We're off-grid in a rural residential zone, with no neighbors. The county doesn't do any maintenance or repair of the roads on this mountain but we're not allowed to privitize the road. We're 40miles away from the city, and because the nearest fire department is 7.5 miles away, we can't get home owner's insurance. We knew most of this before purchasing the land and we own the land and house outright so no mortgage. We had to drill a well 323', we have hardly any topsoil and lots of bedrock and stones we've used for walls. It takes a pioneer spirit to live up here. In spite of some negative points, we're enjoying this place. I'm just disappointed that, since we cant really grow a pasture, my dream of having a couple of donkeys or a mule is gone.
This thanksgiving day, I am thankful I get to watch your Hidden Spring farm videos! Thanks for doing you Chad! Hope you have a wonderful day in Canada!🇨🇦
Great tips, thank you! My family and I are in the process of building our homestead right now, from raw land, it is alot of work. Some tips I would add to your list, things we didn't think about are: the neighbors. It's not fun to think about but if you are going to be putting alot of time, hard work and money into a property you want to have decent neighbors. They will become your community. We unfortunately have a psychopathic neighbor who has bullied me relentlessly, trespassed on our property, moved the property marker, tried to encroach, the list goes on and on. So I would say investigate very well at different times of day. See if there are fences on the property lines as well. So many things to think about. So we will one day be looking for a different location to do this again.
On our farm, it sits on top of one of the largest natural aquifers in the state… and the state has been trying to buy our farm for years just for the water… thankfully, my grandfather was an extremely smart man and the way he set the land up for future generations, the state or any corporation can NEVER just come and take our land through eminent domain or any other BS reason… our land has been in our family since 1887, 2 years before the land run here in Oklahoma… it was deeded before we became a state… and something in the legalese and the way my grandfather set everything up prevents anyone from ever being able to take our land… as long as a member of the family lives on the land or farms it, it’s protected… it can’t be sold to anyone outside of the family either… my niece thought she was going to be smart and sell what she "assumed" was hers when my parents pass… but the land goes to myself and my two brothers… she isn't getting any of the land and she was pissed when she found out… she wanted to sell what she thought was "her portion." But she couldn’t sell it even if she had it except to a member of the family, BLOOD family… she smarted off and said she would just have an arranged marriage to a buyer then… my dad was like, yeah I will fix that you money grubbing little chit… he mother, my brother's ex tried to get some of the land when they divorced… but that didn’t work out to well since my brother didn’t have any rights to the land … my parents are still living… so she put that idea into my nieces head to marry a buyer so she could see it and make a nice chunk of change… our land is worth several million dollars with the water rights we own as well as from the oil we have… we also have a couple acres that we lease to a fracking company that pays handsomely… its great farm land and pastured land for cattle as well… I wish we had more trees though… that’s the only thing we don't have… there a couple trees around the house and the ancient windmill… it was placed in 1887 and the original pad that the barn was built on was built in 1889… my great grandfathers tiny 3 year old hand prints are in that concrete next to his dad's… the wind mill supplied water to the cattle… to this day, you can still pump,water from the well there…. You have to hand crank it since the windmill itself no longer works… I want to have it restored… one day when I move back out there, that is the first thing I plan on doing…
@@JohnDoe-np3zk when I am able to get the wind mill restored, I will do something like that… for now, my dad won’t let me do anything with it… he has Alzheimer’s and he seems to think the windmill functions just fine… 😢😢😢
@@leonafaryna7617 yes it is… my brother's and I are very lucky to have this land and that my grandfather was smart enough to set it up the way he did… it's in some sort of Land Trust … I don't know all of the details of it… I just know it can never be taken away from us… of course, if we don't pay the property taxes on it, that’s a different story… but again, grandpa was smart… he set up an account with oil money and the property taxes are taken out of it every year kinda like you do an escrow account to pay your taxes and insurance on your home … I sure do miss that old man…. I learned a lot of things from him… he was a blacksmith and blade smith in addition to being a farmer… if he needed a tool and didn’t have it, he would go to the forge and make it instead of going to buy it… I still have some of the old ax heads, adze, knives and other things he made… I remember when I broke the chain my bicycle… he took me Into the machine shed where the coal forge was and he made a link for my bike's chain! Put the chain back together and put it back on my bike… it was good as new… heck, it was better than new.! I miss you grandpa… see you again someday!

I have some land with a mobile home, needs work but not a bunch. FEMA came in with the help of our crooked county made my never flood plain property into flood plain. Oh and by the way we need to enforce the Endangered Species Act too as part of the now flood plain. Well that changed my dreams and plans for that property. I may move there and have a few chickens of course no rooster we dont want any crowing. On the plus side its still a great property in terms of relative privacy cheap water cheap electric that just got rewired by power company, and relatively cheap property taxes. Not agricultural but could likely have a few cows or goats etc with no beef from neighbor who raises cows. The other thing is wow I have three properties over two states and just a lot of stuff. My dog seems to like the big house and chasing walkers along the road vs. 2 walkers a day at potential homestead...

@HiddenSpringFarm I'm good po
Gotta love the government overreaching only to make this worse. Hope things work out for you 😁
Fozzy!
