Its not even really that bad. The reverb is the reason it sounds this way. I do, however, wonder how short the video would be if he took out all the “um”s and repetitive words/sentences. ❤️
The real gem in the positive stoic outlook, which can't be missed, is that these people he describes know something those around them didn't. In the moment, their vision was grander. They saw the obstacle before it occurred and knew it would not cripple them. They weren't caught by surprise when the obstacle occurred AND they didn't naturally operate in a reactive way. Most people walk through life moaning what has happened to them and never really have a true vision for what their life could be .. something to be all in on. So their state is always reactive.
This "Um" guy really made himself proof that the obstacle is the way. If you watch his videos now, there's a really significant improvement with how he speaks.
I concieve stoicism differently. Where he says that we can turn 'bad' things into good, I don't concede that 'bad" exists. For me, all value is relative, events just 'are'; they're not in need of conversion from one state to another if they're intuitively concieved as perfect. Remember, 'A sage is impervious to misfortune'.
Thanks to my immense hatred of reading books, I learnt how to survive at a university without having to read. I just simply record the lessons and learn only that information; when the teachers have only 90 minutes to speak about a subject, what are they then going to talk about? The most important parts of that subject of course. Now I can crush the same knowledge as other students, but several times faster. I can study, while still having a balanced life, unlike them, who never struggled like I did.
If Rockefeller is one of the main examples and models of stoic optimism, I'd say that this philosophy can be just as dangerous as it can be useful. Rockefeller was Machiavellian beyond belief. Stoic optimism is great if it is coupled with pure and good intentions and actions. Without these, not so much.
+Green Deane There is truth in that. I don't really know a lot about stoicism (besides what this guy is saying and what I've heard from a couple of others). I was more commenting on his use of Rockefeller as an example. So my point stands if in fact Rockefeller did employ stoicism how this guy is saying.
+rahimick5 Completley agree, the stoics themselves spoke of a life guided by love for neighbor. Controlling your emotions and passions for your own sake will not give you happiness if you do not do good to others. Loving yourself, as a way to live according to nature, but love to others as well, wishing them to live according to nature as well. Doing good to others.
rahimick5 I think he is employing a specific part of Rockefeller’s actions to as an example of a specific aspect of stoicism, namely not letting obstacles and difficulties cause one unnecessary emotion distress. I don’t think he (or an stoic) would say that Rockefeller was a stoic in virtue, but that this is weekly a example of a specific tenant that he used in the instances he mentioned.
4:50 - "a scientist doesn't get upset when a hypothesis they had turns out to be wrong" based on the last two years, they actually use it as an opportunity to bend the truth so it looks like their hypothesis was right
Excellent talk, *****. Thank you. "Our actions may be impeded... but there can be no impeding our intentions or dispositions. I was first cursing about some youtube video have no Closed Caption, and some wikipedia page have no Chinese translation. But it turns out, I'm forced to learn English, and I can feel I'm progressing little by little.
Timelessly great concepts, the nursery of greatness. Edit: it includes a small chance to use these ideas, in that this type of audio causes me to cement these ideas to mind
Thanks to a lack of friends at my university, I've taken learning social skills seriously for the first time in my life. When I've become a master of it, I will become so much more powerful and live a so much more fulfilling life than I ever did before.
I noticed on the comments, yes, the audio sucks, but I bet you made a better effort in trying to listen and paying more attention to te Talk ;) hence "The obstacle is the way" Just learned about Ryan Holiday books a little while ago, and been researching on them. Looking forward to start reading their books.
This observation may seem a little esoteric but electric current will not flow unless there is a load otherwise it is nothing more than a potential. Which in some way to me validates the statement via the laws of electricity/nature that the obstacle is the way. We choose to do these things not because they are easy but because they are hard.
"My essay that I have been working on all week was lost when my hard drive crashed" -> "Next time I will save in multiple places as I go." P.S. Github is also a great resource for authors to see how their writing changes over time through the revision/editing process.
