Elderly and Homeless: Brenda’s Story of Injustice in Grants Pass

  • In this emotional interview, we meet Brenda, a 62-year-old woman forced to live in a tent in Grants Pass. For over three years, Brenda has been moving her tent every 3 to 5 days due to the city's harsh policies against homelessness. This video sheds light on how Grants Pass is at the forefront of criminalizing homelessness, forcing individuals like Brenda to live in constant uncertainty and fear.
Brenda shares her heartbreaking story of being evicted by a slumlord and the struggles she faces daily as a senior trying to survive without stable housing. Despite having good references, the stigma of being homeless prevents her from finding a rental. The constant moving takes a toll on her health, both physically and mentally, as she battles injuries and the stress of potential fines and losing her belongings.
This interview highlights the growing crisis of elderly homelessness, showing how the lack of support and cruel policies only exacerbate the problem. Brenda’s story is a powerful call to action to address the systemic issues contributing to homelessness and to provide real solutions for our most vulnerable populations.
Join us in raising awareness and advocating for change. No one, especially our seniors, should have to endure such inhumanity.

    About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Our groundbreaking educational content reaches millions of people every month. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

The corrupt officials and inhuman policy's which demean any rationalized conception of Constitution are the primary causes of this trauma you speak of. How we could ever get to a point in which a Government takes money hand over fist from tax payer's to support the General Welfare of the citizens. Then proceeds to treat our people of this nation worse than animals. Any respectable criminal court would have no difficulty prescribing guilt in a case which alleges murder, attempted homicide, coercion, embezzlement, civil rights violations etc etc. What this nation's Government and private civilians are doing to these citizen's turned subject's is treason and we can not let this go unpunished any longer. This has been an ongoing collection of betrayal's in which our people can no longer continue exonerate. We have to fight. We have to resist. Our human right to life depends on it.

Yep, when they already were suffering intolerable trauma they lose their home and find themselves on the street. Society needs to change and we need to stop demonising people less fortunate then ourselves and we need to start seriously helping them get back on their feet in sheltered accommodation and homeless villages with all the services that those people need. These people are human and we treat them worse than animals. We need to reflect on ourselves and our society and demand change. This is no way for anybody to live. Very cruel :-(

I have lived homeless since I was twelve years of age as a runaway street kid. For several years until I was conscripted to fight a bush war in South Africa - I had no education and a family who abandoned ship. after the army, I lived in my old car for a few years, and again, when I left South Africa, I lived for two years in a car to survive and feed my family. When I see countries dish out tax money to the world, my brain and soul are wobbly in my head as I cannot understand how this can happen. All I know is that Jesus knows. What you do to your countrymen is what you do unto Jesus.

They “other” others, closing their fists to the needy and the lost. They are actually proud of themselves for doing it. To them it is a dog eat dog world and they are the winners. They spend their energy being paranoid that others are coming to get what they’ve got, no regard for the suffering or realize they would be doing the same thing if it was their family starving or suffering.

In ancient times the elderly were looked up to, cared for and respected, Now anyone over the" ripe old age of 50" is considered elderly, discarded and laughed at. What a joke. Those who treat homeless and elderly like this will actually be the joke in the end.. This country is under the judgment of the Most High God.. She is in survival mode & that will last for a long time even if she gets off the streets. We need affordable housing all thru this country. If homeless have a secure place to sleep& a permanent address then everything else would fall into place with a mentoring program . I helped pay something for them, then wrote me and told me that the organization that was helping, the Christian organization and the place she was staying turned against her. I figured there’s something wrong there if they stopped helping. I figured they wanted my help, but they wanted this person out. that’s when I decided. I can’t do this. I ask if they drink but they said no. If you’re not gonna help yourself, I can’t help you. I couldn’t get involved after that. I was sorry to come to that decision. I said that they have to follow rules. I think about this person and hope that they’re OK. But what do you do? I could’ve helped more, but I’m not throwing my money away either. I’m so ashamed of this country because mental illness, drugs, and alcohol are rampant. They don’t care. Nobody’s perfect. I know that I’m the first one to say that because I’m far from it. That lady is one right there. Go help her! Otherwise, look around. 99% of homeless people are honest, decent and hurting. If they're addicted to something, they're probably trying to numb the pain of being tossed out to die and being treated like crap by people all too happy to blame them for their situation! Same with mental illness. You know, that can include depression, anxiety, PTSD and mental anguish from the trauma of being tossed out to basically fight for your life and having everything that was your life cruelly ripped away. Try imagining how you would feel being in that position. Not very pleasant, is it? Think of how they are fighting just to survive in a society that would happily see them dead - just for the "unpardonable sin" of being too poor to afford the outrageous rents and housing prices that corporate America demands and property owners are all too happy to shore up in hopes of getting a lion's share of the pie. And these people pay the price for this country's greed!!!

I’m homeless and it is because of greed. Only greed. The laziness of the owners who “just want full market value and really just don’t want to do all that paperwork “. That’s exactly what I was told and it hurt when I realized that my SSDI and my being 74 years old were not important enough to the greedy young folks who didn’t give a damn! It hurts to be thrown away.
We worked for more years than those young property owners have lived and now we are only garbage to them.
    It hurts. It’s unfair. It’s wrong. It’s dangerous. It’s unhealthy. It’s depressing. It’s embarrassing.
It’s totally out of our control. There’s no end in sight. It’s frightening.
To be so alone, to still have some self respect & faith in God Almighty but have no idea how we will survive seems very hard to understand just how this once wonderful country could be so far off track.
When I get cold, hungry, frightened, exhausted and have nobody to turn to knowing that the ones who put me out are so willing and able to do it without much thought makes it so much worse.
I’m not garbage. I’m an American, I paid my taxes and kept up my bills. It hurts to be discarded and watch the illegal aliens break the law and get everything handed to them! They receive twice what I do! And I got kicked to the bottom of the list for a home. SO WRONG!!
