LandStar 120 Day Inspection Got Me

- LandStar one hundred and twenty day inspection got me. As a LandStar owner operator, a dot inspection or semi truck inspection is required more often than I like. I had to have a few repairs to my truck or being put out of service. I wasn’t expecting it either. Although the issue wasn’t major, I’m glad it was found and repaired.
I know the LandStar inspection comes around often, but to me it’s just another level of preventive maintenance to make sure my truck continues to run without any issues or surprises.
Be Easy,
Willie D

Solid point on “trust but verify” 👍🏻👍🏻
Wheel seals and chafed air lines are relatively common problems. When I was with Landstar, I learned to never take the truck to a T/A or a Petro for the inspections. Many of them have been known to make stuff up, and the repairs they perform are often sub-par. I would pick a mom and pop or a dealership that is on the list. Also, do not take it to a shop that can not do the repairs. Landstar will force you to tow the truck to the repair shop at your expense, of course. I used a shop close to home, that way I could go home if the shop found problems that were going to take some time to fix.
Right on. I’ll look and see if there is something closer to my city that is approved by LandStar. As for being made to tow my truck to another facility, I’ve heard the horror stories about getting your contract revoked because you moved your truck. I still don’t agree with that. Thanks for the feedback
I quit going to TA or Petro shop to fix or oil change 14 yrs ago,,they know only how to fix a bill and that's it ,, they robbing innocent truck drivers and eny other shop from these truck stops are the same,,stay safe out there
I have also heard that landstar has instructed these shops to " find something wrong". I never I mean never use Ta/ Petro, like already stated the work is usually crap. Use independent shops, even if you do have something wrong atleast you are supporting a local shop to repair.
I believe that...
Willie D - Closing The Gap being a TA inspector for Landstar you have a stricter inspection form that is handed out every inspection. From tread depths to brake liners they are well beyond the measurements required to pass the inspection ... you can thank Shelly at Landstar for that. We all dread doing your inspections for your company because of the miscommunication between you and your company about repairs that should be made to the truck. Not saying all TAs are great but there are some true honest techs out there doing the right thing
Thats why I do these type of repairs myself. Changing the hub seals looks difficult, but in reality its quite an easy repair. So really if you cannot do your own preventive and repair maintenance then its not fair to complain about the costs. And I like Landstars 120 day inspection it keeps you on your toes, and MAKES you get small repairs done before they turn into major repairs.......
Ok, if you read my description you would have read that I too think it’s a
good thing. It keeps you up to date on your maintenance. Also, if you see your wheel seals leaking, chances are you should have already had them done or you’re not looking over your truck enough.
@@ClosingTheTruckingGap hahaha. Yep missed your description I apologise for that. But sometimes we are so busy that making in depth checks seem hard to achieve. But I must say I love your attitude, even having a big invoice to pay you still have a great smile and you can laugh about it.....
Hey man, your smart asking to look to see exactly what they’re replacing! I think it’s a good idea to have an inspection done and it’s a very good idea to do preventative maintenance on your rig!
If that's all you were charged for that work you are blessed. An independent shop would have charged at least twice that from what I have seen in the past. Thanks for the videos, I'm going through and watching them all. Good honest content.
Appreciate your honesty on all your videos bro. !!
Thanks for posting, this will help keep me on my toes, Mid trip inspections are good to help keep out of the rift raft.
Anytime Shotgun
485 bucks ain't the end of the world, it takes money to keep those big trucks up to snuff.
Really???
No fun paying out the money, but really it was a blessing in disguise. It sure beats getting it fixed somewhere on the road in the middle of the night. Stay safe out there and keep us posted
You said it. I’m glad it was found during the inspection
That PM can keep you in the paper. I remember when I had a pager and would have to stop and call the dispatcher and that stop might cause me to lose a load if I got passed up going back to the sand pit. When I got my cell phone the call then could save me from wasting time and fuel if they were through dispatching for the day. Keep rolling.
Keep on going brother, it’s gonna be ok, more than ok. God bless.
