@@FunLewis Probably the second with the current trajectory , I'd say there is diminishing returns for Russia to end up fully in control of Ukraine rather than just the Oblasts with stronger ties to Russia anyway, What will be interesting is if Russia demands more at the negotiating table this time around than its original stated objectives, Ie Autonomy under a Russian shield for those 4 oblasts, the reduction of the Ukrainian Military to non threatening levels and the total rejection of NATO within Ukraine in perpetuity..
Since that initial position the Russians have spent a lot of Blood and wealth to potentially get back to that same starting point assuming they do win out in the end, I could see them adding a heafty bill for war reparations onto the list and in the worst case attempt to Annex Odessa and the surrounding coastline at the negotiating table to give them a land bridge to Transnastria and land locking the remains of Ukraine in the process.

That depends on the terms of the guarantees, and who gives them.
Britain and France went to war in 1914, and again in 1939, to fulfil their obligations (to Belgium and Poland, respectively) under security guarantees. The cost to Britain and France was huge, but victory was ultimately achieved on each occasion.
The US went to war in Vietnam, subsequently in Afghanistan, having given guarantees in each instance. When they got bored with fulfilling those guarantees, they just packed up and went home.
The lesson: some guarantees are worthwhile; some aren’t worth the paper on which they are written; but if the guarantee bears the signature of the British or French government, it is bankable; the same is not true, sadly, of the US government.

Scenario one, russia defeats the Ukraine after a full scale general mobilisation and they roll up to the borders of poland, Lithuania, latvia, Estonia and Romania... We talk about nuclear exchanges for 50 years whilst the russian ehnic demographic continues to fail and they capitulate inwardly knowing they fouldnt feild a large enough army to effectively challenge the entire of nato. Russia becomes several smaller nations instead of a federation and we manage them.
Scenario two... The Ukrainians win by some miracle and continue making incursions inside russian territory much like kursk but with the russians retreating rather than counterattacking.
Russia realises that it could never field another army this size again due tk its failing population and begins to operate erratically from a governmental level... They launch first to cover their retreat. We choose not to retaliate at a nuclear level and instead shun them for their use of such weapons... China abandons russia. The rest of the world follow suit... Russia collapses inwardly and seperates into several smaller nations instead of a federation.
Either way... There is no option for russia now where they come out of this looking like the terrifying force it once was. And i fear for the Ukrainian people who have fighting so hard against such odds... That they are the last line. That if they fall everything everywhere will change.
Let's hope a "deal" might actually be reached... And none of these two barbaric scenarios play out.
They've proven that they are the third superpower... Not the second.

How could Ukrainians ever let a government in Russia’s sphere of influence stay in power after the war? After the russian dominated parts are gone? If that’s what Putin is aiming for, only the first alternative, total capitulation will do the trick. It’s hard to see any other alternative where Putin has any influence whatsoever over Ukrainians in non-occupied territories. If sphere of influence is his goal, he must take Kiev. No deal will do, it’s too late for that.

Or do only Russians count? Ukrainians in Ukraine should be quiet, but how should they go down?
There's one thing the supporters of Russia somehow never can answer.
If only the ethnic composition counts - how on earth can they think that there will be something similar to the Russian Federation in the decades to come?
If Russians can vote themselves out of a country whenever they want - then this has to be the rule for everybody. And you can imagine how small Russia will become.
Or this is only for Russians - but this works only if they see themselves as something superior to the rest of the human race. And I hope how the rest of the world solved these master r*ce fantasies the last time somebody tried to make them real.
