    I live in Adelaide where these cars were made. GM shut the Holden factory down end last year. So if you can get hold of one hang onto it. It's the end of an era.

    Hi Sara. I have just found your site and have to say that I am impressed. I have a daughter who is a 16-year-old gear head and is constantly bullied by the Girly girls for her interest. THANK YOU FOR SHOWING Nadia that she is not the only female with gasoline in her blood and that you can be feminine and a car person also. I have shown Nadia your site several times and she already has subscribed. Thanks for showing the female point of view.

    Being an Aussie, I can give you a bit more info. The US police specials are the long wheel base version which sold in Australia as the luxury Caprice, we did not get anything like the stripped out police version sold to US police. Australian police use the SV6 which is basically a V6 equivalent of the SS. The SS is a Commodore as Sarah said but there is also a luxury model called the Calais which was less sporty, more luxurious, and was available with the LS V8. The reason they are no longer available is that GM pulled the pin on Holden manufacturing in Australia in 2017 which also meant the end of the Chevy SS. There is also a pick up version that Doug DiMuro did a review on.

    • @LynxStarAuto
      @LynxStarAuto 6 років тому +2

      Phil Ridley the Calais is basically the Pontiac G8 correct? And the pick up is called the Ute. There was rumors of it coming stateside as an El Camino, but alas that would make way too much sense, so GM didn't do it.

    • @australiantruckspotting8883
      @australiantruckspotting8883 6 років тому +2

      Lynx Star Automotive not sure of the specs on the G8 but they probably are similar to the Calais. Yes, the pick up is called a ute, there were various models from the basic work ute to the SS and HSV models.there is also a sport wagon !! We are going to miss them !!!

    • @australiantruckspotting8883
      @australiantruckspotting8883 6 років тому +2

      Lynx Star Automotive I agree, the SS ute would have been successful in the US without a doubt!

    • @grumpychocobo
      @grumpychocobo 6 років тому +5

      G8 is just the previous generation Commodore. G8 was based on the VE Commodore. SS is based on the VF Commodore. I'm not as familiar with the Calais but I believe that's akin to a high trim level Commodore, right? Regardless, you can pretty much look at the G8 as the equivalent of the SS but for the prior Commodore generation.

    Thanks for a great review! Glad to see someone who “gets” the car (I’m on my second and will probably own a third, not counting my G8 GXP). Chevy never advertised the car, unless you count the SS’s that were used by NASCAR from ‘14-‘17, and even then most NASCAR fans don’t know what it is. I will note that the seats are ventilated, not air conditioned, although the effects are the same 😉 Holden also made a station wagon version, the Ute (think El Camino), and the high end HSV series. Best car ever, IMHO. Wish they would’ve continued it here.
    Btw, you’re the best looking SS reviewer so far 👍👍👍

    Great review of the best car Chevy ever made. I've driven and sold these, Camaros and Corvettes. The SS is simply fantastic! The market for it is larger than you suggest Sarah. Think 5-series, Merc 300's, Audi A-6...SHO... The SS is a great car for anyone looking for a performance sedan. For the '17's the only options were the full-sized spare and sunroof. Everything else was standard. Oh! BTW, skip-shift..."sounds like Communism to me:" clearly your best line ever!

    The Holden Caprice (Chevy Caprice) had a longer 118.5” wheel base, WM platform. The Holden Commodore (Chevy SS) had a shorter 114.8” wheel base, VF platform. They were different cars, but shared a ton of the same parts. The earlier Holden Commodore VE platform was the Pontiac G8, the 114.7” wheel base. The VE was updated and strengthened, and that became the VF platform for the Chevy SS/Holden Commodore VF.

    Hi Sarah and Hello from Australia. I’m a new subscriber who finds your style to be a breath of fresh air. Your videos are entertaining, informative and often make me laugh, in a good way that is. As you probably know, the Chevrolet SS is an Australian built car known locally as a Holden Commodore that was modified for exported. The Holden name goes way back but you can look this up on Wikipedia. Holden did become a subsidiary of G.M and for a long time was known as G.M.H or General Motors Holden. Because our local market is so small, locally produced cars were protected by tariffs on imported cars for a long time until the Government decided to give us access to cheaper imports by lifting tariffs. Our local industry then relied on Government subsidies from time to time to keep producing cars but our current Government decided that they would no longer continue to do this. A declining market share and production costs resulted in Holdens decision to stop local production of the Commodore and it closed its doors in October 2017. Sincere well wishes to you and Charlie. Keep up the good work. Cheers Graham