In my 21 years of trucking I never heard of a company doing this
Looks like they may have charged you $485 but saved you a ton if you had been put oos in a road side. 👍
Right, right. Somebody else said that. I wasn’t even noticeable outside. You would of had to look close.
That was some good advise about preventive maintenance kno your ride that's the only way your gonna keep the wheels turning an if that's not happening your not earning
Willy I’m with u brother on preventive maintenance and like to see what I’m buying as well I’m in the process now of getting with Landstar been 3 weeks going through the motions with the Indy call center 😂
Most definitely, you can never just take a mechanic at his word, show me what wrong, and how much it's gonna cost.
They work on commission look out, first thing I ask any shop you guys get paid on commission?
You better keep an eye on the opposite side of that wheel seal you replacing you should have done both of them you never just do one. Because the pressure built up and the heat will make the weaker one leak. Always do both wheel seals. You should know that as an owner operator.
I don’t mind inspections. I try to stay on top of things and those guys know more than me and catch things before bad things happen.
Exactly. Now I just choose my inspection sites better
My brother I'm not going to tell you a lie, the information your putting out here is invaluable. Thank you so much for sharing, may Allah bless you and your family!
I thought you got pinched on the side of the road, and was hammered for the $485.00? But damn man you just received some necessary repairs on your truck!
No sir. You said it, necessary repairs. I didn’t want the TA to do the work but I’m glad they found the issues. Could have been worse
Thank you for the video..Have a blessed day..
I just subbed you have good content very informative
I appreciate that bruh. Just trying to tell it like it is
$500 is chump change.. Try to think of how much money he said you by Catching it then.. And by the looks of it he did a lot of work for that 500
On point willie
It happen to me years ago with my 1st truck.in pa we got state inspection. Which are tougher then then fed s. When to a freightliner dealer on I 480 in Cleveland Ohio. Trying to Jack me out of cash I refused and the truck pasted somewhere else plus I did go to diesel tech school so I had and idea about. You have to watch your cash out here.
Man, you ain’t never lied. Money can go fast out here. That’s why when I get home, I get to checking and wrenching. It just feels good when you know what’s up with your truck.
You just needed a repair, or two. Pay me now or pay more later. That shop did you a favor. Fair price too.
Mechanics is paid off commission the more they fix the more they make
Thats why you get a mom n pop shop, those big chain mwchanics is nothing but theives.
So every 120 days they always take money from you cause they'll always find something, but it's better than that extra 2K+ towing expense 🚚
You right about that. Now I have a parts place and a shop to service my truck. I’ll be ready next time
Love the content true facts
Mines about due. Been keeping up on Maintenace so should be good. It sux bc fmcsa says u only need 1 a year smh.
Damn..I thought that driver that was complaining about a $1,000 bill was bad lol..and it was a fair price
No need to complain. What for???
They really should do yearly like other companies
Pre trip....post trip....keep inspecting your truck...
I like that. Trust verify
Exactly
You got lucky sometimes petro will say your spindle is scratch an it be around $1800 other shops around. $200
That’s crazy. That’s why I’m looking for a good mechanic
Is this the same Anthony that has his own trailer and looking at getting his authority?
He saved you a possible fire too. Thats how you have to look at it. And a failed inspection.
Sounds like that 120 day inspection saved U from Bigger Problems and More Money.
Exactly
Bruh, I hear ya, preventative maintenance is key, but remember LS 120 didn't get you. Those same issues would have caused you to be outta service at a roadside inspection, now imagine the cost plus CSA points. In addition, 2 weeks is the earliest you can go to be inspected, your online dashboard starts counting down @ 30 days prior to due date, there's no way for anyone to say, I didn't know.
Anytime you drop your trailer , is a good time to check inside the frame for stuff you won't see while trailer is attached.
I called back to verify and I was told two weeks. I don’t know what my BCO advisor was thinking about. And you right, anytime you drop your trailer, that the best time to go through your truck. Thanks for the comment
Landstar worse than big brother! Continued success.
Lol. Thanks bruh
Good Video... How about doing a video about how BCOs are getting their Landstar contracts pulled over The Sitting Duck Rule... Now that's news that we can use!
