How important is research ? I keep getting mixed answers when it comes to that.

Great question! We may explore this in a dedicated post, but TL;DR it can be a huge help to your application if it reflects a clear commitment and passion. The boost provided by research also depends to some extent on specialty (it’s more expected for some than others) and the expectations of particular programs.
