversity and unity. We are a big crazy family, as you have already pointed out, and listening to this song, shouting along ”HEY” in the chorus, i felt we were all in this together. I felt part of something bigger then my own country. It was major for me. I didnt realise i had such a big family, that my identity could grow so much from simply shouting ”hey”
Everywhere else it seems borders are being reinforced. But not in europe. Here we are open, or at least trying our best to be. Thats the goal. And im so happy to be part of that. Im so happy about this song contest. Through it we have gotten to know each other, in all other sport events we compete, but not here, not really, we cheer each other on. You cant vote for your own country, the rules are so darn loose, so its just up to every individual to choose whatever they like best. Its a popularity contest, a sport in being memorable, fun, unique or touch people on an emotional level, i. Love it. SO. Much. 😂❤

Forget any amount of points received in a competition or numbers of a song being streamed, I think what makes a song successful is if it can really make people feel or think. And Europapa did that.

No, That is not correct, He has written 75 entries for Sweden.
As to "how involved are the artists", this depends on the artist and the broadcaster. Some songs are completely written and composed by the artist themselves, other songs are written for someone and then there's also songs that are written for Eurovision. They are basically up for grabs to whoever wants them (and pays enough). In this particular case, Joost wrote the song himself and he had help to compose the music. There were very minor external influences, other than that. An interesting look at how songs can travel over years and borders was this year's song "Liar" by Cyprus. That song was originally in Russia's National final in 2022. However, Russia was excluded from Eurovision. In 2023 it was part of Greece's national selection, but it came second so it did not make the contest. In 2024 the song finally made it to the contest, but by this point 3 countries and 3 singers had used the song.

This song has a lot of layers, is first of all a love letter to europe and his parents who passed but also about the problems he faced being an orfant. It‘s about how he was left lonely in germany, seeking for psychological help, came to france and all he had was listening to stromae - „papa ou t‘es?“ (father where are you). How europe became his family since his father told him there are no more borders in europe. And all dressed up as a silly party song…

I think you guys came to some really good conlusions about Eurovision here in your discussion. The versatility that is allowed with the sometimes wildly different artists and performances really makes the show stand out from other musical shows and competitions. It's completely normal and usual for your personal favourite to be an upbeat party song and your runner-up to be a powerful ballad, or whatever other combination available. Both small and big artists, from various different countries can have their shot on the same stage in front of Europe and the whole world, too. The spirit and idea behind Eurovision are wonderful, but there need to be practical changes to the show for it not to become a puppet for political discourse and for it to be more fair (ie. Joost's disqualification under suspicious circumstances, Israel's participation and their sponsorship of the show and harassment of delegations etc.)
To be honest, the first time I heard this song, I wondered what the f Netherlands were doing and didn't like it.
Then it became this earworm.
By the time the competition came around, it was in my top 5. It had won me over and I thought it was just brilliant fun and loved how deep the layers run with what this song is actually all about and how beautifully emotional and genuine the ending is. Joost got me in the end!!
Then the disqualification; while none of us know exactly what happened at this point, it feels a tad unfair and I suspect many fans, like myself, were bitterly disappointed that Joost would not be in the grand finals.
I've seen Joost talking about doing Eurovision next year representing Belgium. I'd personally like to see that happen although this entry, when you pull apart all the layers, is extremely Dutch.
Oooh so much to address here! When it comes to the selection process, each country have their own participating broadcaster who either directly choose artists to represent their country (i.e. the Netherlands: Joost sent Avotros his music directly and advocated for himself on social media) or they have national selections (i.e. Finland has UMK with 7 artists competing each year, Sweden has gazillion artists performing at Melodifestivalen, Italy has San Remo Festival etc.). Every artist has their own story but a lot of countries still opt into writing camps and even someone like Joost wrote "Europapa" with ESC specifically in mind. Fun fact, so did Käärijä with "cha cha cha". I believe each broadcaster also hires creative teams who specifically help the artists with their image, staging once they've been selected to represent that country. Some countries have more money/budget than others and sometimes it is very obvious from staging etc.
Someone like Joost would have a very specific style and you can really see his artistry on stage with "Europapa". He literally had his best friends on stage with him (the bird man and the piano man!). Even the visuals are very typical of his style, just slightly more polished than he normally would be. He's also very dutch (definitely not Slovenian haha) and the whole story of "Europapa" is basically a story of an orphan with an EU citizenship traveling from one EU country to another, trying to find where he belongs. The reason why people resonated with this song so much was 1) this is the most pro-EU song to appear on ESC in years and it was done in such a catchy, super European yet Dutch way. 2) Joost's story is just so heartbreaking in general. He lost his dad when he was 12 and then his mum a year later. He really wears his heart on his sleeve and Eurovision was actually his childhood dream. He used to watch it with his parents and by going on Eurovision it was really him showing to his parents look how far I've come/I'm still standing.. only for it all to be taken away by a photographer complaining about a "threatening gesture" even though everyone was specifically instructed not to film him backstage after the performance. The issue was also that there were ongoing problems with other delegations and allegations of harrasment/secret filming by the Israeli legation so people were kinda outraged that Joost's punishment was really harsh yet the issue with Israeli delegation was never addressed. There was a lot of drama and inconsistency this year so emotions ran particularly high :( to sum up, EBU completely robbed a fan favourite, sensitive positive guy with a perfect Eurovision song, dedicated to his parents.