That would be a good video. The BCO’s at LandStar already know that the sitting duck policy is in effect and it can cause them to get their contract canceled. They take it serious too.
@@ClosingTheTruckingGap Anyone thinking about coming over to Landstar definitely needs to know about this and anything else that can cause them to get their contracts pulled like, "Four wheelers calling in on them, etc."
They better be listening in orientation
I had the same problem on my 120 day inspection..
That’s ok. We still rolling....
I always stay attached to my trailer to get inspection. And which TA did you go to?. The one I go will tell you what’s wrong if any and let you know. You need to get with me on the location
The T/A in Fontana?!? Crooks! Didn’t cha know?
Yes sir. Like I already said, I’m looking for a local mechanic in my area.
Could be worse could be going down the road bearings freeze up, Worst case scenario truck catches on fire, best case scenario you need an axle specialist 5k at ta.. Both have happen to me..
That’s wild bruh. I hope all is good with you and your truck
I’m about to jump ship from a company I work out of Chicago
Been here 7 years and I lease to work kind of like a owner operator i pay fully of fuel but I’m confused on how the fuel works here at Landstar ….
LandStar provide you two Comdata cards, one for fuel and the other for pay. When you accept a load, you’re provided with a percentage for fuel advance. You have to transfer the dollar amount yourself before you fuel. It’s not a credit allowing you to fuel whenever you want. It comes from the load amount. Also, be certain on your next move. Rates are still low
120 days inspection companies dont do that trust me i'm a long time company driver, land star wow!
Who does flatbed at Landstar? Someone hit me up. I need information please
One night they turned out the shop light and told me to start my truck. He then took a light and shined it all over the running engine. Failed me because he saw a puff of exhast leak.
That’s crazy...Find you an outside mechanic like I did. I’m good now
Hey man like the videos , I’m thinking of coming over to Landstar, been a company driver past 10 years , any advice you can give me ?
Cool. Take your time. Try to get a good truck, save as much money as you can while your learning LandStars system and process and talk to other LandStar drivers so you can get a feel of the community over here. I like it.
Willie D - Closing The Gap thanks brother, hopefully I see you on that side one day .
Dont do it. They will fuck you over 6 ways from sunday
Hey Mr. D looking for info on Landstar van rates right now.
Hey bro… does Landstar have terminals all over the USA or no?
No. Only in a few select locations
Will TA or Pilot give you the list of what they are inspecting so the driver can make sure those things are fix before the inspection.
Not before the inspection. They’ll give you a copy of the final report as they update it based on what they find from your truck.
You have copies of the previous inspections to see what they check.
Man my screw on piece had backed off n grind into the spendeial man they had to get a specialist to come cut it off and put a new one on 1200 $ they can turn out bad if u let it
Trucking.....gotta love it
Willie D when being a o/o you need to learn to work on ur truck. Get your local mechanic where you live. I figured a owner operator like you would have learned that being out on the road TA and shops like that are going to rip you off
Like I said, I wasn’t expecting any work on my truck. But once they start, per LandStar, you can’t move that truck until the work is done. I haven’t locked down a local mechanic yet but you can best believe it’s in the works
You did nothing wrong lol I want to see 🤣🤣 myself
Willie d where you at
Where you at man?
🤙🏻
Them or DOT road side service.
You right. I prefer to keep my truck off the hooks
Rookie
You got screwed by one of oldest tricks they use
are you still with LandStar as 03/29/22 ?
I’m still here. It’s not time to move yet especially with these low rates and high fuel prices
Give us an update OG.
That's alot for that job.
Never again
Still cheaper than a new radiator or transmission. I'd say
Yes sir.
It’s better for a shop to catch that then d.o.t
You right about that
Brake air lines?
What's going on big homie... Can we get an update?
I just posted a video. Check it out
120 inspection is a money tree, con game.
It’s just apart of the contract guidelines if you want to drive under their authority
Do you pull dry van, or flatbed? What kind of money can I make over there bro?
