The thing that saddens me is that even when I’m off my smartphone, my family members are on theirs and ignore you…..wish we could go back to the days when it was just flip phones.
Finally someone said it, my family and even friends are on their phone most of the time. Me too actually , smartphones are addicting and it's not getting better😢
I gave up my smartphone & simply ended up spending all those hours on my pc instead.
Get rid of your computer and use the computers at the library if you need internet. You have to pay to use them so you won't be wasting time down there.
😂😂😂
😭😭😭😭😭
Well that is your own fault
@@gradyrigby2851 well technically then, it was my fault also when I was wasting away all those hours on my phone...so, what's the difference? What good will getting rid of my phone do when I can just pop open my laptop instead?
Flip phones are great! I'm a Japanese essayist. The name is Mikan Oshidari(忍足みかん🍊♥). I'm using a translation tool, so I'm sorry if my English isn't good. I published a book called [I want to stop being a slave to my smartphone]. As the title suggests, I was addicted to my smartphone, so I switched to a flip phone. It's all about mental health. Flip phones are comfortable. Smartphones are addictive. It's convenient, but painful. Smartphone addiction is [normal] for people these days, so people think I'm a weirdo or weirdo for using a flip phone. sad. I hope that flip phones will be reevaluated around the world and that smartphone addiction will be seen as a problem. Please feature flip phones again.
I hope smart devices phase out in a fashion, like cigarettes. I hope people will recognize the consequences, and put a stigma on public device use, especially in younger people.
Guys, if you leave your smartphone don’t fall back to the TV. Go outside.
Don’t give up. Smartphones suck you in. There are other ways to keep up with things. We rely way too much on smartphones. It’s nearly impossible to do less on it. I can go through phases where I am doing great at minimizing apps on it and time spent on it and yet every time I look at it or because I have no choice but to use it because my husband is going to call or want me near it. I hate that phone. Society does force you to own one. But why should we conform to the world’s standards. When you use a flip phone it causes you to think for yourself and learn patience and to solve your own problems. There is nothing wrong with wondering about something and later finding out the answer and learning new roads is healthy for the brain. We will remember things more like dates or appointments because we’ll have to. Use your calendar. Create a system that works for you
I'm super addicted to my phone, and recently I dawned on me that addictions attract more addiction.
For year I was addicted to porn, like casual porn , idk it you can call it that but just people going to town so I could get off and sleep lol. It's such a common thing and because so many do it I did too. Until I forced myself to stop masturbating. It still is super difficult but stopping porn even soft core Like girl in bikini dancing on Instagram.
It's been a few months now, and I've gotten massive improvement in self control and feel more confident with energy, which is helping me deal with other issues like gaming eating my free time.
I removed porn, gaming , masturbating, and like magic my health and focus is improving, I even read a book LOL, Haven't read a book since middle school for fun. Haha
Now the biggest and hardest addiction I can't seem to shack is youtube, Instagram and my smart phone.
It's annoying how what known to be worse addiction aren't as addictive as a smart phone.
I've decided to get a flip phone just because I just don't have the self control to handle a smart phone yet.
Funny enough, the smart phone is where I, game, watch porn to masturbate, and have my addictions. I don't smoke , drink or drugs. But my God the phone is just as additive and damaging.
The phone is my worst enemy and such a powerful tool too
It has been about a month since I started using a Nokia 2720 Flip phone instead of the iPhone 6s that I have. It has been great so far. I have a lot more energy and my power of focus and concentration has increased significantly. I have been reading a lot more and exercising more often.
In my case though, I did not completely get rid of the iPhone 6s. I still use it when I am traveling and need to use maps, or when there is another situation where I need to use a smart phone. My plan and rule of thumb is to use my dumb phone about 80% of the times, and give the remaining 20% to my smart phone.
I am in front of the computer a significant amount of hours due to my main job and my Amazon business, therefore anything I need to do on a smart phone I can do it on a laptop.
Thanks for the video.
I would also recommend UA-cam searching the video "Truthstream Media - Why You Can't Stop Clickin"
Step 1: Smartphone to dumbphone
Step 2: Dumbphone to no phone
Some people seem to forget that smartphones and social media aren't necessarily connected with one and another. Smartphones exist to make the flip and dumb phone experience better.
That's not why they exist.
True. Just delete social media apps. Keep phone & SMS.
