I've had the best luck with Arm an Hammer's pet stain and odor carpet cleaner. Not sure whether the old UV stains in my rental are pee, vomit, or any other fluids that shine under blacklight though, I've heard pee notoriously leaves behind crystals that embed in the carpet fibers

Regarding the smell. I didn’t test this because I could think of no logical way to fairly measure it. I do know that there was no noticeable smell in the room after treatment, when there definitely was before treatment. I asked my assistant to smell each spot and see what he could discover, but he declined.

See this is actually a really important component of the test missing. If there is any residual smell a dog will repeat that behavior. Believe me from experience, even the best carpet cleaner could still leave behind residual smell. As far as I’ve noticed enzymatic cleaner’s are best at removing the smell and preventing future spotting by dogs. Maybe bring in a dog and see if he peas all over the carpet Hah Hah

    • @fragmentalstew
      @fragmentalstew 2 роки тому +17

@@ranikaj92 Yes, this is true. Also cat pee is worse because of the higher percentage of protein. The enzymatic cleaners are better at breaking down the proteins.
Edit: when I use an enzymatic cleaner, I wet the area thoroughly and then leave a plastic bag, usually a trash bag, over the top of it to keep it wet, and let it sit for 24 hours. Far different from the process used here. Using the enzymatic cleaner in this way, then going over it again with the oxy cleaner, blotting it up, and then going over it again with a steam cleaner might be the ultimate way to remove a stubborn pet stain.

The smell test is a HUGE must! (Maybe next time kindly ask a woman friend to help because we're a lil more inclined to smell weird things than men are. Lol) I swear tho that anything that's labeled for "pet urine" automatically makes the spot smell 10xs worse, not better. Even if the pee stain didn't smell all that bad before, after cleaning it with pet urine remover it smells awful! I actually came here looking for a good cleaner, which I'll totally try the resolve you mentioned, but how it smells afterwards is a huge factor for most people. Honestly, I've just been kinda using a wet rag soaked with dawn dish liquid when my cat pees, ugh, and that seems to have better smelling results than the bottle of bissell pet urine pro something or other we have. That stuff straight up smells like perfumed piss in a bottle! Lol Ugh, it's so bad!

Do you have any tips for deodorizing the spot cleaner machines? After purchasing one based on your reviews, I love it, but after months of cleaning, the thing stinks to high heaven. Washing/sterilizing the wastewater bin doesn't have the desired effect.

You missed the important part, how did it do on the smell? I can get the stains out NP but getting rid of the residual smell is the big issue. Did you use carpet padding? Because once the pee gets down to the padding, and it will, a few squirts of cleaner isn't going to reach it. Interesting test and it cheers me up that you came to pretty much the same conclusion I did after a few years of experimenting thanks to an incontinent dog. Resolve spray then carpet cleaner for best results.

I agree with you. I've used that Resolve cleaner and, while it does get the urine stain up, the smell comes back within a week. Good video. As a "pet person" with carpet, I have had lots of experience with stains. I find using a high-powered wet/dry vac to suck out the urine and dampness after cleaning to be very effective. I got the idea by watching a professional carpet cleaner clean my carpet. And like Chris mentions, being careful not to spread around the stain when sucking it out. I'd also add that there is no substitute for an occasional visit by a good professional carpet cleaning company. And a pet-resistant underlayment also helps. Coyote urine is worse than cat urine? Ick!!

If you do use an iron make sure it is not too hot and be careful not to burn or melt the carpet fibers. That is because you will have a spot there that is a lot more obvious than a smelly yellow spot. If the fibers melt there may be a noticeable spot where the carpet texture does not feel the same. Also I would consider using an iron to be an "advanced" step. If you know someone who has a steamer you may want to see if you can borrow that first. With a steamer you won't run the risk of applying 450°F or more to the carpet.

Considering the urine stains, yes you can remove most of them but unfortunately the main issue is in the pad which carpet that has become heavily or moderately saturated over time will need to be replaced. There is absolutely nothing you can do unless you want to use a product like decon 100 or 200 or a scent stop offered by Mohawk which can remove the smell. Most these products are commercial but can be purchased online.

