thorin, after watching more and more videos from you and in particular this one, I have realised that you are a great man. what you speak of in this video is fear and how the ego deals with fear. The rejection of fear, the hate of it, pulls one to spiral down into a cycle of fear and hate. It is the recognition of the fear, the acceptance of it, in a sense the love of it, that fear exists but has no power. The opposite of the Ego is the Now, complete creative improvisation. You mention that in your interviews you may think of something completely different and you want to see if you and the interviewee have the creative freedom to go with it. I feel this applies to all situations, it is in spontaneous creativity that true greatness is achieved. It is this flow that combined with preparation that spurs one to greatness. Preparation and the mind are useful but when they form constructions and hurdles in front of progression, they become crippling. I absolutely loved when you said that those high PRESSURE moments, those make or break moments are absolutely NECESSARY, these situation are what BREED GREATNESS. Thats why we feel the pressure, thats why we get nervous because we know, this situation is everything. But it is this acceptance of all the pressure and the fears, that one grants oneself the opportunity to grasp everything. When one prepares, accepts the fears, improvises and enjoy the moment, that greatness will come
This may not have been intended, but this is one of the few motivational type speeches/videos I can sit through without a heavy negative emotional reaction. I don't know how you did it when I react to almost everything, but these are some well presented thoughts and perspectives. Much respect
I think its because we know what he is telling us is the truth because he is so unflinchingly mean when someone f**ks up, when he says something nice we know he is being honest.
I enjoy listening to these talks where you take something out from the game world and bring it out to everyday life. Everyone can take advice from those things or from that philosophy that you can take the best out of everything and not feel down or depressed about something you can't change. Also another thing is to learn from one self and basically confront the fears and anxieties and get over them. There was the other video about these kind of thoughts (maybe "Winning mentality"-video) and it got to some pretty deep and important stuff about life. I think that is very inspirational.
the only person that i can download his videos as mp3 and literally listen to them over and over again like i didnt hear radio for 6 months now or i hear is: the winning mentality . confidence . i just want to win . playing to your individual skills and this one over and over. i love this mans content and the way he talk about shit. it is insane how i feel this guy sometimes say the same exact thing that i would say like i sometimes i get goosebumps like shiiiiit thats exactly what i think. would like to meet him someday.
Amazing! Thanks! I've had the same choke problems (as described at around 18:50) while speaking in front of a public (a presentation or whatever). I would feel like I'm beginning to choke and it makes me even more nervous and I choke even harder and it snowballs out of control and before I know it I've given up on what I was doing. I've began to realize this. Some friends told me to not give up when I feel it's beginning to occur. I try to not let it get to me and sometimes I manage... Yeah... Great video, mate. Great.
Great video Thorin, this a very interesting explanation and approach to the problem that i have encountered. I'll try to apply this to my basketball games to relieve pressure i put on myself. Thank you very much, good sir.
I heard a quote from the coach of the Detroit Red Wings when they won in '08 about how they did so well in the playoffs when other top teams in the regular season choked. He said he told the players to treat every game like it's just a regular season game and they did exceptionally. No pressure
There's also the aspect where in high pressure finals that a player or team believes they have to do something crazy to win, and they focus in too hard on bursting in with a bunch of pocket strategies to throw their opponent off guard but in turn the fundamental skill set they utilized to get that far is left behind. Often times if they calm down and play to their strengths they'll be more successful even if they don't ultimately win the series. A Dota 2 example that is so blatantly evident of this is EG vs. VG - Game 3 at TI4: ua-cam.com/video/XaB_ATsXqjQ/v-deo.htmlh23m38s
The idea of not worrying about brief pauses in interviews is also pertinent as the interviewee (particularly for jobs). Don't feel that you have to immediately leap into an answer and know that the short time you take to think about the question is nothing to your interviewer.
Thorin, I have a question. When you first got into e-sports, I am assuming you were just a fan/viewer. As time goes on, you became more passionate for e-sports and watching most of your videos, I can tell you were a person that wanted to share your views and knowledge with others. Although, was it a big decision for you to take the job as an e-sports journalist full time? I assume at the time e-sports wasn't as big as it is now, was your passion so big for e-sports that your must spend all your time following the scene or were you really contemplating a 'real' job?
Think you should point out you meant the C9(dota2) before the roster changes, the current roster might never make consistent final appearances anymore.
Wait, LeBron choked? When? LeBron has never been the person to even want to take a game-winning shot. He got sweeped by the Spurs on a team with Varejao and Ilgauskas and random bums, in the finals against Dallas, I don't even remember him almost taking any shots, he just passed the ball around all the time. It wasn't really even LeBron choking, it was just a combination of 2 items: 1) He always got double/triple teamed by the Mavs and in general, the Mavericks played like straight bitches. The fact that a bunch of no-namers on that Dallas squad got calls that favored them against Flash (DWade) & LBJ was a joke in of itself. 2) This is what LeBron fans will say all the time - he had better shooters on his teams at all times - Mike Miller, Shane Battier, Ray Allen and so on, he would never need to take the shot.
He choked, one of the best player of all time, and certainly the most talented. He never looked the same in final min throughout his career. He's nothing like Brady whose legacy is built on being a clutch player.
michael yang have you been under a rock for the last 5 years when lebron put on some of the most clutch playoff performances of all time and won back to back finals?

if the speaker is on a lower developmental level than you, their logic will seem off or totally wrong
