    Even though the GR III does not WR I can tell you it can take some hits due to recent experience. I slipped and fell waist deep into a glacier lake recently in Norway, my GR in my hand having the strap not attached to my wrist. So my GR was floating in the lake for a few seconds in ice cold water. After the accident I took out the battery and cleaned of the water a bit. But then also continued shooting a bit. (I know you shouldn't do that..) The photos had a little foggy look to them. Then I turned the camera on and took the battery out while it was on, so the lens would stay open and extended. I put it on a desk for a night with the battery door open as well. Since then, the fog disappeared and it works as before, pictures look like before. Long story short, the GR definitely can take a little rain etc. as it works perfectly now after having been covered in ice cold water for a short amount of time.

    Of course the GR iiix is announced 5 days after I get the GRiii which I love and would love more if it had a 40mm focal length which is my fav. But I love the 28mm too but I also need a 40mm but I need to pay rent and buy food and stuff. Maybe I can just starve for a few months, that way I can have both!

    • @Nearest_Neighbor
      @Nearest_Neighbor 2 роки тому +3

      Nah, who needd food anyways, right? :D I got mine a few weeks ago and am really tempted to buy the x. But I just love my iii and the almost infinite depth of field.

    • @Ibibiogal
      @Ibibiogal 2 роки тому +1

      @@Nearest_Neighbor I know, it's inevitable that I'll get the iiix and keep the GR iii. That 28mm field of view coupled with Ricoh's tech can't be beat but there is something about the 40mm. I only get to shoot in that focal length on my Minola CLE and whenever I view the negatives the feeling I get from that depth of field is different/better than any other. In my opinion. The 28mm field of view has a similar magic if you compose correctly.

    • @Nearest_Neighbor
      @Nearest_Neighbor 2 роки тому +1

      @@Ibibiogal Don't say that! I need to suppress that thought! 😅 The second I saw this in my news feed I was: "Damn, I guess I need to buy a second GR now." But I really have to work at my gas. The GR is the first digital camera with which I feel somewhat connected. Quite literally, it's always in my hands when I'm out. Now I try to 'force' myself to use it for the foreseeable future until I can justify my dream camera(s).

    @samuel thankful to see you've kept your connection with Ricoh, I hope they recognize how much you help them. I cant think of anyone better to ask them directly about having an LCD ON AF/half-press firmware setting that turns off immediately after preview. this way the LCD is only on during the actual act of shooting/review, keeping stealthy but more crucially saving battery (our darling camera's achilles heel). or at least adding more options to the Auto Sleep Mode (10, 15, 30 sec) would also serve our poor batteries greatly. thank you and please continue this great thing going 🙏🏼

    Might be the best GR IIIx review not just for now, but of all times. Because time was spent not only to take good example photos, but due to the effort to explain about 40mm FOV. From my not common FOV, 40mm POV it is just too narrow. I like GRD cameras I have, but I constantly reach for 21mm. Layers and framing is still achievable with 21, but you have to like to be close. Which is not always good during COVID.

    • @courtneysmith731
      @courtneysmith731 2 роки тому +2

      Hi, Q2/GRiii owner, here! Love both cameras. Often, I carry both with me. For street photography/travel, you can’t beat the GR’s compact size - (the Q2 is bulky in comparison, wearing mine around my neck.) There are many pluses to owning the GRiii or GRiiix over the Leica Q2. Firstly, the sensor. Compared to the digital cameras I own, the GR produces the best colour and black and white files, period. The RAW files, are also incredible, as they are DNG’s. Secondly, USB-C charging. Yes, the GRiii’s battery is limited, compared to the Q2. But the in-body charging makes all the difference. I love that. Wish I could plug in my Q2 to USB-C (like the SL2) but that’s down to waterproofing. My biggest dislike is the charging times for the Q2 battery. You’re out of the game until then. The Ricoh GRiii can do everything, more or less, that the Q2 can do. With advantages as mentioned above. Excited to try the GRiiix - if Ricoh did a full body SL2 style camera, I wouldn’t look back. I trust them. Ricoh is the future of digital photography.

      @stuhunter 2 роки тому

      @@courtneysmith731 I also own the GR III as well as the Q2. Love them both. definitely prefer the Q2 but the GR III ends up coming with me more often because of it’s tiny size (and incredible quality images). I will definitely be adding GR IIIx to my bag as soon as it is available :)

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  2 роки тому

      Hi Elias, sorry for the late reply! I prefer TV with the GR because the depth of field is much broader than full frame and I can get a lot more in focus (even with 2.8) than with a full frame camera. And in Av mode you give up control over speed which is very important for street photography. I compensate aperture by manually setting a higher ISO value to raise the aperture value.

