What do you guys think about shooting portraits with Ricoh GRIIIx? Have you used previous GR models for portrait photography? Let me know your experience👇
I just picked up a iii x less than a week ago, I’ve already found myself shooting more than I’ve ever shot living in Chicago the past 4 years. This camera has opened up so many possibilities and changed my entire philosophy of how I approach photography.
Love seeing people use GRs in their own way. I’ve had a grii for a few years as my main cam and love so many things about it. I’ve taken plenty of portraits on the grii but have felt the iiix would be better for this, however I couldn’t find any good examples for this use. These are excellent, the best gr iiix portraits I’ve seen and proof that it can be done!
Thank you Jordan - I appreciate your thoughts and really glad that you like my GR shots. I`ve had the GRII as well and had a blast with this camera. To be honest - when I sold it I immediately regreted it. Few months later I got myself the GRIIIx - I won`t be making the same mistake again of letting go of GR camera 😅
This is EXACTLY what I was looking for!! Just got my griiix and this was my plan for it! Some portraiture work!! Amazing shots!!! Soooo good!!! 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Finally, exactly my true emotions about the Ricoh system. Thank you for your insights. I’m just really inLove with the GR lllx. Incredible B&W’s! Thank you for sharing. 😇
Unbelievable that soo stunning photos are coming out of such a tiny camera! After watching this and other videos I will upgrade my sony rx100 III to the Ricoh GR III. It is amazing that this Rico is extremely sharp at the edges, a Fuji X-E4 with its 27mm (40mm KB) 2.8 is way less sharp at the edge and in the center, too, even at high aperture. absolutely stunning!
Thank you for your kind words! Indeed the GR is a surprising piece of tiny gear that makes the photography fun and full of quality. I had the X100F before and even it was "small", I found out I`m not using it enough, often leaving it at home. I take the GR literally everyday in my small bag to work, to the city, during casual hikes. It`s really an amazing companion. No paid promotion here - just facts ;)
@@DigitalRetro Yes the very small size is that what I want, to take it with me every day, I am often out. I ordered the Ricoh some hours ago and now I am waiting :)
Your pictures look amazing! I had the regular gr3 but sold it. The 3x is really tempting. Especially as i already have a 28mm fixed lens camera. Would you say the 3x is as sharp as the normal gr3? Often times i just could not believe the sharpnes of the gr3 lens...
I've been put off by the reports of problems with dust in the sensor and the rear wheel, which is known to stick. That said, I'm very intrigued and tempted to buy one.
@@7743dustin I do like it. Really it`s great for everyday and travel needs. The 40mm gets you a very versatile perspective and the macro mode is great for close details. But I really do recommend the GA-2 adapter and UV filter as I`m really confident and feel safe for my GR with those on.
Well, I think we won't see the GRIV this year, maybe 2025 - especially now that they released the GR3/GR3X HDF which is totaly unnecessary imo. I'd love if they make GRIV slightly bigger to keep ibis, maybe with a 33/40mp sensor and bring back the removed flash and add even a tiny little evf. That would be the GReatest GR for me.
This is the original bokeh from GRIIIx. No alteration except the bnw preset. The GR lens is really good and sometimes it produces results that are very close to full frame 🙃
Great video! I am very close to purchasing this camera, appreciate this review. Two questions, were the photos in this video straight out of camera in JPEG or Raw? Or which format, and were there edits done? Lastly, have you tried the video feature yet? I am wanting to use it for video at home for fashion videos etc. Thanks for the help!
Thank you! All photos were edited from RAW/JPEG files mostly using my LR presets and simple slider adjustments like highlights/shadows/contrast/etc. And how I love the photos from this camera. the video on GRIIIx is rather poor - you can find it on my other GR review. Although the newest firmware improved the IBIS in video, but still the IQ and AF are terrible, so I wouldn`t recommend this camera for video.
Great video! Where did you order and how much was the adapter you have on your GR? I’m wanting to get a GRiiix for an everyday, travel camera. It sounds like an amazing camera but I guess the criticisms have been dust on the sensor. Is that why you added the adapter and protective filter?
Thank you! The adapter is a GA-2 from Ricoh(I probably ordered it on Amazon or from my local photo store - cant remember now - it was around 55 USD - There is a NiSi one as well which is cheaper than original(around 25 USD). I purchased it to protect my GR from dust and the lens damage(I`m really overprotective about my gear!). But I guess it works - it`s been over a year and I didn`t clean my lens even once and the sensor is dust free. I did however stick small bits of tape to microphone holes to prevent sucking up dust from front side. It`s rediculous I know, but the dust issue is unfortunately present in GR2/GR3/GR3x for all these years - a little strange Ricoh didn`t address this so far. Anyway I still stand that GR3X is one hell of a EDC with awesome image quality.
My friend; what the fuck? This was phenomenal. You have completely changed my perspective as a photographer here. I have been ignoring the GR3X and looking towards the GR3 or waiting on the GR4 as a replacement for my X70, because I like the 28mm, but your photos are so incredible I am now curious to see more from the 40mm here. I will subscribe. Your aesthetic is great, very nice colour and tone. How much work are you doing in post production to get to that point? I ask because I'm a jpeg only shooter.
Hey mate, it`s so goood to hear such praise here! I will definitely make some more videos about the GR3x - with some of my editing methods as well. In fact I`m a really simple man(and lazy I guess) - I hate complex editing - simplicity is my way. I shoot RAW+JPG but mostly just do the simple color corrections and grain in post. For many shoots I did only JPGs. Also I`ll be testing new editing plugin and make a video about it - it will be published in the first half of January, so stay tuned! - ps. Huge thanks for the sub!
Although I`m not Chris, I hope you meant me :D Considering the two I totally choose the GRIIIx - it`s got superb image quality(where Fuji is very hazy up close). It`s also so small and unnoticable(even witht the filter adapter on). Cheers! ~Rav
This video is so much helpful it helps me to clear up my mind for choosing between GR3 or GR3X. Since I casually love portrait photography more, your photo is so much convincing to my mind. Thank you for that I feel very comfortable now. I will make decision on buying GR3X! xD Love your work man!
Thank you so much for your kind words! I hope you`ll have a great time with the GRIIIx! It`s a great camera for portraits and street that you just want to keep using on.
I’m loving the Gr3 & Gr3x. What are your thoughts on the high iso noise reduction settings? Best to leave it off for the grain you mentioned, right? Or do you leave it on low or auto?
GR IIIx uses High ISO IR only for jpegs, so I leave it on Auto. This way if I`m satisfied with the grain on the JPeg i just leave it as it is, but still I can use unprocessed image if I want to keep the original grain and make some adjustments to RAW exposure, ect. Somehow I do find adding more grain to less grainy GR shots with Polar mobile or desktop LR for a very pleasing effect.
To be honest I don`t use the Snap Focus too much, but on the street I sometimes use the 2-2,5m with f/5.6 or f/8. However I mostly prerer the AF-S and subject tracking so far.
Hi Julia! My fav focal lenght is 35mm so I if I had to choose(and had the money), I`d most for sure go with the X100V - its wider, has f/2 and the Fuji color science.
I’m on hols with my wife. I have my Leica Q (she knows I have it) and my new GR III Street edition (she don’t know but yet has not noticed it😇) Wanting to do some comparisons with shooting experiences etc. you cannot imagine a more complex and covert scenario for this task. But I have stuck with the Q, the GR only used once in 8 days. I have a street shooting style that works with the Q and learning new technique with wife watching will not work. So frustrating. Help!
Well getting close with 18mm lens will give you more distortion than with 26mm of the GRIIIx, not to mention the better background separation from the 40mm equivalent - anyway sometimes you can`t get closer or farther away and that`s the main problem with fixed and prime lens :)
Hello there! All the photos in the vid were shot with standard 26mm lens(40mm equivalent) without the teleconverter. I only use the GA-2 with UV filter to prevent lens dust and damage. Cheers!

