I'll add this example. In league of legends, whenever there is a montage of a champion like Blitzcrank or thresh, there will be those guys who have a mid to low rating, who say "I can do that too" and they always get flamed for that, but they have a point. I'm a silver ranked player and every once in a while I have a really awesome hook, that I'm really proud of. The mane difference between my hooks and the ones from the high ranked player is, that he needs two weeks to fill a montage with amazing hooks, while I need half a year. I'm not an inconsistent Challenger player, I'm simply a silver player.
Well put. There's also the factor that playing against lower level opposition opens more opportunities up to make plays, makes executing them easier and has a lower margin for error in being punished for them.
There's also another factor to consider here, people trend to confuse results with quality. Following the example, low elo players usaly abuse those skills casting just on cd (blitz and thresh q) thinking they just hace to pull one succesfull grab to win. But when you face, lets say, a diamond supp main, he's gonna just threat the q to zone the oponent. Sometimes going for the grab is the correct choice but sometimes you need to hold it, maybe because you need to grab another target with more priority (I mean a bronze blitz playing in bronze would land the same amount of q's than a challenger blitz in challenger, the difference is how many hooks would end in one of their teammates being killed). Extending the example to real pro-play, sometimes a supp would look awesome being on point with every skillshot and sometimes would look aweful just casting them on cd and missing almost everything. That doesnt mean he is playing better in the first case, maybe the grab isnt as necesary for the team to work so he can just hold til he has a sure hook. Or maybe his team relies on that thresh/blitz for the initiation, so he has to go with harder ones in order for the teamcomp to work. Most low elo players (and therefore most viewers) dont differentiate they playstyles so just argue inconsistency. I think a great example of that is the community view on sOAZ during most of the season.
nehmanator333 It's not about who has what percent, it's how much of their skill they use every game. Faker just has a higher cap, so if he has a normal game he plays good and is probably still better than most players, but if he goes beyond(what other players need to get on his normal level) he goes god mode and does whatever he did to Ryu.
I am thorougly enjoying your Thorin's Thoughts series. I was never into analysing and further in-depth discussions about esports. I just watched the games as they progressed and never thought outside the box. Your videos really do open up the "narrow-minded me". Keep it up, Im really enjoying it!
+AzraeltheRightous no actually i understand their point. lots of content creators have high pitched, passionate, loud voices to drive their points and (sometimes) compensate for lack of content depth. it is easy to fall asleep listening to thorin compared to, say, brofresco for example. thorin on the other hand, has well thought content, and delivers it in a calm, confident manner, resulting in sone people feeling warm and cozy in company of his podcasts/vlogs
WUB Az_modAn Sir, i myself do have more of a soothing relaxing voice, i understand very well what the other guy was trying to say and what effects it has on other people, so i agree ^^
AzraeltheRightous when he first left ongamers I would just rewatch reflection interviews and now theres new shit every day lol- when it rains it pours with thorin I guess
it's because of the amount of shit he can talk... Think of all these videos and the topics they cover.. most are minuscule topics and he expands into it to the point it is just plain rubbish.
uh pretty sure deep analysis of the reasoning behind vague terms like consistency and explaining the actual value of it in a pro setting is not rubbish
beedee211 the depth of the analysis makes this series a lot more than "rubbish" imo, but i guess if you wanna call it rubbish, its watever. i can't seem to find much redundant information in most of these videos though. also, i hope you realize that small (or minuscule) topics do not equal shallow topics.
I hope you feel better Thorin! Based on your videos, it looks and sounds like you have a cold. Hot tea and soup! And lots of rest! Thanks for the content! I love listening to your opinions even if I disagree just because I appreciate a different perspective and the amount of analysis you include to back up your thoughts. Thanks for all the great work! ^_^
He used to wear a jacket on a lot of shows and videos because he didn't wanna pay for the heat or whatever... I think its still pretty cold wherever he's recording now... which will make your nose run regardless of having a cold or not.
So the bottom line is, that someone is only truly inconsistent when he is consistently inconsistent. Meaning his performance-level is ALL OVER the place ALL the time and he never homes in on a true average. And those cases are very rare.
