    The fact that people are complaining about the sound quality that they cannot control on a video about stoicism is amazing to me.

      Its not even really that bad. The reverb is the reason it sounds this way. I do, however, wonder how short the video would be if he took out all the “um”s and repetitive words/sentences. ❤️

    The real gem in the positive stoic outlook, which can't be missed, is that these people he describes know something those around them didn't. In the moment, their vision was grander. They saw the obstacle before it occurred and knew it would not cripple them. They weren't caught by surprise when the obstacle occurred AND they didn't naturally operate in a reactive way. Most people walk through life moaning what has happened to them and never really have a true vision for what their life could be .. something to be all in on. So their state is always reactive.

  • @Better_Call_Bulba-Saur
    @Better_Call_Bulba-Saur 2 роки тому +5

    This "Um" guy really made himself proof that the obstacle is the way. If you watch his videos now, there's a really significant improvement with how he speaks.

  • @Abu7929

    I concieve stoicism differently. Where he says that we can turn 'bad' things into good, I don't concede that 'bad" exists. For me, all value is relative, events just 'are'; they're not in need of conversion from one state to another if they're intuitively concieved as perfect. Remember, 'A sage is impervious to misfortune'.

    Thanks to my immense hatred of reading books, I learnt how to survive at a university without having to read. I just simply record the lessons and learn only that information; when the teachers have only 90 minutes to speak about a subject, what are they then going to talk about? The most important parts of that subject of course.
    Now I can crush the same knowledge as other students, but several times faster. I can study, while still having a balanced life, unlike them, who never struggled like I did.

    If Rockefeller is one of the main examples and models of stoic optimism, I'd say that this philosophy can be just as dangerous as it can be useful. Rockefeller was Machiavellian beyond belief. Stoic optimism is great if it is coupled with pure and good intentions and actions. Without these, not so much.

    • @greendeane1
      @greendeane1 8 років тому +6

      +rahimick5 I think you might know Rockefeller but not much about Stoicism.

    • @rahimick5
      @rahimick5 8 років тому +1

      +Green Deane There is truth in that. I don't really know a lot about stoicism (besides what this guy is saying and what I've heard from a couple of others). I was more commenting on his use of Rockefeller as an example. So my point stands if in fact Rockefeller did employ stoicism how this guy is saying.

    • @EwingAmaterasu
      @EwingAmaterasu 8 років тому +7

      +rahimick5 Completley agree, the stoics themselves spoke of a life guided by love for neighbor. Controlling your emotions and passions for your own sake will not give you happiness if you do not do good to others. Loving yourself, as a way to live according to nature, but love to others as well, wishing them to live according to nature as well. Doing good to others.

    • @silasbrookschannel
      @silasbrookschannel 6 років тому

      rahimick5 I think he is employing a specific part of Rockefeller’s actions to as an example of a specific aspect of stoicism, namely not letting obstacles and difficulties cause one unnecessary emotion distress. I don’t think he (or an stoic) would say that Rockefeller was a stoic in virtue, but that this is weekly a example of a specific tenant that he used in the instances he mentioned.

    This observation may seem a little esoteric but electric current will not flow unless there is a load otherwise it is nothing more than a potential. Which in some way to me validates the statement via the laws of electricity/nature that the obstacle is the way. We choose to do these things not because they are easy but because they are hard.

    When I think of Stoicism I think more about the practice of negative visualization. That doesn't sound quite optimistic does it? The idea as I understand it is to visualize a negative outcome for a coming event or day and think about how you will deal with it or be prepared for anything other than a positive outcome. This way you are not surprised or caught too off guard by anything. This doesn't mean you load all you car repair tools into your car in case you break down on the way to work or pack 3 changes of clothes everywhere you go. I see it as an exercise in handling stress and life's situations and not have a complete meltdown when everything doesn't go perfectly. It is intended to be an exercise with a positive result for dealing with life but the term " negative visualization " would have you thinking Stoicism is anything but positive.

    I'm not sure why I avoid Ryan Holiday ? He seems to be more about self help then about stoicism . He seems more about helping people improve themselves and stoicism is his tool and example for that . I look for ancient Greek philosophy he is not about that . Totally respect what he is doing though. Just not my cup of tea at this exact moment.

    • @taylorstone8048
      @taylorstone8048 4 роки тому +3

      I’m curious as to what Greek philosophy you’re referring to/looked into? His main focus is Stoicism, which by at least my brief study of, pertains to the self and how to interact with circumstances outside of your control. It’s almost by definition, a philosophy of self help. It’s a philosophy rooted in morality and ethical behaviors that must start with you and yourself. Just my two cents but with respect ✌️

      Taylor Stone ive tend to gone down several different paths that link up with stoicism, neo stoicism which is found in Catholic teachings ( not Catholic) cognitive therapy for therapy ( im not into therapy just it's application ), and Seneca , as Seneca has the largest volumes of reading material. I avoid Marcus aurelius as i understand why now he wanted his books burned.

If so, why would showing pictures of worn copies of the book convince them? Clearly he's hiding something. Just look at those beady eyes. 🤪 /s

      You will always get someone who wants to drag a positive message down. If you think it is BS why share that opinion with others? What you spew will become your reality on a daily basis. A positive comment will always serve you better in the long run, if only people can see this.
