Having sold cars for a few years, one of the things I tell my friends and family is: When you go to a dealer to buy a car with a trade, give the salesman your EXTRA KEY. That way if you want to leave before you buy, you aren't stuck without your car or house keys. Dealers will "lose" your keys and keep you hostage until you buy. This happened to my sister, and she told the salesman, "That's fine, you have my address. Mail them to my house. Goodbye!" First time I ever saw a sales manager SPRINT after a customer.
It wouldnt Matter too much because then the dealership would be at a loss and not you. You would lose some leverage but other than that you wouldnt be "out" any money

Im probably a couple of days into this guys channel but boy ohhh boy do I enjoy this guy's amusing style of storytelling, specifically when he describes his visions of the events while he sits down with the customer at his desk.
Loving the Video, as always! Could you maybe do a Video about the general experience of being a car salesman? (Not necessarily on the VinWiki channel, maybe Ed's private channel?) You've had quite the selection of salesman on the channel. I've been thinking about going down that route for quite some time.
Too bad he's not there anymore. It would have been nice to pop in there in the morning for a Good espresso on the way to the next corp meeting in May. I seem to remember a couple of these guys were originally from Chicago, Far North Side if I remember correctly. Why the move to Atlanta other than the warmer climate?
Roger Rarebit everyone knows something/excels at something more than others. Some can make a great cup of coffee, some can build and tear down their own cars. It's beautiful to be alive!
Ed, I sold a car to a nice couple, signed and delivered them. Went through the car in great detail. Said goodbye and went to my office. 3 minutes later I heard a crunch. My boss had backed a suburban (their trade-in) into the car they just bought as it was parked behind it. When he did so he was in a hurry as we we closing soon and punched the gas. $7k in damage to the trade, and $15k in damage to the new car. Made for a late Saturday.
I had a janitor cleaning the bathrooms and a really fat lady threaten to take a dump on the floor, I also had a guy spill diet coke in the *women's* restroom and slip in it, then he threatened to sue us for it.....
The keys on the roof thing is real! A customer and salesperson got in to an argument, the salesman grabbed the keys and chucked them on to the roof of the dealership. The dealership was probably about three stories tall. Took about an hour to locate a really big ladder and have someone climb up there to get the keys.
Ed does such a good job at making this story sound like it was no sweat to him. I’m sure he must have been so damn nervous trying to convince the customer to trade.
Ed explaining the "old school tricks" is why I always take 2 keys with me.. I give them the spare that doesn't have any extra keys or anything on it.. and if they "lose" it, I can use my normal keys and leave.. not before getting it in writing that they will return my key or be paying for the replacement :)
Great story....should be a short film on Netflix....add a ghost from a previous accident causing the present accidents and I’ll give that a thumbs up as well ....👍
I have a similar story. I took my car in for service about 20 years ago. Long story short, they took it out to test the repair and never came back. They had to use the jaws of life to get the driver out. I saw the ambulance go down the street just like Ed mentioned and wondered where my car was. My car was totaled. Interesting talking to the insurance company. They wanted me to describe the accident - I told them I had no idea, I wasn’t there. The dealer loaned me a car to get home. I talked with them about buying a new car of course, but they knew I had to buy a car. I ended up going to a different dealer.
I really enjoy your channel. You are a masterful and eloquent story teller. Clearly someone I would enjoy drinking some beers with. Nothing like learning something AND drinking a beer with cool peoples
Hey Ed if you’re reading this I want to just let you know something. I have been subbed since 4K subs and have showed all the car enthusiasts I know your Channel and they also obsessed. But the point is that I do sales and watching you had most definitely made me better salesman. Just studying the way you speak and how you are very personable. I actually mimic your tone and it had been working amazing for me the past 6 months. I just want to thank you for the amazing story’s and being a very influential role model to me. God bless you and your family! And thank you for unintentionally making me richer!
As he's telling this story, I'm imagining scenes from movies where the customer has his back turned away from the action and the salesman is facing the action...traffic backing up, ambulance drives by. Customer is clueless.
Lol, so if you were not on time, the owner actually could sue the dealership and get more for the car than worth. But now like: "Oh great, sign here please. By the way, the manager crashed your car 15 mins. ago"
Was thinking the same thing. A real shady way to operate a dealership. I also like the fact that when he talked about "losing keys" to keep a guy on the show floor longer that they don't do that cause it's "not right". Talk about hypocritical.
Yeah, that's a shitty way to treat a long time customer. If it had happened to me, I would no longer do business with them since they are clearly morally compromised.