Hey Thooorin! I thought I would commend while I'm still awake (I explain it, in a moment). I am really interested in everything you say, you're insight is superb, and I really like the style you explain things. I usually have problems falling asleep, but since I watch your videos, my problems are gone. You see, when I get to watch your videos, it's really late at night, and your voice is sooo calming, I can't help but fall asleep. So no offence, I'm not trolling I am telling the truth. Please don't stop making videos, I can finally sleep :D (I watch your videos in the morning, so I will eventually know what you talked about :D )
It's funny that when I saw the title I immediately thought of Pobelter.. I do think he was very inconsistent, though, but in a different light than what Thooorin mentions, tho. Rather than "he's very good, he's just inconsistent" I kinda got the feeling that "yeah, he could be good, but he's way too inconsistent" and given Pobelter, I think that's a huge thing to be surpassed because it's very hard to know what to expect from him in game... And that was one of the many many problems that EG lineup had (too bad for me as Krepo did drag my sorry arse to suffer a bit with that one), I think Innox was in a somewhat similar situation whereas, yeah, he DID have these two or three games where he was amazing, but his average was just too low and EG was very much not in a position to make his champion pool (that wasn't necessarily narrow, but had almost nothing that was in the meta at the time) work. All in all, I was a bit sad.. would've liked to see maybe one more split of that lineup, but with, say, Pr0lly instead of Pobelter.. but even then, there'd be Innox and Helios to sort out...
As someone who doesn’t like leaving negative comments, it always irked me how “analysts” would call players inconsistent when they usually have mediocre to bad performances. That just means they are consistently low level players. For me, inconsistency would be when someone has a one off performance every 3-5 games, be it good or bad. But since it always is used in a negative sense, it would usually mean someone played bad compared to how good they are. It should really only be used for rookie players or maybe someone like bwipo who seems to limit test a bit. Anyways it’s pretty cool to find this video that addresses something I’ve always thought.
A lot of the times a person is called inconsistent because they're generally just aggresive risk taking players, who will either get really fed or feed a lot, of course there overall performance may be around the 50% mark as it's the top of the top LCS teams who play very passive games against each other, but the inconsistent player is the one who even in these high level games takes more risks, so he is the person who gets the more dots around the 20/80%.
the consistency issue and how people interpret it is likely to change this season cause of subs being allowed from game to game and scouting is likely to improve too, at least in the west and specifically in na if that happens then potential will actually be used in the correct context soon enough when any of the lcs streams are online there's also a misunderstanding as to how players develop, thankfully you brought up doublelift, who you've assessed is a great adc, but he has flaws in his game that simply cant be removed, at the same time they make him the great player that he is that warrants having a team built around him, a coach or manager simply has to find the correct skillsets to match with his which i think has already been done to some degree with having aphro support him there's this idea that players arrive as blank slates with mechanics good enough to be a pro and any nuances in their game like decision making, champion pools and playstyle can be changed or altered drastically instead of simply expecting to improve on the things they already do well and simply give them tools to work around their flaws mistakes can be cut out, target selection can be improved, neutral objective calls can be coached into a team and so can set pieces, changing who a player is does not happen tho and attempts to do so rarely succeed i cant comment if any of this is taken into consideration when an organisation decides to recruit, for example a team like gambit/m5 simply had all the players click together intuitively cause their skillsets were very complimentary and they had the same approach to teamfights relative to each of their roles meanwhile at tsm i get the sense bjergsen is being asked to do more than he is comfortable with by being made shot caller, and that if tsm want him to succeed at that then they should get a carry top laner who would draw jungler attention away from bjerg for better reasons than shutting down the one solid cog in the team who can go even in spite of most of what is thrown at him tho iunno what happens if they get an ace jungler, perhaps its the only missing piece from that team what shr did at worlds has not gone unnoticed either and everyone should surely be interested to see what china does this year with the influx of korean stars to that region the implications there could change how coaches/managers go about team building completely in the future now riot just need to sort out how transfers work and we will have moneyball: league edition i've rambled i have no clue if this makes sense if you've gotten this far then i love you great content thorin
Thorin, have you considered getting a pop filter? In this video it's really noticeable (10:0 - 10:04 e.g.), might be a nice up to your audio. Yo, and do please keep pumping these out, enjoying them.
I feel like ScreaM is a poster boy for this discussion. Especially in 2014, ScreaM wasn't an inconsistent tier 1 player. He was just a middle tier 2 player with a couple good games against better players.
I think that you could explain the concept of not projecting greatly when you have a small sample space using the law of large numbers. Otherwise, I really liked this video.
Do you have any plans on covering Smite? Not as a regular thing, but maybe try to gain some insight on the esports scene of smite given that the season one world championships just ended today? I don't know if you tend to cover things outside of League and CS:GO (I did see a dota related video earlier).
I agree with just about everything that he said the one thing would like to say though is that kerp i would consider inconsistent. im not saying if he were consistent he would be a better player but for his team they have no idea how kerp will play in any game making it difficult to have a good strategy for the game For example a player that i would say is very consistent is dyrus from TSM. He never pulls off massive plays but he also dose not lose horrifically in lane. Because of this TSM can say ok were going to have dyrus go about even and then team fight. for Kerps team they need to go lets pray to god Kerp plays well or were going to lose. Thorin explained it as a belt curve but kerp i would say has more of a line. If we say he is a tire 2 player i would say he has more tire 1 and tire 3 performances that tire 2 so if he were consistent he would still be a tire 2 player but for the team it would be better. Also kerp will do really well in one game and then playing as the same champ against the same champ and against the same player will do bad. he will win by a lot and lose by a lot in the same match up. This is why I would say Kerp is inconsistent.