I can honestly see him coming back for 2025. Netherlands pay a lot to Eurovision and they was furious with what happened. The EBU need to offer them something.
As for writing songs he wrote it with his producer at home (Baby Lasagne also wrote, produced and mastered his song himself in his bedroom) Joost then used social media to hype up that the Netherlands should send him and he got the magic phone call. After Netherlands failed to qualify last year and seeing how well Kaarija did they wanted the same. Also they do have Eurovision writing camps where artists can come together to write with other creatives. They can then use it or give it to another artist.
With Switzerland this year - Nemo actually attended one thinking they wanted him to write but they wanted to give him a song
There was people angry with Windows 95 as some are the contest as a legitimate song contest whilst others just like a good party on a Saturday night.

The facts are way too complicated. Politics, war in Gaza, Israel, the social media age of journalism, no respect for people’s privacy, arrogance, bad management, it goes on and on. Investigations are underway. EBU will have to introduce changes in competition or countries will withdraw.

To keep it short: stick to facts. Joost was disqualified after he was accused of non violent assault. The case is still pending.
The judge really isn't going to look at the political landscape. Its a misdemeanour-not a revolutionary coup.😅

joost was disqualified after the semi-final due to an incident with a photographer who (allegedly) filmed him after the performance which he did not want as the ending is so emotional; the photographer (according to the dutch broadcaster) as well as other photographers were asked not to film him- someone did it anyway, and he got angry but not physical according to reports. a lot of people see the disqualification as a very extreme response, especially since this eurovision was so ripe with controversy with artists getting harrassed by other artist's teams and stuff which didn't get this kind of response.
also yes this song is big! it went to number one in a number of countries, topped spotify viral charts and was also super big on tiktok across europe. hes gotten such a large fanbase following this, which is great to see as someone who was a fan before :))
Since the trial is set for later this summer, it’s better to leave speculations as to what really happend for the moment. It’s obvious to anyone that his own delegation is to be concidered biased and not a reliable source.
And not under any circumstance can it be ok to attack a 19 year old girl physically and/or verbally because you had a bad day. He admitted himself that he aimed fistpunches at her hed. The police reports are all free to read at Malmö tingsrätt, anyone can contact them to see the papers.

Probably my favourite song of the last 10 years
Joost was disqualified because he lashed out when his boundaries were repeatedly ignored.
Joost isn't an aggressive person to begin with.
He is however on the spectrum and is diagnosed with PTSD.
He saw his father die of cancer at age 12 . His mother died within a year of cardiac arrest. Joost found her body.
He was an orphan at age 13.
Whenever he performs about his parents he relives the emotions.
It takes him some time to get out of that.

Because of all this, there was an agreement not to film him right after his performance.
This agreement was broken by the camera person. Several times.
He asked her to stop. She pursued.
He lashed out. The camera broke.
He shouldn't have lashed out. (Although understandable) She should've respected his boundaries.
The incident is still under investigation. He seems to be confident there will not be a lot of repercussions, because it was a minor incident. He can't really say much about it untill the judge in sweden has spoken.
His punishment was extra proportional allready.
We'll see how it will all work out.

