Tears at the very first line. This is what I reach to be when I become a mom one day. My mom tried her best when she was younger but took out her anger on me and it just got worse throughout the years. I'm 13 years old and I'm gonna stop the cycle that my moms moms moms mom created and I'm gonna be there whenever my kid is drowning in a sea of lies and heartbreak.
I had first seen Sarah Kay on TED and was hooked with the same poem, but different title. Its called "If I should have a daughter". I wish, Sarah Kay would perform at the Bowery Poetry Club again. How the ocean refuses to never stop kissing the shoreline no matter how many times it's sent away that is beautiful. I also wish Sarah Kay would have more of her amazing spoken word poetry either on UA-cam or at some kind of poetry or literature conference, because she is phenomenal.
@Ficklepickle909 Actually the title is "B" as in "point B". After it was used in the TED talks, they attached "If I should have a daughter" because it starts out that way. Thanks.
'Always apologize when you've done something wrong, but don't you ever apologize for the way your eyes refuse to stop shining. Your voice is small, but don't you ever stop singing.' Beautiful.
Reminds me of "Who's on First" where the name of the outfielder has several variations from "I don't give a damn" to "I don't care" depending on the perceived sensibilities of the audience lol.
+PluviophileInMe YES. Her body language and the way she delivers it seem so much natural, and here, it's like she's just reciting, not telling a story, just... reciting. even though she probably wasn't,. it just came out that way.
I love this poem! It gave me chills because I could really feel it..... I remember when I first saw her on Def Poetry Jam and she is still wonderful and so talented!!!
That would be fantastic because I do live in California. I have shown her videos to a couple of my friends and we all love her. Thank you so much for the info.
Sarah is currently in Prague. She will be performing in California, I think in January. If you are on that side of the country, I can let you know the dates when they are set.
That "UH" at the end has me laughing. I've watched this poem so many times since my freshman year haha. She's so talented and has inspired me to write my own spoken word and perform it in my theater arts class (: I'm only in 10th grade and I hope to be as good as her one day (:
Beautiful... As well as the poem. Haha. I really don't know what to think of this. I've never seen nor heard anything like this before. Spoken word poetry. Why, haven't i discovered this sooner? Or at least Sarah Kay? Well, i know one thing for sure; she can paint a better picture than most artists out there. You can see each gentle brush stroke as she speaks... You can see each dip of the brush as she pauses... I've drawn my whole life, but to do so with words? That's just amazing.
I haven't heard her voice in almost 4 months. I guess that's synonymous to being deaf... or just plain depressed. I'll have to travel to Cali to see her. It'll be worth it.
@SPSKDM Not talking in all caps, using correct punctuation, and spelling everything out the way it was meant to be spelled. Different from talking like a normal person, it takes practice, and listening to people read their poetry. It takes reading as much poetry as you can, soaking up every little word like it was the last drop of water you will ever see. It takes dedication, and understanding.
Does it originally start out as "If I should have a daughter..." or she just added that when she performed at the Ted talk? And I noticed that she replaced "fucking" with "damn", which is a nice adjustment. Personally, I think she sounded better at her Ted talk. Amazing poem by the way :)
THIS IS WONDERFUL...IT'S JUST AMAZING...MY 1ST TIME HEARING STUFF LIKE THIS.....THIS IS INSPIRATIONAL...HOW OLD R U? AND WHAT IS THE TECHNIQUE TO WRITING GREAT POEMS?
well....i wish i would've been warned of all of this before going thru all of this...little girls sometimes grow up thinking life is a fairy tale...but regardless of life's lessons, im still 'pretty fuckin naive' lol i LOVE this one..
@turbo200sx007 Not remotely. If you had even the slightest grasp of what spoken word poetry is, or if you had even listened to her words at all, you wouldn't even begin to think that. This is inspirational and beautiful.
Seriously. This thing called language that man created can't do justice to describe what it feels like to hear her speak. I am trying to find a way to be notified when she performs next but I can't find nada. Help!
@namely2000: No, you're a hater because you don't like something BECAUSE everybody else likes it. Also because you're drowning in negativity, can't deal with your own turmoil and don't like to see someone strong enough to grab their own turmoil by the guts and turn it into something beautiful. Peace.
how do people not cry every time they watch this
I know right!!!

