So supper late comment. But I wanted to offer perspective as a Jewish person that's had to deal with blood libel shit.
For anyone who doesn't know the most common basic blood libel teachings I've come across is the idea that Jewish people would steal Christian babies and use their blood to make madza (a traditional and ironically white Jewish flat bread). That is the specific story that someone I knew as a teenager was taught by their church here in America. And this was about 20 years ago.
People don't realize how insidious antisemitism is even people that suffer other forms of racism. I want to make it clear that I am not saying being Jewish is harder than being a person of color. For white Jews it just isn't, our whiteness insulates us from a lot (also please keep in mind that there are plenty of Jews that aren't white, entire ethnicities in fact). Christian supremacy is a very real thing that goes hand in hand with white supremacy. If you find one you'll find the other.
In the modern day the blood libel has been used by fridge groups such as Quinon to use the existing antisemitic biases people have. They just dress it up in "Democrats making blood sacrifices and extracting made up chemicals from children's blood" garb to suit their purposes. Anytime you hear conservative or alt-right figure heads talk about Globalists, Secret Cabals, Shadowy people behind the scenes, the Elites or Global Elites they're talking about Jews. We're literally the original "Lizard people wearing human skin to fool everyone" which comes from the very old Christian belief that we were literal demons.
Basically she definitely has some deep nasty ideas about Jewish people and very likely other races of peopme too.
I do give people the benefit of the doubt a lot. We've all grown up in Christian white supremacy and it'll bleed through even when we don't mean it to. But in my experience something that pointed is to some degree intentional and it needs to be called out.

very well said. the conversations surrounding racial oppression are uncomfortable and I get that and that's why you'll notice a lot of people get defensive or try to say that POC are playing victims but at the end of the day, we all suffer from the patriarchal system, whether it manifests itself financially or mentally or legally. but you also have people who are arguing in bad faith on purpose to get a rise out of people and then say, look they are triggered or blowing this out of proportion. those people are the worst. anyway, I hope these people keep getting called out and "canceled" every time they double down on their bad behavior.

As a non-Jewish person who didn't know about the blood libel stereotype, I think one particularly terrible thing about using it is that it exposes young readers to really harmful antisemitism that a lot of them might not even know they're ingesting. Thank you (and Rachel) for bringing attention to something harmful I didn't even know about, very glad I never stumbled on these books when they came out because I would've been very unaware of how harmful they are

The worst part is that people were just asking for trigger warnings - it wasn’t even “gross, don’t do that”. It was just “you can write and read about whatever you want, just please have trigger warnings so that I can avoid it if necessary”, which really shouldn’t be a controversial statement at all.

One of my favourite authors, Lynette Noni, has a page in the front of her book The Blood Traitor warning readers about being possibly triggered. She doesn’t specify triggers, simply says that given how the last book ended this book is essentially going to be pretty heavy following on from that. But since you should’ve read the last book to be reading that one, you get a pretty good idea of what’s coming simply from the warning.

I absolutely HATE when people complain about trigger warnings and call them spoilers!! First of all, no one is forcing you to read trigger warnings. Secondly, if the “twist” of “mystery” of a book is rape or incest, victims DESERVE PROTECTION more than your being unspoiled for a book!!! It’s honestly entitlement at it’s worst!!

    • @BrandonVout

Those people are worse than the ones who ignore the warnings then complain about the book containing things they hate. At least those people think they're doing the right thing by trying to rid the world of what they consider evil. The no spoilers people are just openly selfish.

    • @sevans8784
      @sevans8784 Рік тому +43

Exactly. If you're worried about spoilers and you're not someone who would benefit from being warned about certain kinds of content, then don't read the trigger warning, it's literally that simple...
Plus on the other end, these people are saying "NO!!! I wanna make sure survivors of horrible stuff are AS BLINDSIDED AS POSSIBLE when I re-traumatize them!!! You're spoiling all my fun!!!"
I wish people like that understood what being triggered actually meant. If you think about it in terms of food, maybe you like to be surprised by what you eat, completely understandable. But people with debilitating or dangerous allergies like to know what's in their meal. Nobody's saying "Oh, protect me from anything that might be remotely unpleasant!!!" We're just saying, "I know myself, and I'm not in a good place to deal with a panic attack or a week of dissociating right now, so I need to avoid the thing that will will likely cause that reaction."
Ugh I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but yeah

