Picked up a keeper in 5ft on Saturday, everything in S. Jersey is spitting up spearing where I am at. Thanks John! Also, I don't yet have the discipline to release the fish @ 14:00 lol
Perhaps a video showing the differences between flounder types: fluke, southern flounder, 4 spot flounder, etc. The fluke you caught some did not look like fluke but more like spotted flounder. What do you think?
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Certainly you have caught more than I have ever seen but I think there may be a difference in what is being caught. For example there is a difference between the coloration and design of the top sides as follows: spotted flounders at 3:25, 5:00, 11:15, 13:45 - Southern flounder at 9:30. 8:15, 16:20, 18:15 Possible 4 spot at 15:10. What is interesting is the difference of the markings on these fish. In fact some of the smaller ones looked more like the traditional fluke. Your experience has seen a decline in recent years in this fishing spot but the flounder you caught of reasonable size might not be those fluke making a cyclical comeback but instead a different variety altogether while the small ones may be the resurgence of the fluke from previous years. Either way, it would be interesting if you took note of the markings of the remaining fish this season and gave us your opinion of this difference if any.
@@michaellicitra7632 I also noticed the fish had distinct and varied coloration & markings . As someone who has fished for a lifetime and a new Kayak fluke fisherman its extremely interesting to know the "different" flat fish here on Long Island .
HI John I bought one of those purple kyohga 100sh reels and was wondering if you have a link or any methods for getting the English instructions for it?
Heading to Greenport was just wondering what deth I should start for fluke in two weeks. I have the overlay on the area. Looks very nice. I have never fished long Island. Your videos have me interested. Keep posting and fish on. In
Have you ever tried any Z-Mann soft plastics with the Pro-Cure scents? Here in NC we have an abundance of blue fish as well as pin fish and the Berkley gulp tends to struggle with durability issues. The Z-Mann products are nearly indestructible.
Hey, John love your videos! How would you recommend to approach a new body of water when fishing for fluke? What do you look for and so on? Thanks love the video!
Hi John, I always enjoy and appreciate your fishing videos. You mentioned you shortend your slimwave rod, was that so the length is more manageable fishing from a kayak or to improve the jigging action? Fishing from a boat, which rod do you prefer between the slimwave and the tsunami classic? Thank you!
How do you like the Tsunami Slimwave? I have the one you are using and 4 others. I LOVE 6ft spinning rods from them for schoolies on the kayak. Makes a 12 incher still feel like a fight but I have taken in 15lbers with them.
I have a slim wave. I love how light it is but I find it a little too soft. I know it’s meant for slow pitching, but I’m so used to rapidly jigging that I’ve find myself using heavier and cheaper rods instead. I’m guessing you like the action now that you’ve cut it down? Any problems working the top around the front of the kayak?
Thanks For the video John. Looks like you were having a good time. What was the water temperature during your trip? I was wondering if they stay in that kind of shallow water as it gets hotter.
Hey John do you think we are really seeing now the results of over fishing and depleting our local species? I mean so few stripers around and fluking has not been to great either.
Only if the rig is slightly under the rod, like if you were drifting the "wrong side" of the boat and your rig was going under the boat. If it's scoped out even slightly it almost can't happen. I find it happens if I forward troll with the hobie, which I really avoid so far anyway in favor of backtrolling.
Great video John!! I think you can move you pedals 1 notch further, cause I see you bending your knees sideways. But if you are ok like that, thats the way to go.
Could water quality be the issue for the poor fishing? I fish stripers and fluke mostly off Sandy Hook and The Highlands. The Raritan Bay area has improved a lot since the 90s and so has the fish quality.
John watching you is like watching a Master Fluke fisherman. Short drift Pounding them. I live in NC and we have flounder and some good fishing but nothing like this. Many many shorts and also they are closing our Flounder later this year. If it brings them back then I am all for it but closing for the Hook and line guys and letting the commercial guys still net them makes me sick to my Stomach. If they would just move the Shrimpers two mile off shore would really help our fishery down South.
Nice job, those are some of the best eating fish ! I’m a local Galveston flounder man😉 u definitely have made this look Too easy, but I know u paid your dues...😉
Are you hearing anything about the flesh-eating bacteria in your waters? I am in Delaware & I am afraid to touch the water right now. They have five known cases & warnings everywhere.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing they are advising not to crab or fish or eat any of the seafood. It is happening where brackish hits sea water. Broadkill beach area, Lewes Canal. They just had a young girl swimming in the Assawoman Bay behind Ocean City , Md. That has the bacteria now. Another person crabbing in Jersey in the Maurice River got it so bad they had to amputate both arms at his elbows and both legs at his knees. This is for real and as a fisherman it is scaring the hell out of me.
Hey john, great to see another video. Me and my buddy take trips down to Rhode Island from Connecticut to try and catch some nice flounder. We just tried out your your gulp and bucktale rig and ended up catching a few each. They were all small but still enjoyable to catch. Do you have any good spots to recommend in Rhode Island that have a better chance at larger founder.
I don't know too much about RI, except that a lot of the boats do well at Block Island. I've had people tell me they catch them off the South County beaches, but best to check with a tackle shop in that area.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thanks John, Much appreciation. I think we will defiantly be trying out block island and the South Beaches here soon. Ill let you know if we catch any monsters :)
Anyone try Skinners fluke technique outside of where he fishes? I’ve tried in grand isle, Louisiana without much success. My buddies just told me that’s the ugliest setup They’ve ever seen lol. So maybe certain rigs are meant for certain places?
I'm John skinner and this supports chapter 3 of my book cereal bars from boat shore and kayak.
Nice to see some shallow water fluke action. How about an affiliate link for that cereal bar?
Great, now I'm not going to be able to get cereal bars. John Skinner eats cereal bars while fluke fishing (cereal stock goes up 15%)
Great video John! Good to see the fish are coming back.

4:37 - I love that sound
Hey john just caught my personal best fluke yesterday weighing in at 9 lbs thanks for all the tips 👍🏻
That's a huge fluke right!?! Well done 👍
Yea it was a beast! About 28”
Antonio Villani niiice! Good angling buddy 👍👍
Thanks man 👍🏻
Congrats on that!

Very little fluke fishing is done in Greenport now. Most of the effort is farther east at Gardiners Island or Montauk.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing even on the North Shore side.

Yes. I've tried a variety of soft plastics with Pro-cure.
Hey john thanks for the helpful videos
Thanks for the info I’m going to the outer banks next month with a kayak I’ve never saltwater fished this gives me hope lol.

Google Earth. Most of my shallow bay fishing comes from spots that look good from above. Color differences show the edges.
Thanks John!
John Skinner Fishing what bay was that?
John, how come the fluke fishing book isn't available on Kindle? Great vid, BTW.
I just don't have the time to do it. I need to do it myself to get the video links in.
Would like to see some new under water video with the waterwolf!
your videos are truly amazing!
Did anyone else notice the gulp shrimp come flying by John's head at 100 mph on the second keeper? 🤣
HATE SEEINg those beautiful flounder going back in, lol don't think there is any kind of size limit here along the coast of canada.
Doesn’t miss leg day. 🦵 🏋️

devtoman in another video he shows he cuts the rod down to make it stiffer
That one definitely needs cutting for me to like it. It won't get around the front of my 15-footer.

Don’t have a boat nor kayak. How about from pier or on the beach surf fishing for fluke? Should I use same setup and just keep jigging?
Next video. Promise. I have some older vids from shore. They're well-organized on flounderbook.com.

John, thanks for the reply. That makes sense. I'll take note of my position relative to the rig when drifting going forward.
