    Bought this on vinyl when it came out about the same time Steve Walsh of Kansas released his solo album Schemer Dreamer in 1979.

    Their sax player did the sax portion for Foreigner's Urgent.

    Cool to see this clip! I'm quite sure they were lip synching to the record (which means I was the guitarist you hear). But on camera was the original touring lineup of Tycoon, which means that two guys are on camera who are not mentioned in the paragraph above: John Putnam - Guitar, and Ray Agcaoili - Drums.

      Great to hear this after so many years. Brings back great memories. If you don't mind me asking. if you were the guitarist in the track why did they go with other guys?

      Hi Mimoocho:
      Thanks!
      I was the guitarist on the track as well as on the rest of the album, where I also had some writing credits.
      However, I was technically a sideman - hired help - not contractually a member of Tycoon. This is a situation that can sometimes lead to difficulties, even with the best of intentions on all sides. For a number of reasons not appropriate to discuss here, I did not subsequently tour with Tycoon. They ended up with John Putnam, a friend and an excellent guitarist, for their subsequent tour.
      It is also worth mentioning that my guitar parts on Such A Woman, notably the slide guitar on the intro, were largely derived from parts played on the original demo of the song by Dave Brown, who is perhaps best known as a long-time sideman of Billy Joel.
      So in this case my work on this song owes a debt of gratitude to Dave - who never appeared in any lineup of Tycoon.
      Funny how these things work.
      In case you're interested I worked extensively in the early 80's with Suzanne Vega. The solos on several of her singles: "Luka", "Marlene On The Wall", and "Left of Center", are by me and not derived from anybody else.
      Cheers,
      JG

      Good on ya. You're obviously a talent. You lived the "rock dream" !
      I loved Suzanne Vega too. "Small Blue Thing " and "Solitude Standing" still my favs today.

      Thanks for the kind words! I will say that while I have been blessed with some good opportunities and some solid successes, it's not the easiest way to make a living. For the very few who get to the top, it's a different world than for the musical foot soldiers, such as myself.
      But it's a special treat when people like you notice and respond to my work!

      Jon Gordon, I always wondered who played the masterful guitar on this track. My older brother bought this single in late '79--it was getting a significant amount of airplay from the New York FM rock stations. I nicked the single from him and still spin it to this day. Knowing the you also played the amazing licks on the Suzanne Vega tracks is icing on the cake for me. Wish I had tabs to the guitar work on "Such A Woman". Great licks for sure.

    Nationally, Tycoon was a one hit wonder. "Such A Woman," got airtime on radio stations. But they faded after the song was pulled from the playlist.

    Mark Rivera (Sax) was responsible for the great sax solo on Foreigner's song "Urgent" sorry that Norman passed away. We need some website that let's us know how our older rockers are doing. I understand that The Knack's lead singer Doug Fieger died a few years ago too.

    • @kcory1
      @kcory1 8 років тому +2

      That's incorrect, junior walker played sax on foreigner's urgent.

    • @jongordonmusic1
      @jongordonmusic1 8 років тому +1

      Yes - I know Mutt Lange made much use of Mark Rivera with the Foreigner record he produced. They had hit it off when working on Tycoon's first. But that was Junior Walker on "Urgent".
      Speaking of members of Foreigner, Ian McDonald has just come out with a new album with his new band "Honey West" (also the title of the record.) It's pretty brilliant! I played a very small role in engineering and programming for some of Ian's synth overdubs. Ian lives in NYC now, where he is a frequent presence in the late night music club scene.

    Credit where credit is due: the drummer in this video is Ray Ack not Mike Braun.

    • @jongordonmusic1
      @jongordonmusic1 8 років тому +1

      Correct. Drummer Mike Braun and guitarist Bobby Messano came on board for Tycoon's second album, "Turn Out The Lights" which was produced by Vini Poncia. I don't recall the name of the studio offhand but it was located in Manhattan's famous Brill Building, where all the great songwriters of a certain era congregated. Art Garfunkel was making a record down the hall.

    • @jongordonmusic1
      @jongordonmusic1 8 років тому

      And yes, the lineup of the band in that video is: John Putnam, guitar, Mark Kreider, bass, Ray Agcaoili, drums, Mark Rivera, sax, vocals, percussion, Norman Mershon, lead vocals, and probably Michael Fonfara, keyboards, although it's hard to get a glimpse of him. The late Richard Steinberg played on the first record, but like me, never toured with the band.