    Hi Sarah, nice video, I own a SS 2015 Automatic, I am real lold and my kness made me sell a 2007 White Ron Fellows Z06 Corvette, cry me a river. But I tested a lot of cars and actually wanted a Camaro but could not see out, then wanted a Caddy CTS-V but they were too expensive, so I tried the SS. All the ponts you made are true, to sound the suspension, interior, it just does not drive llike a big ole sedan, it drives small. Too bad you did not get to try TRACK Mode, it really makes the Auto trans with paddles feel like the old Z. It just drives fun. at 19,000 my Dad passed away and left me a little money and told me to spend on my car, He knows I missed the Corvette. So I installed the CTS-V LSA supercharger on that LS3, i lowered it, added Gauges, Water Meth Injection, Cold Air intake, Beefed up the rear suspension bars. Its a beast for sure, M3s, M4s are toast, most Mustangs too. I was going to trade for a C7 Corvette but now thinking I will keep it for a long time. Keep up the good work. D

    Fantastic, honest, fun review Sarah from someone the other side of the pond. Still own one of the SS's uncles. Holden Adventra CX8. Think station wagon, with Gen III and AWD. As a boy who has popped in and out of Davis Monthan a number of times I think you would also be impressed with uncle as an enjoyable, though not necessarily tidy toy up Mt Lemmon. Love your stories. Especially ones like this that make you wonder who's got the reins in some companies.

    Re: people not knowing what it was. When I ordered mine, half the *dealership sales people* did not know what I was asking for. They would ask if I meant a Camaro SS.
    People out in public ask all the time what it is. I expected more “is that a Malibu”, but in 2 years I’ve never gotten that. What I DO get is people saying “Hey I know that’s not a Malibu, but what is it?” For a car the critics called “bland” and “boring” in the appearance department, and I bought as a sleeper (in the sleepy “Mystic Green” color, no less), it gets a lot more attention than I bargained for.

  • @nordic5490

    An Ozzie here. That 2015 Commodore was fairly tame, and thus those dodgy Bridgestone tyres can handle the pull.
    The 2016 on, version Commodore, Gen-F GTS features a 6.2-litre supercharged LSA V8 engine which provides 430 kW (580 hp) of power and 740 N⋅m (550 lb⋅ft) of torque. A supercharger pulley change really made them get up and go. hence, the OEM tyres then became Continentals. Much bigger brakes too.

    • @chrisrosie0584

      The VF1 Chevy SS is a vastly different beast to our Commodore SS, the Chev version sits between our SS redline and GTS (our Motorsport editions are the closest in specifications). And the HSV GTS had the 430kw LSA since 2013, subsequently then 435kw in the GTSR, and 474kw for the LS9 GTSR W1 (Sarah - there's some great drool worthy uploads if you search the "HSV GTSR W1" ).

    • @nordic5490
      @nordic5490 6 років тому

      hi Chris, you sound like a fellow Ozzie. I drive a Ford Falcon FG XR6 Turbo, dead set simple to power up, so, yup, there are some faster 4door cars in Oz. I had a chuckle @ another youtube vid where a pommy (english) reviewer also got all excited over a lower spec Commodore.
      BTW, what is with the Bald Eagle references ? I know Cleatus talks up the baldy, but, our Ozzie common Wedge Tail Eagle would demolish a Bald Eagle, and we Ozzies dont ever talk about Wedgies under the bonnet.
      I reckon Sarah would be better off referencing to a more international 'unicorns' under the bonnet, like Mighty Car Mods do. That whole bald eagle thing is a bit down market, but it suits Cleatus comedic style.

      In series 1 trim, the main thing the Chev SS had over our Redline was the LS3 vs L77. In series 2 the main difference was magnetic ride control on Chev SS. Yes there are also some trim differences, but I think its a bit of a stretch to say vastly different. The drive would be very similar as they are both variations on the same theme. Granted the HSV GTS mixes things up but its specs are not matched by anything with a plain Holden or Chev badge on a Commodore in either country.

