  • I've had many, many requests to try out the Philips Norelco One Blade electric razor, so I decided to buy one and give it a try. In this video, I put it head to head against a safety razor that won't break the bank, the Parker 99r. Which one comes out on top? Am I comparing apples to oranges? Let's shave and see...

The one blade is designed for people with sensitive skin. It goes almost as close as any razor goes but without scraping your skin. Been a godsend for me with Eczema.

Depends on the kind of sensitivity it seems. I also have sensitive skin and used to get a lot of ingrown hairs and razor burn before shaving with a safety razor. And I also have the one blade here for when don’t have the time to shower before a shave or just don’t want to shave that day. After using it, my skin feels extremely raw, because I have to go over multiple times and my facial hair is not really thin and easy to cut. But it leaves behind an okay finish without having to fear any ingrown hair.

And I hated shaving with a cartridge razor now I'm shaving with a safety razor just love it. Even though the One Blade doesn't shave as closely, it might meet the needs of someone like me. I have had mine for about three months and I shave maybe twice a week. I’ve personally invested heavily financially and practically in shaving. Here’s what I’ve found based on years of experience looking for shave I want. (I want the smoothest quick shave without getting ingrown hairs or irritation.)
    1) Annually, with daily shaving, the Oneblade will cost the same as buying the Braun Series 9 with cleaning cartridges replacing the cleaning cartridge solution every 19 cycles (I took over two weeks to count exactly how many cycles until the light turns on.)
    2) The Philips Norelco OneBlade doesn’t provide the closest shave when “close” is defined by the length of hair protruding from the skin. However, “smoothness” I have found the OneBlade can provide (with extra work) a shave nearly as smooth as a Double Edge Safety Razor. This is all from my experience, not the opinions of others.
    3) Using Leftric Shave or another electric pre-shave will make this even smoother.
If your goal is the closest shave, the Gillette Fusion 5 should be the winner because it will cut under the skin, but that’s a problem. Cutting under the skin produces ingrown hairs. Don’t get me wrong, the experience of taking a warm shower followed by shaving against the grain with a new Gillette Fusion 5 ProGlide using the Gillette Fusion ProGlide Sensitive 2 in 1 Shave Gel is AMAZING. (Assuming you didn’t break out in ingrowns the next day.) But you know, like I do, that those sharp, amazing shave experiences don’t last very long on those blades.
In my experience, the way to get an oil-covered baby butt dish soap lathered slip and slide smooth shave is using a double-edge safety razor. The best part is you don’t get breakouts. It takes time to learn, but I go against the grain everywhere on my face (except for my adam’s apple) every time I shave and am never disappointed by blade performance. Double edge safety razors are much sharper, profoundly cheaper, and easy to learn.

Just bought one for my covid beard a few hours ago. Came back to comment. And made some notes to clear some stuff up.
I highly recommend long, slow, gentle strokes. And you can pretty much shave as fast as you would with an electric shaver.
Use the trimmer side is what I use for the upper lip and getting over the nooks and crannies.
The shave is closer than what you would get with a brand new multi blade razor, you would have to use a safety or straight razor, and most Dermatologist advise against shaving like that these days. And i wouldn't unless you have a good routine like powder, aftershave, astringent, antiseptic and moisturizer.
I find it pretty amazing cause sometimes i nick my top lip, under the nose and the edges of my lip sometimes. Plus I have the random pimple.
But this thing sharp and accurate im not scared to shave over a wound or pimple, i can even put this thing under my chin and it will leave behind a impression of the one blade.
To clear up some stuff the run time is over 1 hour and the charge time is only 4 hrs. You can leave it charging after your done. But if you;re traveling this thing can basically run a whole month ( or 2 weeks), before charging. Replacement blades cost like 10 bucks and you only need a new one 4-6 months and if you dont use it everyday prob longer. I've heard this thing stays pretty sharp and doesn't dull like how a traditional razor dulls form the microscopic rebound force from hairs. It comes with 3 combs so this is probably super easy to trim your beard and get the old ends off. You could probably use it for body hair too.
Prices as of Dec 2020 are $29 from Walmart target and amazon and i got mine form walmart with a $3 replacement plan
The shave is pretty close like i said, but when I but antiseptic and astringent on today i didn't feel any burn. And it left my pimple on my chin perfectly unharmed. I'm excited to learn about this thing, cause its stupid convenient and cheap compared to high-end electric shaver. Also top tip keep your razor and blades dry to prevent corrosion, not sure about the oneblade but you should prob do the same.

For what it's worth, I bought a Oneblade a year ago and I'm still on the original head. It doesn't cut as close as any wet shaving method (which they tell you upfront in the instructions) but it's great if you grow out your beard and keep it trimmed or shave it off every so often, ideally you'd shave your beard off with the Oneblade and then follow up with a Cart Razor or Safety Razor for a BBS shave. I got mine on sale for about 40 Canadian Pesos and 10 bucks store credit, at that point I was fed up with Cart Razors and hadn't really heard about Safety Razors so this was my way of avoiding razor burn. Since I got my Rockwell however I haven't really used the Oneblade, because having to wear a mask forced me to be clean shaven.

Excellent review! I switched to safety razors recently. I’ve been using disposable triple blades and electric Norelco triple head circular razors for years. The safety razor gives me a barber shop close shave and now I look forward to a nice, slow, zen-like experience for my daily “me time” shave. There’s something nice and relaxing about prepping your skin, lathering up and taking your time and enjoying a couple of nice “pure” shaves with a DE blade, and finishing with a post shave balm. No frills or fancy multiple edge blades. Just you and a single edge of a blade, delicately taking off a layer of daily beard growth an inch at a time, and feeling just how smooth that shave is, not just after, but how it lasts for most of the day. Its nice to discover a new way to enjoy a daily ritual that I’ve been doing all these years and have only recently begun to really appreciate.