The fact that the EBU pulled him from the stage before any investigation was done is downright disgusting, a prime example of being punished before convicted or even charged.
I had such a shit-eating grin on my face when the entire audience boo'ed the technical staff who had to announce it off the stage (though I do feel sorry for the poor guy; this wasn't his decision but he got chewed out for it), and even more so when the EBU chief appeared on camera; it really showed just how much Europe loved Joost and condemmed the chief for disqualifying him, makes my Dutch heart throb with the love of my fellow Europeans!

Most countries have a national competition first. For example, Sweden has Melodifestivalen, Serbia has Pesma za Evroviziju, etc. The broadcaster will post an open call and the artists from the country will apply with their original song. Then the national competition is held, whoever wins normally goes to Eurovision to represent the country. There are a few prominent songwriters that write songs for different countries but they don't choose the winner of the national competition.
I would actually suggest to also watch the video for this song, with the subtitles! It's at 44m views atm. It also has a lot of explanation in the comments about the song.
I think I haven't seen anyone else mention the fact that the big sponsor for Eurovision is an Israeli company, so they really do have a big input into what happens in the contest. Joost and other artists (including Bambie and Nemo) were clearly against israel participating, and that made them a target for the israeli team. They would take pictures and film them when, BY CONTRACT, they were NOT ALLOWED TO. The israeli team would post ig stories mocking them and being disrespectful (calling Bambie satanic, knowingly misgendering Nemo, and mocking Joost's parents' death). The people from the israeli broadcaster told people who to vote for based on the artists having shown support to israel or not, and they would also mock artists while performing, which, again, they could not do because it's on the contract. Breaking any of these rules would have led them to disqualification. So the artists complained to the EBU, and they did nothing. After semifinals 2 (which is where Joost, Nemo and israeli contestant participated) there was a press conference with the acts going through to the final, and when they asked the israeli contestant if she considered her being there was dangerous for the other contestants, one of her team told her she didn't have to answer if she didn't want to, and Joost "changelled" that by saying "why not?"(which was kind of fair since everyone else answered their q's), and this led to her having to answer. Next day, news about the "incident" came out, and they said they were investigating. Mind you, the supposed incident happened right after Joost's semifinal performance and the press conference, so all the timings are just suspicious. We don't even know the details of what happened, but AVROTROS said he didn't touch her. Supposedly, he raised his hand to move the camera away after having asked her multiple times to stop filming him because there was an agreement that he wouldn't be filmed after the performance because it was very emotional for him, and the person felt threatened by that. So, we're still very much in the dark about it. But the EBU clearly fckd up because they did nothing regarding the complaints about the israeli delegation, but they supposedly led a thorough investigation on the incident with Joost resulting in his disqualification. Joost was definitely the public's favourite, so I think he would have won (and I'm not saying Nemo isn't the rightful winner, but it was more about Europapa being a banger, yes, but also everyone already loving Joost). So yeah, that's what happened.
Last week the EBU, the ones who disqualified him, stated that Joost can participate next year!?!
There was a lot of controversy surrounding this year. The biggest boos were directed towards the EBU (European Broadcasting Union). There have been alot of complaints that have come to light since the end, but lots of rumours during, the competition.There have been many complaints concerning the Israeli deligation of intimidating behaviour and recording people without permission, from several delegations and fan media. The Netherlands disqualification seemed to be an over reaction however not all of the details have surfaced there's an on going police investigation, a man was accused by a production crew member of intimidating & threatening behaviour. The EBU seemed to ban flags from the arena which isn't usually behaviour, they stopped people taking in the EU & non-binary flags. Fans and delegation have been complaining of the EBU's double standards in general but it started with letting Israel participate when they banned Russia (slightly different circumstances, but I understand the anger), which also led to a lot of demonstrations outside the arena and meant Sweden had to increase security, Eden Golan was told to stay in her hotel for her safety and the production team tried to use anti-booing technology to drown out the boos from the audience during her performance, which didn't really work. The EBU also didn't handle the situations very well, slow and cryptic written statements.
Some countries host televised national finals to choose their entry. Other countries do internal selections. Where an appointed committee or expert panel selects either the song, or the artist(s), or both, without public vote.
Netherlands and Belgium have done internal selections for more than a decade, where artists enter with their own song and one of them gets chosen. Which has been a lot more successful than the National final method. While the National final method has worked really well for countries like Sweden and Italy
There are many professionals that dedicate their work for Eurovision entries, staging designers, head of delegations and writers. There are some bootcamps around Europe just to trainee writers, musicians and artists to create songs for national finals and Eurovision itself. Its a big market in Europe.
This actually would not have won, because Juries gave their scores based on the semifinal performance anyway, and they were not enough (under 60 points, but can't remember if it was 56 or 58). It doesn't matter, as Joost has a great career with broader audience now and also collaborating with Käärijä on a new song about to be released any day now.
Joost Klein was disqualified after his requests to not be filmed after his semi final were repeatedly violated. He made a lunge movement of defense towards the camera operator (the fact that it's a woman doesn't matter AT ALL other than to further slander Joost.) To this day, no charges have been laid against Joost. He was highly favoured to win, and extremely vocal against Israels participation (massive controversy for obvious reasons), which many believe was the reason he was disqualified for something so minor in the end.
It was bullshit. Eurovision was his dream. He was in fact robbed. Crowds now chant FUCK EBU at his shows, rightfully.

