- A beautiful full scale replica of the Fokker DR.1 Triplane built by volunteers from the Golden Age of Aviation Museum in Bethel, PA. This aircraft features an actual LaRhone rotary engine and many other details taken from the original design. I love the smell of the castor oil from the total loss oil system as the plane taxi's by. Paint scheme is that of Lothar von Richthofen, the brother of Manfred von Richthofen (the Red Baron).
It's very impressive especially with the LaRhone rotary engine in it. Talk about authentic. Great job guys.
GREAT video!!! It takes a BRAVE person to test fly one of these for the first time. Hats off to the pilot! 👍🏼 It looked like he lost his hat at 8:20.
I've known a few pilots who flew the DR1 and the said it's NOT a pilot friendly plane! Very unstable. Killed a lot of novice pilots.
In the colors of Lothar von Richthofen, the Red Baron's brother.
That's what the description says. It's a real work of art, and good to hear what the original might have sounded like.
finally someone recognised my 40 kills
@@swis9365 Your aircraft was all yellow.
Yassssss!
Well aren't we the brilliant gumshoe?
Wow, I love the sound of them engines. Apart from a childhood fixation with Baron Richthofen, I know very little about aviation but these old birds are sure classy. Great replica, thankyou for the upload.
10, 20, 30, 40, 50 or more... 🎵
Love ❤️ everything about the DR1 🥰 An original Le Rhône rotary engine is a must .
beautiful plane!
Not beautiful.
*LEGENDARY.*
Thanks for posting this superb video of a well-constructed and detailed DR 1 replica !
Greetings from Houston, Texas

He doesn't... really.... there are cutouts inboard on the center wing. The wing skin doesn't come all the way to the fuse. allowing a little bit of sight. Other than that, the pilot does s-turns to see where he is, exactly. During the war, there were ground crews that helped a lot. At the end of the day, those pilots were highly skilled and literally flew by the seat of their panths. Pretty incredible aviators. Those engines were a major pain in the ass. The torque was crazy and bad craftsmanship plagued the DR-1's The Germans readily exchanged the German Oberussel for the French LeRone engines every chance they got. They were more dependable and higher HP.
In 1966 when I was in 5th grade, my entry into the school science fair was about the history of Manfred Von Richthofen. Included was a model of his sleek Albatross along with it's flying capabilities. I was inspired by my dad who was a U.S.A.A.F. pilot and from watching Snoopy tangle with the Red Baron in the comic strips. I later came to appreciate DR1 even more. Everything about it is odd and unconventional. That's the beauty of it. I've watched this video over and over and marvel at the vintage pictures. A flying DR1 is surreal to me. I see past the original intent of these machines of war and gaze in wonder of the pilots, engineers and the raw, sheer beauty of these creations.
well, that is something !! congrats on a great job; great color scheme too
The Red Baron’s brother: not quite so bold...
I just visited this place over Colombia day weekend. Great museum, really nice guys that weren’t annoyed to answer questions, the dog Obi was a great host, and for $7 you can’t go wrong. If you’re into old aviation this place is soooo worth visiting!
I'll bet not many originals were as pristine and clean as this one!
+parafan There is no Original Fokker DR 1 left in the World. "Only" replica's
I said "were", not "are".
parafan sorry. My Mistake
The paint-job still retains elements of the original Schwerin factory finish.. Amazing to see this, thank you so much for sharing!
Unbelievably impressive and beautiful. Thank you for posting this- listen to that engine ROAR!!!
WOW! What a beauty. Great job. Thanks for sharing.
Wow. Had no idea the cylinders rotated aswell. What a feat of engineering
,that is what a rotary does
@@roberthayseniorcounselcomm6523 yeah man, I watched the video.
Superb bit of videography, keeps me enthused for my own quarter-scale triplane build, cheers
Beautiful replica! A job well done.
What??? You guys are only 2 hours from me. I am definitely coming to see you this summer!
If they made a modern version of this plane with a more powerful engine, it would make one hell of a stunt plane
The Dr.1's high rate of climb and it's ability to do flat half-spins would be crowd pleasers
Rotary engines aren't very strong
Thats why I said, "with a more powerful engine"
Rotary engines are actually quite powerful. They run very smoothly and they have very high torque. The leRhone 9j is a 900 cui engine the reason it has a low horsepower is because of the low rpm (1400) and that’s why they all have massive propellers
Not sure the frame would be able to handle too high of speeds but if they could figure that out I agree
Grimes is alot of fun if you like the old planes. A late friend Frank used to drive his 1928 model A roadster there he was the original owner of and his pilots license was signed by the Wright Bros too.. He introduced me to the place. They have great events there for those that love vintage planes.
A pleasure to see and hear the finish on the aircraft was possibly much better that than anything that came out of the Fokker factory. I really liked the fokker nuts as well.
Thank you
imagine how was to see these beauties taking off to combat back in WW1 times
I agree with Steve. What a plane. Man talk about flying by the seat of your pants. These were as bare as you can get. Outstanding craftsmanship.
Fantastic!
Such a smooth engine sound
That is beautiful!
These planes were designed to kill people. They are weapons plain and simple and yet there is something almost toy-like, kind of comical about their appearance. The bright colors add to that impression. And.. another yet, they are still awesome. Beautiful plane. Well done. I love it.
Dave Bloxham they were not designed to kill. Initially they were designed for surveillance.
The Steaming Bean The triplane was never designed for reconnaissance
Fighters were designed to shoot down bombers and reconnaissance planes to defend the airspace, bombers were designed to kill.

Great footage, fantastic replica very good attention to detail. It would be interesting what would one of these be worth?
