  • It can be hard to figure out how much to press on the strings; how much to use your thumb; how heavy to make your arm. Find out how to balance all those ideas here. #cello #celloteacher

Oh my god, thank you so much. I was the person who asked this ❤😊. Such a great explanation!

Goodness this is very relevant for me right now. I am 66, having played cello in high school and some through college, put it down and focused on folk instruments and come back to the cello as a pandemic project which morphed into a empty nester project studying diligently for this past 3 years. I have relayed on a small piece of tape on the back of my cello neck for my thumb placement. However this is not serving me well as it seems my thumb wants to move from directly behind the second finger in different times ( a more sensitive vibrato, slightly different placement when playing say F to G / 2 to 4 finger better intonation etc) I often decide to take the tape off, only to get frustrated and put it back on ( then off then on again) I know this is a crutch but not sure how to proceed. I am in Suzuki book 6-7 right now. Any suggestions would be much appreciated TY

Aha, yes if you are advanced enough for that much shifting and vibrato, your thumb needs a different plan. I'll make a video that discusses the stages of left hand development as it relates to the thumb.
