Buckling down to learn tongue blocking has been the best thing I’ve done with harp. It took a solid 6 months of playing 100% TB to become fairly proficient with the various iterations of it. I now TB everything except 10 blow bend and OB/OD. I am asked every time I post a video, “How do you get that thick tone acoustically?”… I tell them it’s all TB technique, and then most of them scoff and say they don’t need to TB 🤦‍♂️

Wow, what a great interview. I have been working hard at learning to Tongue Block. Dennis answered some of my questions here by telling how he Tongue Blocks On holes 1 to 4. So I will be working on tongue switching for one thing. Thank you both for this great interview.

You're welcome Tony. Dennis is such a nice guy, he was really generous with his time and it was an honour to meet him (if only via Skype!)

Dennis is awesome, not just a great diatonic player but also a fantastic chromatic blues player. He has a brilliant stage persona/presence and is a real credit to our instrument. I wish he was UK based!!

Funny I just found Big River harps in Eb and F# I forgot I had. I got both probably 20 years ago at a Music Go Round in Louisville. They were like half off. I think about 12 bucks each.

Don’t give up. The way that I learned to TB, was to take a song I could already play lip-pursed, and start playing it using TB only. It does take some time to find what works for you, but it’s 100% worth learning how to do. Nothing else comes close to emulating the dynamics and texture that can be achieved by TB.

I've always wanted to know this, did James Cotton tongue block? To me, it doesn't sound like it, but I just don't know.
