  • Buongiorno! :D
    Next on our list of supercar stories, we turn to the most obscure of the pack, the Bugatti EB110, a brief revival of the legendary motoring marque which was placed onto one of the most technologically advanced machines ever to hit the tarmac, but one whose story was prematurely ended due to factors far beyond its control.

    I don't know where you got the info that the EB110 had 4 sequential turbos with two smaller and two larger. In fact, if you look at photos of the exhaust manifolds, you'll see each turbo is spooled by 3 cylindres, which meant they were engaged at all times. The current Chiron has sequential turbos but not the EB110. Also, the EB110 Supersport hit 60 mph in 3.4 seconds, not 4.4.

    I always found the marketing and launch of the EB110 a touch confusing. Ettore Bugatti was from Milan and built his cars in Alsace, a German speaking region of France. The EB110 was designed and built in Modena, Italy albeit with French contributors from the likes of Aerospatiale and Michelin. Yet they chose to launch it in French Racing Blue, they used the tricoleur a lot in the marketing and as you show, the launch was in Paris. I wonder how the French thought about all of this - an Italian car masquerading as a French car. Compared to VW era Bugatti, now Franco German and built in Alsace they don't seem to dewll too much on the cars national origin with their marketing apart from the use of French Racing Blue on special editions. Alsace is befitting of the brands current ownership but with the EB110, the overtly French push seemed at odds when marketing what was essentially an Italian car with arguably an Italian badge... No wonder it failed. Glorious car though

    I’ve never thought of the modern Bugatti’s as beautiful designs, more, they look heavy and rather underwhelming… not helped by the need to have the Bugatti grill included in the design… a grill that could never be included with an aerodynamic shape that would look good.

    • @davekennedy6315
      @davekennedy6315 Рік тому +6

      Those modern Bugattis ARE incredibly heavy and not the best on a track either. They are an impressive engineering achievement (being able to hit such staggering top speeds and also accelerate quicker than any other car while still being very docile and usable no matter the road, the temperature, the weather etc) but what is the actual point of having cars that can do 260mph to getting close to 300mph? Even on the Autobahn from what I've seen the opportunities of hitting 200mph are rare. The first Bugatti hit 253mph, more than enough to take the fastest car in the world tag from McLarens F1 (241mph) and since then they've only got faster and faster? There was a massive difference between the Veyron and F1, the F1 'made do' with a 6ltr V12. The Veyron needed 8ltrs, 16 cylinders and 4 turbos! And that's a big part of the reason why it looks and actually is a big fat ugly blob of a car, it weighs nigh on 2000kg! The F1 was a flyweight and nearly half it's weight. The F1s crazy high top speed wasn't the entire engineering focus of the car. It was designed to be lightweight, agile and powerful and just had that 240mph more as a side effect. The Bugatti was engineered to be the fastest car ever made then all else was designed around that, hence why its so hideously fugly! And still Bugatti keep upping that totally pointless top speed (they've actually broken 300 and it's now 304mph!) Who are they even competing against? Who wants a car that can only be fully opened up on the salt flats?

    I never felt they did justice to the horse shoe plus this Bugatti had no real connection to the founder, it was just a brand. Although rare you can see the EB110 at car meets in the UK such as Goodwood and Silverstone.
    In the flesh you realise that you could do a lot of the work on the car with you bike tool kit. There is no rocket surgery, it is just a lot of metal, plastic and glass with all the problems of rust, the plastics cracking and the fun things that go with the dream of car ownership. Rose joints, that sort of stuff. It is not sophisticated.
    Imagine a parallel future where the EB110 was just deemed a failed kit car and the Bugatti brand forgotten. Imagine if VW had put their badge on the Chiron. I would be okay with that, honest branding.
    Truth is they got rid of Bugatti, dream of Chiron realised.