When I think of Stoicism I think more about the practice of negative visualization. That doesn't sound quite optimistic does it? The idea as I understand it is to visualize a negative outcome for a coming event or day and think about how you will deal with it or be prepared for anything other than a positive outcome. This way you are not surprised or caught too off guard by anything. This doesn't mean you load all you car repair tools into your car in case you break down on the way to work or pack 3 changes of clothes everywhere you go. I see it as an exercise in handling stress and life's situations and not have a complete meltdown when everything doesn't go perfectly. It is intended to be an exercise with a positive result for dealing with life but the term " negative visualization " would have you thinking Stoicism is anything but positive.
I'm not sure why I avoid Ryan Holiday ? He seems to be more about self help then about stoicism . He seems more about helping people improve themselves and stoicism is his tool and example for that . I look for ancient Greek philosophy he is not about that . Totally respect what he is doing though. Just not my cup of tea at this exact moment.
I’m curious as to what Greek philosophy you’re referring to/looked into? His main focus is Stoicism, which by at least my brief study of, pertains to the self and how to interact with circumstances outside of your control. It’s almost by definition, a philosophy of self help. It’s a philosophy rooted in morality and ethical behaviors that must start with you and yourself. Just my two cents but with respect ✌️
Taylor Stone ive tend to gone down several different paths that link up with stoicism, neo stoicism which is found in Catholic teachings ( not Catholic) cognitive therapy for therapy ( im not into therapy just it's application ), and Seneca , as Seneca has the largest volumes of reading material. I avoid Marcus aurelius as i understand why now he wanted his books burned.
another historical figure who used being a prisoner in aushwitz to overcome and help other overcome: victor frankl, his book 'in serach of self', recommended.
Rockefeller controls 90% of the worlds oil in the great depression, he's gone way past rising above his hardships, he has become a james bond villain, and he definetely didn't do it by playing by the rules.
Not a great or typical TED talk... most Tedtalks are well rehearsed.. this is more like just a talk, a lot of “ums” and so forth. I wish he had brought a little better game to the table. His attire says it all - not bad, but generally apathetic about the presentation.
Zaijiang Yu who, are you? It can be quite unnerving being the center of attention. And unfortunately, I’m sure Ryan has “your expectation” in him, but one uhm can roll into another and etc. especially in modern culture where the majority do not want to see others do well(scarcity mindset), if you let it in you’re toast. Please though do upload your Ted talk. No he is not a traditional tried and true stoic, by any means. Not disagreeing.
That's curious. I wonder why the speaker felt it important to put "pictures" of his copies of "Meditations" into his presentation. Does he think the audience doesn't believe him? If so, why would showing pictures of worn copies of the book convince them? Clearly he's hiding something. Just look at those beady eyes. 🤪 /s All kidding aside, that does seem odd to me that he felt a need to show pictures of your old books. Maybe it's just me. 😉✌
Ok. This dude is actually not that impressive. I personally never heard of him and I am glad. I really think he is very lost when it comes to what is real in life and what is not. Nothing but pure B. S. And I have studied philosophy for some 30 years.
guys like you Mark are hilarious.. good for you.. you have studied 30 years of philosophy. Who gives a shit?!? We've never heard of you either. You are the pure definition of a Troll. Go write a book, post a video.. get invited to speak at a conference...... let us all see you in all your glory. We will judge you and the guy above against each other... i can wager a bet that this dude wins every time because you won't do anything besides chirp in comment sections. keep your shitty negativity to yourself.
You will always get someone who wants to drag a positive message down. If you think it is BS why share that opinion with others? What you spew will become your reality on a daily basis. A positive comment will always serve you better in the long run, if only people can see this.
The fact that people are complaining about the sound quality that they cannot control on a video about stoicism is amazing to me.
lol
🤣🤣🤣
Exactly
Its not even really that bad. The reverb is the reason it sounds this way. I do, however, wonder how short the video would be if he took out all the “um”s and repetitive words/sentences. ❤️