Great camera and review 📸 my first camera was GR ii and I really like portraits from it. But 40mm is better :)
@@chernobaev Yep the GRII was great, I had it too. IMHO it was way better than GRIII - The GRIIIx has the dope focal lenght tho 📸

Did you find the lack of a viewfinder challenging on sunny days, was it hard to see the screen? I too am from Chicago.
I’ve got an r6 but not a fan of evf also I want something’s that’s gonna be on me
Both the Ricoh's are fantastic. Get the separate finder , it helps with the sunny conditions.
One of the rare videos you just get stunned, sit and watch. I love you man, thank you very much !

What an impressive little camera! The tones in some of those portraits… wow! 🤙🏼
Indeed it is impressive - a fine example of "never judge a book by its cover" 🙃
I have both the GRiii and GRiiix. They’re both great for portraits.
imho 28mm portraitures strech faces too long and wide to call it a suitable portraiture focal length
Ice content buddy I don't know how many subscribers you have but they were 400 now you have the 401, coming to roll on your club buddy. Rock on!
Was on the fence about the GR IIIX but not any more after watching this wonderful video
Thank you - hope you will have much fun with it 👋🏻📷

Thank you! Glad to hear I`m not the only one to feel that way!
I have a gr ii. All it needs is an evf instead of the lcd screen and the 40mm lens.
It is nearly a perfect camera.
I agree - the evf would be awesome but 40mm just suits me more as an universal focal lenght. Anyway GrII is dope as well📷
Wow nice video love the quality
2:47 and 2:51 are awesome. They kind of remind me of fuji Classic Chrome Film simulation. Is this a special Ricoh recipe ?