The only concern I have are their build quality and lousy app. My GRIII front blue ring dropped off, the back button was not aligned properly. The wifi connection was iffy. And the app was available to download 1year after I got the camera. Even then it was full of bugs and not as good as a third party app written by a Korean hobbyist. My two favorite digital cameras have been the GR ii and the GXR A12 50mm Macro module (my favorite lens on any format ever). This new GR iiix strikes me as potentially an ideal blend of the two- I do a lot of my shooting in the near-macro range (rarely at the minimum focusing distance of the GXR module). I'd love to see how this new lens performs at its closest focusing distances. With the higher sensor resolution and cropping I imagine it would still meet my near-macro shooting needs as well as the GXR macro module, which I have now loved to death and need to replace!

    • @DaTrip2warez

      @erikdanielson9189 2 роки тому

      @@DaTrip2warez I'm not sure I understand what you mean? They certainly are all well engineered, but share many things in common. The GR ii more or less shares its form factor with the iii x, while the GXR A12 is closer to its focal length. All of them share Ricoh's UI sensibilities and optical design/coating principles. If the iii x performs well at minimum focus distance, it will combine the aspects I most enjoy about each of the two preceding cameras.

    Not really a fan of 40mm equivalent lens, but it's great to have an option!

    Now that the zone focusing has lost its significance with the normal focal length, the autofocus becomes more important. Did you notice any improvement over the GR-III in terms of autofocus speed?

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  2 роки тому +1

      GR IIIx and GR III are both identical cameras. Only the lens is different. So AF speed will be the same. If anything then I think the GR III might be faster because the lens "travels" less. But I don't feel a difference. And zone focusing with the GRIIIx is easier than with a 35mm on full frame camera and people have been doing that for decades so it shouldn't be a problem. I use snap focus on the GR IIIx without any issues.

      @@SamuelStreetlife It's interesting to note that the real focal of the GRIIIx is basically the focal that was used on film Ricoh GR and people were able to snap focus back then.

    It's intriguing, but I can't live without a viewfinder in daylight and preferably an EVF. If Ricoh would lengthen the body (if necessary) and add a pop-up EVF like on the Sony RX1R II, I couldn't resist buying it. While they're at it, Ricoh should upgrade to the 26MP BSI sensor used by Fuji, because why not? A camera like this would keep the street-shooters happy (still pocketable), while also being a fantastic travel camera (with the EVF deployed) and I think Ricoh would steal market share from the X100V. I think they might be able to get $1500 for it. If they also wanted to add some weather sealing, I wouldn't complain.

    Is Ricoh making a new camera for every focal length ? If given a choice 24 /35mm would be better .Just my opinion..

    I was going to get the GR3 (28mm) but now I'm not sure which focal to use😜. Maybe will get the 28mm because nature of snapshot camera and getting everything into the frame.

    Hi, nice vid.
    Like the look of the photos. Did you shoot raw or jpeg in these shots?
    I ordered the cam and now reading about problems capture one interpreting the dng files. There seems to be a workaround but don’t know how well that works. I am quite pedantic when it comes the colors and look.
    Perhaps by chance you have experience with the 3X and Capture One?
    Best

    Hi Samuel, great video as always!
    You are the reason that I got one of the first and best photo albums that I own, "Friction/Tokyo Street by the amazing Tatsuo Suzuki"...
    I have one probably irrelevant question, but please allow me so... Could you tell me where you got and how much did it cost, the beautiful grey jacket that you wear in the beginning of this video? Thank you very much for your time and keep going stong and creative!

    whats strange about back ground separation is - "who made that the standard?" and im reminded how zone focusing in street photography is very common - shooting at your f8 or more - so what back ground separation are we even looking for?
    in any case a very interesting progressing for GR and here's to fuji to bring new lens type for their X100V or maybeeee X80??
    thanks for the video - and hope to see more of this camera as well.

    I have been hearing about issues with the back wheel on the GRiii which is a bummer given I like that it has IBIS. Is the GRiiix better in build quality? After hearing all this stuff I don't see myself buying it at all given the risks of dumping money into something built to break. Am I better off buying a GRii?

    Yes, a quality street tool with a lens less wide than I 'see' - sorry about that. I intend sticking with the incomparable Fujifilm XF10. I am aware of the claims that the GR series has a problem with sensor dust, and many have the very bad habit of putting this 'pocketable camera' in their pocket, a world of dust and lint. To use one of the two great American adjectives in the contemporary lexicon, 'insane'. Buy a small camera bag, SS, and set an example.