How to win :
By receiving the highest score of juries and televotes.
One rule : you can't vote for your own country as jury or televote.
Each country have a jury who will deliver 1 to 8, 10 and 12 points (even the countries who failed to qualify)
During the show, the televotes are counted. At the end of the televoting period, they are transformed into a set of points ( 1 to 8, 10 and 12) for each country (even the ones who failed to qualify).
Since 2023, online votes from viewers in non participating countries are aggregatted and awarded as one set of points.
The jury votes are announced, then they add the televotes. And the winner is...

Europapa is the most streamed song of Eurovision 2024 with double the streams the winning song has (almost 400 million now) - it outcharted the winning song world wide. and it's the most watched youtube video as well. this was all before the disqualification.
It's not a comical song tho. This is Happy Hardcore. Dutch culture in one song. The song would have easily won the public vote as it was such a huge hit already. In my country it was number 1 for 8 weeks in the singles charts.
8:30 this is such a great observation! some countries like sweden have really established links between their own singer and own producers. one well known producer is jimmy joker thörnfeldt who was credited on 5 of the 12 songs of the swedish national final this year and he's written songs for pitbull, nicole scherzinger, and jennifer lopez. some countries connect their own artists with foreign songwriters, like austria using a jimmy joker song this year with an artist who is a phenomenal dancer. at the same time, there are artists who produce and perform their own songs (like måneskin, joost, or marina satti who represented greece this year). to me, these artists seem to have the most post-eurovision success.
This years backstage drama could make a whole damn movie. It was an absolute mess. Beginning with the highly controversial participation of Israel in the contest, which was harshly criticized by Joost Klein and other performers. The harrassment of artists by the Israeli delegation, vice versa threats and insults against the Israeli singer for representing her government, the use of anti-booing techniques during performances (as far as I know, however, not proven) and an atmosphere in the audience and backstage that was as ugly and charged as rarely seen. And then, just a few hours before the final, Joost Klein, a crowd favorite, was disqualified. There was little communication about what was supposed to have happened. According to the EBU there was an incident involving Joost Klein and a camerawoman. Joost claimed that it was a reaction to him being filmed without consent and that he didn't touch her at all. The whole thing hit like a bombshell and since the public was kept in the dark, it was not surprising that chaos broke out from then on. Wild theories spread, most notably that the EBU wanted Joost Klein out of the competition because of his openly pro-Palestinian views and had framed him for something.
There were also serious accusations of fake votes.
Yeah, Politics really took over this year. The music was amazing, but other than that it really wasn't good. And we still don't have clarity about most incidents.
I think this is a good summary of the chaotic feeling around the contest this year. Most people who were just watching it live on tv for the night's entertainment, or american youtubers making reaction videos afterwards, won't understand how it really felt for eurovision fans on the day of the grand final with all this going on. Really felt like everything falling apart.