I’ve seen a website which sells Fokker Dr1 kits for around 10k - 15k, ofc u got to build it yourself
Majestic.
Sweeeeeeeet! Beautiful!
VERY impressive
In an ugly world a beautiful sight !
hollup aint those my plane colors?
Love it!
How many LaRhone rotaries are still available? I've only seen one in an airplane Paul Mantz flew at an air show decades ago. I'll never forget the castor oil smell and the stuff that blew back toward the tail. Thank goodness for the cowling that kept it blowing along the bottom and not in the pilots face.
Very interesting details !
I would imagine film crews would kill to have a period-accurate, fully functional WWI aircraft available; perhaps the Golden Age museum could rent out aircraft for use in feature films and documentaries as an additional source of income? Heck, even demonstration flights at airshows might be viable. And it would give them greater capacity to preserve original war birds and/or construct new ones. =)
Film Maker Peter Jackson has created a whole squadron of WW1 aircraft for that very purpose. Can be seen at Omaka Aerodrome just out of Blenheim, South Island, New Zealand.
Great job, valve clearance's look excessive sounds beautiful
it has a single push - pull rod and a single rocker for both inlet and exhaust, when one valve is open the other has a lot of clearance..... = to the valve lift.
great work
10 years ago now.....this thing still around?
awesome!
Please accept my comment as a ‘thumbs up’ only there were 747 thumbs up when I saw the video which happens to be the number of of my favourite airliner lol! But yes excellent video great to see a real life Fokker triplane.
Great video, and great job on the aircraft; I'm surprised this is in Bethel-I'm less than an hour away.
Masterpiece of Dutch engineering :)
+MTXwhites Yeah, it is a sight for sore eyes for sure. A shame things went down the shitter for the Dutch come WWII. You guys got slapped about pretty bad and are still so salty about it.
+Bapao SevenSix you drive there cars dont you?
Those there cars?
The designer, Rheinhold Platz, was German.... :-)
Rod Parsons And you think he would have acomplish this without the fokker company?
I never knew the whole engine turned!
it has the rotary engine!
Hes very soft on the controls. The Fokker Triplane was a lot more maneuverable than youd think from watching this.
Exquisite!
Great video
Wonder if I could build a replica. I’m good with cars and this year is the first time I could fix my dads Cessna by myself. It would be cool
it takes a lot of courage to fly something so unsafe and still at that time shoot and shoot down enemies
Amazing
it seems crazy to rotate the engine instead of the crankshaft. what was the reasoning?
Os there a version pf this video without the music?
Came here from one of those African aviation compilations
Супер.
Did you guys keep track of your actual build time? What about material and component cost?
Great video! How did you make the empty belt tubes, any close up pics? Also are the trays installed on the MG's, I can't see them for the glare. We are still struggling with our MG set up on our museums DR 1 an DVII, just can't seem to get focused and get everything done.
wish they had shown the entire start up
cute plane
I wonder if there were women once drove this tremendously awesome and classic airplane?
Way more maneuverable than the albatross fighter they had
WHere the heck did they get a LeRhone engine from ?
Almost takes off faster than the Fi Storch
I wonder how hard that is to fly
Enemy ace from DC comics flies one of those planes
I got a vision of those guys during ww1 fighting with honor. like the knights of armor
A little bit bigger and they wud have the real thing.how dumb
What part of "full scale replica" don't you understand?
That image is from 1917 or 1918. 11:29 Why is it a swastika?
Finnish air force
Some German pilots used it as a good luck symbol, as that’s what it was in many cultures before WW2
my opa told me back in the war world war two that is one of his friends was an instructor and he took my opa on a crazy ride to try and make him puke
are there original
No, I think the last original plane was in a museum in Berlin and was destroyed by allied bombing in WWII.
pergunta: como as balas dá metralhadora não pegam na hélice
kilerch play it has a system that disables the trigger when the propeller is in front of the machinegun, it is actually an extremely simple system, the slomoguymade a video on it. I don't know portuguese, but I'm spanish so I could understand what you said.
ua-cam.com/video/faZiS1CYZs0/v-deo.html this explains it
Lovely airplane! Too bad that the machine guns could not be fired. Would have loved to hear them.
Fucking hate that every single time there is a reenactment that there has to be annoying ass music over it
Instructions unclear escorted a zeppelin raid in london
Cool ....... but the music 🎶
Shame it's the Le Rhone 9C instead of the 9J
Agreed.. if you have one handy, we'll build an airplane around it :-)
I just purchased a mostly-completed DR1 project (rigged to fly, with tailwheel, looks like it might have been pranged and restored for static display) from the Commemorative Air Force in Tulsa. Don't know much about the build but it's a replica of 425/17 and it needs struts, a top wing and a powerplant. I'd love to find a non-flightworthy motor to put on it for static display at the local WWI hangar air museum. Do you happen to know a good source for such a thing, and what a ballpark fair price might be? Cheers, and congrats on a beautiful aircraft! What is she like to fly?
Why is it a shame? How does having a different version of the engine diminish the thrill of seeing and hearing this airplane???
Pretty commendable to have an operational Le Rhône on this regardless of the lower output
If I had 3 wishes...
ltcajh 1 wish for each wing?
Anton Herman Gerard Fokker, Tony for friends 😂🤣
There are tons of fights on youtube about which fighter is the best or greatest. The Fokker DR.1 was not the best performing fighter ever, even in it's time. If I could own a fighter plane though, to just fly, it would be the DR.1.
It might not have been the best plane, but it was and still is the COOLEST plane that ever flew! It just looks awesome.
You couldn't pay me to fly this. Landing it is a bitch.
I'd rather have something more stable like the Albatros or the D.VII
brakes not included :)