One of my card deals went horribly awry. I had a customer trading in a viper, GTR blue white stripes, beautiful car sales manager wasn’t available, but his stand in was. He was 3/4 crazy and 1/4 nuts. He thought he knew how to drive super cars cause he owned a Corvette so he took out the customers viper was thrashing to everliving snot out of it. We had two major roads intersect next to the dealership, so there was a flyover, and all you hear is the sound of the engines exhaust under heavy acceleration, followed by the soul crushing thump of plastic and car crushing followed by the unmistakable sound of sliding tires. We look up in all you see is a smoking viper sliding down the Jersey barrier and pieces flying everywhere. That’s when I knew the deal that I was about to make Wood put zero dollars in my pocket. But to my surprise, I looked at my commission sheet. The general manager put his trade in at full retail. I still made a decent commission. That’s advantage of working for a high-class dealership.
just curious Ed have you ever contemplated starting a podcast? I am completely enamored with our knowledge and stories. I hope to lead a life like yours. lol
Any day with an Ed story has to be a good day. Pretty sure if Larry Kosilla of Ammo NYC were to tell a story here it would be equally entertaining with his OCD about his regimental detailing of fine cars.
Well seems like having an adrenaline rush, tension in the room you can actually touch and a Oceans 11 kind of scenario is also obtainable in a dealership, if Mr. Ed Bolian is there.
You tend not to notice the gradual upscaling of quality overtime. However, I've just come from videos posted by Vinwiki in mid 2020 to this video now, and the audio quality is drastically superior in the mare recent videos. Good on Vinwiki for upgrading their recording equipment. I'm convinced that they could have left it alone, and I certainly would have been none the wiser.
I liked the part where you said you werent a shady dealer but then proceed to tell a story about lying to a customer about his car only until he said he’d buy the GTR from you. All on the up and up 😂
Experienced finance guys are usually "right on the money" with interest rates. Only in very odd situations do things not go as planned and they have to unwind or change a deal.
Until it all goes wrong. I’ve heard stories of people being “streeted,” only to have the deal later shot down by all of whichever bank(s) a dealer works with. It happens. Unscrupulously, it’s sometimes done intentionally! ‘Johnny Salesman’ then has to get the customer back in, and persuade them into new terms. Usually in the form of a *MUCH* bigger down payment, higher interest rate, monthly payment (and possibly even slip a few extra $$$ onto the sale price to boot). As I understand it - laws on this *DO* vary across US jurisdictions.... Though in many instances, should this happen, ‘Joe Customer’ can decline the new deal’s, less favorable terms - return the car and walk away. “Walking away” may not be so simple for single-car, and perhaps lower-income family customers though.... 1) They won’t be told this is an option, and maybe even lied to, if so inquiring. 2) They certainly *WON’T* be getting their trade car back - although they may be offered a buyback, for a tidy profit. Yeah.... 3) Any negative trade equity delta will need be satisfied, in cash. 4) Down payment might be held hostage, as additional financial leverage. Etcetera, etcetera; on-and-on.... Not to mention, walking off leaves a single-car customer in the position of summoning a ride home - and shopping for their next car, in a rental. Granted, I imagine a lot of the above tends not to happen with exotic car sales, and said customers. But the mechanics of car sales, regardless of make, is mostly the same in any given market. A VIN tagged and titled vehicle(s), exchanged for money.
I did say "experienced" finance guys. Not joe blow down the lot on the corner. Fly-by-night guys often pull what you stated above. They do it for various reasons, partly to get someone into a deal they know the person would not have agreed to up front (21% apr, etc). Those "very odd" situations apply as well, and more so when dealing with shady buyers or those with questionable backgrounds and credit risks. I was streeted before, based on a preliminary approval when I bought my first new car, because the bank had closed by the time we did the deal. I was making a $5000 down payment, but my daily credit limit on my bank account was $3000. So we had to wait until morning so I could get a cashier's check from the bank. They handed me the keys with instructions to come back the next day. I did, with check in hand, and there were zero problems.
Brett Bilger right? They did this to me when I bought my Subaru WRX. It was a Sunday so no banks. I get a call Monday to come in and sign papers I "forgot" turna out no bank wanted to Finance me at the rate they quoted me. They felt it was too high, too much of a. Risk. So they had to find a bank that would lower their interest rate.
Difficult to predict. If he had decided to back out of the deal, we would have had to get him made whole on his C63 and we probably would have been out looking for another GT-R a few weeks later. If he had wanted to keep the deal together, we were probably sufficiently motivated for the claim to be against a car that we owned that we would have probably given him a little more on the trade.
I sold exotic cars here in Austin for just over 10 years until 2013 and damn if I could I'd love to go back in time and spend a few days in sales at Motorcars of Georgia just to experience some of the incredible stories Ed graces our ears with!!!
Another great video, Ed. I love it. Did the guy ever find out that his AMG was totaled? Or did Lamborghini of Atlanta find a way to keep that hush hush and give him what he needed out of his car without his knowledge? I know the trunk wouldn't open but I'm curious to see his reaction if or when he found out it was hit. Good story, Ed. Love this channel.
