The very last step that everyone misses is you have to spray the parts off with acetone...that reddish/blue/purple pen ink color is mucky dye that settles on the surface, rinse it off good with acetone and it will look factory made clean.
@@optimafootworks9554 Yes, the dye soaks into the plastic coloring it and then mucky dye sits on the surface looking like it was colored on with a sharpie. I've done several nylon plastics and comes out looking factory made when rinsing in fresh acetone.
This worked! Thank you! Although, I used a thick ziplock bag and SOUS VIDE to maintain 185 degrees F for like 10mins and that was enough for my very small project.
A little dish soap in the solution helps. Wash the parts in hot soapy water first then straight in the solution for 15 minutes or whatever time you're using. After rinsing and cooling you can run the process again. Soapy water preheat then another run through the solution. The second or occasionally third run really improved the brightness of the parts. The Rit synthetic graphite dye can improve the color when added to the black. Great video, sure beats painting plastic. 5% x 13oz = 6.5oz acetone. i found 10% works well for chainsaw plastics.
Awesome vid I’ve got a 1980 Honda xl125s enduro bike and my front fender and my air filter cover are pretty sun-dyed appreciate all the hard work in your vids to make us understand it better, keep up the great work!
Just bought a Acerbis natural colored 5.3 gallon gas tank to dye yellow for my DR650. Couldn't find anybody talking about chemical ratios, so thanks for the info. I'm thinking it might be a 24 hour dye job using a garbage can, but hopefully matches up really well with the rest of the OEM yellow plastics.

I think the acetone made it come out the way it did. I also think if you were a little more generous with the RIT it wouldve came out a deeper black. But definitely a good video very informative.👍 You always challenge your self with complicated tasks for these dirt bikes, i love to watch.
I hope you do understand that by heating the solution up to 200F you have exceeded the boiling point of acetone (133F) so by the time your solution has gotten up to temp, most of the acetone is in your room, not in the solution…
I did this without acetone and my results where great, part has been died for about a year and is in the engine bay of my car, i just used powdered rite dye and used all of it and let the part soak for about 2 hours.
@@genysmenrunner1677 I used powder in very hot water. Longer it soaks the dark and deeper the dye will soak in. To this day the part is still pitch black!

About to restore an 85 Honda Elite 150 and change the blue plastics to black. Going with the ruby red color scheme over silver it will stand out better. This will help with the non painted blue panels.
Hi! Thanks for the great video! I'm wondering if the colour still keeps the same strength a couple of years after use? Especially interesting since it gets in so much contact with sun, rain, cold and so on. I would love to know what you think! Thanks in advance! Martina from Sweden =)
Im totally doing this! I cant find black plastics for my kdx200 and paint chips off so fast. I will have to do this just on a much bigger scale for maybe even my gas tank but definitely the fenders and number plate are getting dyed. Hey Cam! Great idea on the dye. I do have a comment/suggestion though. Wouldn't it make more sense to sandblast all the plastics with a fine media to score the surface so the dye could soak in?
Also, use distilled/deionized water....It makes all the difference by naturally being more acidic it can break down the dye better absorb/ penetrate deeping.
Damn that turned out good. I’ve always wondered if Bed Liner would adhere to plastic as well as dye. But it would be a rough texture, not smooth like this. Good job!
I know this video is super old and probably won't get a response to my comment - but I have a bunch of 2' sticks of white PVC pipe. Could I simply add them to a large rubbermaid bin, add water to cover them and like maybe 2 bottles of dye and let them sit for a day or so to color them black? I wouldn't really have a way to heat 20 gallons of the solution with acetone so I was hoping the dye would work with just the water and more time?
If you use yellow dye, it pulls all of the plastics away from the purple-ish spectrum. So dye yellow, rinse off, then dye black. Ol lacrosse techniques ftw
I'm guessing it's possible to just add some of the yellow dye to the black, since they work the same way... I've done this before when using RIT dye / dyemore on clothes ^-^ Just be sure it's mixed properly beforehand!

So is it absolutely necessary to boil the mixture to 200 degrees? You said at the end that you left the radiator louvres over night, I assume you didn't heat them and stay up watching them? Do you think you would get the same results by just mixing a cold mixture with 10% acetone and leaving it at room temperature for 24 hours? Just trying to avoid the fumes or buying an electric stove. Thanks!
I have a 2019 tacoma and was trying to use this stuff to dye my interior trim pieces that are a light grey color and the dye would not even set into it and would just bead right off or run off it any suggestions? I’m thinking the plastic is still smooth and kinda silky smooth?
My radiator guards dont want to accept the dye. They just look slightly purple. Other parts nice and black after 15 minutes but the guards have been in there all day with quite a bit of acetone.
I dyed my white plastic yesterday using your method. I let them sit in the mixture for 1 1/2 hours. They turned dark brown. Should do any other dye to reach black or am I wasting my time?
Forgive me if this has been asked already but what's up with the type of plastic? I know PP plastic is unaffected by acetone but I assume plastics that will be damaged by acetone you can't use this method BUT can you substitute acetone with a different solvent?
Thanks for the how to! I'm currently working on my 76 El Camino and wanted to re-dye the key covers to be a more fitting color than black or really harsh blue, hopefully this works :D (if not I'm only out 4 bucks xD)