I pull vans. You can do good over here but you have to learn the system and work
Willie D - Closing The Gap ok thanks bro. Good to know.. working hard is all I know.. I love your videos. Keep it up bruh. I live in Arizona. When was at Mercer, it was very hard to find loads.. blessings.
Bro what's the difference between being landstar ranger or inway or express?
I think Inway move that heavy stuff
Is landstar an owner operator company?
Only owner operators
You still with landstar?
Color me stupid but wouldn't a proper pretrip have caught this?
And somebody gave this a thumbs up. Not if you can’t see it. Even with a system air brake test, you would’ve have known it. You can’t see a seal leaking not unless it’s already failed.
The mechanic seem it? So would have a driver during a proper pre trip? Unless your saying the only he seen it was to take the drum off? But I've never seen then drop a drum during an inspection unless there was an issue to begin with? Same with the air line?
Apparently without coffee I fail at proper English lol. Sorry bout all those errors😋
Get a flashlight and look from the inside. You have to lay under the truck to see it.
Brah where you from if from southern cali i go you, never take your equipment to TA For maintenance!!!!!!!!
I know but I didn’t have any other choice.
@@ClosingTheTruckingGap im form from Los Angeles, I have several places form cali to tx to ar you just need a little help , alot of your money is going to go on maintance in trucking, you can't take every problem to TA or the dealer , you'll fall out the game
robinjohnson131@gmail.com email me brah
But they sent it in that you failed on your inspection now you going to have to go online and take all kinds online courses for failing inspection for your wheel seals brakes airlines brake Chambers now you going to be doing school work on the computer.
So if you got the repairs done, why did you receive the fine from Landstar.
I didn’t get fined. Did I say that?
U have 6 months
Never go to any TA or dealership
I prefer the dealership
Why would anyone lease to that mickey mouse company? You're wearing out your equipment and not able to replace it.
That shouldn't have been more then 250.00 every thing
Not at a truck stop labor is about $65 and everything cost more there it cost $121 to change tractor air line to trailer parts and labor
If I would of had the work done somewhere else. The parts are cheap but the labor is ALWAYS the killer
Thats an unrealistic valuation if you go to any decent shop. $250 would just about cover Labour rates.
@@compcast. What chain truck stop are you going to with a labor rate of $65 in the last 2 decades?
Bullshit brake parts cleaner clean them up no replace at all & then throw washing powders in drum to that soak the brake clean up
Maybe so but I don’t like quick fixes. I’m on the road way too much
Own or lease, you deduct expenses from your income tax. No one "got you".
Exactly. You get to depreciate your truck, write off the interest paid that year from your truck note, which helps lower your taxes and so much more. Who cares about the title of owner operator, you’re learning to build a business to support you and your family
Man stay away from TA s for your inspections.
Lesson learned. Going back to a LandStar approved shop in San Diego next month.
Lol $500 wait till you get a real repair. Won't be long with a truck over 600,000
Lol. I hear you. Already had an frame done, front suspension replaced, new dpf system, fuel air separator replaced, turbo replaced and then some. The rebuild has about 140k miles on it. That’s why I got the truck. All truck break down. I’m sure you already know this though
@@ClosingTheTruckingGap willie , you called it! Sometimes you can look the other way But
When you are along the side of the road . And Not making $$$.
Come find a simple hose, or
Dot finds it, not good
could have fixed it yourself for under a hundred bucks.
That's some bs
Stop apologizing bro ain't nothing wrong with asking mechanic too show you bad parts
I know. It wasn’t for me. It’s for the folk who think it’s wrong to ask.
Did u look the truck over before u took it in...no....too much UA-cam..
Come on bruh...are you helping or hating. In my other videos I told you I Pretrip my truck. I said when you sitting, make sure you go over your truck because you don’t want to pay for the hook. I said look for leaks, smells, change in revs etc.Pretrip or not, you wouldn’t have seen it. If I didn’t have a clue or if I wasn’t ready for this truck or LandStar I wouldn’t have made the move. It ain’t got nothing to do with UA-cam videos.