Use what works for you, but a well designed razor head, with good sharp blades, and used at the proper angles should have none of those issues. Often times I've had a friend raise the same complaints a quick inspection of their kit reveals that blade exposure is lopsided or asymmetrical (whether due to poor head design or poor blade quality) or they are using really terrible cheap blades.Other times it could be that they are pressing too hard (a well designed razor and sharp blade requires no more than a light touch) or they are not keeping the angles as they go around the face (both habits likely formed through cartridge razor usage). For me a DE-SR is the fastest route to a smooth shave without irritation, but that's with everything dialled in to my liking.

I use both - the OneBlade to start with dry, and then a final round with the safety razor (prefer Astra blades). That leaves me with a smooth skin without any irritations. I usually only shave once a week though.

Time has come, so i decided to start shaving. I found the One Blade and was all hyped about it, but when i got to the store to buy it, i wanted to get extra cartridges and when i saw the price i could not believe it. It costs 14 usd/piece here, so i was dissappointed, then by blind luck i saw a Wilkinson Sword Classic safety razor bundle wich had the safety razor, 5 blades, soap, and a brush, I did not think twice because the kit costs about half the ammount of the OneBlade, and is cheaper in the long run. Yeah, this is how i got into shaving. :D

Great informative video thanks. Just one thing I noticed is that you do small strokes going over the same area a number of times, this is very bad for the skin. You should use long strokes starting from the top of the ear down to the neck, the next stroke will be parallel to the 1st so that the blade only touches any part of the skin once. If necessary you could follow with a second stroke but no more.

I've used both, you cannot beat the old school safety Razor (though, I don't use the guard in 33 years of use) and single double edge blades, I use Wilkinson, as I've tried nearly all blades from all over the world just to see which were sharpest, Wilkinson Sword are the best.
The one blade works, it's for those who don't mind the many sweeps you have to use for it to work, it does do the job but not close enough for my skin.
A great video and good to include the costs too, so people can make an informed decision!

Tried mine out before I watched your video. I have to agree. Not a totally baby smooth shave, but I also had a couple weeks growth. It shaved much quicker than I thought it would. The instructions also suggest to use long strokes & not short, choppy ones. I didn't notice a difference either way personally. I also didn't notice a difference, or much, in going with or against the beard growth. I was overall impressed with it. Rating it from 1-10, I think I'd give it an 8.5. IF the cartridges weren't so pricey, it would probably get another point to 9.5. Not a bad shave tho! Fantastic Size & makes great for traveling.

I'm 25, decided to splash on a OneBlade pro and I'm looking forward to it! I don't shave every day, only when I shower, and can leave it for about 5-7 days before I start to dislike the look. But sometimes I get lazy and leave it about 2 weeks and shaving with a trimmer to get it easy to shave with a razor is a pain, messy, needs to be charged often. With my Oneblade I'll keep it in the bathroom and the pro lasts 90 minutes and has battery level shown, should last a good while without a charge as long as it doesn't drain much on idle.
Course though it'll be good for body hair too and think I might grow my beard out and get one of those trendy pretty much bald back and sides cuts. Which with a 3 mirror my OneBlade could help me keep the back and sides short and be useful for cleaning up a beardline too. Seems useful for everything!

So my brother bought me the Philips One Blade, and I will say right now it is NOT a replacement for traditional blades. Maybe its just that I have more than average thicker hair, but the hair on my chin are really thick and in that area alone using it daily, it doesn't cut properly and it causes bumps due to irritation. Additionally, the jawline and under the jaw is extremely hard for the One Blade to catch the hairs and cut them when they're especially short after shaving the day prior. What I've decided to do is when I grow my hair out for a few days on my off days (Current Military), Ill use the OneBlade first because I noticed that the slightly longer hairs catch and cut properly with the oneblade and then I finish it off the Van Der Hagen Safety Razor. The safety Razor is freaking smoothest shave ever.

the oneblade is remarkable from a marketing perspective, it essentially gets the user to subscribe to short lasting and expensive propriety blades. a foil shaver or the philips multigroom series are much more competitive devices than the oneblade. the multigroom also comes with various useful attachments including a noise hair trimmer, foil shaver, and various gaurds for the body, hair and beard.

After having a huge debate with myself, decided to give OneBlade a try. I just tried it and honestly It was the best shave EVER after trying numerous trimmers and shavers. I need to emphasize that using one blade with the foam is a must in my opinion(makes the process much FASTER and SMOOTHER), otherwise, I couldn’t find it useful for dry shaving. But that’s my personal preference and might be different for someone else. As far as closeness of the shave, it’s pretty similar to electric razors that I used before and I think it’s because I used it with foam. I just hope this piece lasts and the blades don’t get dull after just a couple of uses.
    Hope this is helpful,
    Good Luck!

Hello. I was offered a Philips OneBlade a while back, and I enjoyed it better than my older dry foil electric razor or my cartridge razor. But it didn't trigger much joy anyway and shaving was still one of these everyday chores. And with cheeks still rough I never saw a point in extensive after-shave care. The game changed when I re-discovered DE safety razors : better shaves, and they turn a chore into a pleasure-ritual that still fits in a limited time-slot. I didn't try a straight-razor yet, but as of now, IMO there's no shaving like DE shaving and I'm horrified this method was ever replaced with cartridge or electric razors.

I hated the Philips AquaTouch. It just gave me blisters and white flaky skin all over my face. I was back to electric trimming or an occasional shave with a cartridge/cut-throat razor. But, I have been using the Philips OneBlade for more than two years now and I think it gives a really good smooth shave! Of course, it is quite cheap as well (~INR 1500) and the blades can be changed. I need to change blades not more than 3-4 times a year.