@@h4lcyo
Hard to do when you constantly can re download them and get addicted again
Flip phones are superior, because they won’t let you. Unless you somehow have the skill and tech, to upgrade a flip phone to support social media.
I disagree, smart phones are completely different from the old phones, you can delete all the apps you like the temptation is still there to redownload them, or Google stuff every five minutes and you will still constantly be bombarded with people contacting you and notifications
I'm going through my smart phone detox as of today. So far. I feel a little anxious without looking at my smart phone. I'm watching more t.v instead. lol . I have a Nokia flip phone. It's basic and I love it alot. I was on my smart phone for 8 hrs a day! I tried to just delete apps off of my smart phone but I was weak and kept installing them. That's why I had to go to a flip phone immediately . I was suffering from text neck, fatigue and feeling anxious from smart phone usage. I hope you are loving the basic flip phone life!
I’m considering the switch myself and I think social media is draining me.
I hate Apple iphone13 it intrudes on everything, changing words I type. SUGGESTING dumb stuff, constantly breaking on to page I am working on. Down with😊 evil Apple Empire.
Awesome video! I really liked what you mentioned towards the end regarding how consumers (Apple, Samsung, LG, etc.) gave the opportunity to choose the smartphone, and the consumers chose it. The smartphone unfortunately has become a big marketing tool for companies because of this. Therefore, it is becoming harder and harder to do certain things (like pay for parking, accessing a restaurant menu, or concert tickets.) There have been some new problems it's created without a doubt. In the end, it really all comes down to awareness. People should be more aware of not only how their smartphone can make you "less present" but a higher awareness of what's going on in the world around them. I think mental health wise, social media is the elephant in the room.
Great video man. We all need to get back to the basics when things were simple.
I feel like if these kinds of Flip Phones were able to continue and be updated to todays standards it could be really neat!
Okay! Here is the way you can have the best of both worlds. GET THE "CAT S22 FLIP" PHONE!!! It is a physical flip phone with a tiny 2.8 inch screen that is a touch screen that works on a stripped down version of Android 11. It gives you a feel of a dumb phone but if you really need the basics of a smartphone in a pinch, you have it. Because the screen is so tiny you will be less likely to watch movies or play games on it, yet if you really need it in a pinch, you could make due with the small screen and do what you need to like you would with a regular smart phone. The thing is fully water proof and built like a tank also! I use it as my EDC phone and have a second phone that is a Galaxy under a cheap unlimited data plan as my back up phone I call my "Home Number" that I go to part time if I need to something that is a bit higher tech in certain situations for today's living. But here is the best part of the CAT S22!!! RIGHT NOW, IT IS GOUNG FOR UNDER $70 brand new and unlocked on AMAZON!!!🤘🤘🤘🤘
Wow that was a great video! It was fun watching you use a flip phone, at some parts of the week, I felt that I wanted one as well. However, when you starting missing voicemails, I realized it wasn’t the perfect solution. Proud of you! Can’t wait to see the iPhone 5 in action lol
Me too, I’m excited!
I'm not sure why voicemails were missed. That shouldn't happen because it still has to go to the carrier to record the voicemail just as it does for an iPhone, and it displays an icon when there are new voicemails. My dad and a couple other people I know still use them, and AT&T sent out newer ones for free to customers since 3G is being shut down (similar to the one in the video). It does actually have UA-cam and Maps (but it would be a pain to use)! I actually have one too I occasionally play around with. It's a Cingular Flip IV which I think is equivalent to the Alcatel.
Letss gooo!
Another interesting video would be if you could pick one device and just use this one device for everything.
Example.
An ipad or just an iPhone or a laptop
And use it for texting and calling to professional work.
Let's see if one can minimize tech to the bare minimum so to minimize distractions but still get work done
a smartwatch has helped me, since you can still get calls and texts but you aren't likely to scroll. I admire you for being honest about quitting early, as you could have easily pretended to have gone all 7 days.
I think those phones have a FM Radio if you plug headphones into them. You could listed to the FM Radio while running 😆
Fm radio walked, so podcasts could run 😂
Honestly just do an apple watch cellular. It allows you to disconnect from the social media, games, etc. of the smartphone but still have full functionality for directions, asking siri a question, using NFC payments, letting your spouse/friends know where you are with find my. All of the stuff you need but none of the other stuff that you don't want. Can even listen to music, podcasts, etc.
This looks to be what I need to do! I’m a wood worker and can’t stop the cycle of comparing my work to others work. I feel like it’s ruining me and sucking the motivation out of my goals. I desperately need to make the switch and force myself back to normalcy.