    Reason why it didn't last long because Holden discontinued the production of the V8 Commodore. Sales were super poor in Australia, leaving a somewhat abundant supply of these chassis. So GM produced the SS for the American market to help get rid of inventory. Once Holden cleared supply, the Commodore got a complete change and the US market didn't get the new model. So basically, we got the leftovers. Love the car, my next car would be either this, or a 2011 CTSV sedan.

    • @WingZero1181
      @WingZero1181 6 років тому

      Eric Erickson The SS was a limited run to help get rid of the old Commodores overstock. GM had no intentions of making it as a long term vehicle. Hence the two and a half year production line, and limitied advertisement.
      I would honestly love to see the SS come back, but GM has no intention of that... at this time.

    I owned a G8 GXP (manual) for 7 years/120k miles. Great car. You can buy a skip shift module that plugs into the transmission. Takes 5 minutes, cheap part. I bought it from Jegs.

    A guy I work with wanted a Camaro SS but would not get it because he has two little girls. I told him about the Chevy SS. Explained to him not to many were out there and if he found one to get it. I even showed him vids. He wimped out and leased a Malibu. I told him in 10 years he will regret it.

    I have a 2009 G8 GT with a LS3, I love my G8 I think it looks much better than the SS plus it weighs about 300 lbs less added ZL1 wheels with stretched tires wide offset and man does it look good. Supercharger is next on its list. Thanks for doing this video it is sad to see this car go away, it is the Blueprint of Pontiacs G8/Holden that was a great selling car till GM screwed up!

    Hey nice vid. Tr6060 refers to the family of transmissions in Tremec.They all have different ratios - the SS has the MER with a 3.2 first while the ZR1 has the MH3 with a 2.29 first and stronger gears.
    Its electric... ;)

    cooled seats and heated steering wheels, every vehicle should come standard with it :O
    Also the only thing I like about Chryslers is that they offer cooled cupholders, you press a button and it runs the AC around them and gets the cupholders nice and frosty.

    Awesome review, Sarah, thank you! I need to correct you on a small thing, though. The Chevy Caprice PPV is actually based on the Statesman, not the Commodore, but they're obviously close in design. You're spot on about the lack of marketing. That's been a typical failure of GM for many years when it comes to it's RWD sedans. They never promote them and then wonder why they don't sell well. I don't get what kind of business model that is. The only one I can remember them actually giving a shit about was the Pontiac G8 which is what the SS would be today if they hadn't gotten rid of that division. At least they made an effort for a change with that car. Well, their marketing issues are only one of a number of problems that company has. I'm hoping Chevrolet breaks off from GM and brings back Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and creates a North American Holden division while putting cars back into production in Australia as well. Now that'd be nice!

    They closed down the factory in Australia where they were made. Also ending the production of the commodore in Australia. As Ford made the same move and ended the production of the falcon.

    Chevy didn’t discontinue the SS. GM Australia gave up manufacturing vehicles in Australia. Big big shame.
    As for the marketing in the US, that was intentional. Lots of trade and political factors at play with this car.

    The reason for the burbles and cracks and pops is the DFCO. It’s cutting fuel off, Jaguar does the same thing to get the cracks and pops. If you Scandinavian flick it and downshift you can drift pretty easy. I have the automatic with rev matching (yea I know, call me a lame) but dropping gears and getting on it will overwhelm the tires and allow you to do scumbag shit.

    It is sort of like the SSR truck that GM had around tge early 2000. Cool looking truck but it had its limits. If I remember, no manual, and it was in its own niche market, much like the SS. The SS is a nice car. I'd love to see them bring back the huge RWD, big V8 cars like the Impala SS and Caprices of the 90s. Anyways, Great review!

    Hello from Tasmania!
    Commodores in Australia are driven by Bogans.
    FYI Bogan is an Australian term for a person from a lower socioeconomic background who likes to do donuts and drink Jim Beam and cola cans.
    I would love to hear you call someone a Bogan in your worst Aussie accent.
    Love your work!👏

      Hi I'm from Tasmania too and I make more then many Tasmanians do and drive a VF Commodore. I also never drink Jim Bean. I guess that means I have to drop my uni education, halve my income and tell my family we need to live like shit because Lindsays preconceptions will be shattered if we don't!
      Or we can just say that bogans drive a lot of cheaper cars and those with pretensions above their bank account like to drive European cars on the banks debt because apparently that is a sign of being smarter or something. I think they look pretty stupid, at least with money, but there I go stereotyping too.