Honestly, I don't blame or judge her either. Especially since we still don't really know what exactly happened and it's possible she wasn't aware of the agreements made about filming.
However I do blame the EBU since they made those agreements, didn't follow through to protect Joost (and other artists as we later heard) and then went ahead and disqualify him before the investigation was completed. There were many many other solutions possible but probably they did this to camouflage the mistakes they made and thus making multiple people not feel safe. There were good reasons for those agreements, mental health and emotional safety is also important, at least in my opinion. So I just don't agree with you last sentence haha.
And, knowing Dutch culture, the Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS wouldn't have called the disqualification extreme and out of proportion if it was a fair ruling based on the evidence they had at that time. But honestly, good on you for mentioning this, I've noticed too many dutch people attacking the camera women instead of the EBU and that is definitely not fair.

Some artists make songs especially for Eurovision, some countries even do that kind of competition where they make a song and choose a performer (rarely) but usually artists apply and the jury and public do the selection.

I think it’s hard for people outside of Europe to understand why this was such a fan favorite, it’s just so purely Eurovision. There’s a lot of references about europe in the lyrics too. It was 100% written for the Eurovision. I do think he would have won if it wasn’t for the disqualification.

regarding to the ecosystem you guys talked about, some artists are approached to write and perform songs for eurovision and some do it at their own will. in certain countries, there are national finals and in others songs and artists are selected internally. joost klein submitted his song to the dutch broadcaster months before he was announced as their artist. there are countries that have eurovision songwriting camps too! nemo's song was written and produced by them at one of these camps. as long as the song is released the september after eurovision (so sept. 2024 for eurovision 2025) it can be a eurovision song :))

For the first time in a long while I had a hard time to excited about Eurovision this year. There was so much controversy with Israel before and during the event, comment sections spammed with opposite views - a “verbal war”, everything about the general national security situation in Sweden, and ultimately the disqualification of Joost.
I was really into this song before the show but was so disappointed about it all (the EBU, Joost, everything) that I didn’t listen to it afterwards at all. Seeing the performance now made me happy again.

I believe disqualifying the Netherlands is the game changer for Eurovision results. I don't think that Switzerland would win. Of course, the winning performance is very good, but everyone fell in love with this one.

Each delegation can stage the chosen song and artist the way they see fit with taking into account what budget they have. Often the artist has a big creative input but sometimes almost none. A lot of delegations hire experianced stage show experts like for example Sacha Jean-Baptiste is a very well known swedish expert on that field that staged the shows for a lot of different counties.
On May 10th the EBU stated that the Dutch delegation was not performing until further notice because of an incident with the Dutch performer which they needed to resolve. The Dutch broadcaster, AVROTROS, thought all was going to be sorted and he would perform based on how they left meetings at the end of May 10th. Around lunchtime on May 11th it was announced that the Netherlands was disqualified be Joost made "threatening behaviour directed at a female member of the production crew." They did not say anything further on the matter, but AVROTROS said stated what happened (thought that not everything can be currently released during a pending investigation) saying that it was agreed upon before that he would not be filmed coming of stage like the other artists (probably because the end of his song was very emotional or because his autism can make certain situations overwhelming), but that the woman filming all the artists filmed him anyways despite him asking not to be filmed repeatedly. That led him to make a threatening movement towards the camera, but he did not touch the woman. The incident was reported and this prompted a police investigation which is ongoing and will end up in court. AVROTROS is fully behind him and think the penalty was to heavy offering multiple solutions to resolve the matter which were all rejected. The EBU later updated there statement hinting that social media is not being truthful (possibly a jab a AVROTROS's social media posts explaining what happened). We now know he wouldn't have won because the juries voted on May 10th using his semi-final 2 performance and only gave hime 58 points (when score breakdowns were released on the website they only removed the Dutch points they didn't shift the other points up), but that he probably would have been in the top 10.
Overall it was handled terribly by the EBU allowing rumors about sexual and physical assault to swirl knowing full-well that didn't happen and being weirdly active on this when usually they hesitate to do anything drastic (i.e. they didn't want to ban Russia because they felt the broadcaster hadn't broken rules when the war first started, but a bunch of countries refused to partake if they didn't so they had to) We won't know everything until the investigation is concluded, but the footage of what happened exists definitely exists so we should get a pretty good idea once the investigation is over.

@@Andjelka99 Sort of. I was just using it as an example of in that instance they didn't want to ban at first, but only did when many countries including big financial contributors refused to partake. With Israel only some smaller financial contributors questioned the Israel's participation and at least one big financial contributor (Germany) refused to participate if Israel was not there. But mostly the example was to show that usually they're not quick to anything or don't do anything at all so this was a weird instance when they were so quick and harsh.

