Thank you so much! I replaced my outdoor light fixtures for the 1st time. I was tired of waiting for my sons and did it myself! I feel so accomplished!
That was smoother than flowing water. Thank you. This is actually on my honey-do-list. Going outside to change the lamps now. However, im turning off ALL the breakers as my breakers are partially labeled. 👍👍👍
Have you know. Recently purchased a house and we want to spice up the curb appeal. Bought new lights and almost called someone to install them. Decide to hop on UA-cam and found your video. Thanks to you I save myself some money lol. Appreciate you
Thank you so much. I am going to attempt this in our 25 plus years old house next week. I am very handy and changed outlets and switches inside the house myself but have not done driveway lights. Thanks for the great video !!
Just a note, Black wire is Hot not positive. Also you should twist your wires as the other ones before to put the twist one connector so they all stay together inside the box
As a kind reminder "positive for electric" is the actual term you would use in the rest of the world that speaks English as an additional language. That's why the content creators use Positive and Neutral and Ground as the actual terminology rather than layman slang. ❤
@@AmyC28713 hi Amy, thanks to be kind in your response. To be honest I dont see any situation where it could be named as positive. DC has positive, negative/ground. But for AC, since it is an alternate current, the positive and negative side change 60 times per seconds. We call it "LIVE" or "HOT", neutral and ground. But I can see that some could do the analogy to DC since, if the positive(dc) or live(ac), it is the one what will bring the circuit alive, its the dangerous one (in most cases). Cheers 🥂
Very simple clear instructions. I am a new homeowner female, I did it in 30 minutes 😊 Only thing missing was to turn off the house power. Thanks so much
Always use a little handheld tester to make sure your power is off. It looks like a pen or a marker. You hold it to the wires and press a button and if the wires are still hot it will beep nice and loud.
It is only used to check if the circuit is energized but not to check if the circuit is dead. For 100% safe isolation, you have to use a voltage indicator with a proving unit to ensure the potential difference across hot, neutral and ground are 0V. This why you almost never see a professional electrician carry a handheld tester.
You really NEED to check the wires are actually DEAD before going in and touching them even after popping the circuitbreaker. The number of electrocutions that occur because the wrong breaker was switched off or some wiring error that backfeeds Line (or Active or Phase) ... NEVER called POSITIVE (used to describe DC voltage) to the connection you are working on. This video kind of took a shortcut on safety! Another good practice is to put a temporary note tag on the breaker you have switched off so someone else doesn’t come by and reset it for whatever reason not knowing you’re working on mains electrics!
0:34 the video says the ensure the power is off. If you need a UA-cam video to explain that to you, then you shouldn't be working with electricity in the first place. Hire someone.. LOL
@@StoopSports still a good idea to measure or even use a chicken stick for any potential on the conductors you're going to handle even though you pulled the fuse, or popped the breaker at the fuse box and locked them out with a tag warning you are on the other end! Just good safe practice to get into really....
Awesome job a little reminder to those who opened the old light and was full of yellow jackets..dont jump off your porch screaming. Other than that tip Awesome vid
It's always good to mention turn off the power at the breaker box before physically touching any wires in your home, they could be hot. Have a great day.
Besides what others have said about using a non contact voltage tester, you should have connected the ground to the bracket. It was wrong in the old set up and now it'll be wrong for years to come.
Seen some negative comments. Thanks for the videos. Everyone that wants to know has got to learn somehow. I have learned so much about cars through UA-cam. And for you UA-cam haters! Why you even watching? Go do you and mind your own business.
You certainly can, and should, if it’s in an area that is exposed to the weather. I didn’t on this one because it’s on the porch and is well protected.
None of my exterior light fixtures currently have junction boxes, there’s just a wire sticking out of the side of the house underneath. Was that pretty common in the 70s?
My question is why are there 2 black wires and 2 white wires pre wired. Instead of just one black and one wire. Is the second pair of black/white wires in parallel connection to another fixture ?
So question... I have a red & black connected, & 2 whites connected on the current light. The new light has a black, white & green/yellow & tells me which is which as far as neutral, ground, live so is there some other way to hook up the wires? Should I just call an electrician?
So i have new sconces with that same bracket as opposed to the cross bracket that has the 2 set screws in the middle to set your level. I used this bracket you have here and the entire sconce just wanted to swivel and sway in the wind. How do you keep it level??
I have the exact white lamplight in your thumbnail, I would like to paint it black instead of changing it what kind of paint it right for that kind of material?
Yeah mine is not going smoothly. It is with the screws that the caps screw onto. The screw is too long and caps do not rest against the light, so it leans out
For whatever reason any dusk to dawn bulb in my outdoor fixture flickers. Normal bulbs do not flicker…. Not sure if it’s time for different bulbs or just replace an aging fixture
Okay, I'm going to have to call the pro, because I do not have a junction box on mine, just a black and a white wire, no grounds, but there is a red wire that I can see about a quarter inch deep in the wall.
The only problem with mine is that yhe screws that go into the box are horzantal and the the screws that stick out don’t let me because it’s in the way
Thank you so much! I replaced my outdoor light fixtures for the 1st time. I was tired of waiting for my sons and did it myself! I feel so accomplished!
Always use an electrical tester and confirm the wires are DEAD.
Thanks! I used this to replace some old outdoor lights this weekend. They look amazing and I didn't get electrocuted, which is a huge win.
Thank you, UA-cam Husband, for teaching me how to remove and update my outdoor light! You did a great job; therefore, so did I!

Should always use a tic tester or multi meter to test the hot. Never trust the switch in case of a 3 way or the wiring is messed up.
Exactly. I had a scare once before. It was a 3way
But if the breaker is shut off there shouldn't be any electricity running to it, no?
@@lancer717
I had a scare once in a three-way, but my wife and I got tested and luckily everything was good, good advice! 😊
@@mariebee3146 The breaker can be faulty or the circuit could be fed from another circuit because of dodgy wiring.
Or best use a voltage indicator with a proving unit, that's the only way to prove the circuit is 100% DEAD.

Please make a video on how to use various types of testers to check live wire. If it’s already there, please share the link

Thanks for this vid! I upgraded 4 outdoor light fixtures by myself in about an hour, without shocking myself! I'm becoming a pro at DIY!
Wow thank you for the thorough breakdown. You made this extremely easy by identifying all the parts
Thanks, this was well-explained and helpful. As a result, I was successful in changing out my old fixture to a new one.
Thank you so much. I'm scared of even a static shock but I believe I can do this with your instructions!
Thank you so much! Thabks to your video I did it by myself! Homeowner single mom over here in Puerto Rico! 💪🏼
Good video demonstrating how to get the work done. Thank you
Man that looked so incredibly easy 😮
Thank you this was very helpful . I installed both the fixtures with the help of my wife
Very easy to follow! You explain things in a very easy to understand way!
Good video but I would use a tester on the wires just double check that the wires are de-energized.

OK but what that initial light fade in transition was insanely smooth

Great video, great instruction...........I cannot get the the screws off the old current fixture.
Thank u. Can u turn it off as well using the smart bulb
Thanks man this video really helped.
great video, however, I need an extra outlet to send a wire to my garage. Any ideas?
Great content, I’ve been looking for a comprehensive guide to change my outdoor light fixture - found it here! ➕➕

Thanks for the video dude. I’m going to do mine soon.

Wow smooth transition in the beginning of the video from old fixture to new! Well done on your video editing skills man ;)

So, its not necessary to wrap the ground wire around the green grounding screw? I'm confused on this. Thanks.
What about the green ground screw? You have to wrap your ground around that

How come you didn’t use the ground screw on the bracket too?
