It isn't the edginess of Family Guy's humor that people don't like; it's the over-reliance on cutaway gags and references, rather than humor organically developed out of a clever plot. The shows are made of disconnected odds and ends that could be interchanged between episodes without any loss. "Hey, remember that time Frank Capra's ghost punched an owl on a Wednesday?" The jokes have nothing to do with anything.

Something I learned after we recorded this is that TikTokers and zoomers have rediscovered Family Guy because it’s so clippable. Turns out it was perfect for that format. I don’t think cutaways are inherently bad, it just means Family Guy is much more of a sketch comedy show than it is a sitcom.

@@RedCowArcade Fair point. But I still think South Park and even The Simpsons are better. Maybe even Futurama and Beavis and Butthead are better... You know what, you guys should do one of those tier list and rank all these cartoons!! 😂 EDIT: Also: I just rewatched the "Half in the Bag Episode 72: X-Men: Days of Future Past and A Million Ways to Die in the West" from RedLetterMedia, and despite some exaggerations here and there about Seth MacFarlane (which most of the time is for comedy sake, because there is the time when they talk more seriously...), I gotta say that I agree with them in the majority. It's just fun and interesting to compare these analysis.

I agree with EJ about American Dad. And he has Resident Evil 2 in the background? Gigachad as they say
I saw some early Family Guy recently and was reminded of how funny it is. I fell out of love with that show the longer it went on. That probably has to do with Seth MacFarlane having less to do with it the longer it went on.

I watched the first episode and it was a bit too long. The thing that keeps me from going all in on Seth is that a lot of his jokes keep going after the punch line. They were around the table talking about swearing and it just went on forever. The concept is hilarious tho and having it set in the 80s and 90s where that kind of school culture was more prominent really sold it.
Also Matt and Trey can be pretty pretentious. They got the film school stuff under their belt. The family guy formula had been well established by the time that manatee episode came out so it was so easy to make fun of it.

Family Guy, like any sketch comedy show, is extremely hit and miss. It was at its best of course when Seth McFarlane was a primary writer for it. First five or six seasons are legitimately funny and occasionally very clever. But even in its heyday, if the cutaway jokes don't land, then FG lacks any substance to make up for its paper thin story or occasionally overly "edgy" sense of humor. Several minutes of several later episodes are occupied by shit like Conway Twitty songs or very meanspirited, gory scenes like when Peter eviscerates a dead whale.
As such, FG doesn't have the heart of golden era Simpsons nor the consistent storytelling of American Dad, so it'll never be as good as those or many other great shows. Still, I've recently been revisiting it. I don't wanna say it's better than I remember, but it is still easy television to just throw on in the background or get baked af to. Lots of laughs, even to this day, just don't bother with the later episodes. Like Simpsons, it is DECADES past its prime.

I've only seen the first episode, loved it, but have been putting it off for fear that they're all an hour long.
I don't think sitcoms need to go past the half hour mark, that's what two-parters are for. But I have no other complaints. Gives me the warm fuzzy feelings of early Family Guy.

I enjoyed 1000 Ways to Die in the West. Saw it once in the theatre. “Take your hat off boy, it’s a Dollar Bill!” Lot of dumb quick laughs.
Speaking of: I miss 1000 Ways to Die. Stupid dopey show but I’ll be God Damned if I didn’t admit it was a guilty pleasure. The quick 5-min sequences were easy to watch. I was too busy for television in my 20s but 1000 Ways to Die would have me stand in the living room for a few minutes before heading out the door.

The first three seasons of Family Guy, prior to its cancellation, were genuinely exceptional. There’s a reason why the DVD box-sets sold so phenomenally well that the series revived three years later in 2005 when revivals and reboots were largely unheard of for television shows. Unfortunately, the series lost many of its key writers in those intervening years (most notably, the two men who would help Seth develop “American Dad!”). The characters are all virtually unrecognizable from their original pre-revival incarnations and the humour and narratives became quite lazy, especially after the sixth season.

Thanks for reviewing this. I didn't have any interest in the Ted series until now.
I think A Million Ways to Die in the West is pretty funny, myself.
    Edit:
I think the reason people turned on Seth McFarlane has a lot to do with Matt Stone and Trey Parker dumping on Family Guy so many years ago. They said they hate Family Guy and they don't like "gags". I think that might have turned people on Family Guy.

    • @classic_colin
      @classic_colin 7 місяців тому

@@RedCowArcadeNot only are they both prequels, but “Ted” the TV series and “Young Sheldon” are both period sitcoms set in the early ‘90s and the family dynamics appear to be a bit similar (the protagonist is unpopular and bullied but has a special ability in a sentient teddy bear companion for John and a prodigal genius-level intellect for Sheldon). Also, both shows place a strong emphasis on the region in which they’re set (East Texas for “Young Sheldon” and Boston for “Ted”).
“Young Sheldon” is one of the most popular primetime network and streaming sitcoms at the moment, so it’s not especially far-fetched to suspect that the Ted prequel TV series may have been conceptualized and greenlit based on the success of “Young Sheldon” and developed with YS as a template.