I'm in the same position, I don't work with wood but understand what you are saying, I've just decided to switch back to a basic phone because I realised how much a smart phone has destroyed me as a person. Sounds dramatic I know but my mind is consumed now with comparison to everyone and its destroyed my Self- esteem and my authenticity, I barely know who I am anymore, I'm buying a a basic phone today and making the swap, would love to know how you got on?
Im also a woodworker who feels exactly the same haha
We're on the same boat buddy. Not gonna lie though that smartphones has a lot to offer than a flip or dumb phone. But as they say less is more. I've been with my flip phone for almost a week now and I am so proud of myself as I'm able to focus on myself since I don't need to "devote" my life to smartphone. My flip phone takes me back to my younger years when I'm still in the process of shaping my personality.. less comparisons and being cool.
@@htid43Don't worry pal, it's not dramatic. I feel you as I've experienced that when I am still tied up with my smartphone every single day. Social medias makes me feel less of a person coz seeing others' progress/es (Please correct me) are just swipes or scrolls away. It's easy for others to say to just ignore it or whatnot. Well, the stress and anxiety is real. Having a flip phone may not be (and will never be IMO) the solution to my problem, but it helps me to go back to basics with less complication. Now, I can spend more time with my friends and I miss texting and calling honestly. ❤
At least he learned something from the experience, and hopefully he fallows through on being more engaged.
However, on the other hand it sounds like a technical issue and a matter of circumstance that lead to him stopping early. Maybe one day he'll try it again?
honestly, i just removed all the apps that were distracting me from my phones. kept the important stuff and still get the ease of access of having a smart phone.
I love the old ways of cell phones but making your smart phone into a " dumb" phone is easier.
You need to stay away from Social media while using a smartphone. I deleted instagram, snapchat, facebook and other social media apps and only kept twitter (coz I hardly even open it 😅). And that is the best decision I took in a long time.
I kept re-installing my social media. I was weak!!! I just bought a flip phone.
@@Shannon-uj2yg People seem to lack disciple nowadays(myself included). Did you end up staying away from SM?
@@Shannon-uj2yg same 😂I wanna buy a flip phone cuz I keep downloading social media
@@Shannon-uj2yg same I just got My Instagram again , dam it
Hi Scott, thank you for the informative video. However, an unrelated question to your video. I'd be very interested to know about your white office chair. Make, model? Thank you!
Get yourself an mp3 player for music, remember them, Sony new Walkmans are great
I have a flip phone with a separate number which I keep in my car. It's a backup - in case I forget my Iphone, or want to use the iPhone for GPS and call on the other phone (e.g.). I pay $19.99 for 120 days. And yes - you're not always worried about losing $1,000 by misplacing or theft.
It depends... If you have a contract with few data instead of unlimited data outside tou cannot use you cellphone allot, but in wifi location a smartphone can draw you attention.
If you're missing phone calls it sounds like there's something wrong with your phone or you need a phone that alerts you. Either that or you do need to carry it because you're expecting calls. Maybe I missed something.
Yeah. There was definitely some drama added 😅 Like needing to look something up and going to your desktop PC over and over when you clearly have a laptop... I have several dumb phones that I switch my SIMs (T-Mobile & Verizon) between. I have never missed calls or voicemails unless I ignored them on purpose. Texting on a flip phone is also not as hard as is portrayed in this video...
Nice vid but the root of many problems nowadays reside in the mentality behind the next words:
1:10 "It takes a long time to write text"
We live in a society where it was forced on us the idea that things need to be fast and we must have as much as possible of everything. What is wrong about spending 2 minutes sending a message? Nobody's gonna die, you won't lose 100000 US$ and your friends won't get angry. Why the need to hurry?
Can't say I disagree with any of that
We chose smartphones. We didn’t choose social media apps becoming an algorithm driven, dopamine producing slot machine.
I don’t spend hours on my messaging apps. I don’t spend hours reading ebooks, but social media apps absolutely suck me in for hours on end.
It brings back memories when texting with T9. Also it isn’t that difficult. Plus we don’t have to text a lot and we can just make a quit 2 second call if we need to. It you purchased unlimited minutes. I’d say learn the T9 and keep it short and simple. Pick a time of the e day to purposefully get on your computer to do work or research and have a notebook you use consistently to record thoughts and ideas and go to the library.
you could download music to your apple watch for when you’re running!
