David Warner is a better class of villain

  • AmericanCaesar Presents: David Warner is a character actor with Shakespeare-training and a 50-year-career in the rearview mirror. He's played tons of striking villain roles, yet he claims that they were just paycheck gigs. How can that be? I looked through his films and interviews to find some clue of psychology to his acting technique.
AmericanCaesar Salad is a ten-episode series of video essays by Bill Scurry, podcaster, film critic, and curator of AmericanCaesar Enterprises.

This reminds of a quote from Christopher Lee: "Every actor is going to be in a bad film; the question is, whether you will be bad in it." I think David Warner and Christopher Lee both tried to give good performances, despite the material. I'm a huge fan of both of them.

I was just thinking he's up there in that echelon of great actors such as Christopher Lee, it is insane that Lee served in war and was a friend of Tolkien, the perfect actor to play Saruman in The Lord of the Rings.

What a wonderful tribute to a truly special actor ... I've alway said that if you are of a certain age and you obsessed over Sci-Fi and adventure movies, then it's impossible not to have discovered and fallen in love with Warner. I was born in 1975, and by the early 80s I had started to notice him in movies ... by the end of the 80s he was my absolute favourite actor.
I've never had the desire to go to conventions and meet famous people ... It just feels oddly weird to me. But when I heard that Warner was coming to my town to appear at a very small convention, I HAD to go ... He was as warm, friendly and charming as I had hoped he would be in my dreams ... They say never meet your heroes ... but thankfully my hero was David Warner. Just a normal bloke who happened to appear in magical movies.

A thousand thanks, Bill Scurry, for your tribute and deep, insightful analysis of the sublime David Warner's career. Knowing he suffers from psoriasis makes me admire him all the more and I've been a fan for 40 years. In 2001 I saw Mr. Warner's return to the stage in a Broadway production of George Bernard Shaw's "Major Barbara". He was so courageous to overcome his stage fright after over a 30 year absence from the theatre. His performance of Undershaft was graceful and masterful. He appeared completely at ease onstage with his fellow actors and the audience. It was also a special thrill to hear his beautiful voice live. I met him at the stage door. He was gracious, very friendly and extremely modest. He asked me if I thought the audience understood the sophistication of Shaw's humor? I said indeed we all did and reminded him there was a lot of laughter in his comic scenes. Mr. Warner is a very great, deeply sensitive actor with tremendous range and transparent technique. I wish more people knew about Mr. Warner and appreciated his unique gifts and artistry. Thank you again!

Even treatments will make me break out! That is how tender my skin! And makeup makes it worst, why at 33 still never wear it(rarely!) Maybe lipsgloss or tinted chapstick for winter months but that is it. Sometimes it's tamed than other days.
SO OMG! THIS MAKES ME LOVE HIM MORE!

Im glad to say ive seen all the films you featured. Gathered a few more of his lesser known films dvd recently. The Lost World, The Choir, Signs & Wonders. I think of him as the "british Lance Henriksen" to put it simply, its funny how many times he's played a priest btw.