This can be done by internal selection or, more commonly, a national song contest where the public can vote (often together with a jury). The song entries for the national contest are just submissions from artists and bands. The disqualification was due to an incident between the artist and a camerawomen. The full details of the story aren’t known, but apparently the camerawoman filmed Joost Klein when she wasn’t allowed to, which caused him to hit the camera or something like that. During the final, an active police investigation into the incident was ongoing, which I would guess is the most likely reason for the DQ - whether Joost will be charged or not, I have an idea that being investigated by the police during the live shows is not allowed, thus disqualifying the contestant, which is unfortunate (especially because the song is great)

Hey! To answer your question about the artist/song selection. It’s different for each country’s broadcaster but you can generally put them into 2 categories: internal selection and national final. Internal selection is where the broadcaster picks the artist and/or song behind the scenes and national final is where a country holds its own song contest and the winner gets to go to eurovision. Every country does one of these 2 in its own way but they don’t differ too much.
The Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) started in 1956 and takes place every year since (except 2020 due to covid)
To take part, you need to win a national selection (as Samremo) or be selected by one of the participating broadcasters.
Rules : it had to be an original song, with a maximum of 3 minutes, performed live (except instruments and chorus), a maximum of 6 artists on stage. The broadcasters is free to decide the language in wich the act will be sing and no rules for the nationality of the contestants (Céline Dion represented Switzerland in 1988)
Most wins : Ireland and Sweden with 7 victories each.
The EU flag imagery on stage is fine since it's one of the flags that can fans can bring into the arena (tho weirdly during the final they turned people away that had them and the EU got pissed about it). The song itself I don't consider super political either lol.

This song is dedicated to Joost's late parents whom he lost when he was 10-12 years old. Eurovision was a big dream of his. Joost was already quite famous in Netherlands and Germany before this. Even though he's an artist he is also a human being who suffered a lot of trauma and mental illness - so after singing this song to his dead father at his big dream stage he got very emotional. He was aware that this would be the case himself and made a deal with the EBU to not be filmed right after his performance. A lady with a camera (who roumours sais is part of the Israeli deligation) did not respect this and after telling her to stop many times Joost made movement towards her camera to make her stop. And she Karened on him and made this huge allegation. There might be even more conspiracy-like things about why they wanted to get rid of him. The politics around this year's competiton with an Israeli company being the main sponsor has been awful.

Each public broadcaster who chooses or accepts to pay the entry fee can decide how ever they like to choose song. Most countries have a national competition; some run for months and are as big as Eurovision on a national level; others decide to choose internally from applications received from interested artists. There is no winning formula.
The EBU was very hush-hush about what happened exactly, it wasn't even known whether or not he will perform, his recorded semi-final performance will be shown to the jury, or he will be excluded altogether, almost until the last moment. All that was known was that he "threatened or assaulted" a "female staff member" (they made sure to emphasize the "female" part). After this, it came out that Joost and his delegation asked not to be filmed after coming off stage as it is a very emotional song for him, especially the ending (his parents died when he was a child and he has been battling the trauma from this ever since). Now there was a camerawoman/journalist/TikToker (we don't really know as far as I know) that kept filming people when they were coming off stage and filmed him, too. He asked her to stop, she didn't. Then, as far as we know, he pushed her camera and then she reported this to the EBU and to the police. This is the horrible, horrible deed that Joost did that got him disqualified. Mind you, the legal process is still ongoing and he has not been deemed guilty or innocent yet in front of the law - only the EBU jumped the gun. AvroTros (the Dutch broadcaster) has been considering pulling out of Eurovision altogether. Joost is, thankfully, fighting back and they actually involved further witnesses into the case and it is now international between Sweden an the Netherlands - this is the last information about this for now.
There are at least a few swedish songwriters who are approached by several countries to write songs for their entry. Sometimes the same songwriter has more than one song in the final.
Most countries have their own national selections. The rest usually pick the artist and then they with their team find a song. If you're interested in learning more about the process a lot of artists have uploaded their story on their UA-cam channel.
Answers to your ESC questions: The song selection process is very individual for each country/ national tv broadcaster. Some have a national final show (often complete festivals) to select an artist and song by televotes. Some send in the latest „the voice“ winner. Some TV-Station just select internally, who they send… Some organize a special song-writing camp, some chose from songs sent in, some buy a song (in sweden) and an artist to sing it. Some have test-audiences and marketing strategists and take it very serious. There are music producers who have specialized for Eurovision… There are Artist just living in the Eurovision bubble and returning several years or work as songwriters…. Some countries change their procedures every year… It‘s as chaotic and vonfusing as eurovision is visually… the finally chosen song has to be send to the EBU (the Organisation of Eurovision) by the end of March (i think) and greenlight for the contest.
Stage Production and Performace of the Song is up to every country, some hire professionals stage directors (There are spezialized ones for ESC, since it‘s one of the biggest stages), some hire someone from their country, some just a graphic designer or whatever 😂 - for example Finnland and Switzerland hired the same Stage Director, Benke (known for the risky stuff). Eurovision entries are like Olympic Teams, they come with a hole delegation of the best to make it the best… gold gets who stands out within 3 mins in a 4 hour tv show to a multicultural tv audience and professional jury.

