    On a C harp, an overblow on hole 3 can give a good b-note "leading tone effect" because it can be pushed closer to the c-note and reduce the space of the half-step (as in Pablo Casal's "expressive intonation"). Difficult. A little easier is the blow bend on hole 7 to drop the pitch of the c-note. Drawing on hole 7 to get the factory b-note gives a poor "leading tone effect" note... The b-note on the C harp is made to be closer to pure (just) intonation of a chord with the fundamental as the g-note for cross harp. (This is for the advanced player/thinker)... just saying.

      bullshit explanation and "solution" for a non existent problem... All overbends tends to be a bit too flat, so why adding this difficulty when bending accurately the number 3 to get that note? I know how to play, I've been trying almost everything tp solve some issues, but what you're proposing is just another false solution to an already solved problem. During my first years of harmonica I've been confused and wasting a precious time on these so called theory on harmonica

      another take on the problem recognizes that the f-note on a c-harp (as Marine
      band types are currently tuned) is flat compared to the f-note on a f-harp -- or the f on a piano.... On a c-harp the f-note works well for the 7th (the "septimal seventh") of a G7, but as a subdominant note in a phrase in the key of c, it is not too good. I did mention the "expressive intonation" of Pablo Casals. Are you familiar with his ideas on intonation? A rose is a rose is a rose, but c is not always 261.63.

      There is NO reason to overblow hole 3. The result would be the same note as blow 4.

      @@ChromaticHarp look into equal temperament, how the blues harp is tuned, a là Hohner, and why the B in hole 3 -- on C harp -- is flat to the piano's B. That note in the key of C, if conceived (not as the third of the V chord, but) as part of a short run ending on the tonic, should be sharp to what is the B reed as tuned on the harp... hence, overblow can hit it. Violin players know what I am talking about.

    I love the way she talks about teaching as a way to help others communicate, and I can't help noting that teaching also helps us to fine tune our own "communication skills" in the process. As we help others to improve, we also improve ourselves.

    How/why to overblows happen? They result from sympathetic vibration with vowel formants.

    Thanks for this, Liam and Christelle! A very important but simple question: Can overblows be done on an out-of-the-box Hohner Blues Harp or does it have to be adjusted?

      They can be done, it's just much more difficult. You can make it much easier by adjusting but in theory you can do it on a Blues Harp out of the box. Thanks for asking! Cheers, Liam

      Impossible. Without in-depth customizing, you won't get anything you can use.