I've been online searching for the Mohawk Scent Stop and can't find it anywhere. I've called all over even to Mohawk and no one knows or has anything. If you have a link, can you share?

I know this is a little late but, If I were to use Resolve and put Baking Soda with it. Would that work? I am asking with baking soda because I know baking soda does kill odor and wondering if this could be a extra step I can take? I normally use baking soda when my cat goes on the carpet as you can just sweep up some of it and then vacuum the rest but the stain is still there but the odor really isn't.

Do you recommend shampooing immediately after using the resolve or waiting 24 hours, vacuuming, then shampooing?

Love your videos! For your upcoming 2022 videos, I'm wondering if maybe you could help me find my perfect vacuum - which I'm not sure even exists! I’m looking for a powerful cordless vac that doesn’t put weight on my wrist; that is very zippy, lightweight, and easy to move around; that doesn’t have a roller brush (or has one that is removable without negatively affecting performance or is truly tangle & maintenance free); that has a sealed filtration system, long battery life (and/or ability to purchase another battery and keep it charged separately); bagless preferred but depends on the price of the bags. I would be embarrassed to speak of how many vacuums I have bought and tried over the years and relegated to storage. I have yet to find "the One" and my husband thinks I have a problem at this point. Please help! Looking forward to your 2022 reviews!

Hi. I am moving into an apartment that has a sweet perfume smell in certain areas on the carpet.. specifically along the floorboards in certain areas and two corners in the bedroom. I think the person probably had pet(s) I'm wondering if you know of a product that has a sweet-perfumie smell. I am wanting to get the chemical smell out and or neutralize it some how. Thank you for any help and ideas. Diane

Personally the best way is to over saturate the urine ( about 1.5 to 2 times the amount of urine) and let it air dry.. this will get 98% of the smell and sticky urine substance... You can't really get rid of it 100% because to do that you have to pull up the carpet and treat the subfloor, pad and carpet ... If you want to carpet clean after the enzyme cleaner dries you can.. just you never want to carpet clean an old stain ( had time to dry) because the carpet cleaner will simply spread the urine around... You need the enzyme cleaner.. but if you do not mind the smell of vinegar for about 4 days maybe a week it will destroy the urine smell at a fraction of the price

Thanks, but my issue is the stain coming back a week or two later. Have you tested this before? My apologies if you already addressed this.
Also, my pet stains are exposed to sun so may also be heat set. 😢 ugh! I used not Kids & Pets and Folex before using a carpet cleaner w/ Febrez Oxy. Thx

I would be interested to know how the spots smell after cleaning and if the spots get dirty quicker after cleaning because of the "stickiness" of the cleaner being left on the carpet.

Big problem with resolve though. It may be the best in these tests. But it leaves TONS of residue. There is so much foam and soap left in the carpet after using resolve. I found Bissell works almost as well but leaves far less residue.

In my quest to find the perfect cleaner, I recall that it's bad to use heat. As far as organic stains (sweat, grass, blood, urine, food etc) heat 'bakes' in the stain/odor. Really the few people that should use hot water wash are mechanics or people treating an outbreak of some sort (fungus, lice, fleas, etc) as about half of dryers do not get hot enough to deal with these issues.

did you try soaking some of the urine up? before trying anything else. Seems that would help. instead of leaving it and then adding cleaner to it.

I think it would be interesting to tell if using a chemical pretreatment would reduce the efficacy of enzyme cleaners.

Same advice my Granny gave me years & years ago when I asked her about other carpet stain removal (non-urine). Back then I thought to myself that surely she was wrong, Silly me,,,I failed to take into account the woman always had white carpet in @ least 1 room of her home and had a dozen grandchildren in her home & then the great-grandchildren too. In a relatively short timeframe afterwards, I discovered she was correct but unfortunately not before she passed from this life.

Could you please redo the carpet cleaner solution with urine as well? Watched that video about 10 times now whenever I have to order more cleaner. If you could do separate swatches of carpet to then test the left over urine smell.

great stain test - but it's the smell that's key. it get's into the pad - a spray to remove the stain, sure. but the enzyme has to get into the pad.