This goes even for non-sexual trigger warnings. I get triggered extremely easily by some kinds of content because it was used to abuse me or because it reminds me of a toxic relationship I had or attempted to keep, in a few cases just because it bothers me and always has. I also know a few people who can't even be in the same room with media that is violent (not even with gore, just too violent). With some people, if they explicitly tell me "I am uncomfortable with X," I tell them what media they might be interested in has whatever "X" is and to what extent it's there (answering their questions while being as vague as possible as to not make them completely uncomfortable, while telling them how it made me feel and how bad I thought it was). Trigger warnings are important to some people for a reason, saying that as a person with very few deal-breaker content warnings and actively consumes media that can be extremely triggering.

it stuck with me that in their apology for their intentional “sensitive” antisemitism they spelled it anti-Semitic. It is quite telling on the extent and effort of their research going into it that they can’t even spell it correctly. Here’s an explanation from the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance:
“The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) would like to address the spelling of the term 'antisemitism', often rendered as ‘anti-Semitism’. The IHRA’s concern is that the hyphenated spelling allows for the possibility of something called ‘Semitism’, which not only legitimizes a form of pseudo-scientific racial classification that was thoroughly discredited by association with Nazi ideology, but also divides the term, stripping it from its meaning of opposition and hatred toward Jews.
The philological term ‘Semitic’ referred to a family of languages originating in the Middle East whose descendant languages today are spoken by millions of people mostly across Western Asia and North Africa. Following this semantic logic, the conjunction of the prefix ‘anti’ with ‘Semitism’ indicates antisemitism as referring to all people who speak Semitic languages or to all those classified as ‘Semites’. The term has, however, since its inception referred to prejudice against Jews alone.
In the mid-nineteenth century, the derived construct ‘Semite’ provided a category to classify humans based on racialist pseudo-science. At the same time the neologism ‘antisemitism’, coined by German journalist Wilhelm Marr in 1879 to designate anti-Jewish campaigns, was spread through use by anti-Jewish political movements and the general public. The modern term gained popularity in Germany and Europe incorporating traditional Christian anti-Judaism, political, social and economic anti-Jewish manifestations that arose during the Enlightenment in Europe, and a pseudo-scientific racial theory that culminated in Nazi ideology in the twentieth century. Although the historically new word only came into common usage in the nineteenth century, the term antisemitism is today used to describe and analyze past and present forms of opposition or hatred towards Jews. In German, French, Spanish and many other languages, the term was never hyphenated.
The unhyphenated spelling is favored by many scholars and institutions in order to dispel the idea that there is an entity ‘Semitism’ which ‘anti-Semitism’ opposes. Antisemitism should be read as a unified term so that the meaning of the generic term for modern Jew-hatred is clear. At a time of increased violence and rhetoric aimed towards Jews, it is urgent that there is clarity and no room for confusion or obfuscation when dealing with antisemitism.”

There are people out there who have suffered years of PTSD or are still suffering from it because someone has tortured them physically/mentally/emotionally and writing TW on 1 freaking page so such people wouldn't be needlessly hurt further really shouldn't be a problem. And readers who don't need TW simply won't read that page.

I feel validated in my DNFing of this book. I am Eastern Orthodox so I found the whole magic system that Duncan used for the Russian country as it was just weird to me. They included prayer beads but doesn't really match how EO use prayer beads at all. They used saints and praying to saints but they didn't really understand how praying to saints work. The "saints" function like a pantheon but that just completely is not how it works. Saints can do miracles and we can petition for miracles but the deity like way they wrote the saint/pantheon was uncomfortable to me. I also remember vividly sitting on a plane flying home from my Grandfather's funeral and I read that character lit an incense stick and stuck it behind her ear. I literally closed the book and stared into space. That is not the type of incense we use at all and isn't how we use incense. It just felt to me that Duncan wanted to write a Russian based fantasy without really researching Russian spirituality and church. I am shocked about the antisemitic part of the plot as that was something I completely missed.

This 100%. I’m also Eastern Orthodox. While I don’t mind people including some aesthetic aspects of our faith in a story (especially if they’re inspired by a culture/world region where that religion is predominant), but I felt constantly insulted while reading about this. Nadya is supposed to be a cleric, but the surface-level way religion was handled here made it clear to me that either Duncan’s incapable of writing a character who has fully internalized her religious beliefs the way she claims, or Nadya never actually believed in the first place (maybe both). The way this series’ religious system was so awfully squandered actually motivated me to write a Labyrinth retelling to prove that it can actually be done well and convincingly. I also missed the antisemitic plot line while reading, but looking back so many things about the plot make me cringe if I view them in that light.