In a press conference, the press tried to question the Israeli entry and she was told she didn't have to answer and Joost shouted: "Why not?" and many other entrants were not happy about their inclusion and the EBU being full of Israeli money and sponsors, to the point where they were paid to thrust Israeli flags at the cameras and silence boos with fake cheers.
The Israeli act, as well as her team, kept harassing others entrants and trying to get a reaction, all while mocking the other acts on their socials, openly. Lots of acts complained and refused to be around them but their teams and Israeli press kept bullying and provoking. Joost had already had the Israeli press mocking him over his parents' death but it was when he came off stage, after one performance, where he reacted, which led to his disqualification.
The writer of Israel's entry thrusted a camera in his face, trying to make him react, and he pushed the camera away and she claimed he assaulted her. He didn't and other sources backed this up but because of Israel's money and influence, he was disqualified.
When the president of the EBU was shown on screen, the audience booed him, because he was basically a Zionist donor puppet.

What was pretty funny was that when Israel was performing and when EBU came to stage to talk about why Joost was disqualified, all the people who was there were singing Europapa chorus and if you pay attention to what is happening around the stage when Israel or EBU is there it is funny to hear Europapa all the time. He was robbed, still number 1 spot on all Spotify charts!
This stage performance was a mess though

Though everyone claims it would have won, this is not the case. The Jury's slaughtered it as his voice was really not on par, as you can well hear. He would have won the Televote, but in the end Nemo would still have won, though with a much smaller margin from Croatia, like 4 to 16 points. Also he underwhelmed soo much as they promised something on stage that would surpass the moon landing, but the 1990's look and feel of camp was just like, MEH! they promised a lot but did not deliver. But the song itself is very, very good, even though I don't like it I can't get it out of my head since it came out.

As you can tell from the comments, There is a lot of emotions and personal opinions about this. There are two versions of what happened,
Joost Kleins version:
Joost says after his performance he was asking many times to not be filmed but when he was filmed anyway, he made a threatening gesture towards the photographer, but that he never touched anyone or anything. He also adds that he was promised earlier not to be filmed after his performance. This version is told by by Joost Kleins people and the Netherland delegation.
EBU version:
Joost has asked EBU/SVT not to be filmed after his performance, which was also respected, as you can see during the broadcast, all other acts are filmed when they leave the stage/says thank you, but not Joost, When Joost later came backstage there was a photographer who did not belong to SVT who produces the broadcast and who did not know his wishes. She has not understood that Joost does not want to be filmed but is threatened by Joost and has her camera smashed by him. Police are called and an investigation into illegal threats is started. The EBU decides that Joost should be disqualified as violence and threats are not accepted and as long as a police investigation is ongoing, he cannot be allowed to participate. This version is told by the EBU.
What the prosecutor has confirmed, Is that the camera is broken, there are several witnesses backing the EBU version, and a trail was set to take place in early June with "good evidence", but Joost Kleins lawyer demanded more people to be interrogated so the trail was postponed. As of today, there are still no date set for a trail. What version is the correct one and what really happened, We don't know. Hopefully the trail will get us some more information about what is true when all the interrogations and evidence become public.