Yes. Absolutely. We told him everything as he signed the paperwork and he was fine. He wasn't worried about the car, just wanted to make sure everyone involved was ok. We had a great relationship with this customer. The idea of the car being destroyed would have emotionally complicated the deal too much so it made sense to let him make the decision in that vacuum.
Ed Bolian emotionally complicated the deal? Made sense to let him make the decision in that vacuum? I think that's what you tell yourself. Cause emotionally complicated. Means if he would have known. He would have had ya by the balls on that trade value. Let him make the decision in that vacuum means. Let's let him decide without being aware of all the facts so we don't potentially loose a dollar. But hey man, whatever you gotta tell yourself so you can sleep at night.
Wrong. You sold it to him without first clarifying the situation b/c you knew he would have taken away even more of your profit. You flatly said so in the video. Man, I hope you're better than this.
Personally, I didn't like the pop-ups, I find it very distracting. Like with Impratical Jokers on TruTV, you find yourself reading them and can't pay attention to the show.
FastGunner 2040 I agree with you on it being a distraction. However I would rather pause the video every minute to read than to watch the whole video and be lost.
I feel that maybe it shouldn't be as frequent and should be off to the side and smaller. So it'll be less of a distraction, and quite honestly most people don't want to pause the video every minute. I understand about being lost, but it seemed that a lot of information didn't have to be put up in text and is already known.

Had he signed after he was aware, he could have easily gotten more for the trade in via threat of insurance claim.
@@Luckingsworth Exactly this was extremely shady and could have sued over the information of his car being wrecked being kept from him.
I enjoy watching this channel. Of all the channels I watch you are actually very intelligent and well spoken.
What an awesome story! You really remember the details and present them nicely! Well done.
So our storytelling hero is also an accomplished amateur barista?
P WrightisRight even more dreamy 😍
Too bad he's not there anymore. It would have been nice to pop in there in the morning for a Good espresso on the way to the next corp meeting in May. I seem to remember a couple of these guys were originally from Chicago, Far North Side if I remember correctly. Why the move to Atlanta other than the warmer climate?
DjJtown exotic cars don't work great in cold weather
Last time I was this early, the 911 was still parked at the country club.
I swear if i see you here one more time
Keep em coming.
Anything is better than her being late... ;)
I was definitely on the edge of my seat for this one!
Carter Harris you need to sit back further so you don't fall
Ed, remind me some day to tell you the "guy who took a dump on my floor" story. It was, interesting.
“I’m gonna take a dump in every last car on your lot! I’m gonna pee on your counters....I’m gonna do it all!!!!”
~Crank Yankers
Someone shit on my floor at work after locked them out so they couldn't steal anymore.
I had a janitor cleaning the bathrooms and a really fat lady threaten to take a dump on the floor, I also had a guy spill diet coke in the *women's* restroom and slip in it, then he threatened to sue us for it.....
Lmao, came out today.
The keys on the roof thing is real! A customer and salesperson got in to an argument, the salesman grabbed the keys and chucked them on to the roof of the dealership. The dealership was probably about three stories tall. Took about an hour to locate a really big ladder and have someone climb up there to get the keys.
My reaction if it was my car would have been “OK, now I’m gonna stand here and beat your ass until those keys are back in my hand.”
Even better than i expected😂 you held your word
I love how he quickly explained financing a vehicle. Makes me upset when people say they will buy it all in cash.
Ed needs to start doing audiobooks! :)
A VINwiki video that includes Ed, a great story, and a mentioning of Bitcoin. My life is complete.
This guys voice is.........
How was this not one of the first stories you gave us? Keep them coming!
Getting my daily VINwiki before classes. Thanks for another upload guys!
Great story .. after being a regular visitor for a while, I subscribed today. Nicely done.
Wow look at that white Ferrari 550!? Talk about a unicorn. Great video per usual!
I have tried to buy it many times.
But was he a shrewd negotiator?
Ed does such a good job at making this story sound like it was no sweat to him. I’m sure he must have been so damn nervous trying to convince the customer to trade.
Man, it seems Austin and Ed have the craziest GT-R sales stories I've heard! Great storytelling, as always.
Ed explaining the "old school tricks" is why I always take 2 keys with me.. I give them the spare that doesn't have any extra keys or anything on it.. and if they "lose" it, I can use my normal keys and leave.. not before getting it in writing that they will return my key or be paying for the replacement :)
Great story....should be a short film on Netflix....add a ghost from a previous accident causing the present accidents and I’ll give that a thumbs up as well ....👍
literally wait for a Ed story all week
Sleazy, pure and simple.
So you guys hustled him more because your company messed up. Awesome. Cliche carsalesmen.
Man u pass on good info, while telling your passed experiences. Good stuff...
If it had happened to me, I would no longer do business with them since they are clearly morally compromised.
bullshit.it was an accident.they have insurance.what was he going to sue him for? he has 72 hours to change his mind and cancel the deal.