More and more people are doing this now mostly bc of Trend but tbh in the long run just being able to close the phone is going to help.
Dude! Magic sunglasses at 4:05!
I only use my smartphone for banking apps, food ordering apps and navigation.
I have wanted to try this for nearly 2 yrs. but I couldn’t afford a second phone and if I could I wouldn’t hear the end of my husbands rants. My son upgraded his phone so I took possession of his old phone (iPhone 11) and turned into a dumb phone. I can’t wait to see how it turns out.
You didn't have to resort to a brick-phone, you could have just uninstalled everything on your iPhone, or even better, use the watch you are wearing as your sole comms. That's what I do, I use the watch and have forgotten all the rest....
Sad that you are so addicted to your smart phone. Real life would be better if these things were never invented to enslave us. Being "connected" all the time means you are not living life!
before technology people still had issues and were ignoring eachother. tech is not the problem
I'm almost 52 years old and I can tell you for 100% that smart phones have made people more out of touch, rude and ignorant! I miss the days when we all had basic phones that didn't even have texting yet! People were more in the moment and actually were paying attention to what was going on around them. People are more self absorbed from social media. I saw it getting really bad on 2008 came around.
@@Shannon-uj2yg I agree!
FACT
Should just get a flip phone with podcast and better group msgs
You mean you couldn’t figure out T9 texting again in less than week? It’s like riding a bike, you never forget! You should try going without the iPhone again and this time check your voicemail from time to time
I actually only used T9 for a year when I was younger. The voicemail part is hilarious to me because I had to remember how to listen to voicemail again without it being visually displayed on my iPhone.....
Which model have youtube...I just want keep UA-cam in a flip phone ???
Dude idk if I could do a day without my phone I kind of rely on it for everything from my train pass to get to work, paying for food instead of carrying my cards, having my vaccination card on there, watching my shows instead of the tv, doing my homework when I don’t have access to a computer, using the flashlight to not use the light in the room, probably more but it’s crazy how much use I get out of it I mean I could probably do it but I wouldn’t want to 😂
T9 is what we used. Texting was a Breeze
You can set limits on your smartphone so it cuts you off whenever you hit your daily limit. Phone stuff still works snd so does texting. Learn to use the tool and have self control
I don’t disagree that there are tools. But I think it is too easy to just hit “ignore limit for today”
Get a more reliable dumb phone set up with voicemail properly set up… Nokias 6300 is a good choice. Oh yes iPhone 5S or iPhone SE good choice.
Another thing I do is a hotspot from my Nokia to my iPhone. So I have my iPhone when I need it. But my primary device is now a dumb phone. Best of both worlds. Mainly offline. GPS maps and saved Spotify playlists also work without an internet connection.
It means I carry around two phones but I’m more intentional with my use. Now I think of my iPhone as more of a computer with a touchscreen than a phone. And my dumb phone is a phone and portable wifi modem.
For music purposes, i would use an ipod, my recommation would be an 5th gen ipod classic
wow ..Great content
So, you didn’t do much preparation for this video you could’ve found a phone that allowed you to do what you needed to do for your work. There are “dumb” phones that do great things. The decision to make the switch has to come from a place of genuine desire to do it. You ragged on the entire experiment and sprinkled in a few good points. The whole point of a nonsmart phone is to be able to live in the moment and understand that you may not need Chipotle points. Your mindset wasn’t to decompress from smart phones or consumption of media. If you had to give up your smart phone you would figure it out. I am Not able to have my phone this week and the fact that those who I want to get in touch with I get in touch with, and those who need to get in touch with me make sure that they do so.
Most people don't want to hang out anymore and have fun! Besides, lost and gossiping. Like hey let's go fishing. Are hey let's go camping.
Why did you not just swap the SIM?
In my case... I dont get many calls anyway ... so a dumb phone would be better lol.... If I want to talk to someone I'll call them ( good old days) ...
I miss the days of talking on the phone! I remember when no texting was offered back in the day. I'm almost 52, so I miss just talking to people on my flip. Texting sucks!!!!
Ok this video was almost a year ago, but I still gotta ask, do. Any flip phones have any step tracking, only flip phone we have is one back in the 1999 but I wonder if the new ones have it
Maybe a smart watch? Or a gps specific watch like a garmin?
@@techno_eclipse aight i will look into it, thx
I really dont miss texting on those things haha
Great video, although I disagree about not having your phone always.
