- AmericanCaesar Salad presents: A brief look at the ten-film oeuvre of a Dutch filmmaker more people should be aware of, Alex Van Warmerdam. I hope this overview inspires people to find his films and enjoy some fine moviemaking about which you might have not otherwise not known.
AmericanCaesar Salad is a series of video essays by Bill Scurry, podcaster, film critic, and curator of AmericanCaesar Enterprises.

Thanks Bill, Van Warmerdam is one of my most favorite film makers he has lived in IJmuiden, which is the next town from the city where i live. Dutch cinema is unknown in the world and this is a shame because some good stuff gets made here. But even within Holland it is hard to sell these movies to the cinema's. I am a fan of cinema and even for me I miss some Dutch movies coming out. I really have to read up on new releases to not miss them. Which is sad, but i am happy you are giving some credit to Dutch cinema and van Warmerdam. My favorite is of course "De Noorderlingen" I think this is still his most complete work.
Although he keeps surprising me, with Borgman (he never made a movie that dark and like a horror with some kind of supernatural twist??) but also number 10. I think this is the power of him, he is not a one trick pony and he doesnt do sequals. Every movie is unique just like him. A fine example for directors, that you can get somewhere in terms of career and fame if you stick to what you know and like.
He has always kept me guessing…
Thanks for making this, Bill. I've heard this director's name before, but now I know why he matters.
I think so, I'm glad you see my point! I would start with "Ober" which is out there.
Another excellent piece, Bill! Wonderfully edited and narrated, as well as informing me about a filmmaker I had very little knowledge of before watching this video. Thank you for making this!
Thanks, John! I'm happy to spread the word!
Thank you for this great summary of Alex's career. I know the early theatre and Abel but have a lot of catching up to do.
Thanks for watching! I recommend jumping in with whichever feature is the easiest to locate, they are all worth your time.
Excellent piece & great becomes it’s recognizing the talent that doesn’t get its due. Another one to put on my to do list because the movies sound fascinating
Thanks for giving a whirl, my friend, I always appreciate it.
@@amcaesar Are you kidding? I love these video essays & it’s some of the best stuff out there. Keep it up.
Great work as always, Bill!
Well I appreciate that sentiment!
I've been hooked on Warmerdam since watching 'De Noorderlingen' on a hotel TV in Munich in the early 2000's. I couldn't understand a word (no subtitles), but i was mesmerized!
I feel it -- he got me with "Ober" two years ago, and down the rabbit hole I went.
Thanks very much for that, I've been a cineaste for over 50 years now, it's always refreshing to discover a body of work that's unfamiliar to me.
I've watched a few Dutch films over the decades, but usually only those that get a UK distribution deal. I'll have a trawl around some streaming services and see if any of Alex Van Warmerdam's films are available to view, or inexpensive to buy on DVD.
The DVDs are inexpensive, even if the quality is SD. They are out there, however.
Quirky 👌
I love it!
@@amcaesarNice !!!
Hey, where can I find that interview you used? Amazing video btw :)
I haven't published it separately, on account of how large it is... maybe someday I'll get around to editing it into a 90-minute package.