I'm glad the audio sucks. Now I'l appreciate all other you tube videos and not take sound quality for granted.
Stoicism
Only the ego wants good audio
Just listen to it stoically..
Made my day!
You definitely got the core message of this Tedtalk haha, good one ^^

I needed this talk 9 years ago but I'm glad it has found me now
I come to this video from time to time. really helps me breath with things feel more painful than they need to be
Good to hear this kind of lectures...
Good talk. Shame about the sound quality, but the practical examples are a great Stoic inspiration.
An opportunity to learn to pay attention to the message not the messenger/voice. ;)
Great book daily stoic and obstacle is the way...love the talk

absolutely read the meditations of Marcus Aurelius...really awesome

1. Use high-quality stereo headphones.
2. Get high.
3. Enjoy those acoustics.
Thanks so much life changing message 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙌🏿
Wonderful talk! Thanks Ryan!!!!

Enjoy! :)
Great message, Ryan.

Never Complain about the Audio - Marcus Aurelius Just Embraced the moment and Enjoy Ryan holiday Talk
Perfect 🙏🏿🙏🏿
Great talk! I'm making my way through the "perception" part of his book right now~
Thanks to a lack of friends at my university, I've taken learning social skills seriously for the first time in my life. When I've become a master of it, I will become so much more powerful and live a so much more fulfilling life than I ever did before.
He looked anxious and flustered, at least that´s how it appeared. Anyways, always good to listen to stoicism.
This is great thank you.
I noticed on the comments, yes, the audio sucks, but I bet you made a better effort in trying to listen and paying more attention to te Talk ;) hence "The obstacle is the way"
Just learned about Ryan Holiday books a little while ago, and been researching on them. Looking forward to start reading their books.
Brilliantly said.
you can fix the audio very easily by running a VST plugin called "de-verb"

wow the audio sucks but a great lesson
+Usman M I do live event streaming and I can not believe this production. Very amateurish.
Ryan probably did this on purpose to create an opportunity to learn to pay attention to the message not the messenger/voice. ;) Testing listeners..

Want better audio ? Listen in mono (left only).
well done thanks for sharing
Brilliant !
stoicism is the philosophical root of cognitive behavioral therapy. much of it comes straight from Epictetus.
True dat.
Great talk!

Marcus Aurelius would tell this marketing dork to do something real.
I, um, had, um, to, um, stop, um, listening, um.
To make the audio bearable, remove your right earphone.
Thanks
Good Stuff!
Ok but where did he get his three books? I can't find the Hays paperback anywhere
I like the speaker. What I did not like was that the speech is concerned most of the time with elaborating examples.
Any place I can read the transcript ? The audio is not that good :(
the audio quality is really sucks. WHY did you upload such awful stereo? It could be better with mono sound
What stands in the way becomes the way, or A great message will not impede the intension to complain in the comment field ;-)
another historical figure who used being a prisoner in aushwitz to overcome and help other overcome: victor frankl, his book 'in serach of self', recommended.
I so agree with you! I really got alot from reading this incredible book, it's really a deep thought provoking!
I the believe the book is called, In Search of Meaning. I will find my copy!
@@antoinettafisher5390 it's been a lot of years - you're right about the title.
Stoicism is virtually like a precursor of Neuro Linguistics Programming
You mean NLP is a cheap facsimile of Stoicism?
I've been listening to your M. Erickson recordings for a while. nice seeing you here lol
NLP is a poorly thought through, scientifically rebuked pile of cultist nonsense.
I didn't really care for Aurelius. As a young man, Epictetus and Seneca spoke more deeply to me.
The low quality audio and those loud “Ums” keep distracting me from a great message.
Gonçalo Morais lmao
dude, wtf is going on with the sound ? can not listen to this, echo boy is way to irritating
An opportunity to learn to pay attention to the message not the messenger/voice. ;)
How is the audio even ALLOWED to be this bad?
Sound quality is awful, makes it hard to appreciate.
Echo! echo !

Great ideas, but this is 12 minutes longer than it needed to be...
Of course we read good books again and again, but why buy the same book again and again? Dude, get a kindle.
bad audio,cant raise volume enough
Way too hard to listen to with headphones
Audio echos
Very bad sound quality

Audio is terrible

Depends on the STOICISM philosophy, I’m disappointed because of my expectations. I definitely didn’t expect so many “Hmmmm”s . My fault .