Always have your phone. An emergency may arise.
I don't use fast-food apps! I'm switching to a flip phone. I'm done with smart phones
Get a tiny point and shoot camera, fits in pocket, no SAR radiation and better photos
I’m interested in this idea. SAR radiation is something I know very little about, I’ll do a little more research tomorrow morning.
I had a flip phone for most of my 20s.... been there done that 😅
digital minimalism is my philosophy too
It’s a better way to live
try to do this with cat s22
Did I miss out? What happened to your purple iPhone 11?
My carrier had a deal where if you add a line they give you a free iphone 13, my sister, mom, and wife didn't want it, so I wasn't about to pass up a free upgrade.
No one "needs" "rewards" from a store.
I had this problem and got an iPad with Wi-Fi + Cellular.
Do you find it a pain in the ass to carry around an iPad all day? I know it would drive me nuts.
@@Shannon-uj2yg actually no , I have a mini that’s extremely small and easy to carry and iPad 9th gen fits in my bag like a clipboard . And I use it for daily thing like keeping up with receipts to where I’ve been
Flip phone the best ❤
Most of us actually need a smartphone without social media or video games.
You should have got a jitterbug phone. 😊
fun fact: it would be enough to turn off the data connection on your iPhone
Maybe don’t get a $30 dollar feature phone. That’s the equivalent of a random Chinese companies budget smart phone.
Buying a flip phone in 5 months
Wish me luck
And the funny thing is this will be consumed on a smart phone 😅
I know.... It's an uphill battle for sure
Turn off all notification, leave twitter ETC , you will be 90% there
I hate to say this, my Friend, People do Steal 30$ phones too.
I meant to say that there is also way less valuable information on that phone
Aren't you wearing a smartwatch?
I wish i could donwgrade XD .. but i literally need IOS Apps to be able to Work at my company .. iam glued to the phone otherwise i wouldnt get paid .. XD ..
Flip phone and an iPad??
You can watch UA-cam ...... I do it on mine....
Impossible for me to do that. I do SO MANY things with my smartphone that I can’t. And I don’t care about social medias except some time here and there on twitter
Get your phone and toss it in the river, fk it.
Get your life back!!!!
The flip phones have bluetooth and can hotspot thats all we need
The Light Phone 2 allows for that
This feels like an ad haha, just a phone I have been trying out, that has those two features. Although the phone is $300.......
Check Lightphone.
Basically u urself are using latest iphone and latest apple watch 😁 apart from this experiment.. How will i be inspired from u to get on minimalism/ essentialism side
I actually got the iPhone for free! I added someone to my phone plan and t-mobile was running a promotion to trade in your old phone and get an iPhone 13 for free! Thanks for watching
@@techno_eclipse that make sense 👍👍
Just get a cellular Apple Watch. Works great.
I feel sad watching this really thought you were going to change permenantly to the basic phone, it seems to me there were way more positives to using it than negatives, now you will just go back to being a slave to the smart phone 😢
There are other ways, check out some more recent videos. Thanks
SHOUT OUT TO MY DRUG DEALERS FOR USING A FLIP PHONE
Lol
🤣try using contactless payments😉 on the dumb phone🤣
You replaces smartphone whit smartphone
I can't tell if you were genuinely emotional over missing some calls, or if you were "influencer" emotional
Genuinely upset. This was several months ago, but I had recently been down sized and the call I missed was a call back from a job. It ended up working out ok, but it scared me thinking I could miss a call of that severity.
Weak
Agreed
No way am I downgrading to a flip phone when I have an Iphone 7. It's more for just calling & watching youtube lol. I need it for e-mail notifications when my monthly bill is due because I was forced to sign up online for my cell & internet service. I have apple car play. If I don't know where a place in I simply plug my iphone in & use google maps on it to go to the said location & it transfers on a big screen in front.
Also when I go to the stores & I am picking up things for my friends & family, I send them pics of the item so this way they can confirm if they want it or not asap. Same thing I want something. I'll send friends or family a pic of what I want. Lets say I want to call friends, I can talk or I can talk to them on video. Can't do that on a flip phone. Then I have friends in Europe, I use the whats app to message, call or video call them. Can't do that with the flip phone. I just got a new battery for my iphone 7 after 5 years. So it'll last another 5.
First!!!
Please stop it
I will, I am so sorry, deleting this video now
Buy a brickphone
So another failure
