And just to think 9/11 happened later that year in September. 2001 in my opinion is one of the worse years in the modern 20th century.
Just to put this into retrospect, I'm 29, and I vividly remember when Dale hit the wall. I was 6 at the time.

Dale Earnhardt Sr was pronounced dead from a critical neck injury.
@@mikemangieri7626 It was not the speed he hit at, it was the angle. He hit the wall high banked at 45 degrees head-on. That jerks your head at a 2 o clock and 7 o clock position. His vertebrae snapped in his neck. If that wasn't bad enough the steering wheel collapsed into his torso and broke several ribs. And yes he refused to wear the HANS device because he thought it was the most idiotic stupid POS ever. He was a true southern boy. My dad had the same attitude to things like that. Don't understand it? Don't want it.
His entire autopsy sheet is posted online right after the event happened but it is extremely hard to find anymore. You have to dig through early 2000's websites to find it.

I'll never forget that day. I was working on that Sunday in the South very pro NASCAR and this girl was crying and I asked her what happened and she told me.

I wonder what the G force was when he went from 190 mph to zero in a fraction of a second. The fence worked like an aircraft arrest on him and that saved his life I believe. Still hard to believe he did not get hurt at all. Another lucky person was the photographer 50 feet or so before the fence impact.

One of the best decisions NASCAR ever made was ending racing back to the line when a caution comes out.
This is a controversial opinion but it shouldn't be.
I thought it was banning alcohol in the cars. Petty used to chug down a can every time he went to the pits.
I was in Jr's pit box when Dillion flew into the fence. We all thought he wasnt walking away from this one but then he crawled out with no issues, such a crazy moment to see in person.

wow. i'm not even 5 minutes in and my jaw has hit the floor like 15 times. that crash at 1:30 was especially insane to watch, i cannot imagine what the people who saw it live and in person, as well as the drivers involved felt.. huge props to all these brave people who do car racing.
Great thing about NASCAR Crews. When something like what happened to #3 happen, it DOESN'T matter whose team you are on it matters that the driver is saved from further harm

I was at The Daytona race when Montoya crashed. I was at the exit of turn 2, and could feel the heat. I can't imagine what the people in turn 3 felt.
I think something in the steering. Maybe a tie rod. I was looking left at turn 2 and my dad said What the hell is he doing? I turned and seen him slam into it

Once they started hitting 210+ is when the cars started to launch. Robert Pressley had a few of those. Restrictor plate racing may be saving lives.

Would there be any other material than grass to put on the escape areas? Something that absorbs the kinetic energy generated by high speed cars? It's only a wild guess.

They've converted a few infields to turf, with deep cushion, this past off season. Only problem with putting something super absorbing is it'll catch the tires and roll.

Did you want her to snap both of her arms when she hit the wall? If you didn't know, if you're holding onto the steering wheel when you take a head on crash, there's a big chance you break your arms. She raced Indy cars, in an open cockpit, she just used her training to protect herself. I will say the head bumpers might've broke her forearm, but she probably didn't think about those, just thought "don't wanna break my arms, hands off"

To me, it was strange how Dale SR finally won Daytona and then that horrible thing happened. Almost like it was scripted that way or something like he accomplished everything on his bucket list so to speak. I hated Dale the race car driver, but I cried the day.

Went to an Inde crash and a race broke out.
I would say the most unforgettable wreck would Earnhardts wreck. I'm not saying it was a good thing. I'm saying he wanted to win Daytona so bad and that is were he passed away and everyone remembers
He wasn't trying to win at the end of the race. He was driving defensively which he rarely did due to have three DEI cars in the top three positions. Michael Waltrip#15 in the lead, Dale Earnhardt Jr. #8 in second, and Dale Earnhardt Sr. #3 in third.

and MIami . the fans want more Superspeedways , and two more road tracks . we need open up schedule , Mass, Philadelphia , Maryland , Missouri they all need their own tracks , road , and more dirt tracks

I really have to say this, but Dale Earnhardt Sr has been asking for suicide HIMself, through two ways.
One, his unorthodox, aggressive and often unsportsmanlike driving made him a very hated driver (anyone trying to tell me it was nothing but envy from fellow drivers is way too dumb to admit), and two, his unwillingness to use - and actually ridiculing - the head/neck safety device that was being recommended at the time of his death.
Guess that was his mistake #2 too that iced him for good.
Serves as a telltale lesson for any other drivers trying to 'Dale Earnhardt Sr'ize things...