This is actually a good explanation. I'm trying to see when a person is inconsistent after watching this video, since I think Thorin's point is valid, but then it leaves the question open as to what inconsistency actually is. His NBA example was great for that, but I think Kerp is a good e-sports equivalent, and the way you phrased it is perfect. Being inconsistent is averaging at a teir of play but more frequently playing above or below that level than at that level.
I imagine Thorin having two huge whiteboards in his appartment where he constantly ranks all the pro players and teams of CS and LoL. No way he got this all in his head.
consistensy is often compared with the expectation we have of a player. because bjergsen went hem first 5 matches in lcs with some sick plays and good farm. we expect that as his consistensy. even tough it is 5 matches of the 1000 he playes
interesting you talked about byali, hltv put him as number 13 in their 2014 player-ranking because of his consistency. but i agree, its dangerous to always talk about consistency and i think it could be a reason for overrating players.
If these pros fix their "problems with the real life" they propably wouldn't play CS or LoL that much or that good for that matter. What helped them becoming great players might be the same reasons why they choke under pressure or on stage.
8Sephirot8 nah, he does never perform at his best in "thorin´s thoughts". He waits calmly like a feline until SI comes to deliver all his potential and skills, id say he is more of like a clutch player. Not even wurf to tryhard in non important games ^^-

You realize that the point of those comments is just to troll, right? I'm pretty sure they just want to start an arguement instead of proving a point.
"Inconsistent" often seems like a euphemism casters use to describe bad long-term performance.
I am thorougly enjoying your Thorin's Thoughts series. I was never into analysing and further in-depth discussions about esports. I just watched the games as they progressed and never thought outside the box. Your videos really do open up the "narrow-minded me". Keep it up, Im really enjoying it!
No confusion about Thorin's consistency, love the videos, great insight as always
I love this kind of whispering in your videos it adds this mystical feeling and i get really curious
Your voice is so relaxing! I will listen to this again as soon as I go to bed :).
sometimes that sonds very creepy O_O or more like "ur so boring you are making me fall asleep" ;P
+AzraeltheRightous no actually i understand their point. lots of content creators have high pitched, passionate, loud voices to drive their points and (sometimes) compensate for lack of content depth. it is easy to fall asleep listening to thorin compared to, say, brofresco for example.

You are so well spoken. Unbelievable. I wish I could explain myself the way you do :D
This actually slightly changed my perspective on this topic. Thanks :)
holy shit man youre a fucking machine with this content

I hope you feel better Thorin! Based on your videos, it looks and sounds like you have a cold. Hot tea and soup! And lots of rest!
Thanks for the content! I love listening to your opinions even if I disagree just because I appreciate a different perspective and the amount of analysis you include to back up your thoughts. Thanks for all the great work! ^_^
He used to wear a jacket on a lot of shows and videos because he didn't wanna pay for the heat or whatever... I think its still pretty cold wherever he's recording now... which will make your nose run regardless of having a cold or not.
I agree that the cold can make your nose run. But his eyes look particularly tired in this video and he seems to just look a bit more worn than usual.
30:50 lmao, that analogy.
At this rate there could be a website where all the creative content is just Thorin's, and no other site would currently be able to compete with it.
Thank you based Thoorin. Can't wait for the next video
So the bottom line is, that someone is only truly inconsistent when he is consistently inconsistent. Meaning his performance-level is ALL OVER the place ALL the time and he never homes in on a true average. And those cases are very rare.

"i don't even know where that analogy was going, but fuck you!" HAHAHAHAH
At 31:00 this was the best thing Thorin said!
So does flusha's mouse lifting count as consistency (sarcasm)
It's funny that when I saw the title I immediately thought of Pobelter.. I do think he was very inconsistent, though, but in a different light than what Thooorin mentions, tho. 'Did the english language kill your dad?' freaking hilarious.
15:45 There's a psychological term for that. It's called Confirmation Bias.