@Herando Sanqui if you wreck my car and give me the money you make, sure I am happy to cooperate with you. I don't know how you will get a profit but thats not my problem.
@@johndillinger8482 Uhm, if he is homosexual - you have a problem with that? ... sounds like you have a problem with homosexuality, doesn't matter if its 3 months old either. Still seems like you have a problem with someone being homosexual.
Also, Ed did tell the customer what had happened, the customer was okay with it and drove off happily in his brand new GT-R
I'm glad I found this channel, I like listening to these stories. Especially the ones by the shrewd negotiator.
You should make some of those shirts and hoodies with 'Shrewd Negotiator' on them.
We will add them to the teespring products but for now you can go to: bonfire.com/vinwiki-shrewd-negotiator
When I saw the title I was thinking “ok its gonna be like a fender bender” then ed says “he t boned a bmw” and I was like oh no
Great speaker, great story. Excellent video!
I love this channel! Ed Bolian is such a gifted story teller! I could listen to this guy talk all day!
I wish all car salesman are as honest and likeable as him
This is the dude you want telling stories when cracking a cold one with the boys
Schools’ closed and a new VINwiki video is out, pure bliss.
that dealership insurance high key dropped them after those accidents 🤣
Well seems like having an adrenaline rush, tension in the room you can actually touch and a Oceans 11 kind of scenario is also obtainable in a dealership, if Mr. Ed Bolian is there.
This is my lunch break entertainment as long as they keep these going. Need more valet stories!
Within the first 10 seconds I was like “YES!!! Another ED video!!!!” Love the stories man. Not only great stories but from a fantastic story teller.
This guy needs his own podcast. You're an expert in a niche and def have the voice for it
What a great story, I can't imagine the pressure that you felt to close the deal off before the customer notice that his AMG was totaled
That’s hilarious! Ed, let’s hear some more stories like this one!!
Ed has one of those voices you could listen to all day.
I liked the part where you said you werent a shady dealer but then proceed to tell a story about lying to a customer about his car only until he said he’d buy the GTR from you. All on the up and up 😂
I love this idea of "streeting" the customer. We just made the interest rate up.
U guys got the craziest stories! Sounds like a lot of fun! My new fav chan
everytime I see the new video I hope its ed bolian
I just hope that this guy does not run out of these cool stories...
Mr. Ed can you do a walk around of the ware house and the mercielago
Total surprise finding episodes, not yet seen, from many years past!
How much different this would have gone if the guy had found out about it or decided he didn't want the GTR...
SuperiorRedneck Then the dealership scene from "national lampoon vacation" comes true
Not surprised about all of the wrecks there. That stretch of Roswell Road is terrible!
It's nice to hear about how car salesmen have screwed over customers in the past.
I sold exotic cars here in Austin for just over 10 years until 2013 and damn if I could I'd love to go back in time and spend a few days in sales at Motorcars of Georgia just to experience some of the incredible stories Ed graces our ears with!!!
Another great video Ed!
Love this channel.
so did he ever find out you crashed his car?
Yes.

At the end of the day it’s a business and you do what is in the best interest of the business.
Chris Johnson Pretty sure what he did is illegal though.
Wrong. You sold it to him without first clarifying the situation b/c you knew he would have taken away even more of your profit. You flatly said so in the video.
Man, I hope you're better than this.
I really like Ed stories thank you man 👍🏼
Really good story! Would love for the editor to conti he adding in the extra information about the car language like done in previous videos!
Personally, I didn't like the pop-ups, I find it very distracting. Like with Impratical Jokers on TruTV, you find yourself reading them and can't pay attention to the show.
I agree with FastGunner
FastGunner 2040 I agree with you on it being a distraction. However I would rather pause the video every minute to read than to watch the whole video and be lost.
I feel that maybe it shouldn't be as frequent and should be off to the side and smaller. So it'll be less of a distraction, and quite honestly most people don't want to pause the video every minute. I understand about being lost, but it seemed that a lot of information didn't have to be put up in text and is already known.
Talk about a "Hard Close" lol.
Good job on getting the deal inked.
Great Video! I Love All The Stories They Are Always Funny
RaggedyRacing Garage uh the video just came out tho
I’ve already watched 5 mins of it
wish i was apart of that circle of spectator watching that deal going down. must've been like a movie scene honestly.
Another day, another Ed story
life cant get better than this
I have no idea why but I am hooked on this channel
Another Ed story ! this is gonna be good
Adam Stefano I think the same way 😂
You talk way too much without saying much..
Robert John what lmao
And this is why I don't like shady sales people....
Seemed like a semi honest guy right up untill the 7 mins mark
Take this story as a warning that sales people will use your own ignorance and misinformation against you for their own benefit! All with a charismatic grin