Be strong my love. You are on the right track.

The poem is titled B
The Ted talk is titled wrongly

This never fails to cheer me up whenever I feel sad :)
'Always apologize when you've done something wrong, but don't you ever apologize for the way your eyes refuse to stop shining. Your voice is small, but don't you ever stop singing.'
Beautiful.
I love how every performance it's a different swear in 'pretty ____ niave' 😄
Hadn't noticed it. The more you know, the better. 😄

This is my favorite poem, i heard it in school a few days ago and i loved it.
Love this poem but she performed it 10 times better at TED
+PluviophileInMe I think it's nerves. She's more nervous here, but TED was 3 years after this, so she'd gotten more used to performing.
+PluviophileInMe YES. Her body language and the way she delivers it seem so much natural, and here, it's like she's just reciting, not telling a story, just... reciting. even though she probably wasn't,. it just came out that way.
This has inspired me to to write my own spoken word. Thank you.
literally sitting here speechless & crying. i am so incredibly impressed, girl.
amazing work.
thank you.
Your momma is a worrier but your poppa is a warrior. 🥺🧡
i felt all of that right in a lump in my throat and the goosebumps on my arms and the tears welling up in my eyes... damn onions.
I heard Sarah first from TED. This is really one of my favorites .I'd love to sit down and talk to her, she's amazing...
My friend and I absolutely fell in love with this, so we've painted it on our walls.
I love this poem! It gave me chills because I could really feel it..... I remember when I first saw her on Def Poetry Jam and she is still wonderful and so talented!!!
seeing this and the one she did at the ted talk??? her words come to me like magic
The 12 individuals that hit "dislike" on this performance have never met her mother! Amazing performance, brilliant writer!
I love her stuff. This made me cry. Reminds me of how I am about my daughter.
amazing.

That would be fantastic because I do live in California. I have shown her videos to a couple of my friends and we all love her. Thank you so much for the info.

@whytesurfer This made me teary eyed also the first time I watched it.
Amazing. That is all I have to say about this. Amazing.
Identify two to three topics for Sara Kay's "B'
wow.
amazing.
that's the only word i can come up with to describe this.
'the very ones you want to save are standing on your cape"
whoo! goosebumps... :P
Awesome! I already got a group of friends to come and check her out.
Genius.
how the ocean refuses to never stop kissing the shoreline no matter how many times it's sent away .... very nice
wow.. alright.. alright..

THIS IS WONDERFUL...IT'S JUST AMAZING...MY 1ST TIME HEARING STUFF LIKE THIS.....THIS IS INSPIRATIONAL...HOW OLD R U? AND WHAT IS THE TECHNIQUE TO WRITING GREAT POEMS?
Boys get to have Rudyard Kipling's 'If', and we get to have this :) Absolutely beautiful.
i wish i could express myself that eloquently.
Sweet!
best poet ever
inspiring.
i just LUV this. my fave part is 1:58
i don't usually cry
How do I thumbs up this
I'd love to have permission and an original copy of this so I could recite it in a music festival.
ROFL IKR Klaypex Makes her sound awesome..
In the TED talk... she used the word microscope, but here she has used 'magnifying glass'... and I feel it feels better here, somehow.
well....i wish i would've been warned of all of this before going thru all of this...little girls sometimes grow up thinking life is a fairy tale...but regardless of life's lessons, im still 'pretty fuckin naive' lol i LOVE this one..

check her out on TED she has really awesome 20 minute discussion
Little breaks bewteeen the sentences or words would make this more pleasant to listen to.
omg if this poem was rapped over a beat by gza or rakim....OMG!! fire!!!
@namely2000 I think the delivery is good but a lot of the metaphor is labored. I wouldn't say it's very bad but I wouldn't call it very good either.
I hate the 66 people who unliked this
@rushinrussian11 poetry doesn't have to rhyme, it can but it doesn't have to.
this is exactly the way i want to raise my daughter if i have one...
oh, nooo. One cannot enjoy this after watching the TED performance.
Mm, made me tear up a bit.

Check out Jean Gray if your still lookin for a dope female emcee. Shes for real.
Does Sarah have a myspace? I'd like to get in contact with her about a special recording request!