A lot of the times a person is called inconsistent because they're generally just aggresive risk taking players, who will either get really fed or feed a lot, of course there overall performance may be around the 50% mark as it's the top of the top LCS teams who play very passive games against each other, but the inconsistent player is the one who even in these high level games takes more risks, so he is the person who gets the more dots around the 20/80%.
the consistency issue and how people interpret it is likely to change this season cause of subs being allowed from game to game
and scouting is likely to improve too, at least in the west and specifically in na
if that happens then potential will actually be used in the correct context soon enough when any of the lcs streams are online
there's also a misunderstanding as to how players develop, thankfully you brought up doublelift, who you've assessed is a great adc, but he has flaws in his game that simply cant be removed, at the same time they make him the great player that he is that warrants having a team built around him, a coach or manager simply has to find the correct skillsets to match with his which i think has already been done to some degree with having aphro support him
there's this idea that players arrive as blank slates with mechanics good enough to be a pro and any nuances in their game like decision making, champion pools and playstyle can be changed or altered drastically instead of simply expecting to improve on the things they already do well and simply give them tools to work around their flaws
mistakes can be cut out, target selection can be improved, neutral objective calls can be coached into a team and so can set pieces, changing who a player is does not happen tho and attempts to do so rarely succeed
i cant comment if any of this is taken into consideration when an organisation decides to recruit, for example a team like gambit/m5 simply had all the players click together intuitively cause their skillsets were very complimentary and they had the same approach to teamfights relative to each of their roles
meanwhile at tsm i get the sense bjergsen is being asked to do more than he is comfortable with by being made shot caller, and that if tsm want him to succeed at that then they should get a carry top laner who would draw jungler attention away from bjerg for better reasons than shutting down the one solid cog in the team who can go even in spite of most of what is thrown at him
tho iunno what happens if they get an ace jungler, perhaps its the only missing piece from that team
what shr did at worlds has not gone unnoticed either and everyone should surely be interested to see what china does this year with the influx of korean stars to that region
the implications there could change how coaches/managers go about team building completely in the future
now riot just need to sort out how transfers work and we will have moneyball: league edition
i've rambled
i have no clue if this makes sense
if you've gotten this far then i love you
great content thorin

This one sounds like an ASMR video, so much whispering and lip smacking
Don't you love Thorin's sensual lip smacking filling your ears?
Muffin Mafioso I got a hard-on for the insightful commentary and excessive game knowledge
Muffin Mafioso yes I do
Do you have any plans on covering Smite? Not as a regular thing, but maybe try to gain some insight on the esports scene of smite given that the season one world championships just ended today? I imagine Thorin having two huge whiteboards in his appartment where he constantly ranks all the pro players and teams of CS and LoL. No way he got this all in his head.
ok what is the eye test ?
consistensy is often compared with the expectation we have of a player. because bjergsen went hem first 5 matches in lcs with some sick plays and good farm. we expect that as his consistensy. even tough it is 5 matches of the 1000 he playes

MOAR THOUGHTS! :D
Can you explain why you only mention mid laners when giving examples in league why are they so special?
Inconsistency in league of legends = consistent problems that are only visible in certain situations. Simple as that.
Loved the language analysis! XDDDD
inconsistency = high volatility in performance
easy as that
If these pros fix their "problems with the real life" they propably wouldn't play CS or LoL that much or that good for that matter. What helped them becoming great players might be the same reasons why they choke under pressure or on stage.
The signature of mediocrity is chronic inconsistency.
he looks and sounds VERY tired. he needs more sleep
You don't knock every one out of the park.
Thooorin u are still pretty consistent :P
8Sephirot8 Hahaha, made my day.
8Sephirot8 nah, he does never perform at his best in "thorin´s thoughts". He waits calmly like a feline until SI comes to deliver all his potential and skills, id say he is more of like a clutch player. Not even wurf to tryhard in non important games ^^-
'English language killed my dad'
I don't even :)
seems like all thorin videos freeze my browser but no other youtuber xD
Isn't Kerp the benchmark of inconsistency then. I'd consider that an inconsistent tier 2 player.
thorin asmr
I love you Thoorin but pleeeeeeeeeeease take a break if you need it. ; ;
thoorin aint no bitch.
Thorin looking hot 🔥
League of Legends inconsistency and not a mention of Darien? He always seem to act godlike when he's not playing great.
I don't know dude. Darien is more like godlike from the beginning and then slowly got shitty as the time passed by.
I'd say the best example of a player with consistency issue is Diamondprox. His dominance primarily comes from his ability to innovate the meta, so every time other teams catch up to him, he becomes ineffective as hell.
Darien is dead, maybe he wanted to keep it to the present? :P And honestly that isnt really an issue with inconsistency, at least i whouldnt wanna tough that. different world, he just did outside the box and gabit was a wonder initself kinda and me need 2 pee soprry
Shox can Get good if ex6tens is hes leader
Thorin was too thug for me this episode ua-cam.com/video/UcQYSuFigg0/v-deo.html
Also I really enjoy all the recent content Thorin, great work.
Thorin you need a blackboard :3
I don't see colour when it comes to boards.
Thooorin aww a reply ~ i love your videos ~ ^_^
You talk you talk you talk in the end the say absoluetly nothing lol. It's kinda hilarious.
Shave u will look better
who actually/honestly cares about this middle aged pale guy "breaking down" a video game more than it should be?
n1
So hltv kiddies are finally here?
Who the fuck is thorin?
