If you like my little chord melody at the beginning. Here's the transcription! Don't forget to also check out my visualization book (link in description) www.soundslice.com/slices/T-5wc/
Hi Denis, I purchased your visualization book, but think I made a mistake. It seems too easy for me. I was expecting something more advanced. I seem to know the book’s contents already. I wish there was a way to avoid making such purchasing errors
This was a GREAT video. I consider myself to be an advanced guitarist, when it comes to technique, in rock jazz, blues, but I will have only been into and playing Gypsy jazz for 3 yrs now, and if I would have a had a teacher like you Dennis when I started learning just "jazz," what took me many years to do on my own, as you would say, ORGANICALLY, ( which is what I guess I did ) would have taken me 2 yrs to do. All the things you're talking about are the questions I would ask myself. I mean my teacher NEVER told me about WHY the standards always had different chords? This complicated the F^&k out of me in the beginning, and I had to piece together, Melody, harmony, by painstakingly listening to recordings, over n over again. And the other teacher had me thinking that I had to play certain scales, with certain chords, I didn't last long with him either, but NONE never mentioned chord tones, passing notes, etc... It was only in the 80's with the dawn of instructional videos that I started to understand jazz really, and if it wasn't for them, I would have been stuck with the books, scales and modes, In The Beginning, # 1-Improvising jazz by Jerry Coker, # 2- Jazz and popular guitar, and # 3 Elementary rudiments of music, and #4 Ted greens Chord Chemistry ( that book was horrible for me ). Books 1 & 2 at least gave me some theory. Point I'm making is ANYONE can learn today EXTREMELY fast if they want to, especially with people like you out there, AND, if they study with a guy like YOU, and they want a career as a player, or educator, YOU have ALL the CONNECTIONS that will enable them to REALLy connect to the Gypsy Jazz community. Dennis, you yourself have never said this because you're a modest guy, so I will say it for you!!! Great Stuff!!!
Thank you, Denis! Great stuff. I know that this is the truth, because so many great players have said to learn songs as many as you can, and that will lead to the greatest results.
yesss - I think you got me with this one. I have been realizing for years that with many songs that I know regarding rhythm chords I still have difficulties deriving impro lines that properly outline the chords and also comping progressions. To me it feels like somehow I'm missing out on implementing the link between chords and soloing in my subconscience by something that is lacking in my method to approach songs. I think this video might be a very helpful nudge to adress that. I will definitely try to work on chord-soloing quite a bit. I have a feeling this might be very helpful! Thanks for your continuous effort, Denis !! 👍
Very helpful advice sir 👍🏽 It has eminent integrity because I've heard/read/seen it from many of the greats. Your video is especially useful to musicians like myself, who are intermediate to advanced players in other genres like classical, rock, country, etc. We tend to learn jazz backwards! Jumping in to soloing, instead of learning melodies & the basic harmonies! Lesson learned: be humble, start with the basics, as you've demonstrated here 👍🏽🙏🏽💖 thank you
Beautifully played the chord melody @ the start of the video I'll be heading over to sound slice to learn. Since I started learning more melody with my chords , actual tunes, my guitar playing has improved. Great lesson thanks for sharing Denis 👍👌🇬🇧🎸🎶🎶🎶
Salut Denis, je me suis cassé le petit doigt de la main droite (impossible de gratter les cordes donc) t'as des idées de trucs à faire pour continuer à progresser malgré ca ? merci pour la vidéo.