Maybe there's something I'm majorly missing from a religious / cultural perspective, and maybe there's just a type of incense of never seen used, but... has Duncan ever actually used incense? Like, it burns? the end gets hot? It diminishes as it burns until the lit end would get close to or touch the skin? What am I missing? But to reiterate, support for your comment 100%, but massively confused over that detail.

@@MortMe0430 You are right to that is seems like a safety hazard. In the scene it was supposed to have th incense sit in a bowl to burn. My main issue is that the Orthodox church doesn't use stick incense. I am not familiar with the technical terms for what we use so bear with me as I describe it. Esenssially beads of frankincense are used. The way it is used is that there is a censor that has a lit piece of coal in it and the beads are placed on top of the lit coal which causes the smoke. The censor is then used be priest of deacon to bless the congregation, icons, or others things depending on the service. Sticks are practical with the swinging motion of the censor as it is centrivical forms that keeps the coal and beads on it. Sticks would not work so well.

Is Emily A Duncan currently a protestant or were they raised in a Protestant denomination? Bc that could explain their understanding of saints as a “pantheon” of sorts. I’ve been raised as a seventh day adventist and I’m currently in another Protestant denomination, and that’s the understanding most Protestants have of the catholic/EO faith. I was essentially taught that catholics/EO worshipped idols (which I now know is just plainly untrue).

I don't really follow author drama but I remember reading Wicked Saints after seeing the hype and had to put it down after just about 2 chapters bc I felt the way they wrote the clearly desi-coded characters in such a fetishy and exoticised way made me super uncomfortable. I vaguely remember thinking, "There's no way she's on the level." Sad to be proven right

  • @UnicornHunterbooks

That is super weird that they knew they were incorporating antisemitic plot points into the book and published it like that anyway. Honestly, why is anyone antisemitic? I don't get it at all. Also, Wicket Saints was really, really boring. It's weird how authors who have a huge following can get away with more mediocre books.

So I actually remember this incident REALLY clearly because I was like... not in it, but adjacent to adjacent, enough that it was incredibly stressful at the time. I feel like I was so much younger then even though it wasn't THAT long ago, lol, and it was during the time I was trying really hard to get a YA book published - I submitted to Author Mentor Match (if y'all know what that is) which I think both E.Duncan and Christine Lynn Herman were part of; I didn't get picked by either of them, but one of the 'mentors' did pick my manuscript up who was sort of on the fringe of the group they moved in. Also, they were doing a book signing together near where I lived, so I took the opportunity to go out to see them. I got both their books, we chatted, they had apparently both seen my manuscript and complimented it so I was VERY starry-eyed, etc. I went on working on my book (note: AMM was not useful, don't recommend it) slowly fell out of contact with my 'mentor', and wound up disliking both their books after reading them lol, but still followed her and both of them on Twitter. And then, well, one day I went on Twitter and saw people talking about how E.Duncan had been called out, they were the worst, etc, and Christine had made that tweet, etc.
And it really fucked with me! Especially the part where people who'd been friendly with them were turning on a dime to disclaim that, which felt (although it's hard to know) mostly fueled by 'I don't wanna go down with this person' rather than a genuine moral reaction. Also, bc internet callout, things escalated VERY fast and hard and it was hard to sort out what exactly had happened before Duncan was just straight-up gone. Once I had the mental ability to go and research after the fact it was clear they'd genuinely fucked up, but the whole situation just... blew whatever shine there was off YA twitter and made me genuinely question if I ever DID want to get traditionally published. So it was a harrowing experience at the time, but in retrospect it made me delete my twitter which was the best decision I ever made lol, so there's a silver lining to everything.

As an incest survivor who ships Jonsa, I do have an issue with people comparing ships to real abuse and using that as a reason to harass shippers who can also be survivors especially since most real incest is adult or older family members sexually abusing children not adult cousins falling in love, it’s not really comparable in my opinion like nothing in Jonsa fic resembles child abuse. HOWEVER, the issue here was not that. It was the author saying a victim isn’t a real victim because they disagreed with them on Twitter and being completely dismissive of the need for trigger warning, that is horrible. There is a harassment from “antis” but there’s also horrible behavior from shippers sometimes too and when that shipper is an author with a large platform - yikes.
