Really digging on that color and fade, I really couldn't figure why the blade wasn't deployed as a dipping handle but who who cares, live and learn. The scales are too cool.

I know this is four years ago, but I just glad this exact dye job on my new Native 5 Salt Magnacut and it turned out amazing. I used the racing red synthetic Rit Dye and it worked perfectly. I did it exactly like you did in the video and I’m so happy. Mine wasn’t a seconds so I was a little nervous, but it worked flawlessly. Thank you 🙏

Save the vinegar for the French fries. It's not actually needed. I fell for that idea that it helps until I didn't have any vinegar and tried dying my scales in just dye and water. Honestly made zero difference

I just picked up 4 knives from the Spyderco Factory Seconds sale, 3 of which are gray Maxamet.
I've never dyed scales before but I'm interested in doing something with the gray on those. The Maxamets are: PM, Para 3, & Native 5. I also might want to patina but blade like you did with your Manix 2 Maxamet.
The 4th knife I got is a camo Para 3, which I'd also be interested in dyeing.

    • @inkiron3907

Someone else commented that could have opened the knife before doing this dunk into the dye. For LC200N it wasn’t a problem, but you should consider it for the M4! Tape up the edge so you don’t get cut. The steam is enough to deal with without a live edge in your hand

Personally I would have just took the scales off ransom wire through there and it would have been way more easier and you can prevent rust and other damage to your bearings or if there's a Spyderco sometimes they use spots for bronze washers which you don't want to ruin the elasticity on that on those❤

Can it be done with food dye as well?
Edit: it sort of works. I had a knife with dark green micarta scales. I had previously sketched a pattern into it with marker which had stayed so I put them in bleach before trying. Then I boiled water, put in a little vinegar, put in food coloring, and left the knife scales in. I definitely didn't leave them in long enough as they are faded but it definitely has a distinct color change(except the areas I had marked on, the marker wouldn't come off) overall if you want single color on micarta food coloring DOES work, it'll look similar to the way micarta always looks with a slightly faded pattern. I think it's pretty cool even though mine doesn't look at all professional
